About the role

In this rewarding role right at the heart of our Macmillan Support line, you will work in a busy and varied environment, while providing emotional support and key information to people living with cancer and their loved ones at a time of great need.

Due to the nature of some of the calls and webchats, the role can be challenging at times, so resilience is key. However its extremely fulfilling, to be able to support people who are going through such difficult times.

You will work towards performance goals to help us ensure we are reaching everyone who needs our support, with the level of support being the highest quality.

Shift patterns

Our Support Line is available 365 days a year, including bank holidays from 8am to 8pm and is key to our strategic objective of reaching everyone whilst focusing on those who need the most support.

To cover our service and opening hours  you will be required to work a shift pattern on a 6 week rotation of:

Week 1 & 2 - Monday to Friday 9:00-17:00

Week 3 & 4 - Monday to Friday 10:00-18:00

Week 5 - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday 12:15-20:15

Week 6 - Monday 10:15-20:15, Wednesday to Friday 10:45-20:15

*with a 30 minute earlier finish or later start one day of weeks 1-5

About you
The successful candidate will demonstrate the following skills and experience:

• Experience of working in a busy customer facing environment (preferably contact centre environment), dealing with multiple customer queries and remaining calm under pressure. 
• Experience of speaking confidently to customers via multiple channels; phone, webchat and email.
• Experience of using a Customer Relationship Management system to record accurately the organisation’s interactions with customers.
• High levels of resilience and experience of dealing with emotional or impactful content.
• Experience of working towards goals/KPIs (for example call performance such as average handling times and wrap times).

The first stage will consist of a role play telephone call and written response task in relation to a person affected by cancer, which will be an opportunity to demonstrate your customer service and support skills.

About the campaign

Our Campaign for Disability Justice, launched in September last year, is a vital initiative to tackle the systemic issues trapping over two million Disabled people in deep poverty. We address the root causes: inefficient social security regardless of employment status, barriers to employment for those capable of work, and a negative public discourse perpetuated by Government. The Campaign calls on Government to collaborate with Disabled People's Organisations to achieve these crucial changes.

Shine’s Health Team 

Shine’s Health Team provides condition-specific health advice and support to people of all ages with spina bifida, hydrocephalus, NPH or IIH, promoting good self-management and enabling our members to live in optimum health.  The Team also aims to reduce the numbers of pregnancies affected by spina bifida and anencephaly through education around supplementation and fortification with folic acid, and other measures. 

Purpose of Job 

The Shine Nurse Specialist will deliver services and create resources to improve the health of Shine’s members, by informing members, their carers and professionals 

Principal Duties 

• To provide ad hoc advice to Shine’s members, their carers  and professionals on complex health issues, and signpost to NHS services 

• To attend and represent Shine at the Chelsea & Westminster Spina Bifida Clinic (for permanent role)

• To collect information, statistics and research from a variety of sources to inform Shine’s health projects 

• To create resources to inform and support members’ health 

• To develop training/information resources for professionals 

• To plan and deliver projects, events, presentations and information sessions for members and professionals 

• To provide an information resource for Shine staff

About the role:

This is a central and valued role in our Senior Leadership Team. The position is critical to our work in training healthcare professionals to understand how the law applies to practice and our work to empower communities with the tools and language to advocate for their rights. You will be delivering our ambitious plans to take our training service to the next level at this critical time, with support of our two brilliant training co-ordinators and a wider network of associate trainers. You will balance overseeing some exciting new projects with ensuring quality delivery of our training to meet our income targets.

Home-based (UK based and able to travel to deliver training across England and Wales, and to attend some in-person meetings and events predominantly in London and Birmingham).

About You:

We are looking for someone who has the ability to manage an income-generating service, meet the strategic goals of the service, and identify advocacy opportunities towards our ambition for long term and systemic change.

You will be a collaborative and empathetic leader, with experience managing an operational service or team and generating income or managing budgets. You will have experience developing or delivering training and have some understanding of human rights law or the challenges faced by too many women and birthing people in maternity care in the UK.
