About us
Who we are
Inclusion Barnet is a thriving peer-led charity based in North West London. We believe in the power of experience and this is demonstrated by all our services being led, developed and delivered by people with lived experience of disability, including mental health issues and long-term conditions. We believe that learning to use our lived experience for social change is a skill. We have become experts in harnessing the lived experience of our staff, members, volunteers and people who use our services to design and deliver higher quality, more person-centred services. We believe that this benefits both disabled people and society more widely. We also work to support other organisations to do the same. Our work is very much influenced by the Social Model of Disability, the Survivors Movement, Trauma-Informed approaches and Independent Living principles.
Our culture and values
We are a Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisation (DDPO), and our board and staff reflect the community we exist to represent. Eight of our nine trustees declare an impairment, and represent a broad range of disabled people’s experience with every major impairment group represented. Our ninth trustee is a family carer. Similarly, disabled people are strongly represented in the staff team at all levels of the organisation, including the senior team; at the time of writing, 83% of our staff team have lived experience of disability, and the vast majority of the roles we advertise specify lived experience of disability as essential.
Vision:
We believe in a world where disabled people live their lives free of barriers and stigma.
Mission:
Our mission is to harness the strength and skills gained from our lived experience of disability to create more inclusive services and communities.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
At Inclusion Barnet our values on equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) run through everything we do. From our recruitment procedures to our day-to-day interactions, EDI is at the heart of our vision.
There are many factors which influence whether people experience fair treatment or not. Although we are an organisation focused on supporting D/deaf and Disabled people, there is often an intersection between disability and other marginalities, such as poverty or being part of the Global Majority.
This is why we strive for a society where Disabled people live free from barriers, stigma and poverty. To make this happen, it is essential to look beyond the barriers relating to disability alone.
We remain open to learning and change. So, our EDI policy is not a rigid statement but a constant work-in-progress. As we continue to identify and tackle the barriers faced by our customers and partners, we also strive to address EDI issues that arise within our own work.
