Job Title: Head of Grants
Reports to: CEO
Salary: £45,000 - £47,000 pa (dependent on experience)
Location. Remote, home-based work and occasional attendance in Edinburgh office.
Contract. This will be a full-time, 35-hours post, but we may consider part-time arrangements to start with. Some flexibility will be required to attend events and meetings away from Edinburgh.
Responsibilities. Head of Grants will have the following responsibilities:
- Provide the lead for the Grants’ Department in the VF, managing relevant staff to best effect and shaping the Grant-Making Policy to suit the VF’s objects.
- Provide high quality policy, communications and strategic advice to the CEO and Trustees.
- Liaise with other organisations (eg Cobseo, AFCFT, OVA, other charities) to formulate policy and to enable smooth and effective operation of the VF’s Grant-Making Policy.
- Deliver the Grant-Making Policy approved by the Trustees.
- Suggest changes to the Grant-Making Policy to the Trustees when necessary, having identified impact and backed by research where possible.
- Ensure the quarterly and annual grant-making schedules are maintained, including arranging meetings and providing briefing packs for Trustees.
- Manage workloads to match staff employment contracts.
- Provide effective grant-making processes and identify improvements when necessary.
- Oversee the grant management aspects of Salesforce.
- Provide good coordination between the Grants Department and other departments in VF and with contractors.
- Promote the VF culture: cheerful, efficient and engaging effectiveness.
- Lead and manage the grants’ communications strategy.
- Overseeing the measurement of the impact of VF grants.
- Other duties and responsibilities as appropriate to the post and requested by the CEO.
Experience and Qualifications. Candidates should possess the following experiences, qualifications and skills:
Experience
- Proven experience and success in a relevant Third Sector grants’ management role.
- Good understanding and knowledge of the Armed Forces’ elements in the Third Sector.
- Experience of conducting due diligence into grantees.
- Understanding of business functions such as HR, finance and information security.
- Demonstrable competency in planning.
- Working knowledge of IT and comms systems, including Salesforces and MS 365.
- Excellent organisational and leadership abilities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Aptitude in decision-making and problem-solving.

About Us
The Veterans’ Foundation (VF) is an independent grant-making charitable foundation. It has established a substantial grants’ programme to support charities and organisations in the UK that provide charitable support to those in need among serving armed forces personnel, veterans, operationally qualified seafarers and their immediate families. The charity has grown rapidly since inception in July 2016 and has to date (Oct 24) given away more than £25M to good causes and handed out around £1.6M to good causes each quarter for the past year.
The VF supports a broad range of charities and organisations that deliver a wide variety of projects to members of the armed forces’ community including those that reduce homelessness, increase employment, provide welfare and medical support, increase confidence and social integration, as well as reducing dependence on alcohol and drugs. The VF gives priority to charities and organisations who can demonstrate that they are directly involved in the provision of support to those in need, and that are well-run organisations of low to medium wealth while also recognising innovation.
Since inception, income has come mainly from the Veterans’ Lottery, however, individual and corporate donations have grown significantly, and we now have staff focusing on this too.
The VF’s office is based in New Town in Edinburgh’s city centre. The VF’s staff consists of 13 employees: Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, 2 x staff in Finance, 3 x staff in Grants and 5 x staff in Fundraising. We now seek someone to fill a new post as Head of Grants.

As a newly created position, the Fundraising Manager will report to the Head of Grants & Development and oversee a Fundraising Coordinator and Senior Database Officer. The role will be instrumental in implementing the organisation’s strategic plan to expand reach and impact and increase income by $10M over 3 years.
As Fundraising Manager, your initial focus will be developing existing and new relationships with institutional funders, working closely with the Head of Grants & Development. Developing relationships with foundations will be another priority area, with potential to leverage existing relationships that have arisen from tech-level engagement with foundations. In the longer term, plans include pursuing corporate sponsorships and developing income from individual donors (HNWIs).
As Fundraising Manager, you will:
- Implement the fundraising strategy in collaboration with the Head of Grants & Development and the Executive team
- Identify, build, and manage relationships with current and prospective donors across public sector funders, foundations, international organisations, corporate sponsors and individual donors
- Support the development of new projects/proposals in partnership with the Global Programs team, consulting with the Chiefs and Department Heads to ensure proposals align with their capacities
- Collaborate with the public sector licensing team to grow reach to public sector clients (corporates)
- Line manage and support a Fundraising Coordinator and Senior Database Officer
Ideal skills and experience:
- An entrepreneurial and resourceful fundraiser with experience of developing proposals and budgets and securing significant grants from institutional and international foundation sources
- Working with individual donors (HNWIs) and/or corporate sponsors would be advantageous, but not essential
- Evidence of excellent relationship management skills, with both current and prospective donors
- Ability to handle the complexity of managing multiple fundraising efforts globally
- Line management experience
Benefits include:
- 28 days annual leave including bank holidays, with a c.2-week office closure at the end of the year for the winter hiatus. Typically, this would be 2 weeks with varying start and end dates of the office closure. For example, this year the closure dates start on the evening of Friday 20th Dec with a return to work on Monday 6th January, providing 7 days when employees are offline in addition to bank holidays.

Managing Travalyst’s corporate and individual donor base and driving revenue growth through targeted fundraising efforts.
What you’ll get to do:
This role combines soliciting new prospect donors, donor management, partnership development, and data-driven campaign execution. The ideal candidate will be skilled in relationship building, fundraising strategy, and donor engagement, with a demonstrable passion for Travalyst’s mission of promoting sustainable travel and tourism.
Donor Management (~40%)
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with a portfolio of individual donors, corporate and institutional foundations to secure philanthropic and private funding and advance Travalyst’s mission.
- Identify, solicit, and nurture new donor prospects, ensuring continuous growth of the donor base.
- Strategise with senior leadership to retain and upgrade current donors, including personalised engagement for high-value supporters.
- Support high-value donor and corporate partner meetings, preparing personalised correspondence, proposals and briefs.
Fundraising Strategy, Campaigns, and Event Management (~30%)
- Collaborate with the Partnerships and Development team to plan, execute, and manage proposal development and annual appeal processes for fundraising campaigns, including donor and partner events, direct mail, and corporate initiatives.
- Conduct prospect research for individual donors, foundations, and international government funding sources.
- Oversee the project management and execution of partnership and donor events, ensuring seamless planning, logistics coordination, and delivery to meet revenue and engagement goals.
- Track and report progress on fundraising campaigns and events, providing analysis on key performance indicators and revenue projections.
- Work with the communications team to create compelling materials for donor outreach, event promotion, presentations, and corporate engagement.
- Secure grant funding through research, proposal development, and managing the grant application process.
Donation Administration and CRM Management (~20%)
- Manage the CRM system, ensuring donor and partner data is accurate, up-to-date, and effectively utilised for engagement and reporting.
- Partner with the Operations team to ensure all donations, invoices and tracking is completed in a timely manner with follow up to donors as required.
- Oversee donor reporting, generating data insights and analytics to inform future strategies and donor retention efforts.
- Manage reconciliation processes and ensure development data and financial data are in alignment.
- Collaborate with the team on CRM system training and improvements and support data migration if necessary.
General Administration and Team Support (~10%)
- Provide administrative support to the Partnerships and Development team, including scheduling meetings, managing calendars, and preparing materials for donor presentations.
- Assist with special projects and additional fundraising and partnership tasks as needed.

· Experience with grant management, writing and corporate engagement strategies.
· Experience with financial reporting and analysis in Excel/Google Suite.
· Strong understanding of sustainability issues, trends and the philanthropy sector, with a track record of aligning donor objectives with environmental and social responsibility.
· Experience working internationally and collaborating with people in diverse cultural and political contexts preferred.
· Ability to work independently and remotely in a dynamic and fast paced team environment.

In this senior role, you’ll oversee our Partnerships and Philanthropy team during this period of transformational growth, leading efforts to secure major donations, develop corporate relationships, and design unforgettable, high-profile events. Working closely with our Appeal Director, you’ll help drive the “It’s Not Just a Hospice” appeal and lead efforts to secure £16.3 million to transform one of our two children’s hospices, Rachel House. With creativity, determination, and compassion, you’ll play a critical role in CHAS’s mission to provide unwavering care to children who may die young and their families.
Your Role at CHAS
As part of our award-winning Income Generation and Engagement Directorate, you’ll report to the Director of Income Generation and Engagement and lead a department of 13 talented professionals, including two senior managers. This role is central to CHAS’s strategic vision, which includes a fundraising goal of £75 million (including £16.3 million from the major appeal) over the next five years to sustain CHAS’s life-changing work and fund key projects like the Rachel House redevelopment.

This is an exciting opportunity to join North Uist Development Company (NUDC) and UistWind (North Uist Development Company Trading Limited) to act as a catalyst for innovative and sustainable community development and for successful operational management of the North Uist community-owned wind farm – UistWind.
UistWind has been operational since 2019 and we are pleased to have reached a point in the project to be able to fund this joint position in preparation for the first North Uist Community Benefit Fund.
The successful candidate will work with the UistWind Management Committee, its members and associated parties, to manage the Community Benefit Society’s operational business needs, meeting compliance requirements while working to maximise generation and revenue from two 900kW wind turbines at Criongrabhal near Clachan-na-Luib in North Uist for the benefit of the local community.The successful candidate will also work with NUDC and the wider community, to develop and implement both a community development plan, and a community investment plan for the UistWind community benefit fund, which takes account of opportunities to enhance the socio-economic, cultural and environmental welfare of the North Uist and Berneray area.
