About Spurgeons
Spurgeons Children’s Charity (Spurgeons) is one of the UK’s leading children’s charities, supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged children and their families for 150 years.
Inspired by our Christian faith, our mission is to improve the lives of families and children who are struggling to cope and to give every child the opportunity of a hope-filled life.
Through the delivery of support and intervention services, and by speaking up on behalf of those who need us most, we give vulnerable children and families the chance for a better future. Over the last year, we made a real difference to the lives of almost 3,000 children, young people and adults, and protected 1200 from neglect, harm and abuse.
Every child deserves hope
Over 3.9 million children are living in poverty in the UK today, with around 400,000 classed by the child protection service as being in need. At Spurgeons, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to live a hope-filled life; and that no child should face abuse, neglect or uncertainty.
Through our support and intervention services and by speaking up on behalf of those who need us most, we help to address this by giving vulnerable and disadvantaged children and their families the chance they need for a better present and a more hope-filled future.
Our services ensure these vulnerable children and families can access the help they need. We help them cope better with their difficulties and provide them with resources and support to find long lasting solutions to challenging problems.
Trusted for 150 years by children and families
Charles Spurgeon founded an orphanage in 1867 to provide vulnerable children with shelter, education and the hope of a better future. 150 years later, this legacy lives on, and the need for our services is as great today as it was then.
For over 150 years, families, supporters and statutory bodies, have trusted us to be consistently led by the values that are rooted in the Christian faith. In times of increased need for our services, and with pressures on other agencies, we will continue to be faithful to our ethos and values.
Partnership approach
Through working within communities, we adopt a partnership approach to finding long lasting solutions for individual needs. Our extensive volunteer network, along with local fundraising and partnership working, ensures front line staff are equipped to provide the best possible support.
Our Values
As a Christian charity, our core values are important to us and we reflect them in everything we do.
Our culture and values
Our three values are the essence of who we are and how we work.
Fair, Committed and Compassionate
We want them to be how children, young people and families describe us; and for our partners, commissioners and funders to say that's why they work with us.
Our six behaviours
- Put children and young people first in everything
- Respect and value every individual
- Listen to understand, without judging
- Be open and honest, with kindness
- Persevere to be our absolute best and do what we say we will do
- Bring out the best in each other as we work together for the right result
They build on the best of what's already happening in our organisation to create a distinctive culture colleagues want to be part of. They also challenge us to hold each other to account, to better serve children and families.
