The Organisation:
Sir Henry Irving founded the Fund in 1882 with a number of other actors and stage managers. Over 140 years, Presidents have included Sir John Gielgud, Sir Lawrence Olivier and Dame Penelope Keith. We are thrilled that our Royal Patron has recently been confirmed as King Charles III.
The ABF is a membership charity with over 600 members who are from the acting or stage management fraternity. Members select up to 12 trustees from within the membership to govern and take responsibility for the ABF’s management and administration. Those trustees can appoint up to four additional non-member trustees on the basis of skills and experience they can bring to the charity.
The Board of Trustees delegates authority to a number of sub committees, including Grants & Services, Finance & Operations, and Marketing & Engagement. We ask trustees to join one of these committees.
For over 140 years, the Actors' Benevolent Fund has supported actors and stage managers experiencing hardship due to injury, illness or old age. To date this support has consisted of financial grants and benefits advice, as well as a listening ear. This support is delivered by a small staff team at Adam Street just off The Strand in London.
The charity world has changed significantly in recent years. Society rightly expects charities to deliver their purposes effectively for public benefit. The ABF has been going through a process of reform to maximise the help it delivers and to ensure it is the most effective and impactful steward of its resources.
The charity’s first ever CEO was appointed last summer, and a new Board of Trustees was elected and appointed early 2024 to take the charity forward into the future with a bold new ambition to increase impact.
To find out more about the Actors’ Benevolent Fund, visit the website.

There is a growing need to respond to the changes within our society and profession, and we are seeking individuals with the passion to join an inspirational team to make meaningful and sustainable change to our community.
We are currently looking for two non-member trustees, each with knowledge and experience in one of the following two areas:
• Investment management
• Strategic marketing and / or brand awareness

- Strategic marketing / brand awareness

• Demonstrate tact and diplomacy, with the ability to listen and engage effectively
• The time to commit to the role: Board meetings are held from 10.30 – 13.00 on the last Thursday every other month (January, March, May, July, September, November), and sub committees meet three times per year
Desirable:
• Experience of charity governance and being part of a Board
• Experience of acting or stage management
Please download the Candidate Information Pack for further details.
How to Apply:
To apply, please provide us with:
• An up-to-date CV; and

All applications should be sent to the Trustees Unlimited email address, published on their website.
If you have any difficulty uploading your application or if you would like to have an informal and confidential discussion about the role, alternatively please contact Melissa Baxter or Ian Joseph.

The Trust is now seeking an excellent candidate to join the Board of Trustees as Chair to support Strawberry Hill House & Garden in achieving this objective. As Chair, you will help the charity meet its growth ambitions and deliver the vision and leadership needed.
The Organisation
This is an exciting time to be part of Strawberry Hill House’s future.
After the challenges of 2020-2023, during which the heritage environment has significantly changed, Strawberry Hill House is now setting a new course, under a new Executive Director, with an emphasis on developing a sustainable business model which combines the original mandate, to make Horace Walpole’s legacy available to all, with the need to develop a commercial programme of enhanced fundraising and donor support, events and community engagement, while minimising costs.
Built as Horace Walpole’s summer residence in the eighteenth century, Strawberry Hill House is a beautiful example of Gothic Revival architecture with a wonderful story to tell through its inhabitants, design, collection and restoration. The Strawberry Hill Trust (“the charity”), formed as an independent charity in 2002 by local supporters and volunteers, now has a 125-year lease from the freeholder St Mary’s University (SMU). It was entrusted with the aim of restoring, maintaining and making accessible to the public Walpole’s home as a hub for keeping his name, spirit and contribution alive.
Since 2007 The Strawberry Hill Trust has undertaken a major £10 million restoration of Horace Walpole’s iconic gothic villa and gardens in Twickenham. The first stage was completed in 2010, with significant support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (now the NLHF), when the house and garden were opened to the public.
The Role
The Chair leads and guides the Board of Trustees and the Executive Director runs the House. Together, they develop and execute the strategic direction of The Strawberry Hill Trust, ensuring that Strawberry Hill House & Garden builds the strongest local, national and international reputation as a well-run and interesting museum. Of paramount importance in achieving this vision is a robust financial strategy and the strongest commitment to playing a leading role in the local community. The Trust relies on the Chair to ensure that key decisions are made, recorded and actioned.
Person specification
• Ensuring that The Strawberry Hill Trust fulfils its legal responsibilities as laid out in its Articles of Association, as a company limited by guarantee and as a charity registered in England and Wales;
• Ensuring that The Strawberry Hill Trust pursues its objects as laid down in the Articles of Association and that its assets are used exclusively in pursuit of these objectives;
• Approving the annual returns submitted to the Charity Commission and Company’s House

• Monitoring the performance of The Strawberry Hill Trust against agreed key objectives;
• Ensuring that The Strawberry Hill Trust remains financially viable and that the financial and reputational risks to which it is exposed are appropriately monitored and mitigated;
• Ensuring that the Risk Register is actively managed and regularly reviewed;
• Agreeing the annual operating budget and monitoring financial performance in-year;

Our rivers are facing a crisis, besieged by development, urban and agricultural runoff, the discharge of raw sewage and the relentless exploitation of water resources. As climate change exacerbates droughts and floods, the very essence of our rivers, and the life they sustain, hangs in the balance.
At the South East Rivers Trust (SERT) we are working hard to respond urgently to this crisis. We believe that when rivers thrive so do people and nature. Our vision is that rivers in the south east are clean, healthy and rich in biodiversity. Our mission is to protect and restore rivers and catchments and provide increased resilience to a dramatically changing climate and the many pressures our precious rivers face. Our ambition is to grow our organisational capacity to be even more effective in each of the 12 river catchments in our footprint.
The Board of Trustees is SERT’s governing body, responsible for setting SERT’s strategic direction and providing oversight. We have a strong and committed group of Trustees who bring a wealth of experience and expertise.
Following a review, we are seeking three new Trustees to join the Board who will bring expertise in one of the following areas:
- Farming, Agriculture, Landownership
- Design and delivery of large technical or engineering-based projects
- Environment Agency/water company/relevant government background
- Community engagement
SERT seeks to be as representative as possible of the communities we serve and we particularly welcome interest from candidates from groups currently under-represented on the Board of Trustees.
Please see the attached SERT Trustee recruitment pack 2024 which contains information about SERT and the role of our Trustees. We look forward to hearing about how you could help us achieve our vision.
Recruitment Process
To apply, please send your CV and covering letter (max two sides of A4) setting out how you meet the above criteria and what you would bring to the role. The deadline is 14th July 2024.
Please also complete and return the SERT Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form_Trustees (optional).
Candidates will be shortlisted against the person specification and judged solely on merit. It is anticipated that interviews will be held in September.
