This role offers an exciting opportunity to join Public Law Project’s (PLP) Board in a key governance and leadership role, providing expertise and insight on financial matters. The role of “Finance Trustee” is an informal title designed to attract the interest of and be accessible to people with a high level of finance skills who might not necessarily have previous experience of the charity sector or at Board level. As a PLP trustee you will be part of the governance of the charity that successfully challenged the prorogation of Parliament, helped survivors whose assets are controlled by their abuser to access legal aid, and are currently representing the lead case opposing the Government’s Rwanda deportation scheme. You will ensure we are able to continue this important work by ensuring the best management of the resources at our disposal. You will play a crucial role in ensuring PLP operates within a framework of good governance and financial stability. The PLP Trustee Board consists of the Chair and up to 12 total members. As a Board member, you and our other trustees take on responsibility for overall governance of our organisation, including the financial health and oversight of our strategic direction. The Board delegates core governance functions to sub-committees including the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee (FARCOM), Fundraising Committee and the Personnel Committee. The purpose of FARCOM is to provide scrutiny and oversight of policies, processes and practice relating to finance and risk. The Chair of FARCOM leads the committee and ensures it fulfils this overall purpose. The duties of a traditional treasurer are held by the Chair of FARCOM. We envisage you joining as one of four trustee members of FARCOM. You will provide recent, relevant financial expertise to FARCOM and its Chair in order that the responsibilities of the committee and of the treasurer role are fulfilled. We anticipate that your role will in turn benefit from the guidance and support of the Chair of FARCOM. To be the successful candidate, you will have financial management experience (highly likely but not required to be a qualified accountant). You will bring financial expertise and experience to PLP’s activities. You will be able to confidently communicate financial issues to non-finance experts including other board and committee members You will be an independent, strategic and creative thinker with a strong commitment to collaborative working and PLP’s values. This role is voluntary and unpaid, and reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. PLP is an equal opportunities and Disability Confident Committed employer, and we place a high value on diversity. We are proud of our strong diversity right across the organisation and at all levels of seniority. We have significant numbers of staff and trustees who come from underprivileged or minoritised backgrounds (including people of colour, women, LGBTQ+ people, disabled people, and people from lower socio-economic backgrounds). Whether you are part of all or none of these groups, you will be welcomed at PLP. We are keen for our Board to be reflective of our beneficiary groups, which include those with lived experience as users of asylum, welfare, and legal aid systems, and experience of migration and discrimination; we particularly invite your application if this is your experience.

Unfold does governance differently. An award winning charity, we are led by the people we serve, with inclusive, participatory governance structures which have twice been short-listed for excellence in the Charity Governance Awards.
Unfold (previously known as Westminster Befriend a Family) is an established local charity that gets people where they want to be. Powered by volunteers, we support children, young people and families with one to one mentoring and peer support groups across Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea. We're open to everyone, but we target those who face the most challenges: 93% of our service users are people of colour, 75% are single parent families headed by a woman and in 50% of the families we support there is a child with disabilities or special education needs.
We support the local community and we have also developed specialised programmes for people with specific needs, including refugees, children excluded from mainstream school and children with experience of the care system.
Unfold Trustees
We have a dynamic, committed, open and friendly board, and we're seeking two new trustees to join us, bringing skills and experiences from the not-for-profit or public sectors.
To reflect the experiences of our service users, we're aiming to maintain the diversity of our board - we're particularly keen to hear from people from the global majority, women, and people who identify with other under-represented groups, including those with disabilities or who identify at LGBTQI+.
We have grown considerably in the last five years, and we now support ten times as many people a year, with five times the budget. Along the way we've re-branded, undergone a digital transformation, become user-led and significantly expanded our team. This rapid change reflects both the extent of the community needs, and our ambition to meet those. We're looking for trustees who can help us go to the next level as we set our strategy for the next five years.
Trustees play a key role in ensuring that Unfold achieves its core purpose and overseeing the overall management and administration of the charity. They also help to ensure that Unfold has a clear strategic vision and that we are working in line with our charitable aims. Trustees support and challenge Unfold’s CEO to enable Unfold to thrive.
We are looking for two Trustees to support our vision and take on the following responsibilities:
Responsibilities
- Engage with and be accountable to our service-user accountability structures, our Youth Advisory Council and our Women’s Advisory Council, who support us in setting strategic direction and to whom we are accountable.
- Support and advise on Unfold’s vision, goals and activities
- Approve operational strategies and policies and monitor and evaluate their implementation
- Oversee the charity’s budgets and financial plans and monitor and evaluate progress
- Ensure that risks are being identified, monitored and managed effectively
- Ensure the effective administration of the charity
- Provide support and challenge to Unfold’s CEO
- Keep up to date with changes within the environment that Unfold operates
- Contribute to reviews of the charity’s governance
- Attend board meetings and be adequately prepared to contribute to the discussion. These meetings are held in person in our fully accessible London office.
- Support the promotion of Unfold's aims and reputation
- Contribute to the charity’s sub-committees and attend sub-committee meetings adequately prepared to contribute to the discussion
Skill and Experience
- Knowledge and experience of the charity sector
- An understanding of and commitment to participatory and inclusive governance.
- An understanding of and the ability to support Unfold’s fundraising strategy
- An understanding of statutory services which might be supporting families, children, young people, mental health and wellbeing, which might be through knowledge and experience in local authorities or the public sector
- Strong communication skills and able to contribute to board discussions
- Knowledge or lived experience in the borough of Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea or neighbouring boroughs
- Understanding of safeguarding the welfare of children or vulnerable adults
Personal Attributes
- Personable and positive
- Willingness to learn and contribute.

“The foodbank was there when we really needed it, it was an absolute lifeline.”
We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That’s why we provide three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. We are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.
We are looking for additional trustees to help Uttlesford Food Bank meet demand for our services. Experience of strategy development, press/PR and/or charity governance would be extremely useful. We welcome applications from current volunteers and partner agencies, but are also keen to hear from candidates not currently working with us who want to help their local community.
We would like to have greater representation from South Uttlesford and would encourage applicants from Dunmow, Stansted and the surrounding areas. We would particularly like applicants who may have used a foodbank and experienced some of the issues our clients face. We are looking for a balance between those who know us already and those who will bring fresh thinking to the board.
By supporting the governance of the food bank, you are part of a team providing a vital holistic support function in your local community, ensuring a dignified experience to anyone visiting or anyone who comes into contact with Uttlesford Foodbank.
Please apply through CharityJobs in the first instance, providing a CV and cover letter detailing why you are interested in this role and your relevant experience. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an informal interview with members of the Board of Trustees at Uttlesford Foodbank.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

Our approach to diversity supports everything else we are committed to do and we expect all our Board members to demonstrate a personal commitment to equality and diversity, social justice and inclusion. We are looking to increase the diversity of our Board as our Board needs to be as diverse as our colleagues and clients. We also know that people from different backgrounds bring perspectives and skills that create fresh ideas, thinking and approaches, making the way work is undertaken more effective and efficient.

At Phoenix we use our expertise to support people in their personal recovery and to improve their lives. We are dedicated to advocating for people who are often overlooked and stigmatised, to ensure they have a fair chance to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. Our aim is for everyone to be able to achieve their potential for themselves, their families, and communities.
For too long women have had to fit into a treatment system that doesn’t work for them, we believe effective treatment must meet the specific gendered needs of women. That is why we developed Ophelia House a specialist trauma-responsive service exclusively for women.
We are looking to appoint a new trustee to our Ophelia House at the Ley Community Subsidiary Board.
The Ley Community was established as a charity in 1973 and functioned as an independent therapeutic community until 2022 when after joining the Phoenix Group it was transformed the service into a specialist trauma-responsive service exclusively for women.
Along with a keen interest in specialist provision for women, we would welcome people with a range of lived and professional experience, including researchers, academics and people working in the field of trauma or criminal justice. A connection to Oxford would also be welcome.
Ideally our new trustee will come with an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship. Previous experience of being a trustee is not essential.
Board members are expected to attend all Board meetings (5 times a year) which are held in Oxford. Phoenix Futures does not remunerate Board members but out of pocket expenses are reimbursed.
Full details of responsibilities and the person specification required can be found by downloading the candidate brief.
The closing date for applications is 30th July 2024.
We anticipate the interviews will be held in the summer and will be in person in Oxford.
