Head of Commercial Bid Writing

Key Purpose of the role
As a Head of Commercial Bid Writing, you will lead the bid writing team to write multi-million-pound winning bids for agreed contracts, tenders and frameworks in line with the agreed operating model, enabling United Response to retain and grow income in a sustainable way.
Working closely with the Associate Director of Business Development, Senior Relationship Managers, operational subject matter experts you will ensure that all tenders, are written to an excellent standard and meet necessary criteria within internal and procurement timeframes. You will articulate and illustrate information provided to you as well as work up concepts into creative and innovative ideas, in line with The United Response strategy and brand that will lead to significant income growth. This will include research, example gathering, development of new initiatives and engaging internal and external stakeholders, to include in model development and submissions which will lead to significant increases in income. You will lead on the development of comprehensive blue prints for each of our contracts, which will include:
- Rigorous and comprehensive cost benefit analysis for all of our services and bids.
- Comprehensive budgets for bids to ensure that the ROI is met and that the contract is sustainable in the long terms.
- A full risk assessment for the contract to inform decision making for a bid no bid scenario.
Who you are
To be successful, you will have experience of writing bids and frameworks in the social care sector alongside the ability to lead on the development of comprehensive blue prints for contracts. You will have experience of leading and developing rigorous and comprehensive cost benefit analysis for multi million pound contracts and tenders and comprehensive budgets for bids to ensure that the ROI is met.
You will have leadership and motivational experience with a multicultural staff team with the ability to create a high performance environment, while setting and monitoring measures that reflect the corporate objectives and customer goals.

UCA SU represents 5,200 students, primarily across three main sights at Farnham, Epson and Canterbury. We are an independent democratic charity and membership organisation; we have student leadership at every level.
We're a democratic, membership organisation and all students at the University of Creative Arts are automatically members of the Union. Overall legal responsibility for the Students' Union rests with our Board of Trustees which is made up of three full-time Sabbatical Officers, four student trustees and three external trustees. The Sabbatical officers are elected each year by, and from, the student membership of the university. They take a year out of their studies (or immediately after graduating) to take on a fulltime paid staff role and to serve as a trustee.
We have done a huge amount of work over the last 6 months to turn the organisation around to ensure it is wholly focussed on supporting our diverse membership who study at the three campuses. We have updated our staffing structure to have our expertise equally focussed on each campus and have also changed our sabbatical officer structure to do the same.

We are two small, international charities with huge networks, scope and ambition. We have a track record of collaboration on brilliant projects that bring together ideas, innovations and innovators.
The Internet of Production is a UK charity that brings together a global alliance dedicated to building a future of decentralised and distributed manufacturing. We seek to enable a sustainable and globally networked system of production; to complement mass production and global supply chains with ‘production by the masses’ and local enterprise.
The Global Innovation Gathering is German non-profit association that brings together a vibrant, diverse community of innovation hubs, makerspaces, hackerspaces and other grassroots innovation communities with individual innovators, makers, technologists and changemakers.
The Grant Fundraiser will be employed by the Internet of Production and part-funded by the Global Innovation Gathering.
Grants will usually be £50k to £500k, and larger grants will also be sought in consortia with existing partners in the Internet of Production Alliance and the Global Innovation Gathering. Our funding proposals are usually focused on creating opportunities for others in our networks – whilst maintaining the core of our organisations.

Role & Responsibilities:
- Write and submit grant applications, including narratives and any additional materials (such as detailed budgets, budget justifications, workplaces, monitoring and evaluation plans, logical frameworks, pitch decks, etc).
- Work closely with the CEOs of the Internet of Production and the Global Innovation Gathering (also successful grant writers) and with inspiring networks of visionary experts to design exciting, effective and fundable concepts and projects for grant applications.
- Plan appropriately to best fulfil a pipeline of grant opportunities, where some opportunities may be very short notice and some may require months of co-authoring.
- Assist with seeking out and prioritising potential grant opportunities from around the world.
- Develop a master bid document or other grant application tools and manage and maintain grant application files and folders etc for each organisation.
Person Specification:
- Extensive experience in roles that included significant grant writing.
- Experience of Horizon Europe grants, research funding or other large consortia grants.
- Exceptionally effective and clear writing style, with excellent English, including when under time pressure. Ability to speak German could be helpful but is not required.
- Understanding or appreciation of issues/sectors including poverty, resilience, climate change, economic development, digitalisation, localisation, environmental sustainability and ‘green’ initiatives, etc, would be very helpful.

OVERVIEW OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
FUNDRAISING
- Be a point of contact for fundraising, ensuring a positive experience for funders and managing financial transactions to agreed fundraising policies and processes.
- Develop a regional Grant Programme, focusing on unrestricted income and feeding into fundraising management reporting.
- Identify, research, and communicate income and partnership opportunities, working proactively with colleagues across the Group to scope fundable initiatives that provide added value.
- Work alongside the team to develop high-quality grant funding applications, cases for support, and budgets. Complete the end-to-end process, ensuring all applications are thorough and competitive.
- Oversee grant reporting and invoicing, ensuring prompt fulfilment in line with all grant agreements and reporting requirements, liaising with relevant teams across the Group.
- Plan, implement and manage various campaigns and activities, which may include but are not limited to local events, national events, outreach, and fundraising opportunities.
PARTNERSHIP BUILDING
- Attend networking events to build engagement and partnerships with local and national organisations.
- Build a rolling calendar of charity of the year application deadlines. Provide excellent stewardship, using innovative ways to keep all parties engaged and informed of relevant news and updates by SIG.

Project Accountant

This is a newly created role for a Project Accountant to join a locally respected Not-for-Profit organisation in Uxbridge. This position has been created in recognition of the need to maximise grant funding, support applications, manage the financials (spend against budget) of a significant capital project as well as general capital expenditure. The role will support the Finance Director to develop/manage a rolling cashflow forecast for the projects.
This is an excellent opportunity to work closely with the Finance Director as well as senior leaders of the organisation to use your commercial acumen.
Detailed duties will include:
- Accurate accounting for all projects, including establishment of required project and/or account codes in finance system to record receipt of income and/or grant funding and budgeted spend.
- Notify stakeholders of receipt of funds and follow up status of project spend and completion.
- Review actual expenditure against budget on a regular basis and review and discuss variances with budget holders. Prepare draft funding claims and/or expenditure returns for submission to relevant authorities.
- Monitor and identify new opportunities for grant or other funding, provide assistance to relevant departments with preparing and submitting bids for funding.
- Business Partnering with non-finance managers in order to develop processes and the understanding of financial requirements
- Receive and log capital expenditure requests as part of the budget setting process, liaise with stakeholders to ensure all relevant information is received, advise on the status of requests, establish project codes if required and monitor spend against budget.
- Ensure procurement policies and processes are adhered to, including receipt of three quotes or formal tender process depending on the estimated value of the spend.
- Ensure actual capital expenditure is within approved budget, identify potential or actual cost overruns for review and consideration.
- Ensure all capital expenditure is recorded in the fixed asset register and depreciated in accordance with the rates set out in the Financial Regulations.
- Develop and maintain a rolling cashflow forecast to record expected receipt of funds and payment of capital and other project expenditure.
- Identify minimum and maximum cash requirements and assist in developing effective cash management strategy.
In order to be successful in the role, we are looking for experience of project accounting, to be able to set up and monitor budgets for specific projects. Ideally you will have experience of managing capital projects and/or research grants from an accounting perspective.
You will have a keen eye for detail, so that grant funding is set up correctly to be not only compliant but to maximise the spend. Working with a number of senior stakeholders, excellent communication skills are paramount.
This role is based in Uxbridge and will be on site for c4 days per week though much less during quieter periods. Fantastic benefits include generous pension scheme of 20% and extremely attractive holiday entitlement of 37 days.
