About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the strategic and operational delivery of the FFLM’s aims and objectives. Reporting directly to the Board of Trustees and working closely with the President and senior officers, the CEO will play a pivotal role in driving the organisation forward, ensuring its long-term sustainability and impact.

The CEO will:

• Develop and execute a strategic vision for the FFLM, including 3–5-year plans to enhance our reputation and influence.
• Strengthen internal and external relationships with stakeholders, including professional bodies, government agencies, and policymakers.
• Oversee the organisation’s financial management, ensuring sound budgeting and sustainable income streams.
• Represent the FFLM publicly, managing media relations and acting as an ambassador for the organisation.
• Support and manage the FFLM’s office team and senior officers, fostering a culture of respect, inclusivity, and continuous improvement.

Freshwater Habitats Trust is the UK’s leading charity for all freshwaters. We are an evidence-based, conservation charity that works to protect UK and European freshwater wildlife through practical and innovative nature conservation projects. 

Data and evidence are vital in prioritising our work across the organisation and building the Freshwater Network. They are also vital when influencing external audiences to achieve our mission to reverse the decline in freshwater biodiversity. 

This is a new role in the organisation and reflects an urgent requirement to collate, organise and manage a large volume of research, survey and other data collected by Freshwater Habitats Trust over the last four decades, the potential of which is not currently being fully realised.

About the Role

In this role you will lead the development of new programmes and institutional funding bids in line with Cord’s peacebuilding approach and 5 main programme areas. You will manage proposal submissions to Cord’s key donors such as the EU, US State Department, GIZ, SDC, UN Peacebuilding Fund etc. You will be working closely with country teams to design and write proposals based on strong project designs developed in partnership with our local partners.

The role will also operate at a strategic level by managing Cord’s relationships with key donors and shaping how Cord communicates about its programmes and the added-value that Cord brings.

Job Title: CEO

Salary: Actual salary is £36,000 per year. (FTE £45,000)

Contract/ Hours: 4 days per week / 0.8FTE. The normal working week is 30 hours.

Introduction and background

The Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA) was founded in 2011 by people with lived experience, healthcare professionals, and organisations who understood the impact of perinatal mental problems and shared a commitment to improving the lives of women and their families.

Today, the MMHA is a UK-wide charity and network of over 130 member organisations. We work with parents, families, clinicians, and academics to ensure all women, birthing people, babies, and families have access to high-quality, compassionate mental health care. We bring the perinatal mental health community together and make change happen by combining the power of real-life experience with clinical and professional expertise.

We actively contribute to significantly improving mental health outcomes for people who experience discrimination, trauma and deprivation during the perinatal period and tackle systemic inequity and injustice.

We are now seeking a Chief Executive to take over from our interim CEO and lead the MMHA in the next stage of our development.

We have recently been awarded a 5-year grant by the National Lottery Community Fund to tackle maternal mental health inequities through community action. This project, due to start in Spring 2025, will develop, test and replicate a model of community-based decision making, support and service provision that is led by women with lived experience. This project aims to achieve system change locally and nationally to improve the mental health of marginalised women and is the next phase of the MMHA’s programme to tackle maternal mental health inequities across the UK. This will be our biggest piece of work over the next five years and will dovetail with other activities aimed at achieving our mission, where funding allows.

Main responsibilities

Leadership and strategy

• To provide clear strategic and inspirational leadership to the MMHA To drive the MMHA forward into the next stage of its development
• To ensure MMHA tackles maternal mental health inequities across the UK
• To be responsible for the management and administration of the charity within the strategic and accountability frameworks laid down by the Board of Trustees
• To work with Chair and Trustees in shaping the MMHA’s strategic mission, policies, aims and objectives
• To ensure long term sustainability of the MMHA through effective governance, sound finance and implementation of operational plans.

People

• To take overall responsibility for all permanent and temporary staff, and other members of the MMHA team, including contractors, champions and ambassadors
• To promote diversity and equality of opportunity for all staff in accordance with the MMHA EDI policy and strategy and foster a workplace culture built on inclusion, respect and equality.

Governance, finance and compliance

• To support the Chair and Trustees to ensure that the governance of the charity is proportionate and effective, and that the charity fulfils its legal, statutory, regulatory and moral duties and responsibilities
• To be responsible overall for the financial sustainability of the charity, and ensure that there are effective mechanisms to ensure the robustness of external and internal controls (financial and non-financial), supported by the Consultant Finance Director
• To support the Consultant Finance Director to ensure the timely and complete preparation of key reports, information and activities, including management accounts, budgets, annual report and accounts, and payroll
• To ensure that the major risks to which the charity is exposed are reviewed regularly by the Board and the Executive team, systems have been established to mitigate these risks
• To work with the Chair and the Board Secretary to ensure that meetings of trustees are effective and that Trustees have appropriate information to perform their duties.

Income generation

• To take overall responsibility for the MMHA’s income generation activities, securing the future of the organisation and delivering its ambition for the mental health of women during the perinatal period
• To lead on all trust, foundation and lottery fundraising, establishing and maintaining relationships, including with the National Lottery Community Fund
• To support the Marketing & Partnerships Director to develop corporate partnerships, taking the lead on the relationship with Tommee Tippee
• To work with the Marketing & Partnerships Director to secure funding from individuals.

Communications and external affairs

• To support the Head of Engagement to maintain a relevant, diverse and effective range of members organisations, and ensure their ongoing contribution to achieving the goals of the charity 4
• To have oversight of the social, economic, clinical and policy context and how they impact on maternal mental health and MMHA strategy
• To ensure the Alliance is working effectively across the 4 UK nations and devolved administrations
• To act as a visible leader for the charity, representing the MMHA at external events and networking opportunities, and act as a spokesperson
• To oversee the development and delivery of marketing and communications strategies which effectively promote all aspects of the Alliance.

Other/service delivery

• To embed MMHA’s values throughout the organisation
• To promote a culture of commitment, trust, mutual support and professional behaviour
• To run the charity efficiently and effectively by ensuring that it has an appropriate management structure and management systems in order to fulfil its strategic objectives and to carry out its work

We seek a Senior Programme Officer – Development & Advocacy to ensure timely and effective implementation of project deliverables through day-to-day management of activities and processes.

The HAMRAH Initiative is designed to address the significant challenges faced by Afghan civil society organisations (CSOs) forced into exile, particularly women-led organisations, as they continue to provide protection for vulnerable groups within Afghanistan. The initiative focuses on fostering collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and advocacy to safeguard the rights of vulnerable populations, including women and girls.

Through sustained technical support and resources, HAMRAH aims to build a stronger Afghan civil society equipped with essential organisational infrastructure, leadership skills, and collaborative networks to preserve hard-won gains and advance rights and protections for vulnerable groups.

Currently, we are supporting 10 Afghan CSOs in exile, located around the world, that continue working partially or fully inside Afghanistan to protect vulnerable populations, including women and girls, LGBTQ+ communities, and individuals with disabilities.

Overview    

The Senior Programme Officer - Development & Advocacy will play a vital role in advancing the HAMRAH initiative and strengthening the resilience of cohort organisations through fundraising, research, joint policy advocacy, communication, and capacity development. This position requires a dynamic and caring professional with experience working with Global South CSOs, as well as the passion and empathy to drive strategic initiatives, build partnerships, and amplify programmatic impact. In this role, you will collaborate closely with HAMRAH's partner cohort organisations (10 CSOs in exile), mentors, the advisory board, and other key stakeholders. The right post holder will be comfortable responding to the needs of a cohort of organisations whose priorities may change, which can lead to working in ways that require flexibility. There will be opportunities to explore, discuss and debate new ideas and consider how the latest research could benefit the cohort of organisations.

The Senior Programme Officer - Development & Advocacy will report to Programme Director.

Job Description 

Fundraising and Grant Writing: Work with the Programme Director to identify funding opportunities, lead the drafting and reviewing of proposals, concept notes, and grant applications for the HAMRAH initiative and its cohort organisations. Monitor funding trends and donor priorities to develop tailored and compelling proposals.

Policy and Joint Advocacy: Support HAMRAH and cohort organisations in designing and implementing targeted joint advocacy campaigns, including strategy and messaging development.  Help facilitate policy dialogue and engagement with relevant stakeholders, including government officials, donors, and civil society networks, to advance the priorities of HAMRAH and its cohort organisations.

Research and Analysis: Conduct research and analysis to inform programme strategies, advocacy efforts, and policy development. This includes helping produce briefing papers, reports, and articles with clear recommendations based on HAMRAH’s work and evidence.  Also monitor emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities in Afghanistan and other exiled communities across Global South to ensure programming remains responsive, relevant and impactful. 

Communication and Reporting:  Lead the development of newsletters and other digital communication materials to showcase HAMRAH’s achievements and cohort organisations’ work.  If needed and approved by cohort, coordinate digital engagement strategies, including website updates and social media campaigns, to enhance HAMRAH visibility and outreach. Lead the drafting of narrative and financial reports to donors.

Capacity Development: support assessment of capacity-building needs of cohort organisations and develop tailored training plans to address identified gaps. When needed, provide technical support to cohort organisations to strengthen their operational and programmatic capacities.

Learning and Exchange: Support the planning and execution of online and in-person cross-learning exchange workshops with partner organisations in the Global South. Facilitate opportunities for collaboration and collective learning, and help establish global solidarity networks, platforms, and resources to enhance knowledge-sharing among cohort organisations.

Person specification 

Required 

• At least 5 years of experience in programme support across fundraising, joint advocacy, partnership, research and capacity development, particularly in the non-profit or international development sectors.

• Degree in a relevant field, or equivalent knowledge that could have been gained through lived experiences or informal learning. 

• Demonstrated experience in grant writing and successfully developing funding proposals for institutional donors, foundations, or multilateral agencies.

• Previous experience in policy dialogue, joint advocacy and policy development, particularly engaging with government stakeholders, donors, and civil society networks.

• Experience in research, mapping, analysis, and writing skills, with the ability to produce high-quality reports, proposals, and policy documents.

• Demonstrated communication and networking skills, including experience in digital engagement and social media strategy.

• Strong Empathy and care for activists and human rights defenders, with a strong commitment to enabling their work and safeguarding their well-being who are operating in a complex and challenging environment.

• Demonstrated cultural competency, with confidence in building relationships across different cultures, navigating power dynamics, and engaging with stakeholders from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.

• A “self-starter” able to work independently and collaboratively, with the ability and energy to multi-task and thrive in a small team and flat organisational structures.

This position is aligned to the East Anglia Methodist District and will work with circuits and churches in rural, coastal and urban settings. The role includes a wide range of learning and development activities within the life of the church. These are aimed at supporting, encouraging and inspiring the church in living out ‘Our Calling: to respond to the gospel of God’s love in Christ and to live out its discipleship in worship and mission’. The Learning Network works primarily with lay and ordained church leaders, equipping them as they in turn seek to equip all God’s people.

As the successful applicant aligned to the East Anglia District, you will work with other team members across Learning Network and the wider Connexional Team, to support, encourage and inspire Methodist people in all aspects of their calling as together we seek to be an inclusive, justice seeking, evangelistic and growing church.

About you

The role includes:

enabling, equipping and resourcing through preparation, delivery and evaluation of a wide range of contextually relevant learning and development activities, events and initiatives, both for onsite and online contexts;
supporting circuits in exploring vision and developing mission plans;
facilitating effective and potentially transformational conversations on a variety of subjects;
helping churches in their commitment to support the Church’s aspiration to be inclusive, justice seeking, evangelistic and growing;
working collaboratively with colleagues to plan, develop and review learning and development programmes;
contributing your particular gifts and experiences to enhance learning and development across the connexion
a requirement to travel, and work during some evenings and weekends
a requirement to live within the East Anglia District of the Methodist Church
a requirement to be a member of a church in good standing with Churches Together in Britain and Ireland or equivalent.

Are you a Media and PR professional who wants to use your skills to help support young people and their families to deal with the impact of cancer, both during and beyond treatment?

Charity People is partnering with Young Lives vs. Cancer to recruit an interim part time Media and PR Officer to join their team.

Joining the Media Team at a key time as the organisation embarks on the first stage of its North Star vision which will see them working with partner organisations to close gaps in the current provision of care for young people and their families by 2035.

Contract: Nine month interim role, four days (28 hours) per week

Salary: £34,616 FTE (outside London); £36,512 FTE (London)

Location: Home based with some travel to London or Bristol - ideally around one to two days per month

This is an important role where you will lead on communicating a portfolio of key areas of Young Lives vs Cancer's policy work, fundraising activities and services, to a wide range of audiences, identifying reactive opportunities and through targeted media campaigns.

Core responsibilities within the role will include:

• Manage media partnerships such as national media fundraising appeals or campaigns
• Establish quality effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including Media and News outlets, journalists and charity partners
• Participate in the reactive news desk rota, responding to urgent media enquiries and providing advice to staff and senior managers
• Take advantage of opportunities to provide and publish reactive comment, opinion and content in a timely manner to involve Young Lives vs Cancer in news stories and debates that align with the charity's priorities
• Brief national, regional and local media (print, broadcast and online) on Young Lives vs Cancer and its activities. Support the Head of Media and PR to implement reputation management plans
• Brief staff spokespeople (including senior staff and specialist social workers) ahead of media interviews to ensure they are prepared and ready to speak on message
• Use data and research to engage media and news outlets
• Produce messaging, position statements, prepare for media interviews and deal with complex reactive press enquiries
• Contribute to the development and delivery of the charity's strategic media plan - lead a strategic development priority area, working across the team and organisation
• Develop and implement creative, effective media plans for campaigns and projects, in-line with the charity's overall strategic objectives
• Gather and develop stories and take a proactive role in identifying opportunities in online and offline media to place news and feature stories on Young Lives vs Cancer activities, campaigns, and services
• Initiate and maintain good working relationships with a network of editors, journalists and broadcasters, especially within the health, education and social care media, and ensure they are briefed appropriately on Young Lives vs Cancer activities and issues
• Write press releases, features, articles, opinion pieces and statements; ensuring these reflect Young Lives vs Cancer's values and key messages.
• Work closely with the Brand and Marketing Communications team to understand local business priorities and effectively coordinate and plan activity.

The Media and PR Officer will have previous experience of working in a Media and PR role. The successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of media monitoring and evaluation; the ability to engage positively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders; excellent storytelling ability; and the ability to translate complex information in clear, understandable messages.

To succeed in this role, it is essential that you have experience in line managing a team, as you will be responsible for motivating and supporting your YDLs to achieve their objectives. • Lead and manage a team of Youth Development Leads to deliver Foundation programmes, including outdoor learning and off-site visits.
• Oversee the delivery of these Programmes, ensuring effective implementation and quality.
