The Political Studies Association (PSA) exists to develop and promote the study and teaching of politics and related disciplines. Founded in 1950, we are the leading association in our field in the United Kingdom, with an international membership including academics in political science, theorists and practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and students in higher education as well as members from the school community.

Location: All roles are based at our offices in Camden London but the PSA staff work hybrid and supports its staff to work remotely. The post-holder will also contribute to the association’s income and membership targets, work within assigned budgets and creatively with partners as well as monitoring and reporting performance to trustees.
Operational priorities in the first year in being in post will include:

Team Structure & Context: The post will line manage a team of membership, communications and events personnel including the services of several external expert suppliers. Main responsibilities:
Governance, Strategy and Leadership:
- Work with the PSA’s trustees and PSA team to shape and deliver the PSA’s strategy and annual business plans and support our aim to be the leading advocate and scholarly community for Political Studies in the UK
- Ensure key performance indicators relating to your work area are monitored, reported and used to continuously improve our operations.

Membership Services and Communications:

- Devising the PSA’s membership, marketing and communications strategies with the wider PSA Team and trustees so that the association maintains and enhances its profile, size, and impact
- Manage team members and contractors to ensure the development and delivery of these strategies including the organisation’s membership services, codes of conduct, professional standards and package of member benefits
- Work with your team and trustees in shaping our membership offer which supports our members as they progress through their studies and careers. This includes the development and delivery of new membership categories including the PSA Fellowship
- Work with your team members to continuously improve the PSA’s member communications and content ensuring that all web and other digital and printed content and data is timely and good quality. You will ensure an ongoing programme of content and calls for action including promotion of Political Insight magazine and journals, the PSA Blog, e-newsletters, and social media as well as the efficient and effective deployment of the CRM so we can give our members, donors and stakeholders the best experience possible
- Work with your team to ensure the membership recruitment, renewal and services run smoothly and achieve the continued growth in the association and that expectations are met
- Run the annual academic prizes programme as a part of our PSA member benefits package and in partnership with others including the American Political Science Association and the Academy of Social Sciences
- Support the CEO and Head of Operations and Finance with implementing the PSA’s grant and other support programmes as part of our member benefits package

Programme Management:
Deliver the PSA’s Schools programme:
- Support PSA trustees in creating a programme in line with the PSA’s strategy
- Lead team members, suppliers, and partners to deliver this programme to as wide a range of teachers and pupils as possible
- Promote the teaching and study of Politics particularly post-16 and at undergraduate level
- Develop and deliver an offering for teachers and students (particularly post-16 resources and events) involving input from academics in line with PSA Strategy
- Support the PSA’s trustees on engagement and advocacy concerning post-16 curriculum and assessment.
Supporting Students, early career academics and those focussed on higher education teaching and learning:
- Support your team members in managing member networks including the PSA’s Teaching and Learning Network (TLN) and Early Career Network (ECN), its volunteer convenors (committee members) and programme of communications, resources and events and imbed these as a clear part of our membership offering
- Support your team members in undertaking the election and training of incoming committee members and ensure the development of appropriate procedures and annual actions plans so that they adhere to the byelaws of the association and agreed budgets
- Support the PSA’s trustees with engagement and advocacy concerning Higher Education teaching and learning and the content of Politics courses
- Work with team members to organise and develop the annual PSA undergraduate Conference, and develop a wider programme of work with opportunities to undergraduate students to engage with the PSA
- With support from the team, ensure the effective operation of the PSA’s family of specialist groups in particular the management and growth of their own membership and communications as well as supporting their events and, in liaison with the Finance Manager, their own income and expenditure
- Work with team members, trustees and association members on the provision of developmental activities including mentoring and training programmes.
Delivering the PSA’s Annual Conference, annual lecture, and other events:
- Devise in consultation with colleagues and trustees, a conference and events strategy for the organisation aimed to bring our community together, further our strategy and maximise revenues. This should include events supporting all membership types, specialist groups and our networks.
- Manage the team responsible for delivery and ensure productive relationships between staff and suppliers as well as academic and commercial partners
- Develop and manage project budgets including the Annual Conference from inception to completion in consultation with team members and the Operations and Finance Team, reporting to the Chief Executive and Trustees.
- Oversee existing systems to monitor progress and expenditure through the regular scrutiny and review of budgets and project plans, from proposal though implementation and delivery
- Support team members in the delivery of PSA’s annual conference and the wider events programme, ensuring that all of these are of the highest quality and linked to the PSA’s wider strategic priorities ensuring all these events are risk-assessed, insured, delivered cost-effectively, on time and to a high professional standard
- Exploit opportunities to increase membership, profile, reach, and income including sponsorship and advertising as well as opportunities to increase inclusion through technology. This will include you and your team building relationships with potential sponsors, advertisers and exhibitors to maximise the opportunities available at PSA events and in our publications including selling sponsorship/stand/exhibition space to potential exhibitors/partners
- Conduct post-event evaluation to ensure continuous improvement and assess impact
- Ensure a pipeline of future annual conferences and other events through effective engagement with trustees and university Politics departments and other stakeholders.

Role Summary
The role will support the Development team to successfully raise over £3.5 million annually through fundraising, in addition to a concurrent £19.25m capital campaign. The successful candidate will efficiently manage the day to day running of The Old Vic’s individual giving scheme, reporting to the Head of Individual Giving and working with the Individual Giving Officer to implement and carry out a yearly strategic plan to retain and increase support across all levels of Membership and wider areas of giving.
Areas of responsibility
Individual Giving
- Contribute to developing a strategic plan for individual giving including Membership, small to medium sized donations across all giving channels.
- Assume responsibility for The Old Vic’s philanthropic individual giving Membership scheme, OV Together.
- Retain and increase support by delivering excellent stewardship, including delivery of benefits and events, and communication with donors.
- Generate and convert new donor prospects in order to meet and exceed agreed annual individual giving targets of c. £1.25 million to contribute to the overall Development team target.
- Line manage the Individual Giving Officer, monitoring key performance indicators and objectives to ensure that targets are met.
Administration
- Oversee lists and draft communications going out to individual supporters including season announcements, updates and invitations and segmenting mailing lists when necessary.
- Oversee ticket bookings and catering reservations for supporters and to innovate time-saving new processes for automating bookings and reservations.
- Ensure Membership collateral is regularly updated to deadlines.
- Ensure database records are updated with donations, research notes, Memberships and event attendance.
- Monitor progress against targets, ensuring fundraising costs stay within budgeted expenditure and Gift Aid restrictions.
- Devise and with input from the Events team maintain a system for accurately logging and tracking costs incurred for delivering Membership benefits in line with HMRC and Gift Aid guidelines.
- Ensure that all data complies with procedures for data integrity (e.g. Gift Aid, GDPR and PCI compliance).
- Oversee the processing of monthly and annual Direct Debits by the Individual Giving Officer.
- Support the administration of the American Associates of The Old Vic membership.
Prospecting and New Support
- Identify new routes, channels and audiences to promote other ways of giving amongst existing Old Vic contacts, our database and new prospects.
- Innovate and implement new fundraising projects, such as Tap to Donate scheme, and creating supporting documents (e.g. case for support and rebrand of membership scheme).
- Use data analysis to track Membership trends and prospecting, with support from the Individual Giving Officer, to inform strategy and cultivation efforts for upgrading and recruitment.
- Identify opportunities to further develop relationships with our existing supporters (e.g. cross-sell) and feeding this into strategic plans for Individual Giving.
- Support the Senior Development Operations Manager on the maintenance of a team-wide prospect tracking system and help monitor the solicitation process.
General
- To ensure The Old Vic’s programmes, website and social media are regularly updated with Development information and liaise with Marketing as appropriate in achieving these tasks.

BACKGROUND
The External Communications Officer forms part of the Communications and Engagement Directorate, reporting into the Senior External Communications Manager. Given the growth of the Institute, the external communications officer would join a busy team in a vibrant and energetic communications and marketing department. The postholder manages a wide portfolio of projects, announcements and collaborations, working with stakeholders and partner organisation at the local, national and international level. We are looking for a Senior Project Manager to coordinate an 18-month project exploring how we can operationalise a new in-work poverty benchmark for employers in London. This benchmark, developed by the Social Market Foundation, has the potential to improve the lives of low paid workers, building on the success of the Living Wage campaigns
The in-work poverty benchmark project is a new and exciting pilot project at the Living Wage Foundation. We want this person to build a case for employers going further than our existing accreditations and taking a more holistic approach to tackling in work poverty. This role would help us develop the pilot through employer case studies and extensive stakeholder engagement with a view to launching a new vehicle to recognise employers who adopt the in-work poverty benchmark.
Three key parts of the role would be working with:
- Our Membership team and our Operations and Insights team: to scope out and enhance their capacity to support employers to implement the benchmark through e.g. workshops, provision of guidance and /or new ways of working with employers.
- The cross organisational Making London a Living Wage City (MLLWC) team to build upon the successes and networks of this project and align where helpful to encourage London employers to go further
- London based community organisers to ensure that the experiences and stories of low paid workers are a primary driver of the case for change and how we develop this work.
The ideal candidate would be a proactive and experienced project manager with experience of building and implementing new products, projects or services. They should have excellent communication skills and a track record of engaging diverse stakeholders and building a network.
Living Wage Foundation
The Living Wage Foundation was launched in 2011 by Citizens UK to tackle in-work poverty and ensure that workers earn enough to live on and participate in family and community life. Citizens UK is the home of community organising with diverse civil society alliances set up to develop leaders to work on the issues that matter to them, such as the Living Wage. Other projects include Parent Action and Sponsor Refugees to add depth to the impact of Citizens UK’s work.
The Living Wage is a movement of businesses, organisations and people who believe that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. The real Living Wage is an independently-calculated hourly rate based on the cost of living and announced each October ahead of Living Wage Week, our annual celebration of a growing network of over 15,000 Living Wage Employers.
The Living Wage Foundation celebrates employers that voluntarily choose to pay the real Living Wage through an accreditation scheme that recognises a long-term commitment to fair pay and has secured pay rises for 475,000 low paid workers. Over recent years, the Living Wage Foundation has built on the success of the real Living Wage by creating new responsible employment standards – Living Hours and Living Pension – for those employers who want to go further and provide the security workers need now and in the future.
Main Responsibilities
Contribute to the achievement of the LWF and CUK’s strategic aims
· Work with the Living Wage Foundation team to embed this project into the wider work and strategy of the Foundation, and to identify and share learning from across our projects on how to mobilise employer action to tackle poverty.
Develop and manage external relationships
· Develop and implement a stakeholder engagement plan to support and promote the project.
· Manage strong relationships with the project partners and funders to involve and update them on the project as required.
· Progress our existing partnerships whilst proactively securing new partnerships with organisations that can help promote and build demand for the in-work poverty benchmark.
· Develop a wide-ranging network of stakeholders with an interest in this project, finding ways to involve them in its development.
· Coordinate and manage a project working group of senior Living Wage Employers, in work poverty experts and employee stakeholders.
Build and manage projects and achieve work targets effectively
· Set up, manage and evaluate a set of action pilots with employers, low paid employees and relevant experts to develop and test the in-work poverty benchmark and the standards within it.
· Design and develop the recognition mechanism and support programme for employers who sign up to the in-work poverty benchmark.
· Provide regular progress reports and deliver agreed project milestones including events, reports and other agreed outputs.
· Oversee the project being integrated into our CRM system and developing robust project management systems.
Learning, expertise, wellbeing and inclusion
· Conduct desk research, stakeholder interviews and organise events as required to inform the project. Manage research partners to conduct additional research as required.
· Monitor, review, evaluate and write up pilot progress with each employer using qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods.
· Working with others to identity and share learning on how to mobilise employer action to tackle poverty, considering this in the development of the in-work poverty benchmark.
· Develop and host employer facing events to gain insight and test appetite to support the development of this work.
· Design and facilitate employer workshops and employee focus groups to identify best practice and shared learning.
· Produce a final report and recommendations for how the work might be taken forward at the conclusion of the project, presenting this to relevant stakeholders.
Communications
· Oversee the collation and dissemination of research and evidence to build the case for the in-work poverty benchmark. Work with the Living Wage Foundation Communications and Research team to enable this.
· Develop the support we offer Living Wage Employers that are interested in implementing the in-work poverty benchmark and lead the production and design of research reports, toolkits, best practice guides and other resources.
· Promote the Living Wage Foundation to build our reputation as a leader in good work practices for low paid workers, including launching research and reports and celebrating progress made.
· Represent the Living Wage Foundation at meetings, events and conference to build awareness and support for our work.
Develop and manage internal relationships:
· Build and manage strong relationships across the LWF and wider Citizens UK teams for effective collaboration and to support development of this work.
· Work closely with community organisers in London to ensure the voices of low paid workers are a leading influence on this project.
· Contribute to the LWF and Citizens UK Senior Management meetings and cross organisational working groups.
Generate income and resources
· Oversee the development and implementation of an employer fee structure for the in-work poverty benchmark vehicle.
· Work with the Head of Business Development and Policy to produce a sustainable fundraising strategy for this work whilst developing relationship with potential funders.
· Oversee the creation of proposals to secure funds from corporate partners and attract funding from grants or donations to support ongoing work.
