We are looking for someone both to deliver our immigration casework and to manage and develop our immigration advice services, including recruitment, line management & supervision of relevant staff and volunteers. The post holder will provide one-to-one legal immigration advice, casework and practical support to migrant and refugee clients in Brighton & Hove and Sussex in the areas of out-of-scope immigration and occasionally asylum work (up to OISC L2). You will also provide supervision for L1 and trainee staff and volunteer advisors as required. You will share the management of our broader advice & casework team, including generalist and resettlement casework, with our current generalist and resettlement managers.
You will be accredited to provide immigration advice at minimum OISC Level 2 and expected to carry a caseload of cases largely out of the scope of legal aid. For cases within scope you will make active referrals or signpost to legal aid providers wherever possible and practical.
Along with other managers you will lead on the development of our casework management system, AdvicePro, to ensure that agreed advice and organisational outcomes are embedded from the outset, and that staff and volunteers are trained and equipped to understand and provide these. You will be required to monitor and report against projects as needed by both funders and internally for e.g. the director and trustees.
You will be expected to participate in local networks and to participate and lead on conversations to develop immigration advice capacity in the city and region and to influence change and find solutions to the critical lack of immigration advice on the south coast.
You will have an awareness of clients’ holistic needs and be able to signpost and refer both internally and externally as appropriate to address needs including destitution; asylum support; children’s, family and adult social care; welfare benefits; housing & homelessness; access to mainstream and voluntary sector services including ESOL and employability, health and mental health care; and referrals into activities and services that can respond to people’s strengths and skills as well as their needs, including our own support groups and volunteering opportunities.
You will contribute to the senior management team of Voices, working closely with the Director, Head of Services, Generalist Advice Manager and Resettlement Manager to share oversight and reflections and planning of current operational needs and strategic planning.
You will be expected to contribute to broader learning and planning around developing our strategic plan and theory of change, including developing our work on the role of those with lived experience in our organisation.
We are currently the only free, L2-accredited, year-round provider of out-of-scope immigration advice on the South Coast, and increasing local immigration capacity is critical to address growing demand and changing demographics in the region. We are also seeing and will continue to see new arrivals and needs in the region over the next year and onwards including Hong Kong BNO nationals, Afghans resettled under the ARAP and ACRS schemes, EEA nationals who still have not registered for status, people required to transition to digital eVisas by 31st December 2024, and an increasing number of both newly arrived and established asylum seekers placed in emergency (‘contingency’) and dispersal Home Office accommodation.
Regular supervisions will be provided by the Director, as well as access to external training on specific issues where needed. However you will need to be ready to step immediately into a busy advice environment with the necessary confidence, skills and knowledge both to deliver a complex caseload and to manage a new team through an important moment in the growth of our advice and caseworker service.

Citizens Advice Southwark has been awarded funding by City Bridge Foundation to provide a welfare benefits advice service for Southwark residents and we are now seeking to recruit a full time welfare benefits caseworker.
The caseworker will be based between our two main offices in Peckham and Walworth and will assist with raising awareness and completing benefit claims, advocating on behalf of clients and submitting reviews and appeals. The caseworker will also train a team of volunteers to increase capacity and expertise and will act in a consultancy role for generalist advisers and frontline workers in other agencies in the borough.
To be successful you will need:
- At least one year’s full time (or part time equivalent) paid or unpaid recent experience of advice work.
- An in-depth knowledge of welfare benefits including those related to disability and sickness.

Requirements

- Ability to monitor and maintain Quality of Advice standards including checking accuracy of advice and benefit calculations.
- Good understanding of safeguarding principles and willingness to adhere to them
- Experience of using ICT systems and packages, and electronic resources in the provision of advice, record keeping and document production.
- Ability to work on own initiative and be flexible to business need.
- Demonstrable understanding of the issues affecting society and their implications for Citizens Advice clients and service provision.
- Ability to create a positive working environment in which equality, diversity and inclusion are well managed, dignity at work is upheld and staff are empowered and motivated to do their best.

About the role

Our Assessors are the first point of contact for members of the local community, who contact us by phone, in person via email. As part of a collaborative team, you will provide professional, impartial IAG to prison residents, motivate them, develop their work-related skills, and provide overall support to help them find employment, education, training, apprenticeships, or volunteering opportunities upon their release.
You will also manage and support a caseload of peer mentors and provide inspirational IAG and Employability programmes in both 1:1 and group sessions.
To be eligible for this role, you must hold an IAG qualification at level 4 or above. You must also possess the ability to build effective and professional relationships with individual clients, coupled with a non-judgmental attitude and a desire to support people in fulfilling their potential.

We’ve been working in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Care for over 15 years, supporting people with cancer and their families. We are looking for an enthusiastic, reliable, and confident person to join our Casework Team to help people to cope with the ‘cost of cancer’.

The ideal candidate will provide advice and support in person, via telephone, email and video call to patients undergoing treatment for cancer at Milton Keynes and Stoke Mandeville Hospitals. Macmillan Project Caseworkers will assist clients with complex welfare, debt and housing enquiries. This requires a good foundation knowledge of each advice area, so competence in these subjects is desirable, but full and ongoing training will be provided to support successful candidates in their professional development.
This is a challenging role, managing a demanding caseload and working with people at every stage of their cancer journey. All our advice work is carried out to the strictest quality standards, and we are committed to ensuring that all our advice work complements the wider services provided by both Citizens Advice and Macmillan Cancer Care.
Applicants need to be –
- Computer-literate, although training on our case recording systems will be given.
- Confident in working to performance targets.
- Able to show good communications skills, both written and verbal. These are essential in the role, as are excellent customer service skills with a non-judgemental approach.
- Prepared to work independently, sometimes remotely and also from a variety of community-based locations.
A minimum of 12 months’ experience in an advice agency or similar setting is desirable.
The successful Applicant/s will be asked to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
