In an exciting development, we’re looking for an exceptional individual - founder and current Managing Director Miranda McKearney OBE will be stepping into a more ambassadorial role, whilst continuing to support the organisation There is a well-established, active board of founding directors with wide ranging skills who will work with the new leader to develop EmpathyLab’s dynamic social impact.
Our four programmes are an annual Read For Empathy book collection; Empathy Day, every June; a Schools’ Programme and innovation work with publishers, authors and illustrators.
Key Responsibilities
• Work with the board to shape EmpathyLab’s strategic direction and oversee the development of its programmes
• Implement a fundraising strategy, including developing income from trusts/foundations; earned income and private donations
• Plan and monitor annual budgets with the director of finances support
• Lead organisational planning and deliver growth, ensuring programmes are constantly evolving
• Ensure that reporting & compliance requirements are met
• Manage existing partnerships whilst developing new ones
The successful individual will bring experience of leadership at a senior level; a deep knowledge of the children’s book world; experience of working in, or with the third sector; a successful fundraising track record and experience in education and child development. An understanding of empathy’s role in different settings, including the workplace is needed, plus strong evidence of building enduring partnerships. Experience of managing finances, staff, volunteers and programmes is essential.

Base - Hybrid home-location working. The postholder is required to attend our office in the Pears Building, Hampstead every Thursday and travel as needed to our locations in north London: Barnet Hospital (Barnet) or Chase Farm Hospital (Enfield) or Royal Free Hospital (Hampstead).

Job purpose
This is a pivotal role created to support an ambitious £80m fundraising appeal that will culminate in the creation of the new Royal Free London Cancer Centre.
The RFL, is one of the busiest cancer services in London, combining local care for a population of 2.5m with specialist services relied on by patients from all over the UK and beyond. By 2030, the number of people diagnosed with cancer in north central London is forecast to increase by 42% to 66,000 as the population ages.
The RFL urgently needs to increase its diagnostic, treatment, research and development capacity to meet the needs of our patients. In response, the Royal Free Charity is preparing a major fundraising appeal to support:
- the capital costs for the construction and equipping of a dedicated centre
- the delivery of cancer-related support services.
The campaign communications manager will support the activities of our fundraising directorate in the private phase (Autumn 2024 onwards) and the launch of the public phase of our appeal in early 2026.
The postholder will be responsible for developing and executing strategic communication plans to engage philanthropists, existing supporters, grateful patients, stakeholders and the public. It promises to be a varied and rewarding role in a small but highly collaborative and friendly team.
The role will report to our head of communications and work closely with the campaign director and colleagues in our fundraising directorate and with key clinical leads in the RFL.
The role is ideally suited to someone who is comfortable working across strategic planning and operational delivery, relishing the opportunity to translate plans into activity.
Engagement and communications department
The communications team is responsible for keeping our supporters and local residents informed about the difference we make to the patients and staff of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.
We celebrate achievements and promote the charity and its successes to the world. We manage our digital presence through a range of channels including our website, our social media platforms and email marketing.
The objectives of the post are to:
- develop and deliver the overarching communications and engagement plan for the cancer campaign
- work with the campaign director and colleagues in our fundraising directorate to support the development and delivery of donor-specific communication plans
- work with the campaign chair and campaign board members to promote the campaign in sectors where they are seeking to raise significant funds i.e. tech, finance, banking, media etc
- work with the campaign director and relevant agency to produce campaign materials and ensure the patient voice is represented in the appeal
- embed and champion the campaign brand to ensure consistency across all communications
- develop and maintain a campaign web presence, ensuring it is regularly updated with relevant content
- identify opportunities for thought leadership, including long-read articles and guest blog posts
- identify opportunities to update our supporters on progress
- share in the delivery of internal communications activity to ensure our staff and volunteers are well-informed ambassadors for the campaign
- share in the delivery of engagement activity with our online followers and supporters, responding in a timely and positive manner to comments and messages
- produce a wide range of communication materials including, but not limited to, reports, case studies, press releases and supporter information

About the role:
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated Grants Officer to join our dynamic organisation. During this maternity cover, Grants Officer will report directly to the Director of Grants, Contracts and Compliance. They will work across all of Internews’ geographies to provide the highest standard of grant management support to partners receiving higher value grants from us. The incumbent will have a unique opportunity to learn about Internews’ work and to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of our missions across the World.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Grant Management and Compliance
· Provide grant management support to Programme Management Units, country offices and partners. Participate in regional portfolio reviews.
· Support start‐ups of partner projects by coordinating project stakeholders and ensuring that all relevant processes and procedures are in place.
· Develop guidance documents and procedures to enable effective and compliant operation of partner projects. Supports project teams in adapting Internews’ standard sub-granting policies, procedures and toolkits to country contexts.
· Review and sign off on alldue‐diligence assessments in preparation for sub‐granting to partners.
· When requested, support project teams and the Business Officers, in monthly spend and burn rate reviews and donor report submissions
· Monitor the compliance from HQ to satisfy organisational and donorrequirements.
· Monitor the implementation of partner projects to ensure the implementation process is in line with grant agreements; and proposes solutions to implementation issues. Quality‐assure partner reporting, and track co-financing liabilities.
· Provide end-to-end management of partnership agreements, including drafting.
· Participate in project close-outs. Contribute to audit; support the audit manager on queries about sub-grants.
· Maintain records on the organisational grant management system.
Partnerships and Development
· Design and implement grant management and compliance trainings for partners and Internews staff.
· Identify and document best grant management practices from individual grants, works with M&E colleagues to coordinate debriefings with stakeholders.
· Advise development colleagues on key considerations relating to donor and statutory compliance requirements as related to sub-grants.
· Contribute to the development of partner budget proposals to ensure their appropriateness and compliance.
· Transfer grant-management expertise to country offices
· Support country office leadership teams to identify requirements and recruit grant management staff;
· Deliver trainings for key grant management staff in country offices and PMUs.
Expert advice
· Manage and develop the grants expertise at GC&C team ensuring the highest standards of grant management support to PMUs, country offices and regional and multi-country portfolios as required.
· Provide ongoing feedback to the Director of GC&C on required improvement and updates on donor regulations and contractual obligations to ensure organisational knowledge is built and improved continuously, with particular focus on the consistence and continuous improvement of sub-granting processes.
· Ensure good knowledge management across grants, including key project documentation, to enable all teams supporting the grant to access information and provide a fully auditable trail.
· Contribute to annual work planning and budgeting process.
Essential Skills and experience:
· Demonstrated experience in the context of international non-for-profit.
· Strong experience in the development and implementation of grant management processes and procedures.
· Deep understanding of rules of major European donors, including the European Commission, SIDA, and FCDO.
· Proven track record in conducting due diligence on organisations and their policies, ensuring compliance and alignment with standards.
· Proven track record in grant management training and mentorship for grantees.
· Comprehensive understanding of the setup, governance, and business models of non-for-profit organisations and media

As the Office Manager you will be responsible for managing the overall running of the Foodbank Office/building and administrative processes.
The postholder will do this by:

The first point of contact for clients and stakeholders on the Chichester District Foodbank main telephone or central email, dealing with initial enquiries and referring them to relevant member of staff when appropriate.

HR – manage the HR dashboard, Breathe HR, prompting managers to complete appraisals and regular one-to-ones, managing policies and supporting managers in the recruitment of staff using platforms such as ‘Indeed’.

CRM – main point of contact for Salesforce, creating templates and providing reports, prompting staff to keep contacts up-to-date, data cleaning etc.

Stewardship of regular and one-off donors, acknowledging receipt of donations, encouraging Gift Aid signup, and sending letters of thanks on behalf of the CEO.

Supporting the Operations Manager with volunteer recruitment admin where necessary.

Responsible for building management including liaising with utility suppliers and taking responsibility for health and safety in the Chichester District Foodbank offices and centre.

Responsible for equipment management, keeping an up-to-date asset list, liaising with suppliers and contractors, making sure all staff have equipment needed to complete their work i.e. phones systems, laptops, and mobile phones.

Responsible for procuring office supplies, including stamps.

Responsible for IT systems including Office 365 and Google drive, ensuring intellectual property is secure, staff have relevant access and corporate assets can be accessed by all.

Managing Chichester District Foodbank events, managing correspondence with event attendees, procuring event equipment and volunteers. Ensuring event information is communicated accurately and timely across all channels in collaboration with the Communications Officer.

Oversee community collections and collection boxes/buckets – making sure that we adhere to fundraising regulations and licences, counting, and banking money and thanking relevant organisations.

Manage organisational policy reviews and development.

Manage the Chichester District Foodbank office volunteers including the tech volunteer who provides IT support.

Responsible for creation and development of a Chichester District Foodbank archive.

Lead on data protection /GDPR.

Day-to-day you’ll be programming national events, workshops and networking opportunities; brokering progression opportunities though Youth Music’s industry partners, and recruiting to paid freelance creative roles. The job will involve managing a variety of relationships with young people, playing a central role in developing and leading the NextGen community strategy, and supporting the development of a new brand and user journey for NextGen community members.
Key responsibilities
Programme Development
- Act as the day-to-day lead and point of contact for the Youth Music NextGen Community, representing their voice internally and externally.
- Devise and implement a clear strategy for the continued growth and development of the NextGen Community, with support from the Engagement team.
- Deliver impactful programmes of activities and support that will progress young people into creative careers, broaden their networks, increase their confidence and create access to new opportunities.
- Develop and grow the NextGen Community brand and visual identity, ensuring a clear offer and user journey for those taking part in Youth Music funded projects, and other potential new members.
- Increase the role the community plays in designing and delivering the NextGen programme, aligning with Youth Music’s wider aims and values around youth voice.
- Increase interaction between NextGen Community members.
Events
- Work with the events team to develop, grow and manage our programme of regular NextGen Community events across the country to bring the community together and showcase their talent.
- Develop and manage our programme of events in London in partnership with Young Guns Network (YGN), taking place in the offices of our music industry partners.
- Grow attendance at all NextGen events, working with our Comms and Marketing team to increase awareness and build the profile of the event series.
- Programme and manage all events within set budgets.
Partnerships
- Build and leverage relationships with partners and networks to enhance the offer for the NextGen Community (such as events, performance opportunities, workshops, studio time, content creation, and exclusive offers etc).
- Manage relationships with key corporate partners (such as Levi’s) to support delivery of the NextGen Community activities.
- Build and maintain a pipeline of potential partners to approach, and support wider fundraising efforts within the team.
Recruitment
- Lead on NextGen recruitment for NextGen Community Events and the Youth Music Awards, with support from the Engagement Coordinator. e.g. Create briefs for NextGen roles and be their main point of contact.
- Support recruitment for any other Youth Music or partner opportunities created for the NextGen Community. (e.g. gigs, festivals, activations, focus groups, etc).
- Develop the NextGen talent pool, finding new ways to promote and manage this.
- Create and source relevant national music-related opportunities for Youth Music’s ‘opportunities board’.
NextGen Fund
- Support the marketing and promotion of the NextGen Fund.
- Contribute and support NextGen Fund decision panels.
- Work with our Comms team to ensure that content created through the NextGen Fund is showcased on Youth Music’s social and digital channels. E.g. Sound of the Next Generation playlist.
Demonstrate Impact
- Work with the Insights Team to listen and act on feedback from the NextGen Community. This will be via monitoring, research and consultation that informs the ongoing development and design of the NextGen offer.
- Prepare and present reports on the plans, activities and impact of NextGen Community.
- Share our learning internally and externally at panels, conferences, and through written pieces.
Systems and processes
- Capture NextGen membership on Salesforce so that we have a clear understanding of who is in our community.
- Work with the Database Administrator to improve our systems, processes and user journeys.
- Work with the Comms and Marketing team to ensure the Youth Music website represents and serves the needs of the NextGen Community.
Other
- Ensure all activities are delivered in line with Youth Music’s values with inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility at their core.
- Be a safeguarding champion, ensuring best practice Safeguarding is embedded throughout our work and all issues and concerns are escalated as appropriate.
- Represent NextGen at events or speaking opportunities and act as an ambassador for Youth Music.
- Ensure budgets are managed effectively, accurate records are kept and invoicing and payments are managed in a timely manner.
- Undertake other tasks that may be requested from time to time that may be consistent with the nature and scope of the role.
Person specification
Essential
- Experience in building and engaging communities in music, creativity or other youth-led spaces, platforms or organisations.
- Strong ability to build new relationships, engage with diverse creative communities, and foster meaningful connections.
- A passion for music and a strong understanding of the UK creative industries and current issues facing young creatives, coupled with a clear desire to create a more equitable industry for the next generation.
- Experience in developing, implementing and growing brands and programmes, particularly those that support young people.
- Experience of working directly with young people, including one-to-one and facilitating or leading groups.
- Proven track record of programming and managing events within budget constraints.
- Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver on KPIs.
- Experience working in a small, collaborative team environment, demonstrating efficiency and self-motivation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of representing Youth Music and the NextGen community internally and externally.
- Attention to detail and the ability to deal sensitively with confidential personal information.

Desirable
- Previous experience working in music, with artists, events, campaigns etc.
- Familiarity with charities and an understanding of how they operate within the music industries.

- Partnership development - experience in building and maintaining relationships with corporate partners and supporting fundraising efforts.
- Familiarity with Salesforce or similar CRM systems for managing community membership and engagement.
- Comfortable with public speaking and acting as an ambassador at events or conferences.

You will lead on managing our partnerships with charities and other organisations and help Martingale to grow major donor income streams by supporting the development of new and existing relationships. You will be responsible for identifying, researching and cultivating new potential funders, including contributing to their ongoing stewardship.
