The Public Engagement Officer position is a public-facing role, based in the IOP’s London building at 37 Caledonian Road, and therefore the role holder will be on-site in London when needed to deliver the role’s requirements, particularly. We welcome applicants from across the UK providing this in-person commitment can met, with the role holder being responsible for their commute costs.
The Role
What will I be doing? What is the purpose of this role?
- Ensuring that the IOP meets its strategic ambitions by engaging with diverse audiences around the UK and Ireland with a particular focus on communities around the IOP’s London building in Islington
- Supporting IOP Members and other volunteers to be relatable physics role models for young people
- Evaluating the IOP’s public engagement activities to ensure that our work reaches our priority audiences, are of high quality and achieve our desired strategic goals relating to Science, Skills and Society
Projects you work on will include:
- Supporting the design, development, delivery and evaluation of our annual public engagement programme, particularly the exhibition and events taking place in and around the IOP’s London building
- Managing the IOP’s Public Engagement Scheme, with responsibility for ensuring processing of grants, reporting on the scheme and supporting the review panel including analysing data.
- Engaging with primary schools in Islington and delivering a programme of events for young people, teachers and families
- Logistical support for the rest of the Public Engagement team and colleagues supporting our Members with resources and guidance to deliver public engagement activities on our behalf

Person specification:
Essential Criteria
- An undergraduate degree in the physical sciences or equivalent knowledge and confidence in physics to underpin the successful delivery of this role
- Professional experience in engaging families and young people with STEM and an understanding of how to tailor messages to different audiences
- A passion for inclusive public engagement practice and working with audiences currently under-represented in physics
- Excellent presentation skills, particularly for audiences of young people
- Excellent analytical and data handling skills for grant assessment, processing and evaluation of projects. Able to manage a variety of competing priorities and flexibly respond to new challenges and opportunities
- Competent user of MS Office (particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams)
- Knowledge of inclusive best practise in grant giving
Desirable Criteria
- Postgraduate degree in science communication
- Experience of managing grant giving and convening assessment panels
- Confidence in using a CRM to keep up-to-date records and manage relationships
- Experience of training volunteers to engage young people
- Marketing public engagement activities and knowledge of most effective channels to reach priority audiences

How will I be working?
The ’base’ location for this role is the IOP’s building at 37 Caledonian Road, near King’s Cross in London and regular attendance is needed to deliver the public engagement programme, especially during the summer period (June-September) when the peak of our activity takes place. At other times, depending on other commitments and the requirements of the role, the role holder has the flexibility to choose how they work under the IOP’s How We Work initiative.

You Must Have:

About the organisation:
The Grenfell 'Education Hub' will open later this year to serve those most affected by the Grenfell Tower tragedy. The hub will provide educational support to children and young people, their families, and local schools.
A consultation process in 2023 and 2024 about the needs of the community and the bereaved and survivors led to proposals for an educational ‘hub’. This will comprise a wide range of professionals including four specialist teachers, an Educational Psychologist, a Speech and Language Therapist, an Occupational Therapist, a Careers Coordinator, and a Family Support Worker. We are a very small, registered charity (number 1164078)
We provide counselling support, for children and young people who would not normally have access to the help they need by offering funded counselling to children and young people within 35 local, surrey-based schools on a bi termly basis. We usually provide a counsellor for a minimum of 3 hours per week per school. We have great relationships with all of the schools that we support, they will provide a private room for our therapists and their student. The day/time is usually decided at the convenience of the therapist.
Our school based therapists can also have the option of appearing on our website for anyone who would like to refer themselves to one of our counsellors and we also have the option to refer our part funded applicants to our therapist base.
We also offer some part funded counselling on a self-referral basis for those who do not have access within their school environment or for those above school age. We currently support approximately 45 children, young people and their caregivers on a weekly basis.
We are delighted that we are in the position to invite one or more fully qualified Counsellor/s to join our small passionate and perfectly formed team working in Surrey on a ‘self-employed basis’, initially for the summer term of 2025.
Role Description
You will provide at least 3 counselling sessions to 3 separate children and/or young people per week at one school during the summer term of 2025. We are recruiting for a number of therapists, so should you want to carry out more paid hours we can offer more, up to 6 per day for up to 5 days per week. These would be carried out in different schools for up to 11 weeks, depending on the individual school term. You would need your own transport to travel between schools.
Should our funding continue, we may be able to continue into the next school year. The school/s will be either based in and around Tadworth, or in and around the Byfleet/Woking area.

Job Overview;
The role will provide a high-quality, safe and confidential counselling service to pupils comprising of 1:1 clinical work with pupils at your designated school. You will be report into our clinical lead.

Key criteria required for the role;
Qualifications:
You will be a fully qualified Counsellor, Therapist or Educational/Clinical Psychologist with a Post-graduate level qualification in Counselling or Psychotherapy (ideally this would specialise in working with children (and adolescents)) however, experience of working with children in acceptable.
You will have BACP Accreditation, UKCP or BPC registration or registration with an equivalent recognised awarding body or working towards these registrations
• Further therapeutic training or qualification in working with children and young people
• Experience of working therapeutically with children post qualification is desirable, however, if you have experience of working with children in a different role, we are happy to support you in developing your skills.
• Demonstrate understanding of a range of therapeutic models
• An understanding of the developmental, emotional, social and educational issues of children and young people
• A clear understanding of child protection policy and procedures and commitment to safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults

Purpose of role

About the GOC
We are the regulator for the optical professions in the UK. Our purpose is to protect the public by promoting high standards of education, performance and conduct.
About the Hearings Panel
The Hearings Panel is a mix of lay (non-registrant) and registrant members with different backgrounds, skills, knowledge and experience from whom members of the Fitness to Practise Committee (FtPC) and our Registration Appeals Committee (RAC) are drawn, in accordance with our Committee Constitution Rules.
The FtPC considers whether a registrant’s fitness to practise is impaired and imposes sanctions if appropriate to do so. This includes considering allegations, hearing evidence and determining the fitness to practise of a registrant. This can include individual registered optometrists and dispensing opticians, the fitness of business registrants to carry on business as an optometrist or a dispensing optician or both; and the fitness of student registrants to undertake training as an optometrist or dispensing optician. You will be responsible for sitting as part of a FtPC, which will consist of either 3 or 5 members (a mix of lay and registrant members) drawn from the Hearings Panel.
You do not have to be a legally qualified individual or have specialist medical knowledge to participate in the FtPC process. We are looking for individuals who can contribute effectively and impartially, ensuring that all allegations are considered fairly and independently, maintaining standards for registrants and the protection of the public.
A FtPC can also determine whether it is necessary for interim measures (suspension or conditions) to be put in place whilst an investigation is in progress for the protection of the public or in the interests of a registrant.

Remuneration and time commitment

The role
1. Fundraising activity
Contribute to the development of the new fundraising strategy.
Research, identify and pursue fundraising opportunities that meet the Trust’s strategic objectives.
Lead one-on-one and small group meetings with Trustees and key supporters to identify, develop and deliver fundraising objectives.

- Manage the day-to-day financial operations including payroll, payments, controls and cash flow to ensure sound financial management and accuracy around all financial routines and procedures. Also ensure compliance and accurate reporting.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
The role works closely with the CEO and is assisted by the Assistant Finance Manager and the Bookkeeper.
Financial Planning
- Lead on financial planning, budgeting and forecasting.
- Conduct financial analysis to support decision-making, highlighting key trends, opportunities and risks. Also scenario planning and financial modelling for growth and sustainability.
- Provide sound financial advice to the CEO, Executive and Trustees also assisting with business planning and strategy and business development.
Financial Management
- Lead on and manage the annual financial audit, including preparation, responding to auditors queries and implementation of recommendations, effectively and in a timely manner. Also filling with the Charity Commission and Companies House.
- Lead on the day-to-day management of financial operations to ensure sound financial management and accuracy of all financial routines and procedures.
- Monitor performance of actuals in relation to budget, income generation targets, approved expenditure and in relation to forecast. Note, analyse and comment on variations and propose adjustments.
- Prepare quarterly management accounts and reports for decision-making and planning.
- Advise on and manage investments and cashflow.
Governance: Policies, procedures and financial controls
- Ensure compliance with all requirements and standards in respect to Insurance, Companies House, Charities Commission and HMRC.
- Proactively lead on process improvements as we grow. Includes writing, reviewing and updating finance procedures and policies, in collaboration with the CEO and Executive colleagues.
- Ensure governance documents are up to date. Including Trustees appointment and resignation records, conflict-of-interest forms, and relevant submissions to Companies House.
- Monitoring and mitigating financial risks while maintaining robust internal controls. Also manage credit control and ensure that payments are received on time.
- Ensure financial procedures, policies and reporting systems are updated as required and maintained thereafter.
Accounting
- Supervise and review accounting tasks and records processed by the bookkeeper and the Finance Manager.
- Ensure timely, up to date and accurate accounting practice including journal entries, accruals, phasing and reconciliation.
- Ensure accuracy of income and expenses allocation and coding, including deferred income and monthly reconciliations.
- Review and update coding structures and nominal coding, clearing accounts and reconciliations in collaboration with the CEO and finance colleagues.
Payments and Payroll
- Manage effectively payroll, tax and pension submissions, banking and associated procedures.
- Ensure all payments are made, received and acknowledged in an accurate, compliant and timely manner.
- Maintain up to date records of financial calculations regarding payments and fees for tutors, assessors and other stakeholders.
Contracts Management
- Ensure that operational, building, insurance and supplier contracts are up to date and renew them as required. Includes utility bills, IT and telephone.
- Prepare and issue employee contracts (working with the CEO/HR).
Support service delivery
- Calculate and prepare courses fees and other financial information for reviews and to support decision-making
- Liaise with students to offer and manage payment plans
- Ensure financial queries by colleagues, collaborators, students and practitioners are dealt with effectively and in a timely manner.
- Support the integration of financial and operational systems.
People Management
- Supervise, manage and support the Finance Manager and Bookkeeper, ensuring and supporting high performance and wellbeing.
- Recruitment, induction and professional development of the finance team. Also ensuring team members understand and adhere to organisational policies and procedures.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Qualifications and experience
- Qualified or part-qualified (final stage), for example ACA, ACMA, CIPFA, CIMA.
- Minimum 3 years relevant financial management experience working with a charity/not for profit.
- Good experience of sound accounting and financial management in the charity/not for profit sector. Good knowledge of charity accounting and the Charity SORP.
- Sound knowledge and experience of leading and managing the audit process.
- Thorough practical up-to-date understanding of management accounting principles and techniques.
- In-depth knowledge and experience with payroll and pension processes and management systems for accounting functions, including QuickBooks.
- Sound knowledge and experience providing monthly management accounts, year-end statutory accounts and financial reporting.
- Extensive experience of contributing to the strategic, organisational and financial planning processes and leading on budgeting and forecasting.
- Extensive experience in balancing competing complexities of a busy role and prioritising effectively, forward planning and working to tight deadlines.
- Sound experience working effectively with confidentiality and GDPR in mind and in line with organisational policies and practice.
- Good experience with organisational realities, challenges and opportunities in the charity sector.
- Experience of working well within a multidisciplinary team (desirable).
