Critical Values in the delivery of this role

• To assess, plan and develop the wider multi–disciplinary use of the Stud as a community garden and ecologically sustainable resource by using the value of sustainability.
• Work with the Service Development Manager to maximise the value of partnership and the opportunities on site guaranteeing its development as a social enterprise and local training resource for people with a range of disabilities and enduring mental health support needs.

Key Responsibilities for this role

• To support the Service Development Manager, Skills and Activities Coordinator, Support Staff and Volunteers in leading the development of the Stud Nursery as a viable social enterprise
• To ensure there is a weekly, monthly and seasonal horticulture plan in place (created in partnership with the Support Workers) which reflects the resources needed for client activities, product sales development and events
• To advise and support the Skills and Activities Coordinator in developing practical skills and/or qualification for people/groups using and supporting the sites development to encourage independence and empowerment
• To mentor and coach those using the sites services to lead and shape the sites programme of development as a sustainable community space and social enterprise.
• Work one Saturday per month, as agreed with the Service Development Manager, to open the nursery to volunteer project gardeners, and as a produce sale point to the local community
• In collaboration with the Skills and Activities Coordinator and Admin Support, to ensure all Health and Safety requirements are met, including site and individual risk assessments, and regularly reviewed to ensure a level of professionalism is being kept at all times
• To manage the Support Workers and Skills and Activities Coordinator, and support the charity’s drive toward values-based recruitment and leadership of its staff, volunteers and those using its services and to ensure staff recognition is held as a core value.

• On-boarding of new disability sessional staff including induction, role specific training, and on-going development to increase workforce retention.
• Work with the Volunteer Coordinator to expand the use of volunteers across Disability Services.

About the role:

We are looking for a driven, articulate professional with a passion for making a tangible difference in the lives of disabled children and young adults. This role is crucial in developing and implementing fundraising strategies to support our mission and ensure financial stability. This will include finding new funding opportunities as well as continuing to build our relationships with our regular donors. Key skills required for this role:

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in a fundraising role, donor relations, or a related field.
• Proven track record of successful fundraising and meeting financial targets.
• Experience of working with children preferred, although not essential.
• Strong organisational and project management skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in fundraising software and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

We are recruiting a Policy and Campaigns Manager to take forward our work on household debt. This role plays a key part in our campaign to end the UK’s household debt crisis.

Over ten million people in the UK are now ‘overindebted’, meaning they are behind on bills or are finding their debt repayments a heavy financial burden. The crisis has been growing over the last decade but has increased dramatically because of the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis. More and more people are now borrowing to cover bills and essentials.

Our campaign combines community organising with national level campaigning and advocacy work to bring the voices of those most affected by the debt crisis to the fore in debates on policy solutions. You will use your policy and campaigning expertise to help ensure the people most impacted by problem household debt have a say in influencing the policies that affect them. You will work on issues such as the growth in council tax debt and bailiff use, the huge build up in energy debt as a result of the cost of living crisis and making insolvency policy and practice fairer and more accessible so more people can get out of debt.

You will be a key member of our household debt project team, working alongside the Head of Campaigns, Head of Policy and Advocacy, Digital Campaigner and Lead  Organiser.

We are looking for someone with great policy analysis and advocacy skills, a strong campaigning mindset, and a passion for social justice. We are not expecting you to already be an expert in all aspects of the role or in household debt policy but are looking for someone with the potential to develop quickly. Crucially, you will also need to appreciate why taking a community organising approach and building the power of people affected by debt is important, though you do not need to have experience in community organising.

This role will require some evening and weekend working, though this will be infrequent.

evidence to support positive change, and empower citizens.

Role and Responsibilities:
Support from trusts and foundations is our main source of philanthropic income so we are looking
for somebody with experience in grants fundraising who can quickly apply their skills and
expertise. You’ll work closely with our Development Director to report to and liaise with current
funders, manage a pipeline of prospects and submit successful applications to secure new grants.
In addition, you will support in building a major donor programme to diversify and strengthen our
funding base. You will collaborate with colleagues at all levels across the organisation, from impact
producers to reporters to finance and operations, in a supportive and welcoming culture that
values teamwork and shared success.

As an excellent communicator, you will be able to take complex issues and translate them into
clear, compelling narratives that resonate with funders and stakeholders. You will also be

While experience in high-net-worth fundraising would be a valuable bonus, it is not essential. You
don’t need to have raised funds for non-profit media before, but you do need to be excited by our
work and able to express The Bureau’s key areas of work and impact in an accessible, accurate and
compelling way. We’re a small team, so you’ll need the willingness to pitch in on fundraising tasks
– big or small – to ensure The Bureau is in the best possible position to pursue its mission.

Skills and Experience:

• Excellent fundraiser with a demonstrable track record of 3+ years’ experience successfully raising significant funds for charities or non-profits and managing relationships with funders (foundations - essential, high net worth individuals - desirable);
• Strong background in managing grants admin, including due diligence and processing agreements;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, able to speak and write English fluently;
• Great analytical skills, with experience in researching and identifying new funding sources for various projects;
• Ability to work to tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities;
• Experience of working with databases and funding pipelines;
• Exceptional time management skills, a professional attitude, and meticulous attention to detail;
• Resourceful and able to think creatively with strong problem-solving skills;
• Strong interpersonal skills, able to collaborate at all levels across the organisation.
• Experience in securing funds for journalism, social justice, civil society, human rights, or related causes is desirable but not essential;
• We envisage this as a full-time, primarily hybrid working role, working from our London office two/three times a week.

About you

The team is looking for a talented individual to support our portfolio projects through excellent contract and finance management.  You will have knowledge of donor compliance and donor reporting and will provide integrated programme delivery, contract, and compliance expertise throughout the project cycle: from implementation plan set up to reporting and close out. You will have experience with managing multiple stakeholders across a single project. Your role will be central to achieving our three-year strategy, which is focused on:

Based in our Advocacy and Campaigns team the Senior Policy Officer will be responsible for delivering our Social Mobility Employer Index and support the development of our wider policy positions and campaigns work. 

Growing the influence and impact of the Index is a key strategic priority within ambition two, and this role will help achieve that by ensuring we continue to develop our knowledge and to influence and improve employer-led social mobility. You’ll be responsible for project managing and delivering core components of the Index including the marking, design and delivery of the survey, which we use to gather employer data and the feedback reports, which we share with entrants. You’ll ensure the documents evolve with best practice and in line with our work with young people. Working with others you’ll deliver the annual key findings report, ultimately helping improve employer led social mobility in the UK. 

Alongside the Index you’ll play a key role in developing policy positions for our political influencing campaigns. You’ll support our internal knowledge hub, drawing insights from our Aspiring Professionals Programme, wider research and focus groups with our young people and share external developments to ensure we have robust, youth-led positions. You’ll analyse evidence and help carve out our unique point of view on how we can improve social mobility in the UK.  

Key Responsibilities

• Lead on the project management and delivery of the Index including development of policy positions and best practice, questionnaire design, employer feedback reports. 
• Lead the annual review of the Index assessing the impact it’s had on driving employer behaviour and update our measurement and evaluation metrics accordingly. 
• Ensure documents are reviewed annually and updated to reflect the latest best practice and insights from our wider interventions.  
• Co-ordinate the different individuals and teams working across the Index to deliver the annual key findings report. 
• Utilising our political monitoring service and our relations with employers, stay across updates from key stakeholders such as the Social Mobility Commission, the wider sector and employer research, utilising these insights to update our policy positions and develop our advice to employers. 
• Undertake rapid scans of various types of data and evidence; produce summaries of the main findings and implications for policy and generate ideas for further policy opportunities. 
• Present findings internally and support fundraising colleagues with the insights, tools, and knowledge to develop new products that can influence employer behaviour.  
• Create resources for the wider organisation to ensure our evidence base and policy positions are understood, up to date and consistently used across teams.  
• Attend relevant conferences, stakeholder meetings and gather intelligence, raising our profile and influencing where appropriate.  
• Support the Campaigns Officer (media) and Campaigns Officer (public affairs) with the insights required for political and media interventions. E.g. briefing MPs and creating briefing materials for media interviews. 
• Administrative tasks as needed.  

Essential skills and experience

• Experience of developing policy positions for an organisation. 
• Experience in translating research into insights and using that to inform positions. 
• Experience of analysing and interpreting data sets to develop policy positions.  
• Excellent written and oral communication and influencing skills.  
• Experience of project management.  
• A problem-solving mindset - you assess the quality of your own ideas and ask questions about others’ ideas and proposals, devising solution options with costs/benefits and risks where appropriate. 
• You set high standards, actively seek and act on feedback and lead the team efforts to continuously improve. 
• You are outcome focused - You define your work in terms of outcomes rather than time spent and encourage others to do the same. 
• Planning and organising - You manage and work effectively with stakeholders to reach desired outcomes; you identify and escalate potential timeline issues in a timely manner proposing solutions. 

Desirable experience:  

• Experience of hosting focus groups and co-creating policy positions with young people.  
• Experience working in a policy role focused on social mobility. 
• Experience working in agile. 

Benefits

25 days holiday per year pro rata, plus bank holidays. 5% Employer contribution to pension calculated using NEST’s current thresholds for ‘qualifying earnings’ following successful probation period, in line with auto-enrolment pension requirements.

Main purposes of the job:
To facilitate therapeutic placements for people with learning disabilities, mental ill health and long-term health conditions, and complex needs using social and therapeutic horticulture principles, currently held on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

To involve the diverse local community of Hackney and neighbouring boroughs in activities at St Mary’s Secret Garden through participation in accredited training programmes, therapeutic groups, and volunteering activities with an emphasis on individuals and communities who may otherwise be excluded.

To use horticulture and other knowledge relating to growing and caring for plants, nature conservation, garden maintenance and landscaping to engage with people, encourage learning and promote health and wellbeing.

To promote the social care aspects of horticulture to community groups, local statutory services and individuals in the London borough of Hackney and beyond.

To work flexibly within our small team to support each other, to assist with the physical maintenance and general organisation of St Mary’s Secret Garden ensuring that the garden is open and accessible to the wider local community.
