Job Title: Head of Grants
Reports to: CEO
Salary: £45,000 - £47,000 pa (dependent on experience)
Location. Remote, home-based work and occasional attendance in Edinburgh office.
Contract. This will be a full-time, 35-hours post, but we may consider part-time arrangements to start with. Some flexibility will be required to attend events and meetings away from Edinburgh.
Responsibilities. Head of Grants will have the following responsibilities:
- Provide the lead for the Grants’ Department in the VF, managing relevant staff to best effect and shaping the Grant-Making Policy to suit the VF’s objects.
- Provide high quality policy, communications and strategic advice to the CEO and Trustees.
- Liaise with other organisations (eg Cobseo, AFCFT, OVA, other charities) to formulate policy and to enable smooth and effective operation of the VF’s Grant-Making Policy.
- Deliver the Grant-Making Policy approved by the Trustees.
- Suggest changes to the Grant-Making Policy to the Trustees when necessary, having identified impact and backed by research where possible.
- Ensure the quarterly and annual grant-making schedules are maintained, including arranging meetings and providing briefing packs for Trustees.
- Manage workloads to match staff employment contracts.
- Provide effective grant-making processes and identify improvements when necessary.
- Oversee the grant management aspects of Salesforce.
- Provide good coordination between the Grants Department and other departments in VF and with contractors.
- Promote the VF culture: cheerful, efficient and engaging effectiveness.
- Lead and manage the grants’ communications strategy.
- Overseeing the measurement of the impact of VF grants.
- Other duties and responsibilities as appropriate to the post and requested by the CEO.
Experience and Qualifications. Candidates should possess the following experiences, qualifications and skills:
Experience
- Proven experience and success in a relevant Third Sector grants’ management role.
- Good understanding and knowledge of the Armed Forces’ elements in the Third Sector.
- Experience of conducting due diligence into grantees.
- Understanding of business functions such as HR, finance and information security.
- Demonstrable competency in planning.
- Working knowledge of IT and comms systems, including Salesforces and MS 365.
- Excellent organisational and leadership abilities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Aptitude in decision-making and problem-solving.

About Us
The Veterans’ Foundation (VF) is an independent grant-making charitable foundation. It has established a substantial grants’ programme to support charities and organisations in the UK that provide charitable support to those in need among serving armed forces personnel, veterans, operationally qualified seafarers and their immediate families. The charity has grown rapidly since inception in July 2016 and has to date (Oct 24) given away more than £25M to good causes and handed out around £1.6M to good causes each quarter for the past year.
The VF supports a broad range of charities and organisations that deliver a wide variety of projects to members of the armed forces’ community including those that reduce homelessness, increase employment, provide welfare and medical support, increase confidence and social integration, as well as reducing dependence on alcohol and drugs. The VF gives priority to charities and organisations who can demonstrate that they are directly involved in the provision of support to those in need, and that are well-run organisations of low to medium wealth while also recognising innovation.
Since inception, income has come mainly from the Veterans’ Lottery, however, individual and corporate donations have grown significantly, and we now have staff focusing on this too.
The VF’s office is based in New Town in Edinburgh’s city centre. The VF’s staff consists of 13 employees: Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, 2 x staff in Finance, 3 x staff in Grants and 5 x staff in Fundraising. We now seek someone to fill a new post as Head of Grants.

This role supports the development, prioritisation and tracking of our global advocacy relationships, including delivering engagement with stakeholders in global institutions and multilateral spaces.
You will work with the Director to build – over the longer term - an overall approach to influence across our global network, including empowering our National Award Operators and Award Ambassadors as national advocates, and coordinating between their national influence and the Foundation’s engagement with global stakeholders and in global advocacy spaces.
You will lead the development of policy and advocacy briefings and materials, working with the Research and Insight team to ensure our briefings are informed by topical, robust evidence, and with Communications colleagues to bring our advocacy narrative to life across our communications.
You will plan impactful strategic country visits and engagement in multilateral spaces, working closely with stakeholders in the ‘Big 6’ youth organisations, National Award Operators and diplomatic contacts to plan targeted engagements that can help shift the dial on support for non-formal education and learning at a global and country level. You will lead on briefing for Foundation and country representatives to equip them as effective advocates around these engagements.
You will also actively support work to develop advocacy skills and programmes across the Award alumni community and National Award Operators, supporting the delivery of capacity-building training online and at global events.
Our long term ambition is that every eligible young person aged 14 – 24 will have the opportunity to participate in the Award.

The WRC is one of the world’s leading corporate accountability organizations. We support garment workers and their unions around the world who are fighting to end labor rights abuses and win better wages and conditions in the supply chains of major global brands. The WRC conducts investigations in factories in more than two dozen countries, documents and exposes labor rights violations, and pressures corporations to deliver concrete remedies to workers. And we pursue strategies to achieve systemic change: pressing global corporations to sign binding agreements with unions and end the pricing practices that compel their suppliers to pay poverty wages, subject workers to long hours of forced overtime, and ignore worker safety in order to slash costs.

The WRC is based in Washington, DC. We have 27 staff members located in the US, UK, Latin America, Asia, and Africa.
Senior Director of Development and Strategic Partnerships
The Senior Director of Development and Strategic Partnerships will lead fundraising, outreach, and engagement for the WRC at the level of both strategy and implementation. The WRC’s current annual budget is US$3.3 million, and we seek to grow this in line with our program strategy to roughly $5–6 million over the next two to three years.
Areas of responsibility include:
- Designing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising strategy to progressively increase annual revenue, including identifying, building relationships with, and securing new funding from foundations, other institutional funders, and individuals, as well as pursuing opportunities to expand relationships with current funders;
- Creating and implementing a framework for strategic external partnership communications, including working with the WRC’s global field team to convey the real-world impact of the WRC’s work and overseeing relevant enhancements to the WRC’s website and other communications pathways;
- Leading on grant writing and framing of external communications;
- Supporting the Executive Director and other colleagues to engage with, and ensure coherent messaging to, donors and other partners—including ensuring that the WRC participates in relevant conferences, convenings, and other discussions related to our organizational mission and objectives;
- Supervising the work of a second development professional who has day-to-day responsibility for grant management, grant reporting, implementation of sub-grantee/grantor arrangements, management of the organization’s small individual donor program, and who also assists with preparation of grant proposals;
- Monitoring progress on grant-funded projects through regular communication with program staff;
- Participating in the development of overall organizational strategy and aligning fundraising strategies accordingly; and
- Contributing to financial reporting and oversight.
This is a full-time position, available immediately. The position is hybrid for a successful candidate who resides in the Washington, DC-area or remote in the case of a candidate who resides elsewhere.
The WRC will consider candidates located within six hours of the US Eastern time zone. For international candidates and US candidates based outside of Washington, DC, the position requires periodic travel to Washington, DC, and possibly other countries in which the WRC works. The Senior Director of Development and Strategic Partnerships will report to the WRC’s Executive Director.
Qualifications
Candidates must have:
- A minimum of seven years’ experience in fundraising for nonprofit organizations and/or seven years’ combined experience with fundraising and strategic communications;
- A substantial track record of successfully cultivating institutional donors and proven experience in establishing new fundraising partnerships;
- Significant experience in communications and storytelling, with an ability to distill complex analysis and program work into communications that inspire and motivate our audiences;
- Exceptional written and oral communications skills;
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to initiate, build, and maintain working relationships with existing and potential grantors and a global team across numerous time zones;
- Strong budget management skills and experience delivering against financial targets;
- Excellent organizational and project management skills and rigorous attention to detail;
- Energy, enthusiasm, a strong work ethic, and a sense of humor; and
- A commitment to workers’ rights and corporate accountability.
The following are desirable but not required:
- Experience with labor rights work; and
- Experience working in an international context.
Compensation
Compensation for this position is $115,000–$135,000 per year, depending on relevant experience (adjusted to the local currency, where applicable). The WRC provides its US staff, who are covered by a union contract, with an excellent benefits package, including 100% employer-paid family health insurance, including dental and vision care, with an additional flexible spending plan with employer contribution; 401(k) retirement plan with employer contribution; and five weeks paid vacation.

What does successful Donor Development look like at Travalyst?
Managing Travalyst’s corporate and individual donor base and driving revenue growth through targeted fundraising efforts.
What you’ll get to do:
This role combines soliciting new prospect donors, donor management, partnership development, and data-driven campaign execution. The ideal candidate will be skilled in relationship building, fundraising strategy, and donor engagement, with a demonstrable passion for Travalyst’s mission of promoting sustainable travel and tourism.
Donor Management (~40%)
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with a portfolio of individual donors, corporate and institutional foundations to secure philanthropic and private funding and advance Travalyst’s mission.
- Identify, solicit, and nurture new donor prospects, ensuring continuous growth of the donor base.
- Strategise with senior leadership to retain and upgrade current donors, including personalised engagement for high-value supporters.
- Support high-value donor and corporate partner meetings, preparing personalised correspondence, proposals and briefs.
Fundraising Strategy, Campaigns, and Event Management (~30%)
- Collaborate with the Partnerships and Development team to plan, execute, and manage proposal development and annual appeal processes for fundraising campaigns, including donor and partner events, direct mail, and corporate initiatives.
- Conduct prospect research for individual donors, foundations, and international government funding sources.
- Oversee the project management and execution of partnership and donor events, ensuring seamless planning, logistics coordination, and delivery to meet revenue and engagement goals.
- Track and report progress on fundraising campaigns and events, providing analysis on key performance indicators and revenue projections.
- Work with the communications team to create compelling materials for donor outreach, event promotion, presentations, and corporate engagement.
- Secure grant funding through research, proposal development, and managing the grant application process.
Donation Administration and CRM Management (~20%)
- Manage the CRM system, ensuring donor and partner data is accurate, up-to-date, and effectively utilised for engagement and reporting.
- Partner with the Operations team to ensure all donations, invoices and tracking is completed in a timely manner with follow up to donors as required.
- Oversee donor reporting, generating data insights and analytics to inform future strategies and donor retention efforts.
- Manage reconciliation processes and ensure development data and financial data are in alignment.
- Collaborate with the team on CRM system training and improvements and support data migration if necessary.
General Administration and Team Support (~10%)
- Provide administrative support to the Partnerships and Development team, including scheduling meetings, managing calendars, and preparing materials for donor presentations.
- Assist with special projects and additional fundraising and partnership tasks as needed.

What skills we’re looking for:
· Experience in fundraising, donor management, or business development, with proven success in partnership building and substantial (ideally 6-7 figure) revenue generation.
· Ideally, Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Nonprofit Management, Business Development, Marketing, or related field.
· Superior communication and writing skills, with the ability to edit text written by others and generate new text; experience in crafting compelling pitches and proposals.
· High proficiency in CRM systems (Salesforce) and data management (experience with donor databases preferred).
· Strong organisational skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines and use project management software (Notion) to plan and track projects and work collaboratively across teams.
· Experience with grant management, writing and corporate engagement strategies.
· Experience with financial reporting and analysis in Excel/Google Suite.
· Strong understanding of sustainability issues, trends and the philanthropy sector, with a track record of aligning donor objectives with environmental and social responsibility.
· Experience working internationally and collaborating with people in diverse cultural and political contexts preferred.
· Ability to work independently and remotely in a dynamic and fast paced team environment.
· Strong alignment with Travalyst’s mission to promote sustainable travel and tourism.
· Ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with donors, corporate partners, and foundations, ensuring long-term engagement and revenue growth.

Fundraising is still a relatively new activity for DFN Project SEARCH and this role presents the opportunity to play a key part in its expansion to support the further growth of the charity and enable young adults with a learning disability to lead healthier, happier, and more independent lives.
