IRC-UK
IRC UK is part of the IRC global network, which has its global headquarters in New York. Our team in the UK works to raise profile, deliver policy and practice change, and increase funding to help restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Since 2021, IRC UK has also provided integration services directly to refugees in England, a programme that is rapidly growing. In Europe, the IRC also has offices in Berlin, Bonn, Brussels, Geneva and Stockholm.
EXTERNAL RELATIONS
The External Relations (ER) unit is comprised of four complementary functions: Private fundraising, Mobilization & Marketing, Policy & Advocacy and Operations & Analytics. To enable IRC to deliver our Strategy100 commitments, the ER unit established a bold new approach that enhances our ability to raise diverse and flexible funding aligned with IRC’s top priorities, while raising our profile and influence. The ER unit is international, with colleagues in more than 10 offices globally.
The Purpose of the Role
As Director of Communications, UK, you lead IRC UK’s core communications strategy with the objectives of growing our profile, influencing policy, driving income, and protecting our reputation. This is done by taking a strategic approach to generating effective messaging for cross-team use, creatively collaborating to produce cut-through external products across media and digital channels, and generating top tier media coverage in collaboration with communications, advocacy and fundraising colleagues globally. In this role you will be expected to use expert judgment to manage IRC UK’s reputation, as well as ensure media and digital outputs protect beneficiaries, staff and programming from harm.
The Director will report to the UK Executive Director and the Senior Director of Global Public Affairs. The Director will collaborate closely with the Senior Director for Digital Engagement, UK Advocacy Director, and the Director of UK Mass Markets to meet the organization’s strategic objectives surrounding profile, income and influence.
Scope and Authority
Authority:
· The role holder sets strategic direction for UK communications, with a focus on earned media, public advocacy and organic digital.
· The role oversees the UK comms operational budget, with access to the Global External Relations budget.
· The role has the authority to brief journalists with agreed messaging and act as spokesperson for the organisation.
· The Director will line manage the communications team and other positions when required.
· The role is a key member of the UK Senior Management Team, with collective responsibility for the leadership, culture and efficacy of IRC UK.
Key Working Relationships
· Reports to the UK Executive Director and Senior Director Global Public Affairs & Communications.
· Close collaboration with External Relations staff in the UK, US and globally, including Advocacy and Influence, Mass Markets, Fundraising, Awards Management, Digital Engagement, Entertainment Relations, Creative Studio, and Experiential Marketing.
· Works closely with key country directors, country programme staff and technical unit colleagues.
· Supports policy staff in the IRC President’s Office on key UK messages and policy initiatives involving the IRC President.
· Works closely with counterparts in NGOs and donors particularly FCDO and the DEC.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Strategic Direction
· Raise IRC UK's profile, income, influence and brand in the UK market by developing and delivering a 360 comprehensive communications strategy that reaches target audiences, attracts new supporters, and connects supporters with IRC clients.
· Partner with global external relations leadership to set Key Performance Indicators for achieving the strategy, and drive and monitor progress towards them with the support of your team.
· Contribute to the development and delivery of the UK Strategic Plan.
Team Management & Stakeholder engagement
· Manage a team of communications professionals, setting objectives, portfolio scope, and partnering on professional development opportunities
· Drive creative insights and strategic thinking within the UK comms team and influence / maximize policy, advocacy and fundraising outputs and results
· Lead strategic communications planning to maximize opportunities of partnering with income and influence objectives and outputs
· Ensure the UK Communications Team are clear on systems, processes and organization to drive efficiency and team productivity
· Review team performance quarterly and present on results to global stakeholders
· As a member of the UK Senior Management Team (UK SMT) support the UK Executive Director in the creation and delivery of IRC UK strategies and priorities, foster cohesion and collaboration among UK based departments, representing the needs and objectives of the team in the UK SMT and UK office.
Execution: Driving IRC profile, influence and income; and protecting the reputation of the IRC
· Work alongside global communications colleagues, Policy & Advocacy colleagues and UK Fundraisers to develop appropriate messaging on key proactive and reactive issue areas across the scope of IRC’s work.
· Plan and identify key moments of opportunity for IRC UK Communications according to internal and external landscape and timetables.
· Ensure pro/reactive message accuracy and cut through calls to action that engage audiences for proactive campaigns and news cycle opportunities.
· Develop, commission and drive creative cut-through tactics and products, from revealing IRC research and analysis to emergency media briefings.
· Secure top tier media coverage of IRC’s work, solutions and innovation, balancing mentions with long-form/features and profiles.
· Influence and shape key media narratives around priority IRC UK policy issues.
· Oversee strategic media opportunities by commissioning, writing, editing and disseminating messaging for multi-channel use, press-releases, op-eds, statements and other content to secure coverage of the IRC in the UK across print, broadcast and online media.
· Work with global communications colleagues and country office staff to create strong, persuasive and impactful outputs, and to arrange interviews and media visits to frontline work.
· Act as a spokesperson for the organization in the media as needed.
· Liaise closely with Fundraising teams to collaborate on timely messaging, client-centered storytelling, digital outputs, and media coverage to bring in donations to the IRC during emergencies and other fundraising appeals.
· Manage the communications component and IRC UK’s relationship with the DEC and lead communications on DEC appeals.
· Use expert judgment to ensure the IRC is protected in the media and to develop and enact strategies to protect IRC’s reputation, as well as ensure media outputs protect beneficiaries, staff and programming from harm.
· Ensure coordinated and topical messaging across media outreach and digital channels.
· Establish close relationships with press counterparts within statutory donor organizations that lead to opportunities to promote IRC in the media.
· Leverage IRC’s President and CEO, and UK Executive Director to grow our profile in the UK, through proposing and implementing op-eds, interviews and other media activities.
· Support, prepare and coach staff, spokespeople and board members for media interviews and visits; and provide guidance across the organisation to dealing with media.
· Build expertise on current and potential issues in the humanitarian NGO arena via research and monitoring of national media and competitors and in liaison with global colleagues
· Work with the global media colleagues to ensure that IRC has a system for managing media enquiries at all times, as needed.
· Responsible for reporting to the IRCUK board, subcommittees and Executive Director on press activity, trends and upcoming opportunities.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
Experience
· Track record in creating, driving and evaluating a 360-degree communications strategy that focuses on media, digital and enabling income.
· Experience leading and managing media and digital teams.
· Experience navigating and influencing within large matrixed organizations.
· Extensive experience of developing key messages and implementing media strategies with an international, and ideally humanitarian, or development focus.
· Experience of conducting media relations and communications opportunities in developing countries and sensitive contexts.
· Experience of organising international media visits to projects in order to facilitate reporting on key issues.
· Substantial experience responding to reputational threats.
· Experience leading a digital communications team that delivers breakthrough digital content, client-centered storytelling and brings in new supporters.
· Experience/knowledge of tools for monitoring media coverage and digital results.
· Experience of dealing with media enquiries into crisis and sensitive issues.
· Experience of acting as a spokesperson for an organisation.
Skills and Knowledge

Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday. This vacancy could be filled by a candidate looking for a full-time opportunity or by two candidates looking to work part-time, as per Crisis’ Flexible Working Policy. Location: Crisis Skylight London, 50 – 52 Commercial Street, E1 6LT will be the main base for the role but it will include travel to Christmas centres and hotels in London for specific activities and at different times of the year. About the role
We are excited to offer this new role which is an opportunity to support our two London Crisis at Christmas teams. There is the Crisis at Christmas team who lead on the set up and delivery of our hotel and day centre delivery in the capital. This is a huge and innovation operation, supporting hundreds of people out of rough sleeping. It also involves huge numbers of volunteers. The postholder will be working alongside the Crisis at Christmas team and Christmas Case Management Team to develop this post. You will form part of the local Leadership team, supporting the implementation of Psychologically Informed Environments (PIEs). You will support the delivery of our work to members by offering training and leading reflective practice for staff and providing direct services to members at times. You will be working alongside the Christmas team to plan how we ensure our service offer is psychologically and trauma informed as well as developing and delivering training for volunteers and staff and supporting the delivery of our services. You will be joining a part-time Psychologist working into the Christmas Case Management team, as well as several Psychologists who are also based in the London Skylight.
You will also be a part of a national psychology team made up of a Lead Clinical Psychologist, two Regional Lead Clinical Psychologists, and seven Practitioner Psychologists as well as one Assistant Psychologist and Trainee Clinical Psychologists on placements.

The Worker Support Centre (WSC) is a Scotland based charity that promotes decent work and prevents exploitation. We support marginalised and isolated workers in labour sectors where there is a high risk of abuse and exploitation. We work in partnership with workers to build power to secure and advance workplace rights. We prevent human trafficking for forced labour by acting to reduce the risks of worker exploitation. WSC values include: respect for human rights, representation, transparency, equality and innovation.
WSC support includes advice, mediation, advocacy and assisted reporting to enforcement agencies. Our worker engagement informs policy change activity to address harms faced by those in high-risk work. In 2023 and 2024 WSC activities were targeted at workers in seasonal agriculture on the UK Seasonal Worker visa (SWV). During this time, we provided advice, support, and information to 1031 people in relation to the SWV. WSC is now embarking on a new project to engage workers in health and social care to advance social care workers’ rights through worker education and power sessions.
About the role
This role is focused on advancing seasonal agricultural and social care workers’ rights by supporting WSC’s policy and advocacy work. In this role you will support WSC meet two of its four core objectives to work together with workers to claim spaces for power and representation in decision making; and to build the field of knowledge about workers and their experiences to influence policy. As well as work delivered directly by WSC, our policy work includes coordinating with coalitions such as the Ethical Trading Initiative, the Seasonal Worker Interest Group and the Scottish Food Coalition.
WSC strives to achieve representation of individuals with lived experience of the issues on which we work at all levels of our organisation and actively promote applications from individuals with experience of the issues on which we work.
Main tasks and responsibilities
Policy and advocacy
· Lead in the development of components of policy, ensuring engagement of workers and cross-organisational engagement.
· Identify emerging legislation and develop an influencing strategy.
· Lead key influencing moments and processes, working in collaboration with policy coalitions of which WSC is part.
· Draft worker-informed and evidenced briefings, submissions to consultations in support of worker policy priorities and engage closely with civil servants, Government officials and other decision makers on policy objectives.
· Support participatory engagement with workers to understand what democratic engagement platforms might best suit them and help create opportunities to influence processes.
· Track, assess, understand and respond to future legislative developments and the strategic direction being taken by UK Government, UK Parliament, Scottish Parliament and Scottish Government.
Stakeholder engagement
· Develop and maintain strong working relationships with senior stakeholders in Government, enforcement authorities and industry.
· Contribute to wider sectoral networks and groups, including attending meetings and setting joint policy strategy objectives.
· Provide high-quality support to the CEO and other senior staff with external stakeholder engagement, developing targeted briefings.
Participation
· Support WSC Peer Engagement Officers to conduct participatory workshops with workers to understand their concerns and to develop and articulate collective concerns through influencing strategies.
· Support participatory analysis workshops with workers to jointly analyse concerns articulated in order to establish standards workers would like to see upheld for seasonal workers.
· Support the review and documentation of barriers to democratic engagement for seasonal agricultural workers and migrant social carers.
· Actively support workers to engage in advocacy, including by providing worker-centred briefings on advocacy processes and meetings, ensuring meaningful participation and leadership by workers.
· Support workers to create spaces for policy influence, engaging in actively listening to worker priorities and concerns.
General
· Support the whole organisation goal to integrate workers in all our work at all levels of the organisation.

Administrative support for regular medical missions
- Support the coordination of MAP’s regular Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) which provide medical support to health facilities in the region.

You will work for the Methodist Church as part of the ecumenical Joint Public Issues Team, which helps the partner Churches (Baptist, Methodist and United Reformed Church), plus our associate partners, to work together for peace and justice. We do this through listening, learning, praying, speaking and acting on public policy issues.
The Campaigns and Church Engagement Officer will help church members across Britain to be part of this this work through developing campaigns on issues such as poverty, refugees and the climate, by enabling churches to develop positive and purposeful relationships with their MPs through the Constituency Action Network, and through producing effective and creative communications and resources.

THE ROLE: The Director is responsible for the overall running of Maa Shanti. This includes supporting and managing staff, developing strategy, operational management, contract management, service development, training, consultancy, partnership working, safeguarding and child protection, HR, recruitment, finance, fundraising, marketing and social media. Some of these activities (e.g. fundraising and social media) are delegated to staff members with guidance and direction from the Director. The Director is supported by a committed board of trustees, and communicates and reports to the board regularly.
THE COMPANY: Maa Shanti supports South Asian mothers who are impacted by domestic abuse. Our aim is to reduce isolation, and increase confidence, knowledge and skills for our services users. We do this by improving access to activities, education and employment and through the provision of advocacy and support (both in person and remotely). We run a busy programme of events, workshops and events which includes e.g. yoga, mindfulness, cooking, vocabulary groups, arts and crafts, excursions and children’s activities during school holidays. The charity was founded in Islington as a grassroots
organisation in 2004 and has grown in strength and size in the last 20 years. We currently have 6 members of staff working for the charity.
WHO CAN APPLY: The successful candidate will be creative, committed, organised and have an understanding of the issues facing our service users. They will have experience in leading an NGO/charity, managing staff and volunteers, fundraising, stakeholder and funder management, service development, charity administration, infrastructure and compliance, working with a board of trustees and working with vulnerable women and children. Since 2018, Connect: North Korea (CNK) has grown from a small community start-up into an effective and impactful organisation with an annual income of approaching £500,000, mainly through grants from Trusts and Foundations. We now want to develop our individual giving programme to build our unrestricted income and secure our long term growth.
As our new Individual Giving Officer, you will play an exciting role in growing income from our individual and corporate base to help us reach more vulnerable members of our community. You will lead on individual fundraising relationships and initiatives, including appeals, fundraising campaigns, and all direct marketing activities and communications. You will position us in our supporters’ minds and encourage them to actively support CNK in 2025 and beyond.

Primary duties and responsibilities will be:
Planning:

Use online analytics, social media insights and other metrics to report on progress, capture learning, refine, improve and grow our income from individual givers.
Communications and Individual Giving:

Work with CNK team members to gather information, case studies, quotes and images and convert into compelling and engaging content for social media and our website. ‘

Regularly update our website and social media platforms with insights, opinions, case studies, calls to action, to build our community of supporters

Use social media platforms to build brand awareness and drive traffic to our website

Engage with fiscal sponsor to support income from US funding sources

Plan and deliver innovative well thought out funding campaigns to convert existing supporters from once off donations to regular givers, nurture and steward donors to increase the value or frequency of their current donations

Inspire our mailing list subscribers to give to us for the first time with the aim of increasing our new donor pool by 15% in 2025

Report monthly on individual giving progress, income raised, number of new supporters/followers, conversion rates, offering insight on ROI, learnings and incorporate this learning to improve how we do things in future.
Fundraising compliance:

Save all profiles, donations, giving history, gift aid agreements, correspondence, and communications with supporters on CNK CRM database. Uphold GDPR and comply with fundraising best practice.
Staff & Volunteer Management

Create and manage volunteers to gather case studies, compile research, develop content for social media and organise events with an eye to increasing awareness and income for CNK.
The role has no direct line reports at present but there may be in future, along with the prospect of promotion, budget permitting
Essential skills and experience:
You will have at least three, and ideally five, years experience of:

individual giving fundraising for a small charity, with a track record of developing and delivering successful individual giving campaigns that have generated 4 to 5 figure sums

building a community of followers and converting them into donors

gathering information, case studies, data and finances, distilling and crafting high quality, well articulated compelling funding asks

growing charity brand and positioning, thorough consistent approach, campaigns, asks,use of language and artwork

digital marketing including social media, email marketing, and website content management

designing tools, inputting data and keeping CRM software updated, using data analytics to report on donor journey and drive fundraising decisions
