Chapter One is a dynamic, growing charity with a vision of a world in which all children have the literacy skills needed to thrive. Our mission is to close the reading gap by providing children with one-to-one support at the time they need it most. We work in eleven areas/regions of the UK and will support 3250 children in 2024-25.

Our unique Online Reading Volunteer programme pairs struggling five to seven-year old (KS1) readers with reading support volunteers who are working professionals. The volunteer ask is very focused: readers commit 30 minutes a week to read with a child using a bespoke digital platform for an entire academic year. The results are transformative, boosting children's reading confidence and ability.

From a school perspective, online reading volunteers provide direct, meaningful literacy support for up to 10 pupils per class. The programme is particularly suitable for communities where it might be challenging to find parents and other volunteers who can commit to physically visiting schools to boost reading.

Job Summary

Chapter One is seeking a Manchester Programme Manager who is an excellent communicator and is able both to motivate and support schools and teachers to implement our online reading volunteers programme, and also to ensure that the programme’s impact and benefit to children facing disadvantage communities is maximised throughout the academic year.

The post is ideal for someone looking for part-time, flexible, term-time only work from a home base, but who is also able to travel frequently around the Greater Manchester area to visit schools.The postholder will be joining a team of established Programme Managers (also part-time) who work in different parts of the UK and will need to have some flexibility to work additional hours during busy autumn months, and conversely to work fewer hours during quieter periods of the year.

Key Responsibilities:

• Effectively explain Chapter One’s online reading volunteer programme and its benefits to school leaders and teachers

• Install, setup and maintain Chapter One equipment in participating classrooms

• Fully understand the operation of the Chapter One platform and database and communicate this to others

• Organise and conduct initial teacher training and follow-up

• Ensure a smooth initial launch of Chapter One’s programme in every classroom

• Liaise with colleagues performing technical and volunteer support roles

• Through regular visits to/contact with schools, provide on-going embedded professional learning and support to teachers throughout the year as needed

• Proactively monitor classroom adherence/fidelity to the Chapter One model, including systematic review of data reports and volunteer feedback, taking proactive action to resolve problems that arise

• Analyse and manipulate data (largely in Google sheets) to produce reports and identify trends

• Create regular data summaries for all participating classrooms

• Lead annual review meetings for senior leadership at participating schools

• Support programme monitoring, evaluation and research as required

• Coordinate in person and virtual school ‘visits’ of volunteer teams to classrooms where necessary. This may include opportunities for Chapter One children to visit the office of the volunteers.

• Liaison with corporate partners as required

• Weekly communication and status updates with Senior Programme Manager(s) and wider team

• As a new school year approaches, secure commitments from returning schools and find and target new schools to join Chapter One’s programme

Role Requirements:

Post Award Manager

£40,000-£46,000 per annum (dependent on skills and experience) plus generous benefits

Location – Remote, but with regular visits to Foundation funded sites within a defined region, as well as visits to the Foundation office as determined by business needs, including attendance at quarterly Squad Meet-Ups

The salary band for this role is £40,000 - £46,000 per annum, dependent on relevant skills and experience.

You will start with 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays (which increases after 2 years), plus additional time off to volunteer. As Local Volunteering Attraction Coordinator, you'll play a key role in promoting volunteering and driving new volunteer applications to support and grow our services. This role focusses on raising funds for Bowel Research UKs medical research projects and work that focuses on patient and public involvement. Funds raised will be a mix of restricted project funding and unrestricted funds that can support the organisations core operations.

The organisation has assessed the trusts' function recently, the outcome of which shows that there is scope to significantly grow this area of activity. Full support will be given to the Trust Fundraising Manager to enable this growth to happen.

You will be a motivated self-starter able to write, budget and communicate effectively. You will develop relationships with ease and feel able to positively influence colleagues at all levels of an organisation. The position requires someone with a positive attitude who is determined and resilient.

The Head of High Value Fundraising is responsible for delivering and significantly growing income from Corporate Partnerships, Philanthropy and Trusts and Grants. Leading a team of committed fundraisers, you will develop a robust strategy that delivers mutually beneficial partnerships, outstanding supporter relationships and long-term sustainable income.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES  

Specific Duties 

Leadership

• To lead and inspire the high value team fostering a collaborative and high culture that delivers against income and objectives
• Provide clear and supportive leadership that motivates staff to achieve, develop and grow in their roles
• Undertake quarterly reviews for all direct reports

High Value Fundraising

• Cultivate and maintain relationships with high-value donors, ensuring effective solicitation, stewardship, and follow-up to secure significant contributions (six-figure gifts)
• Build and maintain a portfolio of Trust & Grants supporters. Responsible for researching, approaching and developing compelling applications with a focus on ensuring Trusts & Grants provide a long-term, diverse and sustainable income stream
• Lead the development and stewardship of the Philanthropy board to identify and secure transformational (6-7 figure) gifts and the development of the Business development Board to open opportunities with Corporate Partners
• Write and design a compelling case for support that is tailored to our High Value audiences
• Build a portfolio of corporate partners, including securing high-value, multi-year partnerships. You will work with the team to grow this income stream from prospecting, approaches, applications, pitches, stewardship and providing excellent account management
• Lead on planning and delivering successful high value cultivation events

Strategy, Planning and reporting

• To create and implement a strategy including corporate partnerships, trusts & foundations and major donors
• Lead on developing and delivering effective stewardship journeys and cultivation plans
• Produce regular reports on fundraising activity, analysing performance against targets, and identifying areas for improvement and growth.

• A proven track record in high-value fundraising, including securing 6-7 figure donations from high-net-worth individuals, trusts, foundations, and businesses
• Track record of converting cold prospects to planned gifts of 6-7 figures
• Demonstratable strong strategic planning skills and the ability to develop and implement long-term strategies to achieve fundraising targets and enhance the charity's mission
• Proven leadership and people management skills, with experience in overseeing multi-disciplinary teams. Essential experience includes team leadership, staff motivation, setting clear objectives, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
• Experience in effectively developing, managing and reporting complex income and expenditure budgets
• Exceptional communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence at senior levels and excellent written skills
• Experience of successfully engaging trustees and/or senior volunteer committees to drive philanthropic income.
• Excellent relationship-building and stakeholder management skills
• Strong networking skills with the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders

As Local Volunteering Attraction Coordinator, you'll play a key role in promoting volunteering and driving new volunteer applications to support and grow our services. Working flexibly and independently, you'll engage with local communities, build relationships with organisations, and use a range of marketing and outreach activities to encourage people to get involved. You'll need to be adaptable, self-motivated, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a wider team, using technology to stay connected.

You'll develop and implement strategic recruitment plans, using a mix of social media, local media, community events, and partnerships to identify potential volunteers. Representing Guide Dogs at events and fairs, you'll raise awareness of our work and inspire people to take the next step in their volunteering journey. Planning and hosting events will be a key part of the role, ensuring that engagement is maximised, and recruitment targets are met.

Collaboration will be essential as you’ll be working closely with Communications colleagues to ensure best value from advertising partnerships and presence on Guide Dogs’ digital channels. You'll also work with internal teams to align recruitment efforts with local and national volunteer targets, supporting regional campaigns and monitoring performance to continuously improve recruitment effectiveness.

To be successful in this role, you'll need experience in volunteer recruitment, community outreach, marketing, or related fields, with a strong ability to engage and inspire others. You'll be confident in delivering marketing campaigns, creating engaging advertising materials, and using data to track and improve recruitment strategies. A degree or formal qualifications in marketing or volunteering would be beneficial, but not essential.

This is a part-time home-based role, working 28 hours per week, with regular travel across Bristol and Somerset and down through Devon & Cornwall.  You’ll need to demonstrate a proactive, flexible approach and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends to attend key events. The closest office is Bristol.  In this role, you can make a tangible impact in growing an engaged and passionate volunteer community.

About the role

We seek an experienced Business Development Manager to drive our UK growth and expand our client and partner base. Reporting directly to the CEO, (initially) you will lead our sales strategy targeting UK businesses, with a particular focus on small and medium businesses, and public sector organisations.

About you

You are a commercially minded, results-driven and action-oriented business development professional with 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in B2B sales and income generation within the leadership development, coaching, and mentoring and skill building/training sectors. Skilled in securing new business, developing growth strategies and building long-term client relationships, you leverage your established network of HR/talent leaders and Managing Directors in UK businesses, with a particular focus on small and medium businesses, and/or public sector to enable consistent revenue growth.

We are looking working with a social welfare charity to recruit a Grants Commissioning Manager (Scotland). In this senior management role working as part of the Grants team you will ensure that the funds are awarded in accordance with the Charities Values and Outcomes Framework.

The role will work strategically with The Director of Relationships and Funding to support and deliver the charities funding plans for Scotland and support the Head of Commissioned Grants with all elements of the commissioning cycle.
