ABOUT THE SUPPORT MENTOR ROLE
This is an exciting new opportunity as we expand our services in the Luton area with a new service! We are looking for a dedicated team to deliver person centred and bespoke trauma informed support to vulnerable women in Luton. This new service will provide a safe, secure, and nurturing environment for women facing sexual exploitation and substance dependency – a place they can truly call home. Through stable, person-centred care, you'll play a vital role in empowering women to rebuild their lives and embrace brighter futures.
The service will engage with women who are sexually exploited and are facing homelessness due to multiple forms of exclusion, such as historical or ongoing abuse, involvement in the criminal justice system, mental health challenges, drug and/or alcohol dependency and who are engaging in survival sex or sex work, enduring high levels of violence and coercion. These are women who often find themselves repeatedly going through the accommodation pathway and have exhausted all other available options.
We are looking for passionate and dedicated Support Mentors on a 3 year FTC to join our team and play a vital role in empowering individuals to rebuild their lives. As a Support Mentor, you will provide high-quality, trauma-informed care and support to people within our services, focusing on their recovery, rehabilitation, and personal development.
Shift Pattern: 37.5 hours per week. Shift patterns to be confirmed but may include Monday to Sunday working including evenings and bank holidays, this will be on a rota basis in a face to face service.

What are we looking for from a Support Mentor?

- Ability and willingness to show flexibility of working patterns, responding to the needs of the service and residents
- Ability to promote the service and provide outreach-based provision, with an ability to liaise and work effectively in partnership with stakeholders

About the role
Your role will be to work with people with mental health concerns who are looking to create sustainable lives in their communities by improving engagement with services, so they can sustain their wellbeing and avoid reoffending.
Engaging with clients on the ward and within the community, your main focus will be supporting them with their transition away from staying on the ward to living in the community. Your own experiences will be invaluable as you engage with and motivate them to set goals around their recovery.
You will need to be able to build relationships and trust, understanding the importance of empowering people to make their own choices. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to access personal support to develop new skills and improve your self-confidence to do the job.

About you
We are looking for people who have had mental health issues, are ex-offenders or who have been through the criminal justice system. If you also have Lived Experience of homelessness and substance use this is useful but not essential. You will need to have accessed support services, have an understanding of how these experiences have affected you and be able to draw on them to identify gaps in services, barriers to recovery and suggest how things can be improved. You will need to have been stable for at least 18 months and be willing to share details of your successful journey with others to help them. You will be looking to go into a career supporting vulnerable adults and this will be a great opportunity to gain experience. Basic computer skills will be needed, as well as the interest and motivation to develop and learn new skills.

About the Peer Mentor Service
We are delivering a Peer Mentor Service, working in partnership with the Forensic Intensive Recovery Support Team (FIRST) within Birmingham and Solihull’s Mental Health Foundation Trust. The service is a comprehensive service and focusses on recovery. The team are multi-disciplinary and work to address the individual needs of our service users through tailored care packages. You will be working alongside Consultant Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Community Psychiatric Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Support Time Recovery Workers, Substance Use Workers and Social Workers. Each person using the service has an allocated Care Coordinator and Responsible Clinician who monitor and review their care and support needs and interventions.
The Peer Mentor service’s aim is to help people with multiple and complex needs to enhance the support available through the FIRST Pathway and improve their ability to manage independently as part of their transition and life in the community.

The service will work in collaboration with multiple services and partners, to embrace a flexible, strengths based approach, displaying tolerance, recognition and understanding the impact trauma can have on behaviour.

We are looking for Relief bank Support Mentors to work with a passionate and committed team focused on delivering essential support and safe accommodation to sexually exploited women in Luton who suffer extreme levels of violence, coercion and trauma.
You will support and empower our residents and participants to maintain their health and wellbeing, to be part of the wider community and help them to lead more fulfilling lives. You will be involved in organising and delivering stimulating and engaging groups and activities across our sites to address the challenges faced by our residents and participants, to support them on their journey towards independent living.
We will be holding a recruitment day for this service on the 14th of January 2024 in Luton. (This is a Women's Service and we will not be accepting applications from men).
ABOUT THE SERVICE
The service will consist of 11 self-contained flats, plus one sit-up space for women in crisis and private space for keywork sessions. The accommodation has been designed to offer women their own homes, behind a protected front door. This model is delivered locally in mixed units and has shown that people with a range of needs can thrive in this type of accommodation.
The service will embrace a flexible approach, displaying tolerance, recognition and understanding the impact trauma can have on behaviour. The service will remain conscious of the societal tendency to unconsciously exhibit bias against women, whereby behaviours considered acceptable from males are often deemed unacceptable for females due to ingrained gender stereotypes. Sexually exploited women will not be expected to change to fit into a service model, rather the service model is designed to support women with high levels of trauma and a complex array of support needs and behaviours.
The service will provide tailored support on an individual basis, adopting an intensive, strengths based, person-centered approach in collaboration with multiple services and partners as required. The service will work with each client on a co-produced, comprehensive support plan where the priorities are set by the client.
