ABOUT YOU
We're seeking a versatile professional capable of delivering high-quality work across a diverse range of tasks in high-stakes contexts. Strong and even ideal candidates will meet many (but not necessarily all) of the criteria below. We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet all of the listed characteristics. In the past, we've offered positions to applicants who demonstrated strong overall potential, providing training to address skill gaps. We prioritise high general ability, a strong work ethic, and alignment with our values, methods, and approach to maximising global impact over specific prior work experience or backgrounds. We sketch a picture of potential ideal candidates to give a more concrete sense of what particularly strong candidates might look like, not to discourage interested applicants.
A strong candidate is:
-

-
Ideal - prior experience in people-facing roles like advising, consulting, or management

-
-
A skilled facilitator: Able to create and communicate content in engaging and effective ways. Notices when a participant is less engaged and bring them into the conversation, while able to smoothly direct conversations towards topics that are the most productive for the group and is confident interrupting people when needed.

-
-
An altruistic team player: Enjoys collaborative project work and is adept at both giving and receiving constructive feedback. AIM and our programs and funding circles are all cooperative environments that place impartial impact above individual success.
-
Ideal - proven motivation to work in philanthropic, non-profit, or social domains, i.e., prior work or engagement with spaces aimed at improving the world
-
-
Willingness to work in person from London (visa sponsorship and moving costs support provided)

We are open to discussing specific personalised perks or benefits that may enhance your work experience
APPLICATION PROCESS
Our application processes aim to be highly predictive, time-effective, and informative for you. Our process consists only of stages that our best evidence suggests are predictive of success on the job (such as test tasks) rather than more common but less predictive stages (such as cover letters). We only invite candidates to the next stage if we think they have a good chance of passing it, and take care to choose tasks and interview questions that will also give you a good sense of the role and our culture.
Applicants will be asked to complete the following stages:
-
Submitting our general application form (30 minutes to 1 hour),
-
A general test task (2-3 hours) with the top 10 to 30 candidates,
-
An initial interview (15 minutes) with the top 10-20 candidates,
-
A test task simulating the work you would do in your role (2-3 hours) with the top 5-15 candidates,
-
A final, more in-depth interview (~60 minutes) with the final 2-5 candidates.
We will also conduct a reference check before making an offer. Each stage typically takes 1-2 weeks from the end of the application deadline, and we hope to make an offer within ~8 weeks of the application deadline. Ideally, the candidate will begin onboarding as soon as possible after an offer is made. We strongly prefer candidates to join the team by January 2025, but we would consider a different date for an ideal candidate.
We help you find and transition to a high-impact career with comprehensive support, removing barriers and accelerating your journey to maximize good.

Who are Guts UK Charity?
People are suffering. People are dying. All because of a lack of knowledge about our guts.
Guts UK is the only charity that covers all of the digestive system, from ‘top to tail’ covering the gut, the liver and the pancreas. Guts UK works actively and collaboratively with other charities. However, with our own limited resources, we choose to focus particularly on the conditions that have no other specific charity or voice - those illnesses that really are underserved such as pancreatitis, diverticular disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), childhood gut and liver disease and digestive cancers.
Our vision is a world where digestive disorders are better understood, better treated and everyone who lives with one gets the support that they need.
Overall Purpose of the Head of Research
- To lead the delivery of the charity’s strategic research aims including managing and further developing Guts UK’s grants programme, managing our small research team, working with research partners and networks to raise awareness of our work and outcomes, further develop impact, and continue to develop and embed patient and public involvement (PPI) in our research.
- To drive new initiatives and develop and deliver tactical plans for the Research team which meet our strategic objectives.
- As a member of the charity’s senior leadership team, to contribute to the leadership, planning and delivery of strategic initiatives and the wider development of the charity.
Who we’re looking for?
As a small but growing national charity, we punch above our weight including our research programme where we invest directly and in partnership with other organisations. We are looking for an experienced healthcare research manager who is looking to take their next career step including a move to senior leadership role. With the support of our CEO, SLT, and the Board Research Strategy Committee, you will take ownership of this portfolio, further develop and successfully delivery research strategy, and develop our research investment and impact.
We currently have a small Research team, so while this role requires strategic thinking and leadership, similar to charities of our size you will need to be someone who relishes multi-tasking and isn’t afraid to roll their sleeves up to things done. In the long term we are targeting significant growth in our research portfolio, and therefore our team, and so the role will develop and evolve.
So, if you know the medical research landscape, are experienced in research grants management, enjoy working with others and building professional partnerships, have a passion for patient voices and don’t mind getting stuck in – this role could be just what you’re looking for.
Location
We have offices in London and Huddersfield which are easily accessible by road orpublic transport. We support hybrid working but attendance in one of the offices [dependent on your location] is required on an average of 2 days per week. If you are interested in the role but have queries about office-base requirements, please contactus to discuss.
Please see the attached detail job pack for further information and how to apply.

Background to the role
AUKEL recruited a new Chief Executive in April 2023, and a new chair in February 2024. In March 2024 we published an ambitious five year strategy which sets out how we want to increase the extent we meet the needs of older people in East London. We have a number of organisational transformation objectives which underpin the strategy; these are things we need to do to strengthen our foundations (following a period of rapid growth) and equip us to deliver safe effective services, at scale, across our footprint.
We are looking for someone to join our team to work with the Service Director to lead the transformation of our Hospital and Home services. These:
- Currently are provided at four hospitals broadly covering four boroughs: Homerton (Hackney), Newham (Newham), The Royal London (Tower Hamlets), Whipps Cross (Waltham Forest). And are staffed by 16 AUKEL employees – three co-ordinators, two project officers, 10 support workers, and an administrator.
- Homerton and The Royal London are jointly commissioned until end March 2029. Newham has been extended to the end of June 2026. Whipps Cross is due to be re-procured, with a short extension under consideration, we aim to jointly bid for this with our neighbouring AUKs.
- Assist vulnerable adults in getting home from hospital, carrying out safety checks in the home, give advice on practical and wellbeing matters, and visiting regularly for a period of four to six weeks after discharge
- Are commissioned based on meeting pre-agreed targets for the number of referrals accepted, and are fully embedded into the hospital discharge system.
- Typically include provision of handyperson services, which is operationally delivered separately by three handypeople.
- Include our (paid for) Home and Care service which is delivered separately to our hospital discharge services, and currently supports c. 40 individuals.
This will be a challenging and rewarding role; you’ll need experience of change management and of leading operations. You will be resilient and will have values which align with ours: Kind, Accountable, Collaborative, Flexible and Inclusive. This is a chance to join our team at an exciting time; we’ll expect a great deal of you but in return you’ll be well supported, invested-in and given lots of opportunity to learn and grow as an organisational leader.
We’re particularly hoping to recruit someone from the global majority as our leadership team doesn’t currently adequately represent the communities we serve.

About us
Women and Girls Network (WGN) was established in 1987 and has spent over 30 years supporting women and girls across London affected by gendered violence. This includes childhood sexual abuse, domestic violence, rape, prostitution (including trafficking and sexual exploitation), female genital mutilation (FGM), and so-called ‘honour’ based crimes such as forced marriage.
Our goal is to promote, preserve, and restore the mental health and wellbeing of women and girls, to empower them to make a total and sustainable recovery from the experiences of violence. VAWG crimes, which include domestic abuse, rape, sexual assault, stalking, and harassment, accounted for 20% of total police recorded crime in England and Wales between 2022 and 2023.
