We’re looking for an experienced Commercial Director, preferably with experience in training or education, to take our income-generating training and events programmes to the next level and develop new products and services that meet the needs of our growing membership and wider community.
The annual RSS conference is going from strength to strength, and our training programme is particularly popular with organisations who want to provide high quality bespoke training for their staff. With the growth in the analysis and visualisation of data across business and industry and the increasing popularity of careers across sectors in statistics, data science and AI, you will also work with wider RSS and our expert members to identify gaps in the market and design new ways to meet needs while also providing a return for the Society that we can invest in our charitable activities.

The Director of Commercial has responsibilities for setting the strategic direction of our commercial activities, developing new products and services to enable growth, and ensuring that our plans and activities are aligned with our charitable purpose and strategic objectives. They work across the society to ensure that opportunities are effectively marketed and support colleagues to generate the budgeted revenue.
Job purpose
To lead the RSS’s commercial activities and develop new products and services that meet the needs of our growing membership and wider community.
Key responsibilities
Understanding needs and the changing external environment
- Develop understanding of the preferences and needs of statisticians and data professionals, and others interested in data and statistics, at an individual and organisational level, to evolve our products and services and align our commercial activities to those preferences and needs
- Undertake research to identify new target markets for commercial products and services
- Undertake research to understand competitors and benchmark RSS products and services
- Monitor and respond to developments and emerging trends in charities, membership organisations and other learned societies, and in statistics/data science/AI to ensure that our commercial offerings remain timely and relevant
- Provide robust analysis of client behaviours and feedback to inform future planning.
Development of strategies and plans
- Drawing input from across the organisation, develop strategies for sales and marketing across commercial products and services that support the organisation’s objectives, including training and conferences and events
- Oversee staff responsible for business development to capitalise on opportunities
- Lead the creation and delivery of fully-costed and resourced business plans for commercial products and services that align with key strategic goals
- Devise partnership models for different sectors

Programme management and delivery
- Deliver programmes of commercial products and services which meet the needs of target markets including training, advertising, sponsorship and venue hire
- Monitor and report on progress and performance against targets and plans
- Manage projects, including establishment of new products and services, ensuring that work is delivered to time and quality
- Work with colleagues to identify and develop sponsorship opportunities, and support colleagues in sales meetings with potential sponsors

Regulatory and compliance
- Act as a Director of RSS (Services) Limited, overseeing its governance and ensuring compliance with relevant rules and legislation.
Training
- Develop the portfolio of training courses, creating and launching new courses in response to user needs
- Expand the training programme by targeting both statisticians and data professionals and non-professionals and widening our geographic reach
- Establish and manage effective systems and processes to develop and deliver all training products, including identifying new training topics and trainers (with input from our statistical membership community)
- Ensure high standards of quality and customer service by evaluating feedback and managing the quality assurance process
- Ensure the effective promotion and marketing of training courses.
Conferences and events
- Oversee the development and operation of the RSS conferences and events programme
- Lead the conference and events team in the delivery of RSS conferences and events.
Interfaces with other teams and groups
- Convene and lead cross-RSS groups to develop, share and review plans and activities and identify opportunities for synergy and collaboration
- Work with heads-of and other teams across the organisation to support related objectives
- Ensure effective working relationships are maintained and contractual requirements are met with our trainers, partners, assessors etc. including developing and agreeing terms & conditions (including intellectual property agreements and contracts) with clients
- Identify relevant experts within the RSS membership and engage them in programmes, formalising a network of volunteers and providing support and advice
- Collaborate with RSS volunteers, staff and external providers to ensure the delivery of projects and outputs to agreed deadlines
- Select, lead and manage contractors and third party organisations to support programme deliverables.

Working for the RSS
Pension and benefits
Our defined contribution pension scheme can be joined after three months in post. Your contributions of up to 8% of salary will be double matched by the Society (making a maximum contribution by the Society of 16%). A training budget, season ticket loan, cycle to work scheme and employee assistance programme are also available.
Location
The RSS office is in central London. We offer flexible working arrangements, and this is a hybrid role with on average two days a week working in the office. In person attendance for certain meetings is required (including all staff/team meetings and governance/committee meetings that take place in person). Limited travel within the UK and internationally may be required.
Working hours

Holidays
25 days per annum, plus bank holidays and an additional shut down between Christmas and New Year.

The Ukraine Humanitarian appeal raised £439 million and helped an estimated 6.9 million people in Ukraine and neighbouring countries. The Grants Manager is integral in working closely with DEC colleagues and member charities to build and sustain, a solid understanding of the evolving humanitarian context. The Grants Manager will also lead on oversight of the DEC Ukraine programme including the reporting cycle, adaptive programming and facilitate strong and relevant engagement with DEC member charities and local partners as well as external briefings over the duration of the response.
Key responsibilities:
Communication and Collaboration

Key programmes point of contact regarding the DEC funded programme, responding to enquiries from member charity programmes and other related staff, facilitating timely and accurate communication.

AMF profile
Against Malaria Foundation (AMF) was founded in 2004 and is a charity that fights malaria in a highly effective, accountable and transparent way.
We do this by purchasing and distributing multiple millions of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) at a time in nationwide universal coverage campaigns. This is the most cost effective way of preventing malaria. AMF receives donations from the public and in the current financial year to date have received over US$125m. AMF is particularly data-focused and monitors and reports on net use and drives and supports innovation to improve the effectiveness of malaria programmes.
AMF is the world’s third largest funder of nets.
AMF has been rated a top charity for all of the last 16 years by independent charity evaluators GiveWell and The Life You Can Save who focus on cost-effectiveness and impact.
We are a team of thirteen highly motivated individuals with different skills and experience. Each person has an important role to play. All team members work remotely with constant communication between them. While the team is small, the impact is big - our net distributions protect millions of people. Our largest programme is in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where we are funding 55 million nets to protect 100 million people for distribution during 2024 to 2026. We have ongoing multi-million net programmes in other countries including Chad, Guinea, Nigeria, Togo, Uganda and Zambia.
Role Description
Our activities and commitments are steadily increasing, and 2025 and 2026 will be particularly busy years of distributions, with over ~100m nets planned for distribution. In light of this, AMF is recruiting a Senior Operations Manager to join the operations team and play an important role in ensuring the success of the net distributions. We are looking for someone who has strong interpersonal and intellectual skills who is able to work collaboratively. The ideal candidate will be comfortable taking on significant responsibility by leading on several of AMF’s programmes.
The role will include involvement in all stages of a distribution campaign (pre-agreement, net procurement, post-agreement, during distribution, and post distribution) across two main areas:
- Work with National Malaria Control Programmes (NMCPs)
- Work with AMF’s independent monitoring partners
Further information
The Senior Operations Manager will lead on several of AMF’s programmes. They will work closely with NMCPs, in country partners, AMF independent monitors, the AMF Operations and Technology teams to ensure the success of AMF distributions.
More specifically, they will manage the distributions through the following stages:
1 - Pre agreement
- Establishing the funding gap
- Establishing the net need, malaria burden, insecticide resistance data
- Working with the Ministry of Health to negotiate and put in place an agreement for the programme
2 - Net procurement
- Working with AMF’s procurement lead to order nets in time for the distribution
3 - Post-agreement
- After signature of the agreement, working with countries to put in place the plans for key elements, in particular: electronic data collection, 5% re-visits, net tracking
- Tender for and select an independent partner for distribution monitoring, and work closely with this partner that will be AMF’s eyes and ears in country
4 - During the distribution
- Track information coming from monitoring partners
- Analyse with the Head of Analytics registration and distribution data and take actions if needed
- Account for all AMF nets
5 - Post distribution
- Tender for and select an independent partner for post distribution monitoring, and work closely with this partner to carry out surveys at 9, 18 and 27 months post-distribution
- Share results with in-country partners and encourage appropriate actions to be taken
Through these stages, it will be important to maintain strong relationships with the key partners, notably the National Malaria Control Programmes, distribution partners and cofounding partners to ensure that distributions are carried out according to the agreements signed between the Ministry of Health and AMF.
These relationships will ensure that solutions can be found constructively to issues that arise during implementation of AMF’s programmes. Aside from the areas above, there will be other work related to AMF Group Operations, dependent on the candidate’s skill set.
Characteristics of the successful candidate
We are looking for someone who has strong interpersonal and intellectual skills, who works collaboratively in a team and relishes responsibility and the opportunity to learn and develop their abilities. The ideal candidate will be motivated to help improve the lives of those affected by the wider impacts of malaria.

Fight Bladder Cancer is a UK-based bladder cancer charity founded and run by bladder cancer patients and their families / carers.
