We are recruiting a Policy and Campaigns Manager to take forward our work on household debt. This role plays a key part in our campaign to end the UK’s household debt crisis.
Over ten million people in the UK are now ‘overindebted’, meaning they are behind on bills or are finding their debt repayments a heavy financial burden. The crisis has been growing over the last decade but has increased dramatically because of the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis. More and more people are now borrowing to cover bills and essentials.
Our campaign combines community organising with national level campaigning and advocacy work to bring the voices of those most affected by the debt crisis to the fore in debates on policy solutions. You will use your policy and campaigning expertise to help ensure the people most impacted by problem household debt have a say in influencing the policies that affect them. You will work on issues such as the growth in council tax debt and bailiff use, the huge build up in energy debt as a result of the cost of living crisis and making insolvency policy and practice fairer and more accessible so more people can get out of debt.
You will be a key member of our household debt project team, working alongside the Head of Campaigns, Head of Policy and Advocacy, Digital Campaigner and Lead Organiser.
We are looking for someone with great policy analysis and advocacy skills, a strong campaigning mindset, and a passion for social justice. We are not expecting you to already be an expert in all aspects of the role or in household debt policy but are looking for someone with the potential to develop quickly. Crucially, you will also need to appreciate why taking a community organising approach and building the power of people affected by debt is important, though you do not need to have experience in community organising.
This role will require some evening and weekend working, though this will be infrequent.
We strongly value diversity and welcome applications from people from all backgrounds. We would particularly like to encourage applications from women and non-binary people, people of colour, people who identify as LGTBQIA+ and people who identify as working class or have done in the past. If you have a question about location or any other aspect of the role, please do get in touch.

SWEDA is growing fast. Since the pandemic, the number of children, young people and adults who need our support has grown exponentially. An estimated 1.25m people in the UK have an eating disorder, and an NHS mental health questionnaire in 2023 found that 59.4% of 17-19 year olds ‘screened positive’ for having eating problems.
We have responded by expanding geographically (into Bristol and South Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire), developing our children and young people’s services and investing in the development of a fundraising team. Our Head of Fundraising has been in post for just over a year and our Fundraising & Communications Officer joined in January 2024. Now we need a Fundraising Manager to help us develop and grow our community fundraising to diversify our income and secure SWEDA’s future. We are a small and friendly team and will make you feel very welcome.
Your role will be to help us devise and deliver community and individual fundraising campaigns, secure and cultivate corporate partnerships and forge relationships with schools and other community partners. You will be comfortable trying new things and in being adaptable; we want to scale our public fundraising activity and are applying a ‘test and learn’ approach. The primary objective will be to raise funds to support our life transforming work, but also to raise awareness and understanding of eating disorders, and help establish SWEDA as the eating disorder specialist across the South & West.
We are looking for a candidate who has the necessary skills and experience to fulfil the following role:
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan, lead and deliver on income generation plans for individuals (including regular giving and appeals), community and corporate fundraising to grow SWEDA’s income year on year.
- Forge and cultivate relationships with supporters – individuals and businesses – in person, on the phone and through SWEDA’s communications channels.
- Maintain a clear focus on acquisition across community, corporate and individuals, with dedicated time for proactive prospect research.
- Monitor, evaluate and report against agreed performance indicators
- Work collaboratively with the Head of Fundraising and other team members to maximise income generation opportunities
- Develop a network of volunteers to support cost effective and successful public fundraising activity.
- Drive innovation to improve fundraising practice, increase ROI and test new approaches to raise money.
- Use data insight to drive decision making and improve performance.
- Plan and implement an effective stewardship plan which prioritises personalised long term relationships.
- Effectively use the CRM to record and manage your work, capture donor information/consents and support strategic planning.
- This is a new role, so your main duties and responsibilities may change. You can help to shape it!

Our members (charities and social enterprises, think tanks, businesses and foundations, youth organisations, unions, universities and schools) are working collectively to create an inclusive system.
Why we need you
Effective communications are crucial if we are to achieve our vision, and we need our digital communications to take centre stage. This is an exciting new role for someone who has experience in digital communications and marketing and wants to play a significant part in a small but influential organisation.
In 2024 we are redefining our Communications Strategy, and you’ll be at the heart of this change. Working with our Head of Communications and work area leads, you will manage and develop our digital channels to reach key audiences, drive engagement with our member organisations, and increase public awareness of educational inequality. You will have a creative and engaging approach to content creation, working closely with the Secretariat and Alliance members.
If you are a digital communications all-rounder, then this role is for you. In a typical day you could be speaking to our Youth Steering Group, creating content to support the launch of our latest report, building our email newsletter, or developing social media strategy to engage key policy influencers.
You will be equally at home managing day-to-day tasks, creating compelling content, and shaping strategy. You will be able to balance a data-informed approach with an instinct for good content.
What we’re asking of you
Leading the delivery of our brand and communications across all digital channels
- Create and deliver content across our social media channels that engages our audiences so we can achieve our objectives.
- Champion our members and their activities, involving members in content creation and digital campaigns.
- Work with area leads to develop and deliver organic and paid digital marketing campaigns and activities.
- Ensure our website is regularly updated with relevant and timely content.
- Manage our regular email newsletters, including our weekly Member Bulletin. Compile content, schedule contributors and build email campaigns.
Supporting development and delivery of communications strategy
- Support the Head of Communications and Senior Leadership Team to develop a sustainable, effective communications strategy.
- Develop channel strategies to grow audiences and increase engagement.
- Ensure digital communications activity is well planned, with clear objectives and metrics, in line with our communications strategy.
- Establish clear ways of working and guidelines, where appropriate, and ensure best practice is followed by staff and contributors.
Managing and monitoring our digital channels
- Monitor our social media channels, identifying opportunities and risks. Where appropriate, escalate risks to Head of Communications and agree mitigation.
- Regularly respond to comments and posts on our social media channels
- Ensure channel analytics are recorded and analysed, and learnings applied. Provide data and analysis for quarterly board reports, as well as monthly communications briefings.
- Monitor search engine performance and look for opportunities to create SEO-friendly content.
