Advocacy Jobs
This is a new and strategically important position in a small but mighty team. Our advocacy - the use of information and evidence to drive change in policy, practices and attitudes - and the effective engagement of target audiences to stimulate action, are at the core of our success in forging a fairer water future. To scale our positive impact, Water Witness is therefore strengthening its capabilities through the creation of this key position. The post holder will be responsible for high impact advocacy and engagement to deliver our 2030 Strategy and will work with the team and partners to ensure: rigorous stakeholder, landscape and political economy analyses; collation, synthesis and packaging of evidence; and development of clear strategic priorities, change objectives, advocacy messages, targets, and tactics. They will be responsible for coordinating, overseeing and leading the delivery of our advocacy, including through creating and presenting content and authoritative reports, organisation of events and cultivation and management of relationships and partnerships. They will ensure that we learn and adapt, and can attribute the impact of our advocacy.
As a senior member of the Public and Political Engagement team, the Advocacy and Engagement Manager will work closely with our Research and Operations teams, and partners across Africa, Asia and South America. They will engage with decision makers in government, business, financial institutions, multi-lateral and network organisations, local and international NGOs, and the media to advance evidence-based solutions to the conjoined global crises of water, climate, nature and inequality. In particular, they will play a key role in our Fair Water Footprints Campaign and the wider delivery of the Glasgow COP 26 Declaration. With new funding from the UK Government’s Just Transitions for Water Security Programme, these game changing initiatives seek to end the abuse of water in our supply chains, and to establish responsible water stewardship as the global business norm by 2030 so that trade and business accelerate, rather than undermine, shared water security. This will be achieved through mobilising the power of scientific evidence and citizen voices to trigger change in government policies, corporate practices, financial disclosure, and political and public expectations. The choreography and delivery of this change will be a core focus of the successful candidate’s work.
We are keen for the post holder to be based at Water Witness’s Edinburgh offices where they will help to mentor and nurture the next generation of water leaders, though some flexibility may be considered. This role will involve travel within the UK and internationally. It would suit an exceptional communicator who is fluent in the technical and policy aspects of water and climate justice, and who has several years of demonstrable experience in using advocacy, communications, and stakeholder engagement to drive change. If you’re a team player that shares our passion for our mission, with proven political nous, and the ability to translate complex evidence into the right asks to the right people at the right time to secure systemic change, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Middlesex University marries radical creativity with practice-oriented education, on a beautiful open campus right in the heart of North London. Our second campus, at Stone X stadium, is just a 5 minute bus ride away. We enjoy a strong relationship with the University, who understand the unique role the SU has to play in their vision - to transform students’ outcomes to change their lives.
Our community is a melting pot of the local and the global, with students encouraged by the University’s industry focus, excellent teaching standards and fantastic location.
For September 2024, we have just established a students’ union space in MDX House, the home of student life on campus. Our Head of Engagement and Influence will lead the charge to harness mass engagement from our students in extra and intracurricular opportunities so that they can develop the skills, networks and communities to influence their education and shape their futures.
Leading a directorate of 9 full time staff, and supporting three full time student officers as well as 100s of student leaders, you will help staff and students develop communities and campaigns approaches that ensure students are shaping their education, their communities and their lives. The successful candidate will have excellent coaching and mentoring skills and be able to put them to use to develop staff and our full time officers, growing and developing their teams to reach new heights. You will have the skills to build systems, processes and projects to ensure that students have excellent support and opportunities, with the ability to lead the team to achieve our vision for Engagement and Influence.
We are looking for someone who will go the extra mile for students, who is passionate and committed to the impact MDXSU can have on our students’ futures. You’ll be a great communicator, a team player and relish the opportunity to work directly with students every day.
Due to our new Progression Framework, the successful postholder will get the opportunity to develop significantly throughout their time with MDXSU. You will be supported to take on challenging projects and opportunities that directly contribute to the skills you need for the rest of your career, including access to a free MBA or equivalent masters’ level qualification with paid study time. Through quarterly reviews, and a structured progression plan, the most successful candidates could move from the entry point of the band to the top of the pay scale in as little as 18 months.
Like all SU staff, the Head of Engagement and Influence also shares responsibility for supporting the work of our elected student officers and delivering against key projects, such as welcome week activity, SU elections and feeding into the wider work of the SU and the university.
Both the Students’ Union and the University are going through a period of ambitious change, making MDXSU an exciting place to work, with a fun and sociable staff team. This role is ideal for someone who is ambitious and interested in the opportunity to experiment and lead new practice. You could be looking for your first senior management role in students’ unions after a successful period in people and project management, or you might be a senior leader in a smaller organisation looking to grow your experience. We also actively welcome applications from people looking to move into students’ unions from aligned sectors, such as youth work and community development.

Who we are
We’ve been on the frontline of the world’s response to HIV and AIDS for over 25 years, working with marginalised people who are denied HIV prevention and treatment simply because of who they are and where they live.
Set up in 1993 to work with community groups in the countries most affected by the global AIDS epidemic, we’ve continually adapted our approach, looking for innovative ways to break down the barriers that marginalise people living with, or at risk of acquiring, HIV. All with one goal in mind – a future free from AIDS for everyone, everywhere.
Everything we do is rooted in our two key beliefs:
- That the lives of all human beings are of equal value.
- That everyone has the right to access the HIV information and services they need for a healthy life.Today, we work with communities in more than 40 countries, taking local, national and global action on HIV, health and human rights.
As a global partnership that is open to everyone, we can only do what we do – and achieve what we want to achieve by working with partners from grassroots community groups to national governments. Our partners drive change where it matters, shaking up the status quo and making a noise on issues the world often chooses to ignore.
Are you the Candidate we’re looking for?
You are an experienced communications professional, with a proven track record of delivering effective corporate communications projects spanning brand, publications and creative content. A communications all-rounder, with a strong editorial background and a keen eye for detail, you will play an active role in delivering our communications strategy, finding new and impactful ways to engage our target audiences and inspire them to act. You are proactive and collaborative, with demonstrable experience of end-to-end project management, and are confident providing strategic advice and counsel to colleagues at all levels of an organisation, including senior leaders.

Our bereavement services are provided for free, completely confidentially, to anyone who needs us. Often via telephone or email support, though we also have a thriving and complex Casework Service, helping bereaved navigate the inquest or investigation into their loved one’s death.
This new position will provide first-hand support to the existing team of 3, learning from their experiences and expertise about how we support people bereaved by epilepsy, and how this way of working influences the work we do across the charity.
You’ll be learning the ropes from day 1, getting stuck in with any tasks needed to help support the Bereavement Services team – this could range from admin tasks, answering initial enquiries from bereaved supporters (via phone or email), and will eventually lead to you taking initial calls with bereaved supporters, sharing with them the different ways the charity can support them, and helping us understand how best we can help them. There is a real potential for this role to grow and develop with the right candidate.
This is a Hybrid / Remote role. The SUDEP Action offices are based in Wantage, Oxfordshire. All staff are expected to visit the office every 6 weeks for a team meeting as a minimum.

Please give specific examples to demonstrate your suitability to the role. Please note we will not accept applications without a covering letter which clearly covers this.
