Job Summary

This year, and every year, as many as 600 families in the UK will learn that their child has only half a working heart. These children have one of the most complex of all heart conditions, and there is no cure. Families in this situation need care and support to understand the information, make important treatment decisions, and meet the everyday challenges of living with half a heart can bring.

That is why Little Hearts Matter exists. We wrap a blanket of understanding and care around families at every stage of their half a heart journey. We are always here when they need us.

Without donations, Little Hearts Matter would not be able to offer our services, free of charge, to support individuals and families across the UK. We do not receive any government funding for our work. Our fundraising team is essential to raising these vital funds—over £440,000 annually. A better future for seriously ill children starts with you, our Fundraising Manager, within our three-person fundraising team.

In your first three months, you will get to know the charity well and figure out who our current supporters are. You will devise a plan for how you will use your experience to raise money, with a focus on building our challenge and events portfolio. You will also start building good relationships with key people inside and outside

Little Hearts Matter, including networking within the Birmingham and West Midlands business community.

By the end of your first year, you will have put your plan into action, continually improving it as you go. You will have built up our events and challenges portfolio, connected with donors, found new supporters, and tried out different ways to bring in funds and hit your target. You will have monitored your progress, using goals to measure success, and adjusting the plan when needed. Alongside this, you will have worked with the team to boost the Little Hearts Matter’s profile and impact so that fundraising efforts can keep going strong in the future.

About Little Hearts Matter

Little Hearts Matter (LHM) is a national charity with over 7000 members. We are the only charity in the UK that offers support and information to, and represents the needs of, children and families following a diagnosis of single ventricle heart disease (half a working heart). These congenital cardiac conditions can never be cured, even following repeated surgery, so the children must learn to live within the restrictions that their disability and fears for their future create.

Little Hearts Matter is there from the time parents learn of their child’s condition, through risk-filled treatment into a challenged-filled life at home. LHM is there to support the children, and their families, through their hopes and aspirations and the gradual realisation that they will never have the same life as their peers. Our aims are to:

Alleviate isolation by offering support, friendship and understanding from the time a diagnosis is made, through treatment decisions, hospital care and into life at home, eventually introducing parents and patients to other families who have similar experiences and shared concerns helping them to build a network of support.

Reduce fear by offering patients, parents, siblings, and the extended family a greater opportunity to understand the diagnosis and treatment paths available.

Reduce confusion and a lack of understanding by producing and supplying for free, user focused information that supports and aids understanding from the time of diagnosis, through treatments and into life at home.

Raise a greater awareness within Medical, Educational, Social and Governmental circles of the needs of children, and their families, as they travel through every stage of their lives.

Specific areas of responsibility

Working as part of the fundraising team, the Fundraising Manager will:  

• Be responsible for their own portfolio of supporters, maintaining and growing income, regularly forecasting income and expenditure against agreed targets (circa. £200,000+ annually)
• Proactively manage and grow relationships with diverse corporate and community supporters, delivering tailored propositions where appropriate, providing excellent relationship management to maximise their impact and long-term engagement.
• Build excellent working relationships with regional partners, supporters, and volunteers, to maximise the impact of their own fundraising and identify new opportunities through their networks.
• Develop and lead on exciting and engaging events, challenges and appeals to support the Fundraising team meeting its financial objectives.
• Work collaboratively with the Chief Executive, Head of Service and Grants Manager to ensure synergy in planning and delivery of income generation targets.
• Maintain accurate records of supporter interactions on the CRM system to deliver exceptional supporter experience and harness the value of data.
• Attend events, including out of hours working where necessary (compensated by Time in Lieu)
• Be a passionate ambassador for Little Hearts Matter, always maintaining the highest level of professionalism.
• Ensure all Fundraising activity complies with the Fundraising Code of Practice, GDPR guidelines, EDI principles, and other relevant regulations, guidance, and policies.

Lead a small team raising the resources and engaging with audiences to support the delivery of wide ranging services helping refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants to settle and thrive locally. You will deliver income and support by managing your own small team and collaborating with the rest of the organisation to tell stories, share information, build understanding and deliver the income needed to run the organisation. The Senior Public Affairs and Research Officer will drive policy change to increase surplus food redistribution by engaging with stakeholders across government, media, industry, and academia. The Senior Public Affairs and Research Officer will be critical in advancing FareShare’s policy agenda, as outlined in the manifesto. Working closely with the Public Affairs, Policy and Campaigns Consultant, you will lead efforts to engage influential stakeholders, create compelling content, and coordinate high-impact events. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence national policy and contribute to meaningful change in the food redistribution sector.

Key responsibilities 

Stakeholder Engagement: Build and manage relationships with diverse stakeholders, including government bodies, media, and academia, to advance FareShare’s policy objectives.

Policy, Research, and Briefings: Develop in-depth policy knowledge and produce well-researched briefings and reports articulating FareShare’s policy goals. Identify opportunities for FareShare to feed into Government consultations and Select Committees.

Role Requirements

The role holder will assist in maintaining high standards of professional competence and integrity in the finance team and play a pivotal role in supporting the Head of Finance in running the overall finance department.

Oversight of the integrity and accuracy of the general ledger

Responsibility for internal controls; prompt reconciliations of control accounts, separation of duties, and compliance with proscribed systems of authorisation

Assist in the preparation of annual accounts, in compliance with the SORP and relevant GAAP.  Liaison with external and internal auditors

Lead in preparation of the annual cash flow forecast, and preparation of monthly reconciliations between forecast and actual

Bank reconciliations and posting of transactions

Month end processes and journals

Manage the purchase ledger function, ensuring the ledger is kept clean and at an acceptable level.  Ensure the Purchase Ledger Manager is maintaining the sub ledgers within purchase ledger

Assist with the credit control function, in liaison with relevant service leads. This will be supported by KPIs

Oversee the Fundraising Accountant role, ensuring accuracy of reconciliations between Fundraising and Finance 

Manage the Fixed Asset Register, ensuring its accuracy

Commercial Property Manager | 6-month FTC | £55,000 - £65,000 + benefits. London

For a large commercially focused charity in London, we're recruiting a Property and Asset Manager for a 6-month contract to manage the performance of their property assets portfolio and ensure the delivery of a high-quality service to all users. The portfolio is a mix of commercial freehold, leasehold and managed service sites in the UK and some internationally. The Property and Asset Manager will report to the Director of Commercial Operations and will lead the management of freehold and leasehold commitments and develop both short-term and long-term property strategies.

Main Duties:

• Manage the performance of the property assets and ensure a high-quality of service delivery for a mix of around 40 properties across its portfolio of commercial freehold, leasehold and managed services sits in the UK and internationally

About the Role

We are recruiting a new Business Development Manager (BDM) to join our team. This is a mid-senior level position in the organisation, reporting to the Deputy Head of Business Development. The successful candidate will be responsible for the sustainable growth of our Equal Education (EE) and Green Economies and Infrastructure (GEI) Portfolios working closely with technical portfolio leads. We are seeking candidates with significant experience in a business development or sales role, ideally within the international development sector.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This is a Business Development Manager role (please see person specification below) within a cutting edge and growing international social development organisation. As a Business Development manager, you will identify and win new opportunities for the company. You will ensure and facilitate efficient bid development processes working closely with technical team colleagues, as well as finance, HR and programmes teams, to produce high-quality bids in a timely manner.

Business Development – Portfolio Management

· BD Lead on specific technical portfolios, acting as a liaison between the BD team and the technical team to proactively identify, track and win work in that technical area.

· Maintain accurate reporting of all sales activity.

· Manage a pipeline of opportunities.

· Attend donor market meetings (e.g. Early Market Engagement meetings) for relevant bids, engage in donor consultation and network with others as appropriate.

· Convene decision makers to make swift and informed decisions whether to bid or not.

· Lead on pre-positioning work to identify partners, team members and develop our approach (in collaboration with other colleagues) for new opportunities.

· Negotiate consortium roles on bids and develop a teaming agreement to reflect that.

· Lead on our response (with input from relevant colleagues) to direct approaches from clients to provide consultancy and research services.

· Regularly meet existing partners/clients to develop and maintain relationships and to proactively identify opportunities for further joint working.

Bid Production

· Lead on and be responsible for technical and commercial proposal development (including budget), working closely with colleagues from our technical, project management and finance teams. For large bids, the technical and commercial roles may be performed by two people, though the technical lead will retain responsibility for the whole process.

· Produce job descriptions/terms of reference for specific roles on new programmes.

· Use company resources and networks as well as own contacts to identify and contract consultants.

· Agree and document all terms in-line with BD process.

· Ensure compliance requirements for each bid are in place, e.g. data protection, due diligence etc.

· Capture and share learning from tenders under areas of responsibility.

· Review contracts for work won against the contract checklist.

· Deliver handover to the Programmes Team for seamless mobilisation.

Communications

· Contribute to internal action to strengthen SDDirect as an organisation through participation in meetings, working groups and other fora.

System and Process 

· Support the continuous improvement of BD Team performance.

· Actively participate in development of the BD Team annual workplan and objectives, taking a lead on agreed sections.

A summary of what we’re looking for:

• A fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CCAB, or CIMA) with significant experience in leading finance functions, ideally within the not-for-profit sector.

• Proven track record of managing financial and operational teams, with expertise in charity governance and accounting, investments, and strategic planning.

• Excellent leadership skills with the ability to inspire teams and work collaboratively with senior stakeholders.

• Strong analytical skills, with the ability to synthesise complex data to inform decision-making.

• A deep understanding of compliance, risk management, and regulatory requirements within the charity sector. 

The ideal candidate will have experience within a charity finance & operational role, with the corresponding knowledge and understanding of investment oversight, charity governance, and the HR & IT functions. An understanding of the healthcare context is also beneficial.
