About Us
Unfold is led by the people we serve and we get people where they want to be. We’re a bold, agile and growing organisation, with a friendly, energetic and welcoming team. As an established local charity (previously known as Westminster Befriend a Family), we’re powered by volunteers who support young people and families to identify and achieve goals that matter to them. We provide mentoring and peer support groups to people in Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea and the neighbouring boroughs.
We’re open to everyone, but we target those who face the most challenges: 93% of the people we work with describe themselves as coming from a racialized group, 85% of the families we support are single-parent households headed by a woman, and 75% of the children we support are eligible for free school meals. We also run specialized programmes of support for people seeking asylum and those with refugee status. Last year we provided one-to-one mentoring to over 246 people, and group support to a further 252 people. With increasing demand for our services, we expect to provide direct support to over 350 individuals in the coming year.
About the Role
As a Programme Officer at Unfold, you’ll ensure that our volunteer mentors feel supported and prepared for their work with young people. Alongside helping to recruit and onboard new mentors, including organising their training and reviewing their progress, you’ll be Volunteer Mentors main point of contact, making sure they have a rewarding and impactful experience. Your work will also include engaging with referrers, parents, and young people themselves, providing guidance and answering questions to ensure everyone feels connected to our mission.
You’ll also be hands-on with our youth programs, coordinating weekly Youth Support Groups and engaging with young people in outreach activities. You’ll work closely with our Programme Manager to build relationships with community organisations and support our Youth Advisory Council. Whether you’re planning group activities, creating outreach opportunities, or helping young people access resources, this role aims to empower youth across London.
About You
You’re passionate about youth development and have a strong understanding of London’s diverse communities, particularly in Westminster and nearby areas. You'll have great communication skills and will be comfortable connecting with people from a range of backgrounds. You'll also be able to positively represent Unfold at events, meetings, and group sessions.
In this role, you'll apply your organisational skills to keep track of details, manage multiple projects, and ensure data is accurate and up to date. Regardless of your previous experience in a similar role, it's your empathy, enthusiasm, and commitment to improving outcomes for young people that will make you a strong candidate for this position.
We accept applications from everyone and based on the profile of our service users, are particularly keen to hear from:
- Male candidates
- Candidates from a global majority background
- Applicants who may be less experienced, but have a good understanding, or lived experience of Westminister and Kensington and Chelsea.
Working with Us
- Holidays: 25 working days (along with additional Christmas closedown days)
- Pension: We offer generous pension provision: New staff are automatically enrolled for a pension after three months, and after six months we will match your contribution up to a maximum of 8%.
- Salary: We are committed to paying the London Living Wage in line with the Living Wage Foundation and review salaries annually.
- Team Working: We are a small but brilliant team: we're supportive, diverse, and we help each other out. There are always opportunities to get involved in different aspects of the organisation, or lead on new initiatives.
- Wellbeing - How we feel matters: Staff have access to a comprehensive Employee Assistance Programme, and our staff Wellbeing Champions support the delivery of our Wellbeing Strategy. Additionally, we’re excited to introduce three days a year dedicated to team building activities. These days are an opportunity to build skills, foster connections, and recharge as a team!
- Flexible Working: We're happy to consider flexible working arrangements in line with the requirements of the role.
- Hybrid Working: We work from the office or at least two days a week between Tuesday and Thursday. (Depending on your role you may need to work from the office or other London locations on other days.)
- Ecofriendly, Modern Offices: We work in a beautiful, accessible, eco-friendly co-working space with a number of other charities, with plants, a leafy roof terrace, free hot and cold drinks, breakfast cereals and fruit. With comfortable spaces to read quietly or talk in a group, our workspace is somewhere you'll want to be. You can find out more about our on-site benefits at the Fivefields website.
We welcome applications from everyone. Based on the profile of our service users we’re particularly keen to hear from male candidates, candidates with a global majority background, and applicants who have a good understanding and lived experience in Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea.

We are recruiting four Therapeutic Practitioners to deliver For Baby’s Sake in a new Regional Team in the North East of England. The post will be home based with some elements of hybrid working. Applicants need to be located in the North East of England and be able to travel across the region to deliver a hybrid of online and face-to-face sessions.
For Baby’s Sake is an innovative, therapeutic, trauma-informed programme. We work with both co-parents individually, supporting a recovery framework to overcome the devastating effects of domestic abuse in their relationship. We acknowledge and explore unresolved and often complex childhood trauma and change harmful patterns of behaviour to develop a home environment where children can flourish. We adopt an attachment-focussed parenting approach that enhances the opportunity for children to feel safe and secure, with parents who are emotionally available and attuned to all their needs.
There must be a current pregnancy to harness change motivations, a desire on behalf of both parents to co-parent their unborn baby (although they do not have to be in a relationship) and we can work with the families up until the baby reaches the age of two. The significance of this two-year timescale is evidenced in all recent child development research.
You will have the opportunity to support the continued evolution of For Baby’s Sake whilst ensuring fidelity to the programme and sustaining the ethos and values of the For Baby’s Sake Trust.
The For Baby’s Sake multi-disciplinary team consists of highly trained, therapeutic practitioners capable of establishing and maintaining meaningful, trusting relationships that consistently guarantee engagement and crucially provide the framework for the deeper, therapeutic exploration that allows co-parents to understand the impact of their own parenting experiences. To be part of this exceptional team you must have demonstrable therapeutic skills, sound knowledge and experience of safeguarding children and adults, infant mental health, and a thorough understanding of the dynamics of domestic abuse, attachment, and the impact of unresolved trauma.
The positions are full-time on a permanent contract. Full details, including the job description, person specification and background briefing information can be found in the relevant attachment. There will be an expectation of occasional travel to locations across the UK on occasions.
Further information about The For Baby’s Sake Trust can be found on our website.
To apply, please complete our application form. On receipt of your application, we will send you an equal opportunities monitoring form – this is confidential and voluntary and will not form part of the selection process.
Closing date: 27th November 2024
Interviews for the Therapeutic Practitioners are planned for Tuesday 10th & Wednesday 11th December 2024 in Durham.

About Us:
Write Back is a registered charity which builds self-esteem among marginalised young people by helping them to tell their own stories. We foster self-respect, community and independent voices for young people through immersive and inspiring storytelling programmes.
We have been operational since September 2019 and, in early 2020, registered with the Charity Commission and recruited a board of trustees. We have operated on a mostly voluntary basis and are now able to secure a more sustainable model for the charity.
We are now looking to take on at least one storytelling facilitator who can expand our capacity by supporting delivery of our programmes.
What We Do:
We run 10-week storytelling programmes open to students aged between 13 and 16 and identified by their teachers as lacking confidence, self-esteem or a creative outlet. These young people are referred to us by schools in Barking and Dagenham, and are then enrolled in our programmes at the Future Youth Zone, an award-winning local youth centre. In each session we run confidence-building activities, engage with the writing of a young author and then develop the stories of the participating young people. The 10-week project also involves working with writers and artists and culminates with the celebration of the young people’s work including in books, local museum exhibitions and much more.
Alongside our main projects, we run a graduate scheme that offers new creative opportunities for young people who have completed a 10-week programme. We also run bespoke, one-off storytelling sessions for young people in collaboration with other partners.
Our sessions primarily run in Future Youth Zone near Becontree but we also deliver other projects across Barking and Dagenham. Typically each group contains around 14-20 young storytellers.
What We’re Looking For:
We are looking for a passionate, engaged and collaborative facilitator with experience of youth work and storytelling who can help deliver our programmes. Depending on the availability of the candidate and the delivery needs, this would look like either leading on delivery of one of our pilot projects or assisting with the Director in the delivery of our core programmes.
We are looking for people initially interested in joining us on a freelance basis or part time one day a week from January to July 2025. We anticipate that, as we grow, there are likely to be expanded opportunities after this.
Objectives of Role:
● To co-deliver highly impactful storytelling programmes in Barking and Dagenham.
● To ensure the safety of young people and adults working for or with Write Back.
● To collaborate effectively with other members of our small staff and voluntary team.
● To show every young person we work with that they have a story to tell and the power to tell it.
Key tasks:
● To participate in the planning, delivery and evaluation of our storytelling programmes.
● To assist young storytellers in telling and writing their stories and provide empowering and impactful feedback.
● To shape the programmes through critical feedback.
● To provide feedback to schools and families about the progress of young people on the programme.
Details:
● Reporting to the Director of Programmes.
● The start date is January 2025
● We anticipate this opportunity running from January to July 2025 and we are hopeful that subject to funding we may be able to extend opportunities into the subsequent academic year.
Pay and Conditions:
● £35,000 per annum on a pro rata basis.
● We are keen to find the right candidate and are open to freelancers or part time employees on a one day a week basis.
● Most of our programme delivery takes place after school including in the evening and some occasional work on weekends and in school holidays. We are looking for a facilitator who can be flexible where possible.
Skills and Qualifications Required:
Essential:
● Experience running and delivering programmes for diverse groups of young people.
● Shared beliefs in the value of every young person’s stories and experiences and experience in creating welcoming and inclusive environments.
● Understanding of safeguarding and maintaining a safe environment for young people.
● A reflective practitioner who is able to share and gather feedback as well as take on new ideas.
● Experience of giving empowering feedback to young people.
● DBS check.
Desirable:
● Qualified Teacher Status.
● Experience giving written feedback to young people.
● Knowledge of our community in Barking and Dagenham.
● Experience working in youth centres.
● Experience within the third sector.
