About Access Academia
Access Academia is the charitable umbrella which was created out of the creation of the student-led publication, the Journal of Intersectional Social Justice. When Journal of Intersectional Social Justice (JISJ) was created, there were not any expectations for the project to be any more than that: a student-led academic publication. However, as it rolled on, attention for the project widened and it began to cover other topics and get involved in other realms of knowledge sharing, activism, and content creation. The creation of the seminal Access Series on the Intersections blog springboarded the idea for the JISJ to turn into something much more than a simple academic publication. Now as we have restructured the JISJ into Access Academia, we are finalising our official registration as a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) in the UK.
Our core purpose is to Make Academia More Accessible. We plan to accomplish this by many different avenues, as obviously it is a very wide-ranging goal! What is a Volunteership?

From our home in the former Royal High School building on Calton Hill in Edinburgh, the National Centre for Music will become an energising force in Scotland’s music sector. Through a variety of programmes and partnerships, the centre will nurture and celebrate music making from across Scotland. Nestled within two acres of beautiful, landscaped gardens, the centre will be open every day for people to enjoy and expand their musical passions.
We are looking for around four new trustees, including a Chair, to work closely with our executive team to develop and launch the organisation - defining the brand, setting the business model and staff team, establishing business partnerships and ensuring integration and collaboration with the music sector, as well as with Edinburgh and Scotland’s wider cultural infrastructure.

Our focus as an organisation supporting refugees are three-fold:
Frontline evacuations, where conflicts are at their their most precarious

Self-reliance projects such as an education centre in Jordan, or upskilling adult refugees into work abroad and in the UK via our "Vintage Emporium" charity shops.
You will gain invaluable experience as a senior marketeer, working directly with the Managing Director, spanning traditional and digital channels in disaster relief in an agile organisation that punches well above its weight, committing to saving the lives of people who otherwise wouldn't be saved. We are small - your voice will be heard and your creativity welcomed!
Your focus will be on marketing our AID SHOP, a groundbreaking humanitarian aid delivery system that allows the general public to turn their empathy for new crises (Gaza, Turkey & Syria earthquake etc) into effective immediate action.
When disaster strikes, or the season changes - survival items for escalating conflicts or disasters are changed and added to our website. You will communicate these updates via email campaigns and social media posts, the items are then 'purchased' by our supporters, with the shopping lists collated internally by you, then sent to our partners or volunteers on the ground who can purchase the physical items and deliver the survival items to vulnerable people in the most precarious and volatile regions, sometimes within minutes!
We also save greatly shipping and storage costs, and there is next to zero chance for unforseen delays at customs.
It is the most efficient way we know of giving in a crises - and is very efffective when marketed right (following either our set formulas, or bringing your own to experiment with). The best part? People know exactly where their money is going, so are justifiably much more generous!
So we need a volunteer (you!) to manage our marketing and communication efforts, ideally 2 days per week to:
*Post on social media (1 x reel / story per week, using a template to communicate the most needed survivial item of the week available for purchase in our "aid shop". 1 x Faceboo photo or video post)
*Update website as required
*Write 1 x compelling press release per week
*Update marketing / fundraising collateral
*Assist charity shops with creating leaflets and posters ad-hoc
*Organising our photos & videos by devising a tagging system

At Doorstep Library, we’re dedicated to bringing the magic of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of children who need our support.
With 1 in 4 children in the UK leaving primary school unable to read or write properly, we recruit and train in-person and online volunteers to introduce children from under-resourced areas to the pleasure of reading.
What’s Involved?
As a Doorstep Library reading volunteer, you’ll visit the same families via Zoom every week with eBooks to share with the children and encourage their love of reading.
You will:
- Handpick eBooks from our online portals based on the children’s age, interests, and reading level
- Join families via Zoom with your volunteer partner for 20-minute reading sessions
- Make notes after the session to keep track of how the child/ren are progressing
Our unique home-based approach allows our volunteers to build trusting relationships with families, helping them to connect with the community and equip them with the skills they need to succeed later in life.

- Time commitment: One evening a week (Regular Volunteer), one evening every other week (Semi-Regular Volunteer) or once every 3 weeks (Stand-In Volunteer) during school term times
- Hours per week: 2
- Days: Our projects run on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays from 4:30pm – 6:30pm

Doorstep Library is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people, and all those it comes into contact with. All volunteers undergo rigorous safer recruitment processes including specified interview questions, a DBS check, and the collection of written and/or verbal references. Role Overview
As the Volunteer Executive Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting the CEO by managing key administrative and strategic tasks that help drive the organisation’s success. This position offers a unique opportunity to work closely with senior leadership, gaining insight into high-level decision-making and organisational strategy.
You will act as a trusted partner to the CEO, assisting with scheduling, communication, and project coordination to ensure smooth day-to-day operations.

Responsibilities:
Act as a key point of contact and liaison between the CEO and internal/external stakeholders.
Coordinate, prepare, and follow up on meetings, ensuring the CEO is always equipped with relevant information and materials
Draft and edit correspondence, reports, and presentations to maintain a professional and impactful standard.
Undertake research and data analysis to support decision-making and strategic initiatives.
Assist with project management tasks, ensuring deadlines and objectives are met.
Support the planning and coordination of events, campaigns, and advocacy initiatives.
Keep track of key actions, priorities, and goals, ensuring the CEO's time is optimised for maximum impact.
Adapt to the evolving needs of the CEO and the organization, stepping into new challenges with enthusiasm.
What We’re Looking For
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Excellent written and verbal communication
Proficiency in Microsoft Office / Google Suite
Ability to work independently and handle confidential information
Previous experience in executive support or administration (preferred but not required)

About us
At The Mental Health Community we use our lived experience to build understanding and support for what it’s like to live and work alongside managing a mental health condition.
We know that it can be difficult to get, or keep a job if your energy levels, how you’re feeling and your ability to go to a place of work every day are affected by a mental health condition like anxiety or depression. But we also know that having a sense of purpose and belonging can really help with the symptoms and impact that mental health conditions can have on you.
Our work is focused on helping people with a mental health condition who are in work or looking for work. We do this by supporting businesses to improve how they look after people, because we know that by creating inclusive and safe spaces at work we make it possible for people with mental ill health to stay in the workplace which helps keep them well and benefits the businesses too.
By joining our board you will be:
- Making a lasting impact by helping us make more workplaces safe and inclusive for people with a mental health condition
- Shaping the future of our charity as we expand our services and reach more people who need our support
- Using your skills and experience for good by helping guide the strategic direction of our charity.
What we’re looking for
We are looking for at least 4 new trustees to join our team. Whatever your skillset, we’d love to hear from you and there are some areas where we need particular help:
· Treasurer: oversee our financial health, provide guidance on building long term financial plans to help us grow and ensure appropriate financial management.
· Marketing and Communications: strategic oversight of our marketing and communications, raising awareness of our work and reaching new audiences through digital strategies and media engagement.
· Fundraising: develop our fundraising strategy and income streams, including grant applications, corporate sponsorship and campaigns.
· Governance: guide us in operating transparently and effectively whilst maintaining high standards of governance in compliance with our governing document and charity law.
We particularly welcome applications from people with lived experience of mental ill health, young people aged 18-30, people of all socio-economic backgrounds, genders and people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities.
About the role
As a board of trustees we meet remotely every 6 weeks, there may be some activity in between meetings so the estimated total time commitment is 4 hours every 6 weeks.
In addition to using your specific skills to develop how we work, all trustees share responsibility for:
· Developing our activities to help us achieve our purpose and positive impact,
· Making sure we are compliant with our governing document and the requirements of the Charity Commission, and
· Being an active member of the board to help us make good decisions
What you can expect from us
We are committed to supporting our Trustees: you can expect an induction to the organisation and trustee role plus any additional conversations and support you need to help you feel confident in your role.
Our meetings are relaxed and informal; there are no expectations of ‘business clothes’, technical jargon or having all the answers.
We welcome and support your preferences for the way we work together, how you like to receive information and how we can make it easier for you to participate actively in our discussions.

We know that great trustees come from many backgrounds and with a variety of experiences and that’s great - we really value people who bring different perspectives and add new voices to our team.
