Are you a creative writer with an interest in the programme and themes of the National Science and Media Museum? Volunteer Bloggers develop a range of blog posts responding to our museum’s programme, including its exhibitions and festivals. We encourage all volunteers to apply their own creative approach when responding to and reviewing our programme and we welcome topics inspired by or touched on in our collections and wider programmes. You will be given blog guidelines to follow and lots of tips and ideas for where to start. During the year, there are sometimes opportunities to connect with our staff, external supporters or guest speakers.

In this role, it helps to live locally to make the most of opportunities to visit the museum and experience our events and exhibitions first hand, but you can volunteer in this role from wherever you live.

In this role you will:

• Write blog posts exploring aspects of our museum’s programme, exhibitions or collections.
• Liaise with museum staff to develop your content
• Where relevant, undertake research to develop your blog post

• Enjoy undertaking independent research on subjects explored by our museum
• Are looking to improve their writing skills by contributing to the online content of a national museum.

Some things you need to know:

• To volunteer in this role, you must be 18 or over. 
• All volunteers must attend an online taster session and a welcome session to join this role (held on Microsoft Teams). You must be available for one of each of these:
  • Taster: 13.30-14.30, Tues 25 Feb, or 17.30-18.30 the same day
  • Welcome: 13.30-14.30, Tues 4 March, or 17.30-18.30 the same day
• This role is remote, which means you can volunteer from wherever you live as long as you have a device with a word processor (such as Microsoft Word) and the ability to use email to be in touch with our team. It may be an advantage to you to be local, as you can visit our museum in person, but this isn’t essential.
• All blog posts shared as part of this role will be checked by our Comms team (and our Curatorial team where appropriate) before publishing. You will have feedback and support with producing your blog post(s).

Would you like to play a key role in supporting blind and partially sighted people in your local area? Are you great at communicating, love meeting others and enjoy using your admin and organisational skills? If this sounds like you, you’re the person we’re looking for to support our Erdington Sight Loss Support group meeting. The group began in 2019 and we resumed meeting face to face in May 2022.

We would like your help with:

• Planning and organising group meetings
• Liaising with the venue
• Contacting and booking guest speakers
• Supporting volunteers with sight loss with their volunteering activities.
• Sighted guiding
• Giving practical help to individuals so they can take part in the events.

How often will I be needed?

• 14 Hours per Month

3. Representing RNIB as an Ambassador for the Community Connection service.

Responsibilities: Facilitators are responsible for designing creative and interactive workshops for our young people, and delivering these workshops with our young people. We run some of our workshops online and other workshops are held in London. All workshops are held during the school holidays, in the evening and on weekends.

The workshop facilitator role is flexible and as part of your role, you may be involved in:

• Delivering and leading short workshops or courses, on behalf of GT Scholars (Online or offline)

• Designing engaging, interactive and educational workshops and short courses for young people and ensuring that the content is targeted to suit different abilities and capabilities

• Running your own bespoke workshops, eg. workshops in coding and technology

• Managing short activities and Q&A sessions during our workshops

• Working collaboratively with other event coordinators, volunteers, ambassadors, workshop facilitators and speakers at our events

• Following the agreed timings and content for workshops and courses

Person specification: 

As workshop facilitator, you will need to:

• Have passion, knowledge and experience in coding, computing and technology

• Have strong presentation skills

• Have strong communication skills

• Be personable and able to confidently communicate with people from a range of backgrounds and professions.

• Be passionate and committed to tackling educational inequality

• Be punctual and organised

Availability: Workshops will run during the day on school holiday dates, on Saturdays or in the evening (5pm-8pm).

Additional information: We will need to conduct reference checks and you will need an Enhanced DBS for this role as you will be working directly with children. We can process this for you or you may submit one if this is less than 2 years old.

Rate of pay: This is a self-employed role. You must be aged 18 or above. Facilitator sessions range from 2 to 6 hours. The rate of pay will vary based on the budget of the funder.
