Youth / Children Volunteer Roles

Our Peripatetic Team provide front-line support to Solace’s Advice, Community and accommodation-based Services across London. Crisis Intervention Workers enable our services to deliver a consistent high standard of service.

The team was created in order to have trained, skilled staff ready to cover gaps in service and facilitate the continued smooth running of services, proactively supporting women and children who have experienced domestic abuse. They are required to go into different teams and quickly establish themselves and provide support in times where staff teams may be struggling.

About the Role

The peripatetic team looks to support our different services when they are in crisis as such this role requires someone who is comfortable with change and can adapt to different services as they will move from team to team.
We need understanding and organised individuals who are keen to learn and develop skills in a variety of areas, are able to build relationships quickly and are able to work independently and also as part of a team.
Volunteers may be assigned to a new team for a duration ranging from a few days to a month, depending on the service needs.
The ideal volunteer will have a good telephone manner, excellent communication skills and be able to show empathy to service users. Volunteers will be given an extensive induction and will learn how to best support those who are experiencing or who have experienced abuse. They will support teams in a variety of ways, overseen by one central manager. The roles and tasks include:

• Perform administration tasks e.g. data entry, uploading minutes
• Answering duty line calls
• Contacting service users to check in, researching and making onward referrals.
• Researching local organisations and assisting to keep stakeholders up to date.
• Complete exit questionnaires and surveys.
• Promote service user involvement and send out relevant information and assist teams to organise events/feedback
  sessions.

Who are we looking for?

We offer great volunteer induction training, where you will be fully supported to understand and carry put every aspect of the role. Training includes CPD accredited courses, and the opportunity to apply to complete the Tackling and Preventing Domestic Abuse Award (DAPA), which is recognized by the Home Office.

Missing People is recruiting volunteers with expertise in Safeguarding to sit on our charity Safeguarding Panel. The Panel meets four times a year and assists the charity’s work by acting as critical friends - providing scrutiny, challenge and support to staff around safeguarding best practice.

The Panel is chaired by a Missing People Trustee and meetings are attended by Missing People’s Director of Services and Senior Managers, who present current projects, challenges and work for discussion. 

Description

Someone is reported missing every 90 seconds in the UK. Missing People is the only UK charity dedicated to reconnecting missing people and their loved ones. Our services include:

•  A free and confidential helpline, available 7 days a week, for missing people and their loved ones,
• A specialist family support and counselling service,
• Case publicity to support loved ones with sharing appeals,
• Specialist services for children and young people, and their loved ones, experiencing exploitation,
• Commissioned Return Home Interview services for young people at particular risk,
• Research, consultancy and training for professionals working around the issue of missing.

Our vision is that every missing person is found safe, and it is through the services above that we aim to safeguard and protect children and adults. True to our charity values, we offer confidentiality in order to build a relationship of trust, and we aim to empower our service users, respecting a person’s right to be missing and working with them to keep them safe.

Due to the complexity of the missing experience, we are always looking to improve our systems, processes and practice in relation to safeguarding. We cannot do this effectively without ‘critical friends’ who support the team to evaluate current work by asking the right questions and sharing external expertise.

We are currently recruiting new Safeguarding Panel members. Panel members are asked to:

• Attend and actively participate in Panel meetings - the Panel meets four times a year, usually for one hour. Meetings takes place via video call, and currently, meetings take place on Monday afternoons from 3-4pm.
• Read papers in advance of meetings - these are sent out in advance of the Panel meetings. Preparation for each meeting varies but is never more than 1-2 hours.
• If Panel members are interested, there are also additional opportunities to get further involved with the charity’s work. This is entirely optional.

What impact will you have?

Your input will support Missing People to recognise risk and protect children and adults effectively, safely and within a culture that is always acting on any opportunities for learning. This is vital to our work of providing a lifeline and meaningful support to all individuals and communities impacted by missing.

About the volunteer

We are looking for volunteers with:

• A strong understanding of safeguarding principles and practice, especially within the voluntary and/or statutory sectors.
• Experience of working with children and/or adults in areas such as exploitation, homelessness, mental health, modern slavery, refugee and migrant justice, social care, suicide prevention and victim support.
• Alignment with the ethos of Missing People’s services: to respect the agency of individuals, protect confidentiality and anonymity, and work alongside individuals, wherever possible.
• The ability to ask key questions and provide scrutiny and support to Missing People staff and volunteers (Trustee Panel Members and other Panel Members).
• Commitment to attend quarterly Panel meetings for a period of 3 years (a three-year term).

About the roles

With our board currently being led by John Tew until July 2025, we are looking to appoint a new Chair to support our new CEO & Principal and her senior leadership team in the years ahead. Who we are looking for

Chair

As our new Chair, you will bring prior board experience – perhaps as a Chair or Committee Chair or member of a Board in a similar size or complex setting – and, therefore, an understanding of the processes, procedures and expectations related to good governance.

You may also bring experience as a senior executive who has previously reported to a strategic non-executive board.

Governors

You will need to understand the importance of community cohesion and knowledge of the issues and landscape of the areas or similar to the areas we are working in. Furthermore, you will bring an understanding of the impacts that our sector has on individuals, employers and the local communities we serve across the Sandwell Council borough, and Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury, and West Bromwich and across Greater Birmingham and the West Midlands, or similar demographic areas.

Candidates for these roles will need to have a professional background and demonstrable expertise in one of the following areas:

• Qualified finance professional
• Leadership experience gained from a large local employer
• Curriculum & quality of education

Could you volunteer and make a difference to a young person in care?

An Independent Visitor is a positive adult role model who provides support and friendship to a young person in care.  You will enjoy fun activities together which will give the young person unforgettable memories and experiences.  Your consistent friendship will help the young person raise their aspirations, learn new skills, build self-esteem, confidence, and resilience.

We are looking for fun, reliable, and enthusiastic volunteers from all different cultures, backgrounds, and experiences.  You do not need any formal qualifications to become a volunteer, but it is helpful if you have some knowledge and practical experience of involvement with children and young people. 

In particular we have one young boy who needs a patient, loyal individual to build a long lasting positive relationship with.  He likes being outside, partaking in messy or imaginative play, space, and crafts - big cardboard boxes are a favourite! For this young boy we are looking for a volunteer with experience of supporting young people with special educational needs and behavioural support  - If you think you could help, please get in touch.

Children and young people who are looked after need an adult who has time to spend with them, take them on activities and be someone they can talk to and trust.  You can fit your visits in around your own time and work commitments.  We only ask that you can commit to a few hours once per month for a minimum of 2 years. Activity and travel expenses are covered.

We offer a full support package including induction training, online mandatory training and one to one support by your IV Coordinator throughout your volunteer journey.

Youth Helper work directly with young people in St John Ambulance Badger Setts and Cadet Units. By support our Youht Leaders to deliver a sessions across our range of programmes. In this role, you'll support the learning and development of young people into the next generation of health citizens. Youth Helpers also help young people develop their confidence, teamwork skills, self-discipline, and generally encourage them to strive to be the best they can be, as well as supervise and support other adult volunteers in their team.

You’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time. 

This role will be covered across various locations including Grantham, Sleaford and Lincoln

What we do

We are a well established and respected creative charity who believes that anyone can enjoy good mental health and wellbeing by engaging in creative activities.

We provide regular art and craft sessions for children and adults with a wide variety of needs.

We extend our reach by providing sessions for partners, including local schools, Southend in Sight, Sanctuary Housing and South Essex Homes.

We engage with the wider community by providing art and craft activities at local events, by offering volunteering and employment opportunities, and holding exhibitions.

Who we need

We need people with experience of finance, HR, fundraising, event management, digital engagement, PR, partnerships, and/or delivering creative services.

We need creative thinkers who can work collaboratively to provide the leadership that The Art Ministry needs to achieve its strategic objective of helping even more members of the local community improve their mental health and wellbeing by engaging in creative activities.

You will need to commit to at least 4 hours a month, including at least 4 trustee meetings a year.

What we will give you

This pivotal position will require a visionary leader who is not only passionate about our work but also possesses the strategic acumen to guide the charity in its mission to support bereaved families. As Chair, you will work closely with our talented Board, management team, and stakeholders to drive our vision, foster impactful partnerships and ensure governance excellence.

In this role you will provide strategic leadership to the Board, setting a clear vision and direction for Grief Encounter. You will also oversee the effective governance of the charity, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and ethical standards. Fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture within the Board and across the organisation, you will play a pivotal role in cultivating relationships with stakeholders, partners, and the community to enhance awareness and support for our mission.

We are seeking an individual with proven experience in a senior leadership role, preferably in the charity sector or with organisations focused on mental health, education, or social care. With a strong understanding of governance, financial management, and strategic planning in a non-profit context we are also looking for individuals to demonstrate a passion for supporting bereaved children and families, with a commitment to advancing their needs..

elop is an award-winning LGBT Mental Health and Wellbeing Charity with 30 years’ experience of supporting LGBT+ communities across London and surrounding areas.

Joining our LGBT+ Group Facilitators team, you will be part of an enthusiastic and dedicated team who value & appreciate the benefit of supporting others to  socialise & network, supporting LGBT+ people to come together in a welcoming, safe and supportive environment with opportunities to meet new people, form new friendships, gain peer support and much more. 

Each of elop’s dedicated groups or meet-ups run planned activities that supports shared interaction, positive identities and a feeling of being valued.

Duties

Volunteering in this role will give you opportunities to contribute & support the planning & promotion of group programmes, help in organising & facilitating sessions, along with supporting & enabling the involvement, voice & inclusion of all members attending, ensuring a welcome, supported, safe and comfortable environment for all.

Our activities are delivered on various days and times across the week and weekends, so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. 

You may already have some previous experience of activity facilitation, which is fantastic; however it isn’t necessary to come with all the skills & experiences already on board, just a friendly & outgoing personality with good communication abilities, the rest you’ll be supported to develop.
