We know how much difference a Health Play Specialist can make to children who are
seriously ill and for a lot of hospitals and community healthcare settings these roles can fall by
the wayside when budgets are critically tight. Our pilot Starlight Health Play Specialist project
has now demonstrated the positive impact of play staff for babies, children and families.
We’ve already learned so much and are designing an impact assessment tool with the
practitioners. Although the setup of the project is done, there is lots of learning still to do and
the manager of this work will facilitate and maximise this learning.
Starlight Health Play Specialists not only create the time, space and opportunity for children to
play, whether that’s for preparation for procedures, management of anxiety, entertainment
during long periods of boredom or aiding recovery. They carry out on-the-ground research,
measure impact of activities, sharing their learning with us and help us to really understand
what makes a brilliant Health Play Specialist and develop standards and training. They are
beacons of good practice, championing and protecting play in healthcare – and that is where
you, our new Play Specialist Programme Manager, come in.
Our ideal candidate will be a digital expert. You might have experience from the public, private or third sector or as a freelancer.
You will understand audiences and be a great writer for digital channels. You will be at home with the technical jargon of the digital world but be able to interpret and translate this for colleagues across the charity, cutting through piles of data to spot what is important.
This is a revamped, highly rewarding role, reflecting a renewed emphasis that we place on our paid media, and your work will be transformational working within a friendly and hardworking team committed to keeping children safe from sexual harm.

Who are Guts UK Charity?
People are suffering. People are dying. All because of a lack of knowledge about our guts.
Guts UK is the only charity that covers all of the digestive system, from ‘top to tail’ covering the gut, the liver and the pancreas. Guts UK works actively and collaboratively with other charities. However, with our own limited resources, we choose to focus particularly on the conditions that have no other specific charity or voice - those illnesses that really are underserved such as pancreatitis, diverticular disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), childhood gut and liver disease and digestive cancers.
Our vision is a world where digestive disorders are better understood, better treated and everyone who lives with one gets the support that they need.
