The Helen Bamber Foundation Group, comprising the Helen Bamber Foundation and Asylum Aid, stands at the forefront of human rights work, providing life-changing support to survivors of trafficking, torture, and extreme human cruelty. As we settle into our newly developed Trauma Centre in London, we are entering a critical moment in our journey, building on our many successes to date. This purpose-built space represents more than just a new home for our services – it is a platform for expanding our impact, strengthening our model of Integrated Care, and deepening our collaborations with partners across the sector. We are seeking an exceptional Chief Executive Officer to lead us through this next phase, navigating a shifting external landscape while ensuring our organisation continues to thrive.

The human rights sector is facing immense challenges. Survivors’ needs are growing more complex, the policy environment is increasingly hostile, and resources remain constrained. Our new CEO will meet these challenges with determination, building on our legacy of expertise to drive systemic change. You will have the opportunity to shape innovative service delivery, influence policy at the highest levels, and ensure that our voice continues to punch above its weight. As the leader of both charities, you will work closely with our highly skilled Boards of Trustees, including our Lived Experience Board Observers, to ensure our work remains authentic, grounded in survivor experience, and impactful at scale.

We are looking for a leader with a strong track record of strategic leadership in the charity, non-profit, or social justice sector. An understanding of human rights and an aptitude for advocacy and influencing policy will be crucial, and we are particularly interested in your ability to build effective partnerships, enhance our external profile, and secure sustainable funding. Our organisation has long been defined by ambition beyond its size, and your leadership will help us continue to deliver world-class support while making a lasting impact on the systems that shape survivors’ lives.

This role requires someone who can move seamlessly between strategic oversight and operational excellence, from representing our mission on national and international stages to inspiring our team of 75+ staff and 100+ volunteers. Most importantly, you will bring an unwavering commitment to justice, human dignity, and the rights of survivors – the values that have defined our work since our founding.

We are looking for an experienced senior fundraiser who has demonstrable success in generating income through a range of income streams and prides themselves on compelling, engaging written communications for a range of audiences. Recently kicking off our new ‘Creating Positive Change Together’ strategy, coproduced by over 130 staff, volunteers, clients and partner, Groundswell has ambitious plans and a compelling model which in its simplest form promotes healthier lives and a better future for anyone who has experienced homelessness. 

The post-holder will have the opportunity to develop Groundswell’s next fundraising strategy, working closely with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), and particularly Finance & Fundraising Director who can bring a wealth of knowledge and insight from recent external and internal reviews of Groundswell’s fundraising portfolio. You will be a champion for the joined up working of fundraising and communications, with the ability to line manage a team and lead strategic plans to engage a range of current and potential donors (individuals, trusts, corporates) to diversify Groundswell’s income and ultimately help Groundswell continue to create positive change in the lives of people, services and systems on their mission to tackle homeless health inequalities.

You will put relationships and effective communications at the core of your work; ensuring both those who give (or have the potential to give), alongside crucial internal stakeholders are energised and involved in Groundswell’s mission. You will pride yourself in collaborative working to ensure the most successful chance of securing income, whilst being a self-starter who can manage their own workload effectively.

OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE

As the Practitioner Psychologist/Psychotherapist delivering the partnership with the British Red Cross you will be based in two BRC Refugee Support services in Leicester and Derby whilst remaining part of the Helen Bamber Foundation Team. You will be responsible, with support from the senior Helen Bamber Foundation clinical team, for delivering assessments of individuals referred by the BRC Senior Psychosocial Practitioner. You will support effective referrals into local mental health services, and, where treatment cannot be provided elsewhere and would have significant benefits, deliver a range of therapeutic interventions to a small number of BRC clients. You will provide and support outreach and training of local health care providers to increase their capacity to support trauma survivors.

This role will include delivery of highly specialised psychological assessments for both medico-legal and clinical purposes, provision of appropriate evidence-based therapies, delivery of training to local mental health providers as well as to staff from non-clinical backgrounds who have significant client contact, internal relationship and partnership building, monitoring of outcomes, and potentially the supervision of a trainee clinical psychologist on a final year specialist placement. The role will include input into partnership development, policy, research and fundraising.

We are looking for someone who is committed to working therapeutically with individuals who have experienced human rights abuses and who have developed trauma spectrum disorders as a result. In addition to proven experience in working therapeutically with this client group, the candidate will have a passion for human rights work beyond the individual client work, and a desire to contribute to effecting change at a policy level. This role requires the ability to react and respond creatively and appropriately to the needs of the service and the partnership. You will be required to travel to London occasionally to participate in meetings, professional development and other activities (this travel will be reimbursed).

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Provide specialist psychological assessments and deliver psychological therapies to clients of the BRC Refugee Support services in Leicester and Derby (and where approved other services in the East Midlands);

· Contribute to the monitoring of activity and outcomes from the partnership;

· Work closely with the BRC Senior Psychosocial Practitioner to develop training and outreach for the local mental health providers and where appropriate the BRC Refugee Support service teams;

· Train in the preparation of medico-legal reports and contribute to the preparation of these reports for clients of the East Midlands BRC Refugee Support services;

· Develop and carry out audits and research projects relevant to the Helen Bamber Foundation or the partnership (in collaboration with the BRC Senior Psychological Practitioner and the Director of Therapy and Executive Director of Clinical and Counter-Trafficking);

· Provide internal and external training in collaboration with the HBF clinical management team;

· Supervise junior staff; and

· Liaise with other non-statutory and statutory organisations on matters of clinical care and policy.

· Where applicable, contribute to policy and position statements with other members of the Helen Bamber Foundation and the British Red Cross and represent the partnership at conferences and other events.
