Reporting to the Festival Director and overseeing a team of five fundraisers responsible for bringing in significant income, this role will be crucial in ensuring the Book Festival’s ongoing success and ability to meet its targets and goals.

As well as team management, the Development Director will personally manage a small high-value portfolio of funding relationships across all income streams and will have significant opportunity to develop new income streams, including legacies and US fundraising, as well as continuing the growth of the existing areas of income.

What are we looking for?

A dedicated and experienced professional with substantial experience of the corporate governance, preferably in a membership organisation or charity. You should ideally hold or be working towards a Chartered Governance Institute qualification, with a proven commitment to professional development in this field.

Experience of working closely with boards and senior managers is essential. You will have the ability to advise, guide, train and support colleagues and the Board on their legal, regulatory, and ethical responsibilities and duties.

Experience of developing corporate policy and effective systems in support of organisational objectives and activities. Additionally, you will demonstrate strong communication and report-writing skills, and the ability to present complex issues and information effectively at Board level.

The Role

To deliver on our new strategy and exciting capital and activity Masterplan, Wonderseekers is growing its Fundraising Team. The Head of Major Gifts is a pivotal new role within this team: working closely with the Director of Fundraising and managing a small team of experienced Trusts & Foundations (T&F) fundraisers, to achieve an initial target of circa £3.5 million within the next two years.

Accomplished at assimilating and interpreting complex information to craft compelling, high-level funding proposals, the post holder will lead and coordinate project fundraising campaigns to achieve the individual project targets, ensuring the highest quality of funding approach and donor stewardship across the Major Gifts Team.

In addition to managing and supporting the in-house T&F Managers and freelance T&F fundraisers to secure five and six figure grants, the post holder will develop and manage their own portfolio of major T&Fs and high net worth individual (HNWI) donors contributing circa £1 million towards the overall initial target. Working with the Director of Fundraising, they will play a lead role in establishing a strong and loyal major donor base of organisations and HNWI for the Charity in anticipation of future funding needs.

The post holder will have impeccable interpersonal and presentation skills and be comfortable representing the Charity and engaging with senior internal and external stakeholders at the highest level.

This is an exciting opportunity for a senior fundraiser to become an influential member of the Charity’s Leadership Team. Following achievement of the initial target, the Head of Major Gifts will play a strategic role in designing and implementing future fundraising campaigns (for “business as usual” and special projects) to support the Charity’s strategic plan and maximise its social impact.

Key Responsibilities

• Work with the Director of Fundraising, other members of the Senior Leadership Team, Trustees and the Charity’s Volunteer Leaders to develop and grow a HNWI funding pipeline, conducting contact mapping and other research, producing briefing notes, working with senior stakeholders to develop and implement cultivation plans and organising information / cultivation events
• Work with the Head of Impact & Learning to plan and deliver project impact reports for funders

Person Specification:

English for Action provides free, participatory, and empowering English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)  classes for migrants in London. Our classes are spaces to build community and support students to organise collectively around issues like employment and housing rights. Our work currently supports around 400 adult migrants across London. We’ve become a national centre of good practice for a radical participatory approach to ESOL, informed by the work of Paulo Freire, and we share this approach through training, research and partnerships. 

Organisation: We are a staff team of 8 people supported by a larger team of volunteers and 9 trustees. EFA promotes shared leadership and collaboration and we aim for our organisational structure to reflect this. In the last 4 years we’ve transitioned away from having a CEO to an executive team to oversee operations and decision-making. As a charity, ultimate responsibility for, and control of, the organisation lies with the Board of Trustees. 

Fundraising at EFA: We have one permanent fundraiser at EFA, who works two days per week on this area of work. The majority of EFA’s funding comes from charitable trusts and foundations but we are also funded directly by some of our partner institutions to provide courses for their members. We receive some local authority/EU funding as well. We raise additional funds through individual giving, corporate relationships and earned income. We are keen to explore new areas of fundraising and/or develop some of our less well established income streams.

Job Purpose: 

The Head of Brand and Content plays a lead role in managing the brand, overseeing the production of content, coordinating content across all channels and ensuring that it follows MSF’s objectives in terms of operations, fundraising, advocacy and recruitment.

In close collaboration with the Director of Communications, you would lead the development and implementation of the organisation’s brand and content strategy. 

You would manage and support a team of content producers in line with our best practice management standards; appraising, coaching, mentoring and supporting your team and ensuring they are fulfilling their objectives to the best of their ability. You will also ensure that your team supports content producers in other teams by ensuring products adhere to brand guidelines and by providing copywriting and editorial support, audio-visual materials and graphic design services. 

You will operate collaboratively across multiple departments and teams within MSF UK, including Fundraising, HAARP (advocacy) and the Manson Unit to ensure quality and strategic alignment of cross-departmental communications initiatives. You will also serve as a focal point for discussions on content management across the international MSF movement, of which MSF UK is a member. 

Knowledge, Skill & Experience: 

• Demonstrable experience of devising and delivering communications strategies to advance the aims of an organization 
• Extensive knowledge of the principles of brand management and brand practice 
• Demonstratable knowledge and senior experience of digital and print production processes, content gathering, content management systems, copywriting/editorial, audiovisual and graphic design, or a mixture of these
• Outstanding organisational and strategic skills with the ability to handle large volumes of work, track multiple projects or activities at any one time
