About us
Who we are
English for Action (EFA London) is a registered charity established in 2009, and a company limited by guarantee. We provide free, accessible and empowering English language classes and community organsing training to adult migrants in London. We are also one of the leading proponents of participatory ESOL, an innovative approach to teaching English which combines student‐centred learning inside the classroom with action for social change outside the classroom.
At EFA, we believe in the power of education for social change. We currently reach around 300 learners per week. We set up classes with partner organisations, like primary schools, in areas where there is a clear need for free English language (ESOL) provision. Our students come from a range of countries, but many are mothers with young children, blocked from accessing mainstream English language courses because they can’t afford the fees or can’t afford to pay for childcare while they study.
Our classes are warm, unintimidating spaces where students not only learn English, but also connect with other people in their communities, share experiences, discuss important issues and develop new skills. As well as teaching, we also support students to take action to effect change in their own lives, in their communities or even further afield, if they want to.
EFA also conducts research and provides training to other ESOL teachers and practitioners in participatory approaches to ESOL.
