BACKGROUND
Our work has never been more needed. The latest research suggesting that the number of children and young people at risk of hunger has rocketed to 2.6 million* means that one in five children don't have enough to eat.When a child is too hungry to learn, when they’re aching for something to eat, they can’t concentrate. They can’t absorb information. Big feelings and worries can be impossible to control. They fall behind in their studies.
Magic Breakfast provide a nutritious and filling breakfast to over 300,000 children and young people every school day. We work with schools in areas of high disadvantage, helping staff target the children most in need without barrier or stigma. Magic Breakfast are ambitious to grow our impact to remove hunger as a barrier to learning for all children and young people in the UK.
This is an exciting time to join Magic Breakfast if you wish to make a difference to the lives of children as we work to influence both policy implementation, with the national rollout of primary-aged universal school breakfast, and legislative change, through the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill. There has also been commitment from the Scottish Government for a national breakfast scheme and we are seeking to expand our advocacy work into Wales. Magic Breakfast’s influence will be instrumental to ensuring school breakfasts are implemented in a way that is hunger-focused and barrier free.
In addition, thousands of secondary school children are at risk of losing their free school breakfasts from September next year. For many of these students, this is their only opportunity to have a nutritious meal before facing a demanding school day, including taking exams. And for the very youngest, we know that the disadvantage gap begins before they even reach reception. With the Government commitment to another 100,000 places in school-based nurseries, early years is also a critical part of our advocacy work.

JOB PURPOSE
The Head of Policy & Public Affairs will review, develop and implement our advocacy strategy and lead a team to influence the devolved legislatures across the UK to address child morning hunger, with a view to the underlying systemic causes of child poverty and hunger, by driving change through policy and legislation. The role operates at our ‘Head of level’ which is the most senior operational specialist level and provides both operational and strategic leadership.
This role will also provide wider leadership across the charity and input into organisational strategy development and planning as part of the Core Management Group. This role will ensure that the Policy and Public Affairs function is aligned to the wider strategic aims and outcomes of Magic Breakfast as well as the internal operational systems and delivery.
The strategic leadership will ensure an external and long term view, with an outward looking and forward thinking approach that builds thought leadership, relationships and partnerships, with positioning to anticipate and build on new opportunities to end child morning hunger for good.
It will require an experienced Policy and Public Affairs professional, with significant experience of high impact and demonstrable outcomes at a senior level in the field. The postholder will lead the policy and public affairs team to influence the Early Adopters Scheme, the national rollout of primary school breakfast provision in England and breakfast legislation in the Children’s Wellbeing Bill (CWB).
They will also develop, guide and lead plans to influence the Scottish government, particularly in the run up to the election in May 2026 and the influencing of manifestos; and will lead Magic Breakfast’s upcoming influencing work in Wales.
In the external leadership that the role provides they will build relationships with politicians, political influencers, special advisors and civil servants to establish long-term, sustainable solutions to child morning hunger in the UK.
As a compassionate, people centric and inspiring leader they will work to enable their team to grow and develop in their skills ensuring they can step away from the detail whilst retaining accountability, build effective resource management and progression pathways. This role may manage external consultants where necessary, and work collaboratively with external organisations to amplify our voice and asks and strengthen our position as a thought leader.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
· Review and define the advocacy strategy for 25/26 in line both with moving political environment and Magic Breakfast’s influencing agenda, considering the systemic barriers to ending child morning hunger for good.
· Develop and maintain close relationships with the Department for Education and other key departments including Department for Health and Social Care and Treasury, to secure hunger and child focus as key priorities for breakfast provision.
· Develop, monitor and evaluate influencing plans for each devolved nation
· Support the development of influencing plans with coalition groups and organisations to influence school breakfast policy, commitments and implementation
· Review policy positions in Wales and Northern Ireland and define our advocacy approach, gaining external insights and analysing available research and data to shape the plan
· Develop a vision for advocacy beyond current demands, considering political appetite and gaining insight from lived experience communities and relevant sectors, to ensure that we are clear on future asks, and can build the foundation towards them.
· Work with Impact and Insights team to define future research needs to meet our longer-term advocacy plans
· Enhance and establish internal processes and ensure good internal information dissemination
· Work closely with key internal stakeholders to shape advocacy work and support broader organisational objectives

In this 18-month fixed-term role, you’ll oversee the full lifecycle of over 300 digital learning modules. You’ll collaborate with the Learning Development Manager, the Learning Technologist and the e-learning faculty comprising Subject Matter Experts (SMEs – who are doctors) while undertaking the project to relaunch these essential resources on our new Learning Management System (LMS).

What you’ll do
- Oversee the entire life cycle of selected R-ITI modules marked for redevelopment, from establishing SME groups to review and update content, to working with learning technology colleagues to produce and publish them on time and within budget on RCR’s LMS.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define project goals and objectives and provide support to the working groups whilst they redevelop the modules.
- Develop detailed project plans including timelines, milestones, deliverables, and resource allocation.
- Be responsible for overall quality control of newly developed content by working collaboratively with SMEs and learning technology colleagues to create accurate, engaging and effective e-learning content for our members.
- Lead cross-functional teams consisting of SMEs, internal or externally sourced e-learning developers, designers, and quality assurance testers.
- Be the main point of contact for stakeholders, providing necessary support, troubleshooting queries and ensuring strategically sound decisions are made.
- Manage project budgets and promptly report any potential spending variances to the Learning Development Manager.

What you will be doing:
We’re searching for an energic and dynamic fundraiser to develop and lead our fundraising team, as they, in turn nurture our existing supporters, inspire and engage new supporters and ensure the delivery of excellent fundraising across Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire and Somerset.

Job Profile
CAFOD’s work in the Catholic community of England and Wales is to inspire and resource Catholics to participate in the Church’s mission to overcome poverty and injustice in partnership with CAFOD.
The main purpose of this role is to inspire and increase the participation in CAFOD’s work of Catholic parishes, schools and the broader Catholic community within the Nottingham Diocese. This will be accomplished partly by the recruitment and support of a team of committed, inspired and well-resourced volunteers working in parish and school communities to enable and equip Catholics to give, act and pray. The work will also involve meeting gatekeepers, networks and other stakeholders within the diocese to build fruitful and positive relationships.
The Community Participation Co-ordinator (CPC) is part of a regional team working across a group of dioceses and whilst having a primary focus on one diocese, is responsible for the results of the regional team plans in relation to volunteer recruitment and retention and parishion and school participation.
The role will be hybrid (40-60% of time at home and 40-60% based from the volunteer centre) or fully based from CAFOD’s Nottingham Diocese volunteer centre currently in Nottingham city centre, although it is expected that the post holder will be mobile and flexible to meet volunteers, clergy and other stakeholders as required. The post holder will also be meeting with other regional team members as required both virtually and face to face. At times it will be necessary to transport some equipment and resources and to be flexible to work evenings and weekends.
The role requires a willingness to be adaptable to support the work of the regional team, deploying skills, knowledge and at times activity in other parts of the regional team area. This is likely to require some additional travel (which would be reimbursed by CAFOD). The post also requires weekend and evening work for while time off in lieu (toil) can be claimed.
CPCs are accountable for delivering CAFOD’s annual participation plans locally across England and Wales. As well as growing the number of parishes participating, the plan is also focused on enabling parish communities to expand the breadth of their participation. Through greater numbers and activity of schools volunteers and volunteer co-ordinators, more schools will be visited by a CAFOD volunteer. It is not expected that the post-holder will routinely visit schools but that the vast majority of visits be completed by volunteers.
The post reports to the Community Participation Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Delivering participation plans
- Share accountability for delivery of annual participation plans for the region (a group of dioceses) with a primary focus on one diocese, and for fundraising, education, campaigns, and other targets, as delineated by the participation plan for the region. It is anticipated that the role will have an 80% focus on parish communities and a 20% focus on school communities
- Contribute to the development and delivery of a regional plan across a number of dioceses in support of the annual participation plans and appropriate for local contexts
- Achieve targets for increasing parishioner and children & young people participation primarily through recruitment and retention of volunteers and working with gatekeepers
- Be willing and able to share reports and information around community participation and recruitment, activity, development and retention of volunteers
- Closely monitor parish participation activity
Managing volunteers
- Be the local volunteer manager in a specific diocese or dioceses
- Hold the relationship with, and coordinate the work of, a number of volunteers in order to achieve the annual participation plan in the region
- Contribute to increasing the number and activity of parish and school volunteers and volunteer co-ordinators in line with the regional team plan
- Contribute to development of volunteering opportunities especially the growth of volunteer leaders
- Match the offers, skills, experiences and expectations of volunteers with opportunities and needs in relation to CAFOD’s plans for parishioners and children & young people
- Ensure each volunteer is appropriately inducted, briefed, trained and resourced

Managing relationships
- Build and maintain key relationships including with priests, school staff, academy trusts and others within a diocese as determined in the regional plan. Be point of contact with local Bishop.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with diocesan communications officers and press and be a point of contact for local broadcast and print media, to increase opportunities for Catholics to hear about CAFOD’s work, working with and through media volunteers where possible.

About the role
The Media, PR & Digital Manager leads and supports the delivery of flexible, cost-effective and class-leading media, marketing, and digital communications. This role ensures MSSC achieves its objectives across campaigns, fundraising and policy through targeted and effective profile building in the media and across multiple online platforms.
The post holder will manage media communications activities, delivered in-house or outsourced as appropriate, to meet the needs of MSSC while maintaining the charity’s image, values and stakeholder engagement.
Responsibilities
Media & Public Relations
- Proactively explore national and regional opportunities for media coverage, establishing effective media links to raise the profile of the organisation.
- Lead and coordinate integrated media campaigns alongside digital marketing efforts for maximum impact and coverage.
- Support communication with MSSC’s internal and external stakeholders on sensitive media matters.
Marketing & Digital Communications
- Manage and coordinate the use of digital channels, including intranets, websites and social media.
- Lead the development and support of the DAMS (Marketing Hub) to facilitate effective brand and campaign management.
- Contribute to the production of high-quality, on-brand marketing materials, ensuring they meet deadlines and engage target audiences.
- Assist with website development and paid digital marketing campaigns.
- Develop and maintain MSSC’s social media channels and other digital communication platforms.
Requirements
- Degree graduate or equivalent and experience in a communications environment.
- Experience in a similar role.
- Experience in developing and maintaining good working relations with journalists and media specialists.
- Excellent written and verbal skills with good attention to detail.
- Understanding of principles of media, PR, social media and communications.

Purpose
To provide administrative support to the CBM UK Programme Development Department, especially to its Programme Funding team; enabling efficient management of stakeholder relationships and submission of quality proposals to institutional donors. This support will contribute to the funding and effective delivery of disability-inclusive development and humanitarian programmes in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs).
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Programme Funding, the majority of the Programme Officer’s time will be spent supporting the Programme Funding team, which is part of the Programme Development (PD) Department.
Programme Funding, Programme Finance and Programme Management work very closely together as the PD Department, covering the whole Project Cycle including design, contracting, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. As well as supporting Programme Funding (75-80% of the role), you will also support smooth running of other aspects of the PD Department (20-25%). To represent the latter, there is a ‘dotted line’ of reporting from the Programme Officer to both the Head of Programmes and the Director of Programme Impact. Full induction and internal training on all CBM UK-specific tasks, systems and processes will be provided.
Programme Funding Support (75-80%)
• Support scanning for suitable new funding opportunities, and create clear summaries of donor requirements.
• Keep the Programme Funding team, and each proposal development team1, highly organised, enabling efficient progress towards a submission deadline. This is likely to include:
o Real-time information management; clear filing, version control and communication
o Tracking progress against agreed actions; following up with reminders
o Using checklists to ensure all important steps are followed
o Facilitating adaptations to the proposal development plan
o Creating user-friendly templates and guidance
o Making arrangements for meetings
o Coordinating review processes.
• Provide practical administrative support to proposal development and stakeholder relationship-building, including:
o Online research about donor / geography / technical area / partners / competitors
o Formatting, proof-reading and/or editing to fit prescribed word / character limits
o Creation of tables, graphics, references from supplied data
o Checking compliance against donor requirements
o Arranging, recording and following up on meetings.
• Data management: Update and maintain Project Management System ‘Global Online’ with information relating to funding proposals, projects, donors and consortium partners (both current and prospective) – everything required prior to handover to Programme Management team for donor contract negotiations.
• Support efficiency and effectiveness of the Programme Funding Team through continual maintenance of and improvements to Programme Funding systems and processes, e.g. updating a proposal resource library.
• Manage provision of compliance information for due diligence processes and proposals as required by donors or consortium leads. Provide this service for other CBM UK teams as well as for the Programme Funding team, as required.
• Carry out other duties as required by the Head of Programme Funding, including support for internal reporting.
Programme Development (PD) Department support (20-25%)
• Make arrangements for events such as internal and external meetings (including recording actions / minutes, and providing for any accessibility requirements), training courses and team building, regular learning sessions, team travel (including bookings and expenses) and occasional international workshops (mostly online).
• Lead on knowledge management for Programme Development (PD) Department including updating PD Handbook and maintaining MS Teams site.
• Support the Director of Programme Impact and Head of Programmes with internal reporting processes; sourcing and collating information.
• Facilitate responses to enquiries about CBM programmes from the public or other teams, and facilitate communication with other CBM UK departments.
• Carry out other duties as required by the Director of Programme Impact, or Head of Programmes, including providing ‘surge support’ to Programme Managers. This could include:
o Practical support for adaptation to new or improved systems / processes
o Preparing materials for presentations or papers for meetings
o Collating information for annual budgeting or project portfolio allocations

What Skills and Experience do you need?

- Ensure robust HR policies, practices, and compliance with employment legislation.
- Manage recruitment processes and promote the Abbey's employer brand to attract top talent.
- Develop a volunteer engagement strategy, enhancing their experience and alignment with the Abbey's values.
- Drive improvements in health and safety practices and lead safeguarding adherence.
- Shape organisational development strategies and promote learning and leadership.
- Enhance internal communications and employee engagement across the Abbey community.
What We're Looking For:
- A degree and MCIPD/FCIPD qualification (or equivalent).
- Proven experience as an HR leader in a high-profile, service-orientated environment.
- Strong knowledge of employment law, safeguarding, and performance management.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to inspire and lead a team.
- A commitment to the Abbey's mission, values, and Christian ethos.
- Strategic thinking, discretion, and the ability to work under pressure.
