• Strategic partners within the local authority and NHS Trust
• Staff across all Rethink Advocacy services

Job Title: Fundraising Manager
Salary: £38K -£40K
Location: Remote
Reports To: Founder / CEO
Job Type: Part-Time 20hrs/w (Full-Time for the right candidate)
Closing date: 25 October 2024
About Us: Thank you for your interest in our Fundraising Manager role. We seek a senior, experienced international fundraising manager to grow support from individuals, major gifts, trusts and legacy pledgers primarily in the UK, but also for the ROLDA globally.
ROLDA (Romanian League in Defence of Animals) is a small animal welfare charity working to improve the lives of dogs, cats, and other animals in Romania and internationally. Since its establishment in 2006, ROLDA has become a beacon of hope for the millions of vulnerable stray animals in Romania – one of Europe's economically poorest nations. Our mission is to manage the homeless animal population, estimated to be millions, through six key focuses: rescue, rehabilitation, sheltering, sterilisation, and education. Within our shelters, inspired by British kennel design and maintained to meet EU animal welfare standards, we can house up to 700 stray dogs at a time. Here, they receive complete veterinary care, rehabilitation, and preparation for rehoming. Since 2006, we have helped over 48,000 animals (primarily dogs and cats) and built two shelters for dogs and one for disabled and senior cats. We also distribute support, primarily through small grants, to six other charities in Romania and over 40 shelters in Ukraine. We rehome mainly in Switzerland, Sweden, and the UK. In addition to our efforts in rescuing and rehoming animals, ROLDA tackles the root cause of Romania's homeless animals through comprehensive neutering programmes and educational initiatives. Since 2006, we have successfully neutered nearly 20,000 cats and dogs, significantly impacting Romania's severe overpopulation of animals.

Though it took Sadie years to admit this to Sam, Marx did prove incredibly useful that summer. No, Marx wasn’t a game designer. He wasn’t an ace programmer, like Sadie, and he couldn’t draw, like Sam. But he did almost everything else for them, and his contributions ranged from the pedestrian, but necessary, to the creatively essential. Marx organised workflow, so Sadie and Sam were more aware of what the other was doing and what they needed to be doing. He made long lists of supplies they would need. He was more than liberal with his credit card—they always needed more memory and storage, and they were regularly burning out graphics cards—and he must have made fifty trips to the large computer store in Central Square that summer. He opened a bank account, and an LLC, Go, Ichigo, Go. He arranged for them to pay taxes (which saved them money in the short term by making their business purchases tax-free), and if, at some point, they needed to hire people, which he knew they would, he set them up for that, too. He made sure everyone ate, hydrated, and slept (at least a little), and he kept their workspaces clean and free of chaos.
The Operations team provides operational support to AIM (e.g., human resource management, finance, productivity). The team also supports our incubated charities, assisting with their initial set-up after the program so they can hit the ground running, as well as ongoing ad-hoc requests and advice as needed. Added to this, Operations supports other participants in programs run by AIM(e.g., people completing fellowships with our research team). While this is less than for the Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program, it increases as these programs mature.
Our Operations team currently consists of ~2.8 FTE – our Chief Operating Officer (previous Managing Director and CTO of Founders Pledge), our Director of Operations (with a mixed background in legal services, management consulting, and scale-up operations), and a Senior Operations Manager (with a background in risk and security management in low- and middle-income countries). The team also relies on external contractors for some of its functions (e.g., bookkeeping, legal advice).
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
The exact % split might vary throughout 2025 depending on AIM’s program strategy and number of programs after our yearly evaluation
Employee experience
-
Supporting the development and implementation of HR initiatives and systems
-
Providing advice on policies and procedures
-
Assisting in performance management processes
-
Supporting the management of disciplinary and grievance issues
-
Maintaining employee records according to policy and legal requirements
-
Reviewing employment and working conditions to ensure legal compliance
Grants and compliance management support
-
Support with processing almost £2M in grants per year for seed grants and other funding circles etc.
-
Maintain grant tracking systems and ensure accurate reporting
-
Ensure legal and regulatory compliance, particularly in the UK
-
Support risk management initiatives, including cybersecurity
-
Improve grants-related processes and procedures for efficiency
Event logistics
-
Organising internal and external events like our Christmas party, retreats, and community co-working days; contingency planning, determining objectives and conducting post-mortems
-
Assisting the Recruitment team with logistics needs (e.g., booking travel and accommodation, getting materials to venues)
Automating workflows and building internal tools
-
Identifying opportunities to systematise or automate processes with a view to increasing efficiency
-
Responding to internal calls for greater systematisation (e.g. “we need a CRM”), mapping out costs and benefits
-
Leveraging spreadsheets, no-code and low-code tools to build internal systems
-
Maintaining internal systems and refining based on quick feedback loops and user feedback.
Overseeing our facilities management
- For our London office and residential accommodation, we are managing an external service provider tasked with the regular upkeep and operation of these facilities. There is some chance that the functions performed by this external service provider are brought in-house, but at the moment we expect this function to remain outsourced and for the Operations Manager to play an overseeing role.
Ad hoc tasks
- We believe that the above describes the key buckets, but in essence, the Operations team tends to step in and be needed wherever their help is cost-effective to solve or prevent problems
FUTURE GROWTH TRAJECTORIES
Future growth trajectories for excelling hires could look like:
-
As an entry-level role, you’d have the opportunity to advance to Senior Operations Manager and eventually Director of Operations (although the latter would depend on a vacancy being available)
-
There would be room for specialising in a specific area of Operations, such as HR or finance
-
As part of your professional development, we could explore more technical routes such as investing in coding or no-code training
EXAMPLE OF THE WORK YOU'LL BE DOING
-
After an initial brief, independently organise the entire lifecycle of an event at our office expecting between ~15-50 people to attend. You would know the goal of the event, some parameters like the budget, and would have some light assistance from other staff or external partners with whom we’re co-hosting the event.
-
Effectively acting as an office manager/all-rounder for AIM’s London office. This means overseeing day-to-day operations to ensure smooth functioning, including managing office supplies, coordinating with service providers and contractors, and promptly triaging and resolving issues as they arise. Additionally, it means implementing and improving office policies, such as policies around hotdesking, inviting and vetting guests, meeting room usage, etc.
-
After supporting another department with their work, you realise that a series of manual steps they take could be made much more efficient by creating an automated workflow using Airtable and Zapier. You follow a user-centred design process to collect information about requirements, must-haves and nice-to-haves and then build a prototype to later test and refine.
-
Entirely oversee our managed accommodation for staff and program participants, responding to booking requests and changes, ensuring seamless check-in and check-out procedures, and promptly responding to requests or issues.
-
Knowing AIM’s internal policies and ensuring they’re being followed. For example, reviewing expenditure at the end of the month and checking adherence to our Financial Controls Policy, touching base with staff to check whether they have a professional development plan in place.
ABOUT YOU
This role will likely suit an early to mid-level operations generalist, but we’re also very interested in hearing from more senior operations specialists as there is room for future growth in responsibilities within the organisation depending on competency and expertise. We would also be keen for talented recent graduates applying for this position as many areas of responsibility can be learned by a quick learner fairly fast.
We expect excellent candidates will meet many (but not all) of the criteria below. We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet all of the listed characteristics. In the past, we've offered positions to applicants who demonstrated strong overall potential, providing training to address skill gaps. We prioritise high general ability, a strong work ethic, and alignment with our values, methods, and approach to maximising global impact over specific prior work experience or backgrounds. We sketch a picture of potential ideal candidates to give a more concrete sense of what particularly strong candidates might look like, not to discourage interested readers from applying.

-
Is a highly organised, conscientious person and often relied upon to organise something (e.g., a holiday)
-
Leans towards frugal solutions (e.g., the second cheapest product), using 80/20 principles, and cheap tests / MVP testing over perfection where possible
-
Has had positive past experiences testing aspects of this role before (e.g., maybe they have organised an event from scratch before and both enjoyed it and had positive results)
-
Is thinking of their career trajectory as in operations management or closely related fields rather than as a stepping stone to a different career
-

Desirable specific skills and areas of experience include:
-

Our prior Program Manager has moved up to the role of Chief Programs Officer on our executive team. As such, we are looking for a deeply impact-motivated Program Manager to run our flagship Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program. In this role, you will train, advise, and pair exceptional potential founders through a twice-annual, two-month training program. This culminates in supporting the founders through a seed fundraising round and the launch of new charities delivering exceptionally cost-effective programs at scale across global development.
Our program has incubated more than 40 new charities over the past five years, with many receiving recognition from charity evaluators such as GiveWell and Animal Charity Evaluators as field-leading organisations.
IMPORTANT: This is a summarised version of the job advert for CharityJob's purposes. Clicking 'Apply' will take you to the complete and detailed version on our website, where you'll also be able to apply.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program is a twice-a-year intensive training program enabling cohorts of 8-16 exceptionally talented international entrepreneurs and nonprofit professionals to launch outstandingly cost-effective, evidence-based new nonprofits in the space of two months.
The program chiefly consists of a twice-annual sequence.
-
Preparing the upcoming cohort and running the initial book club where participants deep dive into our handbook and the recommended idea reports
-
The two-month program itself, which includes a 2+ week in-person section and consists of training and coaching participants to select co-founders and ideas
-
Post-program support to the new founders, providing ongoing guidance and facilitating connections with our networks of mentors and alumni.
-
Evaluation and improvement work for the program itself, and the post-program support and evaluation plus improvements period. In between, the team
The Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program team chiefly consists of ~two FTE preparing and running the program and interacting regularly with the recruitment team (for finding and selecting the ideal program candidates), the research team (for selecting and adapting the ideal charity ideas for the program participants), and the operations team (for supporting the incubated projects immediately upon launch through the program). This role reports to Samantha, our Chief Programs Officer, and works closely together with Steve, the second Program Manager who focuses mostly on participant training and coaching.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
The exact %s of these will depend on what will be most impactful and the interests and skill areas of the successful candidate, but will likely look something like this:
Direct Program Management - 40%
-
During the preparation phase:
-
Clearly and proactively managing timelines and communications with internal staff, external partners, and program participants
-
Improving systems such that running the program becomes more efficient and effective round over round
-
-
During the program phase for 8 weeks twice a year (February to March and August to September):
-
Facilitating training sessions - discussions, presentations, workshops - with participantsbased on best practices
-
Providing key feedback on participant project work on short timelines, including on materials such as cost-effectiveness analyses, geographic assessments, theories of change, budgets, pilot plans etc.
-
Mentoring participants directly in 1:1 calls and chats
-
Guiding participants through two intense in-person weeks in our London office, including in their co-founder and charity idea testing and decisions
-
-
Towards the end and immediately following the program:
-
Helping participants develop our raw researched top nonprofit ideas into organisations ready to implement a first pilot within mere months of graduating
-
Advising participants on key decisions regarding their charity and providing encouragement and support to get their project proposals across the finish line in time for the seed network funding circle to award seed grants
-
Connecting graduates with suitable mentors from our network and identifying, engaging, and onboarding new mentors
-
Alumni/Community Management & Development - 40%
-

-
Creating opportunities for connection, collaboration, and cross-learning of our growing alumni and extended community
-
Managing a growing extended community of mentors, advisors, and service providers that could support our charities at different stages of their development (e.g., seed, pilot, scale-up, external evaluation)
-
Managing shared digital knowledge and communication bases like our resource hub and 300+ member slack community
-
Evaluating opportunities and focusing on the most impactful ones

-
Collecting and assessing feedback from participants and alumni

-
Brainstorming and deciding on solutions
-

-
-
Identifying priority gaps in program curriculum and structure based on M&E, proactive research, and later charity outcomes
-
Designing or adapting existing content, including applied projects, workshops, or written material, to support program goals
FUTURE GROWTH TRAJECTORIES
This is a senior role within AIM, but future growth and expertise development trajectories for excelling hires could look like:
-
Focusing on charity strategy development and advising: a hire with more experience and expertise in launching, piloting, and scaling could play a more active hand in revamping our content and mentoring charities on their strategies from the outset; i.e. advising closely on plans, giving more feedback on early project plans, mentoring directly post-program, etc.
-
Leaning into building out a thriving alumni ecosystem: optimising our post-program coordination, expanding our partnership work, spending more work on post-program content and community, coordinating our networks of alumni and mentors, creating digital/in-person events, and other strategies to help our charities and their staff reach & expand their potential
-
Becoming an expert in M&E: playing a heavier role in the impact assessment & optimisation of Charity Entrepreneurship as the key impact arm of AIM. This would involve more collaboration with our research and recruitment teams to improve our systems and feedback loops, and/or our M&E specialist working to create early internal evaluations of our charities and later external evaluations
-
(At some point) going through our Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program themselves as a participant, bringing all the built skills and expertise to bear in their own nonprofit
ABOUT YOU
The role is most suitable for a mid-level professional (3-5+ years of experience) with a background in running programs or nonprofit organisations. An ideal candidate may bring experience in launching and implementing new or early-stage programs or in conducting earlier stage intervention research or monitoring & evaluation work, particularly in LMIC contexts. You’ll be confident in putting together and assessing cashflows and financial appraisals and communicating your conclusions.
You’ll have great IT skills, especially with Excel, so that you can minimise the time you spend on bookkeeping and administrative tasks.
You will probably have experience of being the sole finance person or the most senior person in a small charity or SME. You will be excited about the thought of a role that involves both detail and strategic oversight.
You probably won’t have experience of every single issue that will come your way in this role but you’ll have a proven ability to research issues that are new to you and use your networks to come up with practical solutions.
Ideally you will have an interest in the arts, property or both. You will share our values – reliable, supportive, expert, pragmatic and invested.
You need to have the right to work in the UK.

Living Wage Foundation
The Living Wage Foundation was launched in 2011 by Citizens UK to tackle in-work poverty and ensure that workers earn enough to live on and participate in family and community life. Citizens UK is the home of community organising with diverse civil society alliances set up to develop leaders to work on the issues that matter to them, such as the Living Wage. Other projects include PACT (Parents and the Community Together) and Sponsor Refugees to add depth to the impact of Citizens UK’s work.
The Living Wage is a movement of businesses, organisations and people who believe that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. The real Living Wage is an independently-calculated hourly rate based on the cost of living and announced each November during Living Wage Week, our annual celebration of a growing network of almost 12,000 Living Wage Employers.
The Living Wage Foundation celebrates employers that voluntarily choose to pay the real Living Wage through an accreditation scheme that recognises a long-term commitment to fair pay and has secured pay rises for 400,000 low paid workers.
