The Child Brain Injury Trust was originally set up by a group of medical professionals. The organisation has evolved over the years and is now the leading UK organisation supporting families and professionals affected by childhood acquired brain injury. As Head of our Brain Injury Service, you will be joining the charity at an exciting time, as we have just launched our new five-year strategy – Elevating families, enriching futures. The strategy is our most exciting yet as we look to increase our reach and embed 4 key areas of support: early intervention (currently we work in  major trauma centres and specialist hospitals across the UK), community inclusion, educational services and virtual support. Although our programme delivery model is not  completely defined and embedded, we have a strong framework and a dedicated team who are eager and committed to our strategic goals. The purpose of this role is to provide overall strategic input, direction, development and operational management for the national brain Injury support service. To lead our whole brain injury service team to achieve the five-year strategy.

As well as exceptional leadership and management skills, you will need to enjoy developing and maintaining relationships with a large range of key stakeholders from the clinical, legal and corporate sectors.

Purpose of Role

The Fundraising Development Officer will play a pivotal role in advancing our organisation's mission by managing and delivering a range of projects within the Fundraising and PR portfolio. This newly established role is integral to ensuring that our fundraising and public relations efforts are executed with precision, impact, and in alignment with our strategic objectives.

As the Fundraising & PR Development Officer, you will be responsible for the end-to-end project management of specific initiatives, from initial planning and stakeholder engagement through to implementation, reporting, and analysis. Working closely with both internal teams and external partners, you will ensure that all projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standard.

In addition to your project management responsibilities, you will be instrumental in driving innovation and continuous improvement within our Fundraising and PR functions. By analysing project outcomes and gathering insights, you will help refine our approach, ensuring that we remain responsive to the needs of our audiences and the ever-evolving external environment.

Key responsibilities:

Project manage specific fundraising and / or communication projects in line with the FR&PR team annual plans, including all associated activity from planning, budget forecasting, delivery and monitoring and evaluation.  This could include projects across the supporter lifecycle (e.g. acquisition / retention / stewardship) and across a wide range of products and audiences (e.g. cash, regular giving, prizes, lottery, in-memory and in celebration giving, legacies, challenge events, community or schools fundraising, media relations and / or PR focussed stunts and initiatives).

Working with colleagues, develop clear and robust activity testing plans to generate actionable insight and learning.

Collaborate with and / or manage day-to-day relationships with internal and external partners to ensure successful delivery of agreed Fundraising or communication products or activities, maintaining accurate records and documentation. 

Work with colleagues to ensure audiences/relationships are segmented and stewarded effectively to maximise engagement and impact using the Customer Relationship Management system and the data we hold on our supporters as critical tools and information in your day to day work.

Participate in a wide-cross section of initiatives designed to raise awareness and funds in support of Comic Relief’s work.

Keep abreast of the fundraising marketplace to identify opportunities to enhance Comic Relief’s fundraising campaigns. 

Play an active role in the Fundraising Team, working collaboratively to enable inclusivity and diversity in order to drive high performance and an action-oriented culture, 

Play an active part in the development of annual plans and budgets, taking key learnings from previous activity and making recommendations to facilitate income growth. 

Person specification

Essential criteria

Proven knowledge and experience in a business to consumer direct marketing or digital marketing environment. 

Able to demonstrate competence in project management, with experience of end to end project delivery and autonomously managing own time to meet deadlines.

Experience of developing and implementing robust testing strategies, reporting back on performance data and making recommendations based on analysis

Understanding of relationship marketing; audience segmentation and targeting

Understanding of and experience of using a CRM system and related analysis or marketing tools

Excellent attention to detail

Excellent communication and numeracy skills, proficient in MS packages

Comfortable working independently and as part of a team, with effective stakeholder management experience

Able to demonstrate willingness to learn and develop in a fluid, high impact environment.

Previous experience in a fundraising focussed role

We have a fantastic opportunity to join our Animals in Science Department (ASD) and to play a key role in supporting and implementing the Society's work regarding animals used in research, testing and education. 

As Scientific and Policy Officer, your role will support the department with respect to furthering the implementation of the 3Rs (Replacement of animal experiments; the principal goal, Reduction and Refinement) and promoting robust ethical review of animal use, so this really is a key role within the team.

This is a hybrid working role, which will entail mainly home working with occasional travel to the Southern Regional Centre, Horsham or our London Hub, Blackfriars, as required. Also travel to external meetings, some of which would include overnight stays (UK/international).

What a day might look like for you

It's an exciting time to join us in the decade of our bicentenary as we focus on our Strategy to 2030. The RSPCA works 365 days a year, rescuing all animals of all types from abuse, neglect, and injury. 

Here's some of the key work you'll be doing: 

• Monitor, share and analyse policies, reports, news and announcements (including answers to Parliamentary Questions) from relevant bodies (such as the European Commission, Home Office and Department for Science, Innovation and Technology), proactively and on request, in order to help maintain the Animals in Science Department's knowledge base.
• Search for articles, research papers and general information relevant to the Department's work, to support the work of the scientific staff and maintain the Department's knowledge base regarding research animal welfare and use, ethics and the 3Rs.
• Undertake additional supporting tasks as required, such as helping to organise meetings; laying out and formatting publications; developing guidance and tools to enable further implementation of the 3Rs and robust ethical review of animal use, writing up meeting reports for publication.
• Work closely with the Digital Media team, providing and updating content for the RSPCA website relevant to the Society's work to help laboratory animals.
• Help produce content (eg. articles, infographics) for the public, members of animal ethics committees and other stakeholders, to inform these audiences of issues relating to animal research and testing and of the RSPCA's work in this area.
• Help promote the RSPCA's work for lab animals using a variety of communication channels including social media.
• To represent the RSPCA at relevant forums and give presentations at relevant meetings or workshops, internally and externally.

What makes a great Scientific and Policy Officer?

• MSc in a relevant subject or relevant BSc plus equivalent relevant experience.
• Awareness and understanding of the debate around animal experiments and the range of perspectives involved

• Experience of completing critical reviews of scientific literature and presenting summarised results.
• Excellent attention to detail.

• Good interpersonal and influencing skills, as this is a sensitive area.
