What we are looking for:

· Knowledge of the policy and political landscape developed from previous experience working in a policy or public affairs role, either in government, the civil service, charities, or non-governmental organisations.

· Proven experience developing and delivering public affairs strategies and leading influencing activities.

· Proven experience producing policy papers and applying policy research skills, such as evidence gathering, analysis and reporting.

· Proven experience as a strategic and analytic thinker who can influence policymakers with persuasive arguments, policy ideas and campaigns.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced policy and public affairs manager with a strong track record of creating policy solutions that drive real change. In this role you will work closely with the Head of Campaigns and Communications to drive the organisation’s influencing work across all 4 nations of the UK through policy development, public affairs activity, and developing and delivering issue-based campaigns that aim to make a real difference.

Endometriosis impacts the physical and mental health of 10% of women and those assigned female at birth, from puberty to menopause - although the impact can be felt for life. Yet it’s a disease most people have never heard of, do not understand, and that currently has no cure. Diagnosis time in the UK currently takes on average 8 years and 10 months, and UK non-cancer gynaecology waiting lists have now grown to more than 750,000. As the UK’s leading charity for all those affected by endometriosis, we’re determined to change this and ensure that everyone gets prompt diagnosis and the best treatment and support. About the role

You will

• Celebrate the achievements of brain injury survivors across the UK, promote the services that Headway UK offers and raise awareness of the prevalence of brain injury.
• Establish Headway as a leading voice in the area of brain injury, ensuring that relevant media outlets are presented with relevant information.

What you will do

• Obtain regular positive national and local media coverage for Headway
• Produce high-quality written materials for release to the media
• Communicate with and facilitate media coverage for independent Headway charities and volunteer-led branches, helping to raise their profiles locally
• Monitor and evaluate media coverage and PR activity to enable the effective tracking of the charity’s reputation.
• Be the first point of call for all media enquiries and take appropriate action
• Manage and cultivate relationships with local and national media.
• Liaise with the fundraising department and promote its initiatives in local and national media outlets.
• Source and interview individuals willing to share their personal experiences of brain injury & to draft personal testimonies and create a database of case studies ready to be used in reaction to relevant news stories.
• Assist in the production of Headway News and other regular communications
• Assist in the planning and execution of the national campaign for Action for Brain Injury Week and to assist in the implementation of additional campaigns throughout the year

Summary of the role:

The Policy, Advocacy & Public Affairs Officer is responsible for developing and implementing advocacy strategies that advance the organisation’s mission, influence public policy and help achieve strategic priorities. This role involves engaging with policy makers, building relationships with key stakeholders, researching and writing policy positions, planning advocacy campaigns and supporting public affairs initiatives. Location of work: London. Must be commutable for meetings at Westminster.The role may involve some infrequent travel throughout England and Scotland.

BACKGROUND 

The latest research suggesting that the number of children and young people at risk of hunger has rocketed to 2.7 million* means that one in five children don't have enough to eat.  When a child is too hungry to learn, when they’re aching for something to eat, they can’t concentrate. They can’t absorb information. Big feelings and worries can be impossible to control. They fall behind in their studies.  

Magic Breakfast provide a nutritious and filling breakfast to over 200,000 children and young people every school day. We work with schools in areas of high disadvantage, helping staff target the children most in need without barrier or stigma.  Magic Breakfast are ambitious to grow our impact to remove hunger as a barrier to learning for all children and young people in the UK. 

The new UK government’s Children’s Wellbeing Bill outlined in the King’s Speech, includes a requirement for free school breakfast clubs in every English primary school. This is a fantastic start towards ending child morning hunger. Magic Breakfast’s influence will be instrumental to ensuring school breakfasts are introduced in a way that is hunger-focused and barrier free. In 2021, the Scottish Government, pledged a not yet enacted promise to provide breakfast to primary children. 

Thousands of secondary school children are at risk of losing their free school breakfasts from September next year. For many of these students, this is their only opportunity to have a nutritious meal before facing a demanding school day, including taking exams. 

Solutions across all UK nations are currently either not yet actioned or are severely underserving the current need. Being part of the work of Magic Breakfast is your chance, together with parents, teachers and people across the UK, to demonstrate the power of school breakfasts and to shape the way forward to end morning hunger for good.

JOB PURPOSE 

Magic Breakfast’s mission is to end child morning hunger in the UK now and for good. The role of the Policy and Public Affairs Manager is to support us to deliver on this mission through influencing governments to address child morning hunger and the underlying systemic causes, in order to give every child the opportunity to reach their full potential. 

The Policy and Public Affairs Manager will play a pivotal role in shaping policy initiatives and influencing decision makers across Westminster and Whitehall. Specifically, you will help ensure the new Early Adopters Programme – the government’s pilot breakfast scheme in England – is hunger-focused and puts children and young people at its centre. This in turn, will inform the national rollout of primary school breakfast provision across England from September 2026 – a policy which you will also work to influence. In tandem, you will be responsible for informing and shaping how breakfast is included and positioned in the Children’s Wellbeing Bill.

More widely, you will keep abreast of political developments relevant to Magic Breakfast, identifying opportunities to respond, influence and shape the debate. You will be able to put complex policy ideas across in simple and effective terms both in person and through reports and briefings.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop and lead Magic Breakfast’s influencing strategy to shape and inform school breakfasts within the Children’s Wellbeing Bill 

• Engage thoroughly in the legislative process to shape how breakfast is positioned, to ensure the law protects and supports children and young people at risk of hunger 

• Influence and shape the scope of the Early Adopter’s Programme to inform long-term school breakfast policy across England 

• Work with ministers, politicians, civil servants and advisors to help shape the national rollout of school breakfasts across England 

• Identify and produce high-quality evidence-based responses to new policy developments, sector reports and consultations from Government, advisory bodies, other political parties and membership organisations 

• Proactively monitor and track policy developments, and ensure internal understanding and alignment on issues and opportunities 

• Lead the dissemination of Magic Breakfast policy briefings and research reports to key political stakeholders 

• Organise and lead key influencing events to influence and inform decision-makers

PERSON SPECIFICATION 

• Experience of policy development and influencing

At this pivotal time for 38 Degrees, an exciting opportunity has arisen to manage our Public Affairs & Media offering. We’re looking for an effective communicator, who is great at collaborating and has a track record of delivering significant media and public affairs campaign results. You’ll bring to life and manage the implementation of 38 Degrees’ media and public affairs strategy, in service of 38 Degrees’ mission: to make our country fairer, more respectful and sustainable. As we adjust to a shift in our political environment, this brand new role will relentlessly and powerfully amplify 38 Degrees campaigns and the voices of our supporters to the general public, the media and decision makers in the UK.

You’ll manage our Public Affairs & Media team, including a new Public Affairs & Media officer role – working together, and with colleagues across the campaigns team and beyond,  to execute our Public Affairs & Media strategy and deliver impressive results. Whilst this is a Manager role, it’s also a very hands on role – you’ll be as at home picking up the phone to regional TV to discuss local supporters whose experiences could make perfect case studies for the big story of the day, and helping those people tell their story, as you are meeting with MPs and their staff to use our Campaigns By You platform to run campaigns on local issues in their constituencies.

Your background and experience

We’re looking for someone who can effectively grasp the 38 Degrees approach to public affairs, which combines pressure and persuasion – and who is confident in pursuing both. You will be able to show you can use both, in the right circumstances: from liaising with Metro Mayors on possible partnership campaigns, to commissioning and landing coverage of snap polling that demonstrates public opinion on government plans. The person recruited will need to be a brilliant communicator, and be passionate about opening up democracy and making political and corporate change accessible to all.

You’ll be a great fit for this role if you have excellent political and news judgement – you know what can make a story and what impact that story can have on decision makers.

You’ll be extremely comfortable speaking to politicians and their teams, along with journalists, other communications teams in partner organisations, and 38 Degrees supporters who act as case studies in our campaigns. You may already have extensive journalist or political networks and relationships, and you’ll have definitely had results. We’re looking for a person who knows the political and news agenda each day, and can help set it too.

You’ll be equipped with the skills to develop a new team, with the skills and experience to manage more junior members of staff, setting clear, inspiring and exciting shared goals.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need to be a positive, practical person adept at building cross-team relationships,  bringing people with you  to solve problems in a collaborative way.

Working alongside the Public Affairs & Media Manager, and with colleagues across the campaigns team and beyond you’ll spend every day trying to shine a light on the actions our supporters take on campaigns they care about. Your background and experience

You’ll have a proven track record of great political and news judgement, and have played a key role in using these skills in a campaigning environment to deliver powerful campaigns that deliver impactful media and public affairs results. That could be from working in a press office or media environment, to working with (or for) a politician. It’s possible you are more experienced at either media work or public affairs work – but either way, you’ll know what it takes to use both to influence decision makers and land a big news story. The Policy and Public Affairs Intern is an exciting opportunity at The College as you will provide a wide range of policy, research, communications and administrative support for the RCPCH Scotland team, helping to promote public awareness of the RCPCH and core child health priorities.

As Policy and Public Affairs Intern you will support the development of policy positions unique to Scotland and assist in drafting responses to Scottish Government consultations and parliamentary inquiries, whilst also providing ad hoc administrative support to the wider the Devolved Nations Team.

Skills and experience

Efficient, effective and empathetic, the right candidate will have a strong analytical ability that they can convey both verbally and in writing. You will have excellent writing skills, and experience of drafting important documents to a high level. You will also have experience of dealing sensitively and professionally with people from a range of backgrounds. Complaints Officers are trusted with a high level of autonomy in their work – so demonstrable time management and organisational skills are required.

A personal interest in current affairs and the news industry is a must, but there is no need for a degree or qualification in this area.

There is a competitive starting salary of £40k, plus another £2k after 24 months of service. The Media and Engagement Officer is an exciting and crucial new role suited to a natural storyteller who thrives in a fast-paced and collaborative environment. This role will support the way we communicate with communities across South and East Kent by gathering, creating and sharing stories in engaging and creative ways, whilst also handling media enquiries on behalf of the Diocese.

Reporting to the Senior Media and Engagement Officer and working closely with the team, you will play a key role in the execution of the communications and engagement strategy for our diocese and help to enhance our digital profile by creating informative, engaging and inspiring content to all our audiences.

You should be creative, detail-oriented, proactive in spotting trends and have a good awareness of current affairs, as well as having experience of editing, proofreading and fact-checking copy.

Experienced in managing and improving websites and social media platforms, you will be at ease analysing social media performance and capable of helping to implement the social media strategy, ensuring we connect and engage with audiences from a range of backgrounds.

Job Details

In 2024, someone dies of Tuberculosis (TB) every 20 seconds. TB is the world’s deadliest infectious disease and yet very few people know it still exists. Worse still, it is entirely treatable and curable, yet each year 1.5 million people die of TB. The world’s failure to adequately address TB and other diseases of poverty is due in large part to a lack of political will. 

The Parliamentary Advocacy Officer will lead the TB portfolio within the Parliamentary Advocacy Team, working alongside a Policy Officer to deliver meaningful and impactful advocacy to UK politicians and other key stakeholders to end the TB epidemic. Reporting to the Parliamentary Advocacy Manager, the post-holder will also support the wider work of the Parliamentary Team on a cross-cutting approach to parliamentary advocacy. 

The Parliamentary Officer will provide the Secretariat for Parliament’s All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Tuberculosis, which works primarily through the UK parliament to push the government to improve its policies on TB and devote more resources to tackling the epidemic. The post-holder will also assume a key role in the UK Academics and Professionals Against TB (UKAPTB) network - an advocacy group of UK-based doctors, nurses, researchers and others working to eradicate TB. 

Key responsibilities​

Parliamentary advocacy

• Working with the Head of Parliamentary Advocacy and others in the organisation to develop and implement a high impact and politically astute advocacy strategy for tuberculosis.

• Contribute to the development of Results’ overarching parliamentary advocacy strategy, working closely with the Head of Parliamentary Advocacy and other members of the team, aiming to identify, educate, and ask for action while supporting Parliamentarians to take action that will lead to meeting our goals and objectives.

• Lead on the parliamentary work on tuberculosis for Results UK, by building and strengthening relationships with MPs and Peers that result in them championing the end of poverty, specifically in taking action on tuberculosis, and building support for research and development around tuberculosis.

• Provide the secretariat function to the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Tuberculosis. The APPG secretariat/coordinator function includes guiding the Group’s work programme and activities, arranging meetings and events, corresponding with the APPG Officers and Members, briefing MPs and Peers to ask questions or speak in parliamentary debates and representing the Group externally, for example with the Global Fund, the Stop TB Partnership and others.

• Lead the planning, delivery and evaluation of Parliamentary Delegations to implementing countries and advocacy tours to the UK, working with the relevant Policy Advocacy Officer and others in the Parliamentary Team.

• Work closely with the Grassroots Advocacy Team to ensure parliamentary and grassroots campaigning activity is coordinated and the greatest impact is achieved between the relationships our grassroots campaigners build with their local MPs, and the work led from the office to support MPs in Parliament.

• Ensure our parliamentary advocacy and relationships always remain non-partisan and cross-party, in line with our charitable aims and objectives.

Partners and coalitions

• Liaise with other global Results organisations, the ACTION Global Health Advocacy Partnership Secretariat and other ACTION partners to coordinate our parliamentary advocacy at a global level.

• Work closely with civil society and other partner organisations and allies in the UK to coordinate parliamentary advocacy in the UK.

• Represent Results UK in global coalitions and consortia relevant to your lead issue area, such as the Global Fund CSO Working Group, as agreed with the Head of Parliamentary Advocacy.

• Identify and develop new partnerships in line with our new strategy and the focus on equity. 

Communications and media

• Where capacity allows, identify media opportunities and support media activity (including traditional and social media) related to nutrition.

• Contribute content to Results UK’s website, blog and social media to help achieve our organisational objectives and strengthen our brand presence. 

• Publicise the APPG's activities, primarily through its website and twitter account. 

• Represent Results at external meetings and events in relation to  advocacy around tuberculosis. 

Organisational Development

• Carry out effective monitoring, evaluation and learning of your work, recording activity and outcomes that enables Results UK to measure its success, in addition to measuring the impact of your activities towards these outcomes.

• Be a key part of Results UK’s organisational development by participating in strategic discussions, evaluations, sharing your experience and ideas, and working flexibly to support other staff as required.

• Actively develop and support funding ideas to help appropriately expand Results UK’s portfolio in close collaboration with the Head of Parliamentary Advocacy and the Operations team.

This role is ideal for someone with public affairs or political advocacy experience, preferably in the UK, who understands the way that political decisions impact global poverty and wants to influence these decisions. A strong understanding of and passion for global health issues, particularly those that relate infectious diseases. Equally important is a proven ability to quickly gain an understanding of a complex new area and translate it into succinct, clear, achievable recommendations. 

This post will provide excellent opportunities for leading parliamentary advocacy to deliver real change in funding and policy outcomes on tuberculosis and other issues; for building and deploying a strong understanding of key international development issues; and experience of working directly with UK parliamentarians and other actors across the international development sector.

Essential criteria

• At least one year of experience in a substantial parliamentary or public affairs role with demonstrable success in managing relationships with parliamentarians from different parties.

• Understanding of the UK Parliament (including the roles of MPs and Peers; the range of activity parliamentarians can undertake in parliament to influence Government policy; the role of APPGs; Select Committees).

• A good understanding of international development issues and in particular, the need for approaches based in equity and partnership.

• An ability to learn quickly about new development issues and clearly convey this information to others.

• An ability to write clearly and succinctly, for a range of audiences, from lengthy formal submissions to short articles or blogs, including experience of media work;

• Experience in representing organisations, networking, and working in coalitions.

• Excellent English writing skills with an ability to write clearly and succinctly for a range of audiences.

• Strong interpersonal skills, able to build rapport with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

• Good understanding of carrying out effective Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL), for advocacy work. 

Desirable

• Experience working in international development.

• Experience of working with campaigners and advocates.

• Experience of working with the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

• Experience of managing activity budgets.

• Experience of planning and hosting online and in person advocacy events.
