The impact of cancer on young lives is more than medical. That’s why we exist. Our specialist social workers help children and young people with cancer and their families navigate the emotional and practical impact of cancer. We remove barriers, solve problems and prioritise wellbeing. And we stop at nothing to make sure they get the right care and support at the right time.
We challenge the systems and policies that surround children and young people, we highlight gaps and campaign for change. Because we know what a better future could look like. And we know what we need to do to make that future a reality. We need to push harder, reach further and work smarter. And we need the right people on our team to help us get there. People like you.
About the role
We’re looking for an Individual Giving Officer with direct marketing experience to join our Individual Giving team.
It’s an exciting time to join the Individual Giving team as we develop an exciting programme of engaging mass marketing activities aimed at achieving substantial growth in the short to medium term. Recruiting new donors and building relationships with them is key to ensuring we can generate reliable income to help children and young people living with a cancer diagnosis as well as their families. We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Individual Giving Officer to support the two Individual Giving Managers and to manage a range of campaigns.
The Individual Giving Officer will work across different retention and acquisition areas, including appeals, newsletters, Face to Face recruitment and Payroll Giving. The role will suit a passionate, organised and creative individual who thrives on working collaboratively and who is able to manage end to end projects and supplier relationships. There will be a need to analyse data to monitor performance as well as identifying trends and opportunities.
What will I be doing?
No two days are the same at Young Lives vs Cancer. So, summarising your ‘day to day’ isn’t easy. Here are some of the main things you’ll be doing, but you’ll find more details in the job description.
- Help manage the Individual Giving programme by managing campaigns from concept to implementation. Ensuring that campaigns are delivered on time and to budgets, which meet our financial targets. Ensure that all activity works effectively as part of our overall Individual Giving strategy.
- Work with agencies and suppliers to deliver agreed plans and campaigns; including creative agencies, printers, media buyers, telemarketing agencies and external agencies used for Payroll Giving and other recruitment methods.
- Work with our Insight Team to brief and manage data selections to ensure optimal segmentation and selections of our audiences.
- Monitor results and, based on these, innovate and make changes to plans throughout the year to ensure annual budgets are achieved.
- Liaise with our Operations team to ensure campaigns run smoothly and that income and inbound data is carefully managed.
- Work with the Individual Giving Managers and the Finance Team to provide financial commentary and forecasts as required.
- Research the charity market to identify trends, opportunities and threats within the sector and how they could impact Young Lives vs Cancer, including competitor analysis and research.
What do I need?
The key skills we’re looking for in this role are:
- Proven experience of managing successful Individual Giving or similar campaigns across all channels, including print and digital.
- Experience of project management and reporting, with good organisational skills.
- Experience of managing external agencies and suppliers, with a good level of tact, diplomacy and patience.
- Experience of implementing marketing plans, along with ability to analyse data and then to use this information to improve performance.
- Experience of budgeting and forecasting, with strong planning and financial management skills.
- Proactive, with ability to work under own initiative and problem solve as well as multi-task, manage time effectively and work to deadlines.
- Good at working effectively in a team.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with excellent attention to detail.
What will I gain?
For people to reach their full potential, they need the right environment. As a member of Team Young Lives, you’ll be made to feel supported, valued and appreciated. Here’s how we do it:
- Wellbeing days: four days a year to do what works for you – from catching up on training to going for a walk
- Generous annual leave allowance

- Enhanced pension
- Access to our employee savings scheme

Our commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging
At Young Lives vs Cancer, we recognise that opportunities for too many people remain a condition of their sex, ethnicity, class, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation – or a combination. This has never been acceptable to us as an organisation. We don’t just accept difference, we value it, celebrate it, nurture it and we thrive because of it.
We’re on a journey to be reflective of the diverse children, young people and families we support. We know we aren’t there yet, and we’re passionately committed to taking actions and making changes to be a truly diverse, inclusive and equitable organisation. This includes taking anti-oppressive action and removing barriers in our recruitment practices. We particularly welcome applications from members of minoritised communities. Our Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Belonging strategy will tell you more.
We operate an anonymised shortlisting process in our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. Whilst managing the team in the daily tasks you will also work to strengthen relationships with external agencies, local authorities and agree a strategic vision for the future of the project in line with your line manager (Head of Delivery & Training). There will be a budget to adhere to and goals set in terms of void expectation and tenant finances, additionally every member of the team has annual objectives which seek to give clarity and motivation to their role.
Each home is partnered with a local church who provide love and friendship for the tenants that you will also support. A part of the Team Lead’s role is to actively engage with the church and empower your team to do likewise. The role includes training, equipping, and encouraging staff to extol professional excellence and spiritual passion whilst also supporting church volunteers in their role as befrienders to the tenants.
Our tenants will have experienced homelessness and present with a variety of support needs. You, your team and your church partners will work together to empower every individual tenant to reach their full potential, take responsibility and step bolder into a brighter future where they’re confident and able to advocate for themselves and ensure they live the life they deserve.
About you
You will be passionate about our work with the homeless and share our values. You will be able to work with members of the public, professional bodies and churches. You will need to be able to work with tenants with support needs, from a wide range of backgrounds.

We love diversity and we value your unique skills, strengths, knowledge, and experience. Becoming one of our team may realise your potential, helping us to raise our performance in empowering those we serve.
About us
Peterborough was where Hope into Action began back in 2011. We are at the forefront of providing excellent quality supported accommodation to those that need it most in the city. Partnering with 11 churches, we currently have 17 homes each serving different demographics.
We provide not just shelter and housing but also the friendship and community of a church. Together with 100 churches, Hope into Action UK provide direct support to people whom others have often given up on. Our first home had a real heart for men coming out of prison, but homes are now available for a wide range of people experiencing homelessness: people in recovery from addiction, people sleeping rough, women and children fleeing domestic violence, people coming out of rehab, former prostitutes, refugees, those suffering mental health issues and survivors of human trafficking.
We encourage others to use our model by franchising the idea. Our vision is for every church to lovingly provide the homeless with a home. The tragedy of homelessness is in every community. We believe that with our help, every church can do something about it.
