About the role
Ever wondered what it means to work at a grassroots organisation, working hard to fight poverty in the community? Well, this is your chance. We have a unique and exciting opportunity for someone interested in gaining first-hand experience working on the frontlines of a fast-paced, guest-facing charity.
Sufra has always been #MoreThanAFoodbank, and this role is key to Sufra’s journey in trialling different methods of supporting residents. We are partnering with SALIENT, a team of researchers who are working with the public, partners from local and national government, food charities, community support teams, and the food industry on a range of food-related trials. In particular, they will be conducting a trial at Sufra where a range of different support is offered to Food Bank guests. The aim of the trial is to assess the impact of these different methods, and hopefully come closer to learning what support our guests prefer to receive from our food bank service.
The ideal candidate will work well in a busy environment and will have great people skills. They will have some experience in a customer-facing role, dealing with the public and potentially vulnerable individuals. The successful candidate will be the first point of contact for members that register with the pilot project and will be confident answering queries confidently speaking about the trial. The candidate will work closely with the Food Aid Manager and SALIENT researchers to ensure accurate data tracking once participants are registered, including collating receipts, supporting with feedback interviews, capturing case studies and logging visits. The role will also include supporting the distribution of both parcels and vouchers and ensuring meticulous financial records of this are kept.
People skills are crucial to success in this role, as the successful candidate will be working alongside a range of people, ensuring that they are supported throughout the trial. Due to the diverse nature of Sufra guests, it would be beneficial for this candidate to speak Arabic, Somali, Farsi, or another community language.
This is an immensely rewarding role working in a dynamic charity built on an ethos of sharing, hospitality and inclusivity. Through your activities, you will be able to convey the charity’s passion and commitment to supporting vulnerable people and demonstrate the impact of our interventions in transforming the lives of beneficiaries. There will be training provided by both Sufra and the SALIENT team before the successful candidates starts leading on this exciting project.
We would encourage applications from local residents, with knowledge of the London Borough of Brent to apply.

About RLS
RLS is a UK charity and a non-profit company in Greece (AMKE).
Refugee Legal Support works in solidarity with people who migrate. We operate in the UK, France and Greece, promoting and protecting rights through legal support, casework, litigation, engagement, training and partnerships. We advocate for safe migration and oppose discriminatory immigration systems and policies.
RLS has held a legal aid contract in the UK since 2023.
About the Afghan Pro Bono Initiative (APBI)
The Afghan Pro Bono Initiative is a specialist casework project delivered by RLS with funding and pro bono assistance from 14 leading commercial law firms. It is a project delivered in partnership with SPI.
Firm pro bono lawyers are trained and supervised by the project’s two full-time supervising lawyers so that they can then assist with legal casework.
APBI has two core components. The team delivers legal information and support to and within the Afghan community, working together with the Community Engagement and Research Lead to ensure wide access. While the project also provides high quality legal representation in a range of cases for this community. This includes family reunion, the ARAP scheme, the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme and others.
APBI then aims to respond to the increased need for legal information, advice and representation of Afghan nationals and their family members forced to seek protection and reunion with family in the United Kingdom following the Taliban takeover. The project is now going into its 3rd year, and won the Most Effective Pro Bono Partnership Award at the Law Works Pro Bono Awards in 2022 as well as being nominated and commended for numerous other awards in 2022 and 2023.

Litigation arising out of the project is actively pursued (where eligible) under RLS’s legal aid contract to push for better decision-making, secure results for individuals and pursue improvements in the relevant law, policy and practices.

Not familiar with the term working class?
No problem, lots of people aren't. It means different things to different people but for us at RECLAIM being working-class is characterised by a few key factors:
-
You're on, or grew up on, a low income with limited access to wealth.
-
You don't have many family connections to people with well paid, professional or powerful jobs.
-
You find it harder to 'fit in' in middle-class spaces, interests and conversations.
-
You're proud of your background and want people to see it as a strength, not a weakness
While working-class people have many of these things in common, we're a diverse bunch too. Working-class people are white, black and brown, LGBT+, disabled, recent migrants or refugees or from families who can trace their roots in the UK back generations, of various religions or none, women, men and non-binary. We're many things but we share the experience of growing up facing those four factors above.
At RECLAIM we don't mind if people publicly identify as working-class or not, that's completely up to them.
You don’t need to be working-class to do this role or work at RECLAIM. Our work has always involved brilliant working-class allies. We do, though, especially encourage applications from people with direct experience of being marginalised by class and/or some other factor as we work to ensure our staff team is diverse as the young people we are here to support.
To apply:
Please send a CV and cover letter outlining how you meet the person specification via Charity Job application link.
The closing date for applications is Sunday 7th July 2024 at 10pm.
If you have questions or would like an informal conversation about the role, please contact us through our website.
First interviews (online) are scheduled to take place on Wednesday 10th July 2024.
We reserve the right to close this vacancy early if we receive sufficient applications for the role.
Unfortunately due to being a very small team, we are unable to notify or offer feedback to unsuccessful applicants in the initial stages. If you have not heard from us by Tuesday 9th July then it is likely that your application has been unsuccessful. We thank you for your interest in working for RECLAIM.
We build knowledge, power, community and solidarity with working-class young people to campaign on the issues that affect them the most.
