Job description

Do you have a warm heart and personable nature? Are you as comfortable sitting quietly with someone who may not want to talk as you are chatting with a room full of people or joining in a board game or activity? Join us as a Volunteer Companion at Skanda Vale Hospice and you’ll be offering a compassionate presence and a safe space in which patients can talk about their wellbeing, share concerns, or simply enjoy friendly conversation.

About Skanda Vale Hospice

Skanda Vale Hospice offers unhurried, highly individualised care and respite to families affected by life-limiting illnesses, completely free of charge. A beautiful and happy place, filled with laughter and vibrant colour, our hospice is nurse led and primarily run by volunteers. Volunteering with us means being a valued part of a dedicated team who give of themselves wholeheartedly. Compassion is at the heart of what we do, expressed by human kindness, generosity and a deep commitment to the well-being of everyone we care for and work alongside.

What will I be doing?

  • Providing the reassurance of company, a listening ear and understanding during difficult times.

  • Being attentive to the well-being of patients and their loved ones.

  • Supporting patients with activities they enjoy, like reading, playing games, or going for walks in our beautiful garden.

  • Making drinks or small snacks and helping with tasks such as laying tables and serving meals.

  • Flagging up any concerns to the Nursing Team or Companion Lead.

  • Keeping appropriate boundaries.

How much time should I give?

An average of one day a month (which is flexible based on volunteer availability and hospice needs).

What are the benefits of being a Volunteer Companion?

  • Meeting new people and building relationships.

  • Sense of purpose, knowing you are making a positive difference to people’s lives.

  • Feeling valued and appreciated as a key part of a friendly team.

  • Working in a welcoming place with warmhearted people.

  • Satisfaction of giving back and contributing to your local community.

  • Earning Tempo Time Credits to spend on fun activities both locally and across the UK.

  • Travel expenses reimbursed.

What do I need to have?

  • Capacity to empathise and show compassion for individuals facing difficult times.

  • Good communication skills, including the ability to listen attentively without judgement.

  • Understanding of how to interact thoughtfully with people from various backgrounds.

  • Reliability with a sense of commitment to giving your best.

  • Emotional resilience, patience and the ability to remain calm.

  • Basic understanding of technology such as emails and internet.

What training and support will I be given?

We provide you with comprehensive induction and training before you start, plus ongoing support to ensure that you feel confident and capable in your role. This includes shadowing, one-to-one support from our Companion Lead plus team wellbeing and developmental opportunities

How do I find out more?

Contact us with any questions or drop in at one of our Coffee Mornings. These are held between 10.30 am and 12.30 pm on the last Thursday of each month and offer the chance for an informal chat and a look around - while enjoying fresh coffee and homemade cake, free of charge. Come along, we’d love to meet you!
