Working alongside the Director and Board of Trustees, the Director of Finance oversees the strategic, business and financial management of the organisation. The successful candidate will be a qualified Accountant with a proven track record of operating at a senior level and with the ability to offer insight and challenge for future development whilst ensuring the financial sustainability and growth of Whitechapel Gallery.
The Director of Finance is responsible for the efficient and effective leadership and management of the Gallery’s finance, governance and commercial activities. With scrupulously high standards, they will drive the quality and transparency of financial management and reporting, ensuring robust financial controls and the smooth running and management of the Gallery’s finances. A key member of the senior leadership team, the Director of Finance contributes to shaping and implementing the Gallery’s strategic development.
Candidates will be able to demonstrate a proven ability in leadership and financial control within a complex organisation, managing people and limited resources effectively, delivering results, thinking strategically and inspiring and motivating others. They will need to demonstrate a high degree of energy and agility, with the ability to build highly effective, collaborative working relationships at all levels of the organisation. The new Director of Finance will demonstrate a high level of financial and business acumen and strategic insight and will possess strong analytical and project management skills.
With experience at Board level, they must be comfortable with presenting to Boards and with the ability to develop strategy and present business plans.
Previous experience of the gallery and museum sector would be desirable but is not essential, and applications are welcomed from candidates with commercial, charitable and private sector backgrounds. It is essential that you have experience of the voluntary sector and working with funders, and you will have a strong understanding and experience of qualitative research. You will have a proven track record in line management and be confident to lead a portfolio of varied projects. As a strong communicator you will be required to facilitate complex discussions and focus groups, build partnerships and have a track record of winning new work. You will also have excellent written skills with the ability of writing in an accessible and engaging manner for different audiences throughout all stages of the research process.

The Opportunity
We are seeking a Director to help lead, develop and grow our Evaluation practice. The Director will sit on our Practice Board and be a key part of the leadership team guiding the success of the practice both commercially and in terms of social impact.
We design and deliver high-quality research and evaluation projects that help our partners make better decisions for children using good evidence. We work with more than 1,400 schools and 80 education organisations each year, with a wide range of partners including schools and multi-academy Trusts, charities and edtech companies, and the public sector.
The Director role will lead business development and strategic partnerships, support and oversee evaluation delivery, and hold a number of strategic responsibilities. For the right candidate we hope it will be both a challenging and rewarding opportunity to shape the direction of a growing social enterprise and help our partners make better decisions to benefit young people.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for someone with experience in research and evaluation, business development, and leadership and management. We are particularly interested in experience of delivering quantitative impact evaluations, though are open to hearing from a range of candidates. Experience and understanding of the UK education system would also be an asset.

The Director of Technology and Transformation is a newly created position which will play a vital role in shaping B Lab UK’s future.
The Director will lead essential work to devise and deliver our strategies for technology and data, and they will lead the development and implementation of business processes that will be essential for B Lab UK to deliver its new long-term strategy in the coming years. The Director will play an important role on the Senior Leadership Team, helping to shape this fast-growing organisation in pursuit of our exciting and important mission.
To be successful in the role, you will need;
- Experience of developing and implementing strategic solutions to improve technology and business process within a rapid growth environment.
- Experience of leading change, building organisational capability and driving performance in a people-positive manner.
