Exciting opportunity to lead our Project Management Office (PMO) 

 

Position: Head of PMO   

Location: Hybrid (3 days in High Wycombe office) 

Job Type: Permanent  

Full-time Salary: £40-45k (depending on experience) 

Reporting to: Head of Operations 

About the Role: The Head of PMO will be responsible for leading and managing the Project Management Office (PMO) within the organisation. This role is crucial in ensuring that the organisation’s projects are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget, whilst also aligning with the strategic goals. The Head of PMO will review, develop and audit our project management methodologies, implement best practices, and ensure consistent delivery of projects across the organisation. 

You will line manage three project managers, overseeing their deployment to manage and support our operational plan projects. You will be responsible for resource planning and providing ongoing support and escalation for the project managers, as well as maintaining oversight of live projects and reporting on performance to senior stakeholders.   

Responsibilities: 

 

 PMO Leadership: 

  • Establish and lead the Project Management Office, ensuring it provides value to the organisation. 

  • Continually review and develop PMO strategies, standards, and methodologies to improve project delivery. 

  • Ensure alignment of projects with the organisation’s strategic and Operational Plan objectives. 

Team Leadership and Development: 

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the project management team (x 3 Project Managers). 

  • Provide training and development opportunities for project managers. 

  • Foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the PMO. 

 

Programme and Project Governance: 

  • Chair Programme Boards to track progress against plan, escalate any risks and/or issues to senior stakeholders. 

  • Review and continually improve the project management governance, including frameworks, processes, and tools. 

  • Ensure that all projects follow standardised methodologies. 

  • Oversee the portfolio of projects, ensuring that resources are allocated appropriately, and that risks and issues are managed effectively. 

 

Stakeholder Management: 

  • Act as the primary point of contact for project-related communication with senior management and stakeholders. 

  • Facilitate communication and collaboration among project teams and stakeholders. 

  • Manage stakeholder expectations and ensure that their requirements are adequately addressed in project plans. 

Project Delivery: 

  • Ensure that all projects are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget. 

  • Oversee the development, management, and tracking of the projects budget. 

  • Monitor project performance and report (via our Dashboard reporting) on progress to senior management. 

  • Implement corrective actions when necessary to ensure project success. 

Continuous Improvement: 

  • Drive continuous improvement in project management practices across the organisation. 

  • Lead post-project reviews to capture lessons learned and improve future project delivery. 

  • Stay up to date with industry trends and best practices in project management. 

 

About You: 

Education: 

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent is highly desirable. 

  • Membership to APM (Association of Project Management) is desirable.  

Experience: 

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in project management, with at least 2 years in a leadership role. 

  • Proven experience in leading a PMO in a small-medium organisation. 

  • Excellent project management skills with significant experience of leading and project managing large complex projects and/or programmes. 

  • Project Management expertise with a proven ability to apply a range of project management methodologies such as agile project management and scrum approaches.   

 

 Skills: 

  • Excellent leadership and team management skills. 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels. 

  • Proficient in project management software and tools (e.g., Smartsheet, Jira, Trello). 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
