Today, St John’s Winchester is dedicated to supporting older people. It offers sheltered housing through its almshouses and provides specialised care services, including dementia support. The charity sustains its work through a substantial property portfolio, continuing to serve the Winchester community while evolving to meet contemporary needs.

Why join us?
Young people and adults with disabilities, neurodivergence and disadvantage are 3 times less likely than anyone else to have a paid job.
This has a huge impact on every aspect of an adult’s life. It is well-evidenced that young people and adults who are unemployed are more likely to live in poverty, lack confidence and self-worth and feel isolated from friends and family.
Depending on the disability you live with, the situation is even worse. Just 1 in 20 adults living with a learning disability and just 3 in 50 adults living with a mental health challenge have a paid job.
The disability/neurodivergence employment gap is harmful and unfair. It’s also fixable. Over 20 years of experience shows us that young people and adults with disabilities are able to find and stay in work with the right help. Employers benefit too.
Everyone at Ways into Work is passionate about supporting people with disabilities, neurodivergence and disadvantage to find the right job for them, secure paid employment and sustain their job with our help.
Why now is the right time to join us
This is an exciting time to join us as earlier this year we converted to a charity (from a CIC). As we look to the future, we are seeking to build on the expertise we have established over the last 20 years.
To date we have relied heavily on contracts from local government. The need to diversify our income base, to support more clients into employment and to provide a more secure future for our clients, fed into our decision to become a charity.
We are seeking a Trustee, who has worked in fundraising, to provide a strategic steer for this work. In the months ahead we will be looking to revise our strategy, recruit a Head of Fundraising and put in place the infrastructure needed to begin to establish new income streams. You would have the opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping these processes, bringing us closer to delivering the support we know our clients need.
Trustee Role Description
As a Trustee, you will play a crucial role in setting the strategic direction of the charity and ensuring good governance. You will contribute to ensuring that the charity fulfils its mission, operates effectively, and remains accountable to its clients - adults and young people living with disabilities and neurodiversity.
Duties:
- Oversee, support and advise the development of our fundraising capability.
- Support and provide advice on achieving Ways into Work’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
- Review and approve operational strategies, policies and recommendations, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
- Act as ambassador for Ways into Work, promoting our work and building networks of interested parties who are enthusiastic about our work.
- Other Duties as are listed in the Candidate Pack
About you:
You do not need to have previous experience of acting as a Trustee. We are looking for you to bring the personal skills and qualities outlined in the Candidate Pack, alongside expert knowledge in fundraising.
We recognise the specialist skills required for different areas of fundraising and would value specialist knowledge in one or more of the following areas so you can provide strategic steers and advice: corporates, major donors, individual giving, community fundraising and/or Trusts and Foundations.
We would greatly value experience of acting at a senior level (such as in a ‘Head of’ role) as you will need to be comfortable sharing your expertise with the wider Board, and offering support and constructive challenge to our new Head of Fundraising and senior leadership team.
We recognise the enormous value of lived experience. We know that there is no ‘us’ and ‘them’. Many in Ways into Work live with disabilities or neurodiversity and/or have wider lived experiences that offer huge value to the work we deliver.
We recommend that you read the attached Candidate Pack before submitting your application. You can access this when you click the 'Apply' button.
Please submit your CV and a Cover Letter that outlines your experience of Charity Fundraising and two other points that you believe will be of interest to Ways into Work.

We are looking for a new Chair to lead a highly motivated group of trustees to support an inspiring charity for people with autism or a learning disability.
At Talkback we seek to enable everyone with autism or a learning disability to lead the fulfilling lives that they want and to actively contribute to their local community.
Our organisation began 24 years ago to give people with a learning disability a voice that was listened to. In response to the needs of the people we support as well as new legislation and the requirements of local and national government, we have diversified, developed and grown to become a highly successful organisation that delivers a wide range of projects across Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes.
We support people aged 16 and above, helping them to define and achieve their life objectives through services such as education, health & wellbeing and employment support. We provide a social network as well as a range of opportunities to engage in sport, woodwork, art and drama.
We employ around 70 staff along with a dedicated group of volunteers. They are led by a highly experienced CEO and a motivated leadership group. Supporting these professionals is a trustee group with a wide range of experience. Talkback has adapted and survived through challenging times. Government funding has always been limited and continues to be so. This requires us to identify alternative sources of funding and to be imaginative in our approach to delivery.
We are looking for a Chair who is motivated to make a real difference to the lives of people who often face disadvantage and to offer leadership and help shape the strategic direction of Talkback. So, if you are someone who relishes a challenge, then leading the Board of Trustees at Talkback could be just what you are looking for. You will work with a group of like-minded, passionate, experienced, and friendly people.
The role would be within Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes, though most Board meetings are remote and would require around 5 hours of your time each month, as well as visits to charity services and events.
Principle roles and responsibilities
As Chair your role is to work closely with the CEO and Leadership team and to ensure that the skills and experience of Board members are used to the best advantage. The Board exists to:
● Ensure the organisation complies with charity law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
● Ensure that the organisation pursues its stated charitable objectives as defined in the Constitution, by establishing a clear vision, set of values and strategy.
● Ensure that operational plans and budgets support the vision and strategy
● Ensure that the views of stakeholders including members are regularly sought and considered
● Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the charity, including having appropriate policies and procedures in place.
● Ensure that major risks to the Charity are identified and managed.
● Ensure that the organisation has appropriate governance structures.
