Overview 

Esteem works with young adults aged 14 - 26 to build lasting self-Esteem and stronger communities through group activities and 1-2-1 support. 

Esteem creates spaces where everyone matters.

Esteem works with 200 young adults annually across all of Sussex who face barriers to achieving their life goals. We have a base in Shoreham and offer a variety of different opportunities, including social drop-in sessions, mentoring, wellbeing sessions, volunteering and counselling. We have a dedicated staff team with various backgrounds and a commitment to championing the views of young adults throughout the organisation.

This is an exciting opportunity to volunteer for a charity that is passionate about giving young adults the chance to develop their skills and confidence, both for their own benefit and for that of society as a whole. Esteem works with young adults to run Wellbeing, Social, Mentoring and Volunteering opportunities, with a youth-led and asset-based approach.

This voluntary role of Trustee & Secretary will include duties such as organising and minuting board meetings and some administrative duties to support the board.  As well as the normal duties of a trustee (see The Essential Trustee Duties) The main aim is for the Trustee Secretary to support the Chair and the CO in ensuring the smooth functioning of the board of trustees. This would also compliment other areas we seek to enhance the trustee team, which include a wide range of skills, and expertise in youth work, strategy planning, business development, financial administration and fundraising, as well as an interest in vocational and personal development for young people, combined with an in-depth understanding of our work and ambitions.

You will be jointly and severally responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, its financial health, the probity of its activities and developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines. All trustees should also be aware of, and understand, their individual and collective responsibilities, and should not be overly reliant on one or more individual trustees in any particular aspect of the governance of the charity.

During Trustee meetings, your role would be to take minutes and record actions. Following each meeting, you would write up the minutes, share with the Board, as well as support the Chair and CO to plan for the next meeting.

Individuals are sought who have a strong empathy with Esteem’s goal of enabling young adults to flourish. The Esteem Secretary will be expected to contribute around 6 hours per month to the organisation, including board meetings, which run for two hours every two months, from 6-8pm at The Old School House, Shoreham. A minimum commitment of two years would be preferable. This post requires some flexibility due to the nature of Esteem being a growing organisation.

Your regular tasks and responsibilities will include:

• Attend Board meetings on Tuesday evenings eveyy 8 weeks at Esteem, from 6-8pm

• Read meeting minutes and pre-reading documents ahead of meeting (sent at least 1 week before the meeting)

• Contribute to all aspects of Esteems Strategy and maintain oversight of the organisation

• Ensuring meetings are effectively organised and minuted

• Ensuring meeting minutes are agreed with Chair and circulated post-meetings

• Maintaining effective records and administration

• Assisting the trustees to uphold  the legal requirements of governing documents, to be compliant with charity law, company law etc. (where relevant)

• Communication and correspondence to include:

• Liaising with the Chair to plan Board meetings 

• Draw on the Governance calendar to help plan agenda items and liaise with the CO  and trustees to produce the necessary updates for review at the Board meeting

• Receiving agenda items from committee members and staff

• Circulating agendas and reports with trustees, staff and Esteem’s youth steering committee with the support and direction of the CO and Chair

• Assist in organising the Annual General Meeting - including 

• Developing the Agenda with the Chair 

• Organisation of venue and dates and invitations

• Circulation of papers

• Supporting the smooth running of the day

• Minuting of the AGM

• Seeking agreement of the minutes from Chair and distribution

• Support the Trustees with organising trustee induction and ongoing training

Person Specification

Essential:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Effective time management and organisational skills

• Ability to work to specified deadlines

• Experience of record keeping, information retrieval and dissemination of data/documentation to Trustees (or Directors or senior managers) and relevant parties.

Money Advice Plus (MAP) 

Is a registered charity, working both locally in Sussex and nationwide with the purpose of providing advice, counsel, support, and assistance to everyone finding it difficult to manage their financial affairs because of poverty, old age, disability or economic abuse.  

MAP is a specialist debt and money advice charity. Our vision is for everyone to have the advice and support they need to manage their own money effectively. We do this by providing person-centred money advice, actively engaging with those who find it most difficult, improving wellbeing and financial resilience.

What will you be doing

We are looking for new Trustees to strengthen the Board. We are looking for trustees with experience in legal and HR. 

People with skills and experience that will help us (including lived experience) are wanted to ensure we maintain our reputation for being a well-run charity. We will welcome people from underrepresented sections of the community including younger people.

What are we looking for

This role is for someone who is organised and methodical, with an eye for detail. Trustees take part in relevant subgroups will also participate fully in Board meetings and play an essential part in the strategic direction and quality development of the organisation. An understanding of the charitable and voluntary sector and its governance will be an advantage, as well as an empathy for the aims and objectives of Money Advice Plus.

In 2022-23, we received 5690 enquiries into our service and assisted 3714 people with debt and welfare benefit problems.  These numbers are for just one year, but the impact on each client is immense and has life-changing outcomes.

The result of this work  

• Increase benefit income by £1,562,348 (£1,963,310) 
• Secure one-off payments of benefits of at least £280,204 (£400,829)
• Secured £116,782 in Discretionary Housing Payments
• Obtain charitable grants and refunds and compensation of £503,357 (£423,019) 
• Insolvency amounting to £596,373. 
• Debt write-off (not insolvency) £1,011,427. This includes £868,843 for victim-survivors £178,784 using our innovative Economic Abuse Evidence Form that is currently piloted by several major banks, debt purchasing and utility companies.
• Negotiated with creditors to reduce client payments of £46,345 (£47,873) per year.

Altogether with charitable payments and other financial outcomes, our clients were better off by a total of £4,375,104 (£4,474,556) per year, an average of £1634 (£938) per client. or £3.17 (£3.50) for every £1 spent on our service.

Money Handling service  

• 424 (438) people received a money-handling service, primarily in Brighton and East Sussex. 
• £5,329,122 (£4,892,00) of clients’ money was handled.  This comprises clients’ income received and used to fulfil their weekly and monthly budget requirements, pay bills and debts, and provide weekly cash.

About this key role

Guided by Women’s Wellbeing Coaches who will support and help you throughout, as a volunteer Peer Advisor you will support the women using a variety of methods to help reduce the risk of reoffending and encourage positive lifestyle choices.  You will provide mentoring for clients in a positive manner, in a way that helps them reach their specific goals, while also advocating on behalf of the clients and providing practical advice, which can include contacting other services or professionals on your client’s behalf and/or accompanying them at meetings.

We will count on you to maintain accurate records of your activity involving support provided to clients and to develop and maintain positive and professional working relationships with all members of staff at St Giles Trust and other professionals in the community.  Undertaking any relevant training requested to support your success and development is also key to this role.

• Lived experience of the criminal justice system (desirable)

Role Summary:

The Chair of the Board of Trustees will provide strategic leadership to Hidayah, ensuring the organization remains aligned with its mission to support and advocate for LGBTQ+ Muslims. The Chair will guide the Board of Trustees in effective governance and act as an ambassador for the charity within both the Muslim and LGBTQ+ communities.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Leadership and Governance:
   • Provide leadership to the Board, ensuring that Trustees fulfil their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity.
   • Oversee the Board of Trustees’ operation, ensuring its members work collaboratively and effectively.
   • Ensure the charity complies with its constitution, governing documents, charity law, and other relevant legislation/regulations.

1. Strategy and Planning:
   • Lead the development and implementation of the charity’s annual strategic plan, ensuring alignment with the needs of LGBTQ+ Muslims.

Essential:

• Demonstrable experience in a leadership role within a charity, non-profit, or similar organization.

Terms of Appointment:

• The Chair will be appointed for an initial term of 3 years, which may be renewed for a further term(s).

Last year 786,574 people were offered information and support from Victim Support. As a Service Delivery Volunteer you will provide specialist support services for people affected by crime.

Volunteering with Victim Support in North Wales

As a Volunteer in North Wales your role will include:

• Supporting victims of all crime types and traumatic events
• Learning how to effectively support victims following the Victim Support Service Model
• Attending networking events and agricultural shows across North Wales
• Attending volunteer team meetings and the chance to work from the office from time to time.

What do we ask of you?

In order to join us as a Service Delivery Volunteer, you must:

• Be 18 years of age or over.
• Be able to volunteer for at least 3 hours per week, for at least 12 months.
• Undertake training over a 10-week period – this includes five virtual training days as well as completing a workbook and online learning modules.
• Undertake a DBS check & be part of the DBS update service.
• Be able to provide two satisfactory references.
• Have an active email address that you are comfortable using in order to engage with VS communications.

• All Victim Support volunteers are entitled to out-of-pocket expenses incurred whilst volunteering, including travel and lunch.

The Trans Legal Clinic is the first trans-led specialist gender identity legal practice in the UK. We are currently recruiting volunteers for roles in our Administration Team. IT volunteers is responsible for supporting the clinic's technological needs, such as IT support network management, and cybersecurity.

They will respond to the Administration Manager. They must be regularly available and in person or remotely 2-6pm on Saturdays.

The ideal candidate will be able to effectively:

• oversee the day-to-day operation of the clinic's IT systems including software and networks
• provide technical support to staff, troubleshooting software issues, and resolving technological problems efficiently
• implement and maintain security measures to protect the clinic's data and information assets from unauthorized access, breaches, or cyber threats
• manage system upgrades, patches, and maintenance activities to ensure the reliability and performance of IT systems

• utilise a strong knowledge of Microsoft network infrastructure and software
• possess excellent team management skills

• high skill level regarding risk management and data back up processes

We are currently recruiting volunteers to be part of our Governance team. The Data Protection Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the clinic's use of data and legal obligations under GDPR, maintaining high standards throughout. They will respond to the Governance and Compliance Manager.

The DPO will: 

• maintain high standards of compliance with GDPR and related legislation.
• review the clinic's policies and processes to improve data protection guidelines.
• respond efficiently and effectively to data breaches if they occur.

Candidates have a unique opportunity to gain legal experience by joining our team in providing support to trans+ individuals. We will provide training and volunteers will join a team of dedicated caseworkers. 

Caseworkers will:

• provide casework support to trans+ clients across the UK

• liaise with external services suitably
• prepare reports for internal use

Pecan is seeking an accountant and Christian to join the Board of Trustees as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance committee. See person spec.

Pecan is a community development charity based in Peckham. We work with the local community to help people find a way through seemingly impossible barriers to a better future.

Over the past 30 years, we’ve seen thousands of clients flourish through our programs, including: ex-offenders and their families, refugees and asylum seekers, young people and the long-term unemployed. We see our service users as people who need supporting – not problems which need solving.

We advocate for those we work with, challenging inequality and injustice at a local and national level to provide hope and belief in a better a future for our community.

Board meetings are held on 10-12 occasions annually on a weeknight at 6.30pm.

Meetings of the Finance committee are held quarterly at a time agreed between trustees and management.

The Treasurer, along with the other finance committee members and senior management, guides the financial and business matters of the charity in line with good practice and in accordance with our governing documents and legal obligations. There are no executive responsibilities within Pecan and the Treasurer will not be an employee.

Main responsibilities and duties - in addition to the general responsibilities of a Trustee and undertaken with other members of the Finance sub-committee

 - To scrutinise and recommend budgets, accounts, financial policies, management accounts and financial statements to the board of Trustees after discussions with the Chief Executive, other senior staff, and other members of the Finance Committee, where applicable.

- To ensure that proper accounts and records are kept, ensuring financial resources are spent and invested in line with the charity’s policies, good governance mechanisms, and legal and regulatory requirements

- To ensure that Pecan has appropriate reserves and investment policies.

- Liaising where applicable with appropriate members of the core management team responsible for the financial and operational activities of the charity.

- Attending and contributing to the work of finance committee in line with its terms of reference and reporting back to the board of Trustees verbally and in writing.

- Liaising with the charity’s auditors where appropriate and monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity.

- Ensuring that specific financial and organisational controls and systems are in place and adhered to.

- Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plans.

- Ensuring that sound financial management of the charity’s resources is maintained and that expenditure and investment are in line with the charity’s objects.

- Reviewing the financial aspects of the charity’s risk register.

● A Christian.

● Experience of financial management, planning and strategic influence.

● An understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.

Pain Concern is a charity providing information and support to people with pain and those who care for them, whether family, friends or healthcare professionals. Role purpose

We are seeking highly motivated individuals to join our social media team to help raise awareness of chronic pain and the work of Pain Concern to reach more people in need of the support we offer.

What you would be doing

• Help develop social media campaigns and day-to-day activities;

• Manage presence in social networking across all platforms;

• Prepare graphics for sharing across channels

• Monitor the impact of social media campaigns; Analyse, review and report on effectiveness of campaigns in an effort to maximize the charity’s reach.

• Scheduling and posting social media content 

• Capture and report on monthly data from across all social media platforms
