ROLE PURPOSE

Walsingham Support are seeking a Charity Trustee with a background in Senior Human Resources Leadership:

As a Board we are seeking an individual with - Charity Trustee (HR) significant leadership experience in particular around delivering cultural change and organisational development with limited budgets or in a low margin sector.

If you have experience in an organisation going through transformational change, who have succeeded in bringing the workforce with them and engaged staff widely in the development and delivery of the change wed love to hear from you.

Experience in or an understanding of Wellbeing and of EDI would be desirable also.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES - Charity Trustee (HR)

• In line with Walsingham Supports Ambitions & Strategic Priorities to contribute actively to the Boards responsibility for the governance of the organisation
• To ensure that Walsingham Support applies its resources exclusively to pursue its charitable objects as defined in its Articles of Association.
• To actively promote the work of Walsingham Support and safeguard its good name and values by acting as an ambassador of the organisation.
• To ensure the effective and efficient administration of Walsingham Support within appropriate risk parameters.
• To ensure the quality-of-service provision and financial viability of Walsingham Support.
• Provide HR Advice to the Board and senior leadership, helping to shape our people strategy
• To ensure that processes are in place to recruit and retain staff with the required skills, capabilities, and values to deliver high quality, safe, personalised and progressive services to the people we support.
• To protect and manage the property of Walsingham Support and to ensure the proper investment of Walsingham's funds.

In addition to the above statutory duties of all Trustees, each individual Trustee should use any specific knowledge or experience they have to help the Board reach sound decisions.

This will involve considering papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, and providing advice and guidance requested by the Board on new initiatives, or other issues relevant to the area of Walsingham Support work in which the Trustee has special expertise.

PERSON SPECIFICATION - Charity Trustee (HR)

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

We are interested in candidates who meet at least one of the following criteria:

• Chartered Member or Fellow of the CIPD
• Substantial experience at a Senior/Director HR professional level
• A thorough understanding of HR policy and practice

Other criteria being assessed:

Understanding of the role of charity boards and their responsibilities and operation, gained through previous experience as an Executive Director or Non-Executive Director / Trustee.

Above all else you will be intrinsically values-driven and committed to enabling more individuals we support to live their lives to the full.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT - Charity Trustee (HR)

REMUNERATION

• This role is unremunerated and offered on a voluntary basis.
• Trustees are encouraged to visit services that are local to them.
• Travel and accommodation expenses are reimbursed for meetings & visits.

TIME COMMITMENT

• The time commitment is at least one day a month.
• There are six board meetings a year and this includes an annual strategy setting day.
• Board meetings are held in person in Central London.
• All trustees are expected to participate on at least one committee and there are four committee meetings a year.
• Committee meetings are held virtually.

TENURE

The term of office for trustees is three years, which can then be extended by an additional two terms of three-years.

The maximum tenure for any trustee is nine years.

Charity Trustee (HR)

• Role: provide HR oversight, analysis and strategic guidance to the CEO and board
• Liaises with: Chair, CEO, trustees, committees, external stakeholders
• Location: Cambridgeshire area/remote
• Voluntary role: reasonable expenses paid
• Time commitment: 0-5 hours per month (estimated), mostly outside office hours
• Term: negotiable, e.g. interim/three years/extendable by re-election

About Us:
Evolve Counselling is a long-established charitable social enterprise, providing low cost, affordable or funded mental health counselling to adults in Cambridgeshire and surrounding counties. Our professional counselling community is made up of 50 – 60 qualified self-employed practitioners, working part-time to deliver talking therapies both online and in person. 

We deliver around 500 counselling sessions per month to a broad range of individuals, many of whom would not otherwise be able to access therapeutic support. Evolve also provides supervision, reflective practice, critical incident support, and mental health awareness and related training to organisations and businesses large and small.

We are in the early stages of developing ambitious growth and innovation programmes, so this is a perhaps the most interesting time to be part of Evolve since we started in the 1970s. Opportunities for new Trustees to make their mark are considerable.

What We’re Looking For:
We are searching for an experienced HR specialist who can support our board, committees, and the CEO as we move through our next strategic stage of consolidation, then growth. Although long-established and successful, Evolve is reshaping itself and your HR expertise will be instrumental in positioning our charity to successfully meet the ever-growing demands and opportunities for supporting good mental health in our communities. Please note, a background in counselling is NOT a prerequisite for this role. Training will be available in general charity governance and in specific areas such as charity finance.

Your skills and knowledge, whether gained in the charity or commercial worlds, in a corporate HR Department, or a specialist consultancy, will help us to plan and “do the right thing” for our small staff and our self-employed counsellors, as we grow.

Including quarterly board meetings, committee sessions (at present virtual), a face-to-face AGM event, away days, and regular meetings with our CEO and the trustees, we anticipate a flexible time commitment of around 0-5 hours per month

Our Trustee Board is responsible for providing us with strategic thinking.  As our Human Resources expert on the Board, you will work alongside the Chair, Personnel Sub-committee and Chief Executive to:

Person Specification

We need someone who either lives, works or studies in Elmbridge who has:

Time commitment

Our Trustees are expected to attend six board meetings each year.  These normally take place on a Monday evening, alternating between 5-7pm and 7pm-9pm, at our office in Esher. There is an option to join most meetings online, although we encourage meeting in person.  Reading preparation for each Board meeting will take around one-two hours.  All Citizens Advice Trustees are required to complete a small number of e-learning courses each year.

You will also be asked to Chair and prepare papers for our Personnel sub-committee which meets six-monthly, and to offer ad-hoc support relevant to your expertise.

As an online “ At Home” Volunteer, you will be working with people from a wide variety of countries and cultures, all believing in passing on the right to basic education, the importance of cultural exchange, and giving voice to the voiceless. 

The Position: We ask Volunteers to contribute a minimum of one hour a month. Within our Human Resource Division you will be learning to process applicants from around the world, assigning them to appropriate Teams and coordinating the Team Leads training sessions and monthly meetings. While English is required, you will learn to be comfortable with various global accents as well as proficient in your Interviewing skills and background research. You will practice team organizing & management skills. Depending on which teams you join, you will learn non profit contracts, global time zone coordination and other very basic, practical skills when working with people Internationally and online.

IHF Overview

The International Humanity Foundation (IHF) is a 501 c3 International Non- profit, founded in 2001. Our two-fold mission is (1) to Educate marginalized children—activating their highest potential and nurturing healthy, loving communities around them. The happiness of our worlds children rises above all political and religious differences; And equates to the quality of our worlds happiness tomorrow. — (2) to Educate global citizens through communication and real life experiences, (online and in person), about the realities of marginalized communities; while teaching practical skills in aiding needed efforts, thus giving voice to the voiceless. 

For over twenty years, IHF has offered children and adults (from young through retirement) venues for learning and safely practicing leadership skills.

Trustees 

We are looking for up to 3 new Trustees to join us and help run our successful charity. 

We are looking for Trustee candidates who have experience/expertise in one or more of the following areas: 

General management

Finance/bookkeeping

Safeguarding

Premises/facilities

Fundraising 

HR

You will take the lead in your area of expertise and be able to commit time to deliver on initiatives or projects related to your specialism.

In addition  you will have:

Good written and verbal communication skills

Attention to detail with the ability to work under own initiative within a defined framework.

MS Office skills: Word; Excel; PowerPoint and SharePoint.

The Ryan Neuro Therapy Centre supports people with neurological conditions by delivering physiotherapy and other therapies to benefit their health and welfare in a caring, friendly, and supportive environment. We are a small self-funded charity in Coulsdon, reliant entirely on fundraising and donations to provide the income needed each year to run the Centre. The organisation took on charitable status in 1995 supporting people living with Multiple Sclerosis. In 2023, we expanded our provision to support other neurological conditions. The Charity has 18 members of staff (all part-time), 15 volunteers and over 100 members with neurological conditions.

The Charity

Ships and seafarers touch our lives like no other group of individuals and are largely invisible from us as they ply the oceans every day to bring us 90% of our daily necessities. To bring us our supplies seafarers navigate treacherous weather conditions and are separated from their homes and families for long periods. They often experience isolation, impacting their mental health. They can be abandoned by irresponsible ship owners, and they can be jailed through no fault of their own.

The Mission to Seafarers has been helping bring practical, emotional, and spiritual support to seafarers and their families since 1856. We are well established and well-known throughout the maritime world. Across our nine regions, our network of 200 port operations in 50 countries provides emergency assistance and the hand of friendship to those who find themselves lonely and isolated in a foreign port.

The Mission to Seafarers is a Christian charity closely linked with the Church of England and the wider Anglican Communion. While this is central to its purposes, it also enjoys a wide diversity of trustees, staff, volunteers and supporters, prides itself on the breadth of its partnerships, is deeply committed to the service of those of all faiths and none and expresses its “mission” in strongly holistic and practical ways.

The Board

The Charity is led by a high calibre Board of Trustees who are prominent leaders with wide experience of the shipping industry, leading members of the clergy or industry leaders with relevant experience. The Board is led by the Chairman, Thomas Boardley, who has over 30 years’ experience in the maritime sector, including several years as Marine Director at Lloyds Register. 

The Trustees provide appropriate oversight, strategic direction, expertise, support and contacts for the Mission’s work and hold meetings a minimum of four times a year (usually January, April, July and October). The Board also has the following sub-committees which usually meet once or twice a year: Audit and Risk, Governance and Nominations, Grants and Programme, Investment, and Remuneration. Trustees are usually required to sit on a minimum of one committee and some Trustees serve as the lead Trustee for one of our nine regions, and act as a sounding board for the regional director. The position of Trustee is voluntary but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed by The Mission.

The Role

Each Trustee term lasts for three years and Trustees may be appointed to the Board for up to three consecutive three-year terms making nine consecutive years. Board meetings are normally held in London with a hybrid (online) option available for each meeting when Trustees are unable to attend in person. Meetings normally last about three hours and Trustees are expected to devote sufficient time to prepare for meetings and attend. The Remuneration Committee normally meets once a year with occasional ad hoc meetings as required. 

Whilst the Charity has a large global footprint, most of its global work is carried out through locally employed personnel in the various regions, some of which are grant funded by the UK entity. The remit of the Remuneration Committee is therefore primarily ordained and lay staff in the United Kingdom with opportunity to contribute expertise in broader Board discussions including those relating to Human Resources Management globally. 

Trustee Role Description

• Working with other Trustees to ensure that the Mission pursues its charitable object, as defined in its governing document, by developing and agreeing a long-term strategy.
• Ensuring that the charity complies with its governing document, charity law, company law, any other relevant legislation or regulations and principles of good governance.
• Placing the Mission’s beneficiaries at the forefront of all debates about strategic direction, budget-setting, planning and other relevant functions.
• Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the charity and that appropriate policies and procedures are in place for good governance.
• Ensuring the financial stability of the charity and that the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its charitable object.
• Ensuring that the Mission defines its goals and evaluates performance against agreed targets.
• Safeguarding the reputation and values of the charity and leading by example.
• Protecting and managing the property of the charity and ensuring the proper investment of the charity’s funds.
• Participating in any board induction, training and evaluation identified as an individual trustee and as part of the board or committee.

In addition to the above statutory duties, each trustee is expected to use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise. 

Member of Remuneration Committee Role description

In addition to those duties and responsibilities performed by all trustees, this role involves being a member of the Remuneration Committee. Responsibilities include:

• Alongside other members of the Committee, contributing skills, experience and opinions in order to ensure adequate scrutiny of the Charity’s remuneration policy.
• Advising the Committee and the Board on the charity’s HR practices and remuneration strategy.
• Acting as a sounding board for the Chief Operating Officer on HR matters as required.
• Acting as Deputy Lead Safeguarding Trustee. Experience of safeguarding practice is not essential to fulfil this role.
• Representing the Mission at occasional events, meetings or functions as appropriate.

Person Specification 

• Commitment to the charity’s purpose, values, and Christian ethos. 
• Qualified human resources professional with demonstrable commercial awareness and knowledge of compensation and benefits. 
• Ability to work effectively and collegiately as a member of the Board. 
• Sound, independent judgement and a willingness to speak their mind.
• Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties and responsibilities of trusteeship and a willingness to adhere to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
