We are seeking a Head of Communications and Marketing to lead on the charity's communications strategy.
The Head of Communications and Marketing is a strategically important post in the organisation with lead responsibility for overseeing communications, marketing and PR for the UK’s only national cleft lip and palate support charity. The role involves managing all aspects of internal and external communications including media relations, digital content and brand strategy.
The role reports directly to the Chief Executive, is a member of the Senior Management Team and works closely with the CLAPA Board of Trustees to ensure that we maximise all opportunities to promote the work of the charity. The post holder also has responsibility for the direct line management of the Communications and Marketing team.

We are looking for a compassionate leader to take our Internal Communications and Engagement function to the next level as we enter the next phase of our Help and Hope strategy in 2027. You’ll be a culture champion, inspiring storyteller, digital innovator, and cross-organisation relationship builder.
This is a leadership role within our People Directorate and will head up a collaborative Internal Communications and Engagement team that is focused on evolving our culture framework and creating an inspiring workplace through communications. This role will lead the team to create a framework for culture development that is focused on driving our bold ambitions as a charity and having a demonstrable impact. You will join our heads of community and be working with senior leaders across the organisation so experience of influencing, joining the dots and working collaboratively across large organisations will be important.

You will be building on strong foundations of comms and engagement best practices and have scope to shape what comms and culture at the Society could look like for the future that will ultimately have the greatest impact on those living with dementia.
It’s a varied and creative role – from shaping the organisational narrative, through to innovating creative ways to engage and leading events that inspire - creating a culture of open and transparent communication are all part of this role.

This role is responsible for fundraising, donor relations, and legacy initiatives, as well as coordinating and delivering events and communications aimed at engaging with Old Scholars and the broader Ackworth School and Quaker community.
Reporting to the Director of Marketing, Admissions and Communications, the Head of Alumni Engagement and Development will collaborate closely with various school departments to elevate the school’s profile and optimise income generation. The focus will be on relationship management with key high-value donors and promoting a culture of philanthropy. Additionally, the role will drive support for Ackworth School capital projects and cultivate a culture of donor care that motivates current and potential supporters.
Ackworth School, a co-educational boarding and day school, was founded in 1779 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). The successful candidate will be able to:
·Collaborate with the Director of Marketing, Admissions and Communications to create a fundraising strategy centred on capital projects and bursaries.

The responsibilities of this role will include:
1. Financial Management
- Be responsible for and run the organisation’s bookkeeping and financial management processes including invoices, expenses and bank payments.
- Produce and manage the organisational cash flow, project cash flows and management accounts.
- Be responsible for and run payroll monthly.
- Compile and submit VAT returns quarterly.
- Support the Executive Director with managing the charity and project budgets and financial reporting to the board and funders.

2. Administration
- Oversee the day-to-day administration of the charity to promote smooth business operations, including the efficiency of organisational systems.

- Support Executive Director and trustees in ensuring Charity Commission and Companies House information is up to date.

3. HR
- Manage recruitment and induction of new staff and volunteers.
- Create, implement and review all policies and procedures for the organisation, ensuring we are up to date with statutory requirements, and good practice is incorporated where practical.
- Manage HR procedures including contracts and leave for staff.
The role will also include:
- Support in organising events online and in person.
- Assisting in responses to general enquiries to the organisation.
- Potential line management of junior staff and interns as appropriate.
- Contribute actively to the implementation of Institute-wide decisions and strategy.
- Organise weekly team meetings, and occasional in-person team meetings.

Personal Specification
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate many of the following skills and attributes:
Essential:
- A relevant professional accountancy qualification (AAT, CIMA, ACA, ACCA) with some experience of working independently or with minimal supervision, preferably in the charity sector.
- At least 3 years’ relevant professional experience in a similar administrative, financial or management role.
- Experience of using accounting software and managing the financial administration of an organisation including paying and issuing invoices, reconciling bank accounts, and running payroll.
- Experience and confidence in producing and managing an organisational cashflow, budgets and management accounts.
- Experience of preparing and submitting VAT returns.
- Experience of creating and reviewing HR policies and procedures.
- Excellent communication skills
- As part of a small team you will also need the ability to turn your hand to a variety of tasks.

1. Organisational leadership and people management

What is the most interesting campaign or campaigning initiative run by 38 Degrees in the last two years, and why?
The Maternal Mental Health Alliance’s (MMHA) Everyone’s Business campaign calls for all women throughout the UK who experience a perinatal mental health problem to receive the care and support they and their families need, wherever and whenever they need it. This role will play a key part in supporting MMHA’s successful campaign and helping drive change for women, babies and families affected by mental health problems during pregnancy and after birth.
Job purpose
- Support the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the MMHA campaigns.
- Contribute to researching and producing campaign materials.
- Maintain relationships with a range of stakeholders to support campaign objectives, including MMHA members, MPs, academics and lived experience champions.
- Support MMHA projects, contributing to the delivery of the MMHA’s strategy.
- Support the campaign team with administrative tasks, meetings and events.
Main responsibilities
- Work with the Head of Campaigns and Policy, Communications Manager, and senior leadership to develop and deliver campaigning activities to improve maternal mental health care in the UK.
- Support the production of campaign resources, including desk research, drafting copy, and proofreading.
- Reading and summarising policy information, such as reports.
- Lead political monitoring, tracking relevant policy developments, identifying opportunities for engagement with MPs and attending meetings.
- Support campaign communication activities, including press and social media support, website editing and copywriting for articles or newsletters.
- Lead monitoring of work with academic partners, maintaining records, liaising with partners and participating in projects, as requested.
- Support campaigning in the devolved nations, identifying cross-nation opportunities.
- Assist the Head of Campaigns and Policy and wider team with administrative and other tasks, including the organisation and facilitation of meetings and events and responding to routine enquiries.
- Help support MMHA projects, as required.
- Work with the team on campaign evaluation.
- Maintain a diary of key campaign dates and events.
- Represent the MMHA at events, as required.
Essential skills and experience
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to engage with wide and diverse groups.
- Good communication skills including verbal and written communications, familiar with representing information to external audiences, tailoring communication to be accessible and appropriate.
- Excellent organisational skills, including successful events and meetings, with an ability to plan, organise and prioritise work to deadlines and under pressure.
- Familiar with reading, summarising and writing complex documents in the policy arena.
- Experience working with civil servants, MPs, and decision-makers.
- Experience in office administration, including dealing with routine enquiries and database work.
- Experience working in contexts where high levels of empathy and sensitivity are required.
- Excellent teamwork skills.
- Ability to work on own initiative with minimum supervision.
- An interest in the work of MMHA and commitment to our values.
Desirable skills and experience
- Understanding of maternal mental health problems.
- Experience of working within a charity or campaigning environment.
