Key Responsibilities:

practices, and those relating to being a registered charity.
● Act as a bridge between the JCR and college leadership, advocating for students and
ensuring their voice is central to the college's strategy.
● Responsibility for the employment, and supervision of, the CIO’s single employee who is
the elected JCR President.

We are looking for:
● Proven experience in student development, educational settings, or governance within
an academic or non-profit organisation
● Strong communication, organisational, and leadership skills, with the ability to manage
multiple priorities.
● A collaborative approach, with experience in building consensus and working with
diverse stakeholders.
● Board or Committee experience in some capacity.

It would be helpful if you have:
 Financial or legal experience, preferably with an understanding of non-profit or student
organisation management.
 Experience in EDI or HR, with a focus on creating inclusive environments.
 Demonstrable ability and experience in advising organisations on information
management and/or GDPR and/or cybersecurity.
 Previous experience as a board chair.

The board meets at least four times a year, two of which we hold in Durham and two of which
are held remotely.

Do you want to help prevent Breast Cancer? Are you a scientific or medical professional with strong networks and you want to use your skills to help a fantastic charity build their scientific expertise and authority in the field of primary breast cancer prevention? 

We are looking for an individual with a strong scientific or medical background who has considerable research experience to join our Board of Trustees. As a member of the Board’s science sub-committee, you will support the CEO and the Head of Science and Health Education in supporting the growth and evolution of our scientific programme and in strengthening our scientific authority. 

ABOUT US 

Breast Cancer UK's mission is to prevent breast cancer through scientific understanding, education, collaboration, and policy change. 

We are the only UK breast cancer charity focused entirely on the primary prevention of breast cancer through education, research and campaigning. Today 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with the disease at some point in their lives but at least 30% breast cancers are thought to be preventable. 

• We fund scientific research that will help to understand and address the preventable risk factors for breast cancer. 

• We educate and raise awareness of the preventable risk factors for breast cancer and provide practical information to help people reduce their risk. 

• We campaign for policy changes that promote the prevention of breast cancer and promote breast cancer prevention communication between scientists, consumers and industry. 

Our research focuses on environmental and chemical causes of breast cancer but our education and advice includes all preventable risk factors. 

THE ROLE 

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Board and support the CEO and wider staff team to deliver our vision and strategy. 

As well as a scientific research or medical background, you will have outstanding communication skills and be able to support, challenge and scrutinise the charity’s science and education  programme, as well as constructively contribute fully to wider issues considered by the Board. While you may not have personal or family experience of breast cancer, you will need to have a passion for what we do. 

PERSON SPECIFICATIONS 

Breast Cancer UK’s Board of Trustees wishes to recruit candidates from diverse backgrounds to join the Board of Trustees. Trustees are particularly keen to recruit candidates from the public, private, or third/ voluntary sectors with leadership experience and expertise in the following areas: 

• scientific research (including cancer research) 

• healthcare or clinical research 

• health education

• science education 

You must be over 18 and have excellent communication skills.

Breast Cancer UK’s strategic plan focuses on growing our income, reach, profile, and impact. To achieve this, you must be able to bring to the charity opportunities for reaching and engaging with new stakeholders and influencers with whom the charity can build meaningful relationships that support our strategic objectives. 

Critically, you will have a good knowledge of charity or not-for-profit governance principles and responsibilities and a strong affinity with the charity’s mission and values. 

KEY REQUIREMENTS 

You will: 

• Have experience and skills in scientific or clinical research, ideally with experience in breast cancer or the health effects of environmental chemicals. 

• Have strong global networks with scientific groups and research institutions. 

• Have a sound understanding of how scientific research funding operates. 

• Have effective listening, communicating and influencing skills with an ability to build relationships and work collaboratively and effectively as part of a board of trustees. 

OTHER INFORMATION 

Time Commitment 

Critically, you must be willing and able to devote the necessary time and effort to a trusteeship. This includes preparing for and attending all Breast Cancer UK Trustee Board Meetings and Science and Health Education Committee Meetings. 

Trustees meet quarterly in London, usually in the evening (meetings are usually between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.). You will also be expected to sit on the Science and Health Education Committee.  All Committees take place via video call (Microsoft Teams), usually for two hours per quarter in the evenings, this is organized by the Science and Health Education team.

You will also be expected to attend one annual strategy planning day and two informal meetings with Trustees in London.

In addition, you are requested to devote some time to your role as an Ambassador – by promoting the charity through their own networks and activities. 

You will be expected to commit around 4-5 hours a month to the role.

Trustees are not remunerated; however reasonable travel expenses incurred whilst carrying out their duties can be claimed.

The Peter Sowerby Foundation is a significant, charitable grant-maker supporting work in the fields of health, education and community, the arts, and the environment. It is seeking grant making trustees.

Registered with the Charity Commission in 2011, the Foundation aims to fulfil the charitable aims of its late settlor, Dr Peter Sowerby, a retired GP from rural North Yorkshire and founding partner in Egton Medical Information Systems (EMIS), which now provides database and records management software for over 10,000 healthcare organisations in the UK and in excess of 16M of the UK population.

The Foundation is currently managed by a board of four trustees.  These are David Aspinall, Chair of Trustees; Dr David Stables, Peter Sowerby’s former GP partner and an expert in management information systems; Sara Siegel Poulios, lead partner in Deloitte’s Healthcare Strategy who has been seconded to senior positions in the Department of Health and NHS, and Dr Carole Longson, Chief Scientific Officer at the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI).

Since it was established, the Foundation has awarded hundreds of grants. Some of these have been small grants to local, grass-roots organisations, whilst others have been to large, well-established charities and educational institutions. In total, the Foundation has awarded some £15 million in grants since inception.

Principles

In keeping with the wishes and personal character of Dr Sowerby, the Foundation continues to be a funder that is distinctive in its approach to grant-making and which is prepared to push the boundaries of achievement within its chosen fields so as to make a tangible and lasting impact. The Foundation also places innovation and influence on wider policy and practice at the forefront of grant making​.

 In terms of geography, the Foundation largely supports UK-wide projects but has occasionally provided grants to international ventures. Trustees are particularly interested in supporting projects in Dr Sowerby’s much-loved home of North Yorkshire.

What are we looking for?

The Foundation is currently seeking additional trustees to join the Foundation and is particularly looking for individuals with one or more of the following:

• experience working within the health sector/NHS in a front line capacity ­– we note this could be current GP, consultant, clinician or another similar post
• experience in financial management/strategic oversight – especially at Board Level
• experience in grant making and the evaluation of the impact of grant making.

The Foundation will also consider applications from potential trustees, with experience outside of the above areas, but with an interest in the work of the Foundation and its charitable endeavours.

Person Specification

The Foundation is seeking to appoint at least two trustees with skills and experience that can help us achieve our objectives, who can bring energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to the role and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our Board.

Individuals should have the ability to exercise good, independent judgement and provide a willingness to participate actively in discussion and debate.

Knowledge of the process of charitable grant-making would be beneficial for the role but is not essential.

A comprehensive induction process will be available to the selected individual(s).

What difference will you make?

The trustees have overall control of the governance of the Foundation and are ultimately responsible for the charity. Grant solicitation and directorial support is provided under contract from Cause4, whilst an outsourced finance function is provided by FLB Accountants. The Foundation also employs a governance expert as administrator to the board.

The Foundation has an expendable endowment of some £65M and Trustees are advised by their investment consultancy, HFMC Wealth, with investment management services provided by four leading investment houses.

The Board meets virtually each quarter (for up to three hours) and, from time to time, Trustees are also asked to attend to governance and grant matters remotely between meetings. We estimate the total time commitment to be about four-six days per year.

Specific responsibilities of trustees include:

• reviewing and setting the strategic aims for the Foundation
• reviewing progress against the strategic aims
• setting annual budgets for grant-making and management
• considering operational and financial risks
• authorising grant programmes
• approving and assessing grants
• approving the investment policy and reviewing investment performance and risk
• approving annual accounts and annual report.

The Head of Fundraising will be responsible for managing all fundraising initiatives and functions of the charity, including strategy development, donor engagement, and team leadership. About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly experienced individual to join the Executive Leadership Team of the Charity. As Fundraising Director, you would be responsible for developing key fundraising strategies that are designed to allow the Charity to reach its fundraising targets. Once developed, you would then be responsible for delivering against the key milestones within those strategies, directly contributing to the growth of the Charity.

Responsibilities 

• Develop, maintain and execute our Fundraising Strategy, taking into account various different methods of fundraising in which can be used to generate funds for the Charity that are aligned with the fundraising targets set by the Board of Trustees.
• Partner with the Commercial Director to ensure that income targets are going to be met for the Charity. Seek opportunities to deliver strong income streams from a variety of funding sources.
• Review existing fundraising practices, assess their effectiveness and implement changes that improves the overall success of the Charity in all areas of fundraising.
• Recruit, design and lead a team of Fundraising volunteers across various areas, ensuring that they have the right coaching and guidance to succeed. This involves ensuring that the structure of the Fundraising team remains appropriate as the Charity grows.
• Partner closely with our Communications Director and Marketing Director to ensure that all fundraising campaigns generate the attention needed to deliver key returns.

Skills 

• 5+ years experience required at a leadership or strategic level in any of the following areas: Fundraising, Marketing, Sales, CSR or ESG.
• Exceptional leadership, business, and interpersonal proficiency.
• Be able to set business targets, timelines, plans and financial targets.
• Be able to develop key fundraising strategies and build a team to ensure delivery against commitments to the Charity.
• Prior thriving managerial experience.
• Demonstrate clear ability to inspire and motivate others to achieve.
• Fundraising experience in any area (individual giving, grant based fundraising, corporate sponsorship and legacy)
• Excellent computer and technology skills.
• Demonstrate sound communication and presentation skills.

The National Churches Trust exists to support churches, chapels and meeting houses so that they remain at the heart of the communities for which they were built and can continue to play an integral part in all our lives.

The future of our churches, chapels and meeting houses is the single biggest challenge facing the heritage of the United Kingdom. It is also a challenge that goes to the heart of questions about the future of our communities, above all those that are more isolated and vulnerable. Our churches include nearly half of our most important historic buildings, listed Grade 1 or equivalent. They also contain by far the nation’s largest collection of art, sculpture and stained glass.

Increasingly too, from food banks to credit unions, the UK’s church buildings provide a growing list of essential services for people in urgent need. They are the ‘National Help Service’ providing the safety net that stops our most vulnerable people falling through the cracks and being the social glue that keeps our communities together.

However, despite their importance, our churches are at risk as never before.

More churches are closing, and many others face a very uncertain future. Historic England’s 2023 At Risk Register includes over 900 churches. In Wales, about a quarter of historic churches have closed in the last ten years, with many more now in danger. Meanwhile, in Scotland, as many as 40% of the Church of Scotland’s churches face closure.

We are seeking three trustees that will further align the board’s expertise with our vision and strategic plans to galvanise long-term support to help as many churches as possible, by bringing skills in one or more of the following areas:

• Architectural history, heritage and Conservation: in-depth knowledge and experience of, as well as strong networks in, the heritage and conservation sectors.

• Digital and technology: experience of leadership where digital technologies or digital marketing are central to an organisation’s strategy.

• Communications: first-hand experience of how the media operate and in-depth understanding of how to communicate effectively with different audiences.

We have an active board of Trustees from a range of different backgrounds who continually provide guidance and support to the charity.The Trustee role offers an exciting opportunity to get involved in an engaging, decision making role which contributes to the strategy, financial strategy and day-to-day management of the organisation.

Our existing Board has a diverse range of experience and skills and we are looking to grow and develop these to support the organisation in the future.  We are particuarly interested in hearing from people with experience and/or knowledge of the following areas:

• Financial Management (including investment planning/management accounts) 
• Estate Planning
• Charity Retailing
• Fundraising / Income generation Fundraising

Orchards is at an exciting point of growth as we expand into new hubs with our support and housing provision. We are looking for new Trustees to strengthen the Board and help position us for sustainable growth in the coming years. We are particularly looking for Trustees with experience in the following areas:

- Safeguarding – a qualified social worker or safeguarding professional with experience of adult safeguarding. This Trustee will work alongside the Safeguarding Lead to ensure best practice and ongoing monitoring of safeguarding strategy within the organisation.

- Church leader or church network leader – an experienced church leader able to work across denominations. This Trustee will help us to develop our church partnerships and to bring local church perspective into the strategy and growth of the charity.

- Housing – an experienced housing professional with knowledge of social and Local Authority housing. This Trustee will help us work strategically with Local Authorities as we expand our housing provision and seek creative ways to provide move-on housing options for women.

CMV Action are seeking a proactive and committed treasurer to join our board of trustees, bringing financial expertise and strategic guidance to help our charity navigate a challenging period.

About CMV Action

CMV Action is the only charity in the UK providing support and information to families affected by congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV). Congenital CMV is the most common viral infection that can affect babies before birth, with potential long-term health impacts such as hearing loss, developmental delays and vision loss. It can also cause miscarriage and stillbirth.

As many as 1 in 200 newborn babies are born with congenital CMV.  The majority of these will not have any symptoms.  However, around 1 in 1,000 born in the UK every year will have permanent disabilities as a result of congenital CMV – around 900 children every year.  As congenital CMV is a relatively unknown condition, it is a common misconception that it is rare.  It is in fact more common than Down’s syndrome, Toxoplasmosis, Spina Bifida or Cystic Fibrosis.

Despite the prevalence and potential severity of congenital CMV, awareness and knowledge are alarmingly low among healthcare professionals, parents and the general public. One of our key roles, therefore, is to develop and deliver resources and training for healthcare professionals, run public awareness campaigns, and collaborate with researchers and policy makers to improve outcomes for those affected by congenital CMV.

The Role

As treasurer, you will play a key role in overseeing the financial health of our charity and ensuring we are well-positioned to continue our work. You will work with us to ensure that the charity complies with its governing document, charity law, and any other relevant legislation or regulations.This is an opportunity to make a significant difference by contributing your financial expertise to help us develop and implement a sustainable funding strategy.

What we are looking for

We are seeking a Treasurer who shares our values and can bring the following skills and experience to our board:

• Financial expertise: A background in finance, accounting, or financial management, with a qualification in line with a recognised professional body (e.g., ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW). Experience in charity finance is highly desirable.
• Proactive and purposeful: Ability to think strategically, explore new financial pathways, and drive change to support the charity’s long-term viability.
• Collaborative spirit: Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to working closely with others to build a sustainable funding strategy.
