The Financial Accountant is primarily responsible for the preparation of statutory financial statements for three school charities under the Charities SORP. For two of these charities, the work involves the consolidation of the results of the school operations. The postholder will be the key contact for the external auditor for the year-end audits for these charities.
There will also be an opportunity to support with the production of other financial information and to contribute to improvements in financial procedures and controls, both within financial reporting and more widely in the Finance department.
The role is expected to be part-time though it may require some weeks of full-time (or close to full-time) during the external audit period. The work is likely to take c.4 months, after which point the responsibilities for the school charities will revert to the permanent team.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements
- Qualified or part-qualified accountant, or with significant equivalent professional experience
- Experience in the operation of Charity fund accounting
- Good knowledge of and confidence with key IT applications
- MS Office 365, especially Excel
- Accounting systems, notably Exchequer
- Confident and experienced with key statutory reports
- Experience of working with charities and / or membership organisations preferable

We are working with a leading Membership Organisation to recruit for an interim Financial Accountant on a contract basis. The role will be responsible for assisting various smaller branches in completing their external audit and signing off financial returns.
Key responsibilities of the role:
- Assisting Branch managers carry out the external audit and complete year end

About the Role
Reporting directly to the Deputy Director of Finance & Procurement, the Financial Accounting Manager's key responsibilities will:
- To assist the Deputy Director of Finance and Procurement with the preparation of the School and subsidiary annual financial statements, including compliance with FE/HE SORP and Office for Students' accounts direction.
- To prepare the School's quarterly VAT and annual corporation tax returns
- To monitor the School's cash position and prepare regular cash flow statements
- To liaise, as appropriate, with the School's external auditors, tax advisors and HMRC representatives
- To contribute to the operation and development of the School's financial IT system (Agresso) and other finance systems, in particular assisting with the development of financial reports.
- To ensure the integrity and completeness of the financial ledgers for monthly, quarterly and year end accounts
- To co-ordinate the financial administration of all capital projects and monitor and report on expenditure against budget
- To assist the Deputy Director of Finance and Procurement with the appraisal of capital projects, investments and other projects.
- To assist in the preparation of the School's financial forecast, with specific responsibility for forecasting the School's structure of assets and liabilities

About the team
Shelter’s Finance Team sits within the Strategy Enablement Directorate, which also includes HR Operations, Technology and Data, and Governance, Planning and Property. The Finance Team consists of 30 people led by the Assistant Director of Finance.
The Head of Financial Planning and Analysis leads the Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) Team and reports to the Assistant Director of Finance. FP&A produces financial reports and analysis, provides expert advice, and enables collaboration to support effective decision making throughout the charity.

The Role

Payroll:
- Collaborate with payroll bureau, Moore Pay and People Team to ensure efficient monthly payroll.
- Manage the working relationships with our payroll bureau and People Team colleagues on a daily basis ensuring that communication is clear and relevant information is being provided and collated in a timely manner so that payroll runs efficiently each month.
- Verify trial payroll data for accuracy before submission.
- Generate and distribute payroll reports, including agency and absence rates.
- Perform regular audits of payroll and pension systems.
- Resolve payroll issues and manage statutory payments (SSP, Maternity, Paternity).
- Ensure HR data is up-to-date through monthly audits.
- Maintain accurate pay records and systems in accordance with financial accounting requirements and HMRC guidelines.
- Collate and check trial payroll information such as absence data and employee information, prior to the submission of the monthly payroll to ensure accuracy and minimise pay related issues.
- Produce and distribute pay reports including use of resources such as agency and bank workers and absence rates.
- Provide checks and balances function for payroll and pensions processes through regular systems audits and checking source data with systems data.
- Be first point of contact for employees and resolve any issues in a timely manner.
- Manage the administration of statutory payments, SSP, Maternity and Paternity Pay ensuring that calculations are accurate and notified to payroll.
- Work with the People Team to ensure that HR Data and people records are maintained to high standard and up to date through a monthly audit process.

Project Accountant
Canterbury, Kent

The Project Accountant is a very important role for the organisation as you will be responsible for overseeing our strategic projects, ensuring that sufficient funds are available for planned project expenditure within the Diocese.
As Project Accountant you will manage the restricted funds of the Diocese, preparing monthly reports and year end schedules whilst proactively reviewing the portfolio of restricted funds to ensure full utilisation against unrestricted expenditure. You will also prepare forecasts for project income, expenditure and cashflow, whilst analysing all project expenditure and providing detailed commentary on material variances against project budget.
Reporting to the Head of Finance, you will support the team in the planning, preparation and delivery of statutory reports, publications, internal and external audits, and the Annual Report and Accounts.
It is expected that you will proactively challenge and improve processes to ensure that currently held information meets the audit standard.
Degree qualified or with a professional accountancy, finance or related qualification (ideally ACCA or CIMA), you will have experience in year-end schedule preparation and project report writing.
With the ability to interpret financial entries to understand the nature of the financial transactions, you should have excellent problem-solving abilities and be proactive in reviewing balance sheet reconciliations and clearing/or allocating balances.
Your thorough understanding of financial regulations and compliance requirements will ensure you are able to propose improvements to financial procedures and operations.
An advanced knowledge and understanding of Excel, including pivot tables, sumif/sumifs and vlookups along with a detail-oriented approach to ensure accuracy and completeness in financial records and reports, are essential.

The role of Senior Management Accountant
Overview
As Senior Management Accountant at Calvert Exmoor you will be required to reduce the complexity of and deliver accurate financial reporting, supply information to relevant financial bodies, assist the Finance Manager with streamlining existing processes and ensure that the finance function can continue to run effectively at all times.
Key responsibilities
- To oversee the production and audit of the Annual Financial Statements
- To assist the Centre Director wherever possible in ensuring compliance with all financial bodies.
- To oversee and support the preparation of the annual and monthly budgets and forecasts.
- To deliver change management through the finance function, including system processes and methodology to streamline the function and eliminate any inefficiencies.
- To work with the Finance Manager and income generating teams to ensure that the routine reporting system is automated wherever possible.
- Develop and monitor financial performance through KPIs and forward-looking reporting.
- To review reports where appropriate, comment on performance against budget and provide explanation for variances and recommendations where possible.
- To coordinate and be a key point of contact amongst with regards to all aspects of insurance.
- Deliver ad hoc financial modelling.
- To have sufficient knowledge of the day-to-day systems and processes to be able to stand in for the Finance Manager for short periods.
- Lead and manage the Finance Manager including regular performance and development reviews.
What you will need
- CIMA, ACCA, ACA, or equivalent or qualified by experience to the higher level
- The ability to analyse complex financial information and provide insights
- The ability to interpret and present financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders
- A strong understanding of UK charity law, tax regulations, and financial compliance
- Proficiency in Excel, financial accounting systems, and software
- Knowledge and experience of using Sage is desirable
- The desire to simplify processes to improve business performance
- Proven experience in financial process improvement
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Excellent leadership and management skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Strong organisational skills with attention to detail
