About Vocal Advocacy

Vocal is a small independent advocacy organisation operating in South and West Devon including Torbay, that helps adults with communication difficulties to understand and exercise their rights, make informed choices and speak up for themselves. Our main activity is one-to-one advocacy, however we also offer services including training, person centred planning and independent quality monitoring or care packages.

We have a reputation locally for the high quality of its services. We hold the national advocacy quality mark.  We may be small, but we are effective, enthusiastic and innovative. 

What will you be doing?

We are all dedicated to ensuring that the aims of the organisation are achieved and that people's rights are upheld. One of the trustees has been on the management committee, in various roles, since the organisation was founded 29 years ago. Their hard work was recognised when DeVA selected them for ‘trustee of the year winners’ at the Devon Community Foundation volunteer of the year awards ceremony. Our Board needs to encompass a wider range of skills, especially around strategic planning and marketing in order to drive the success of our development project. If you are interested in becoming a trustee of Vocal, we would love to hear from you!

What are we looking for?

We are looking for passionate people to join our Board. You don't need to have a background in health and social care or in supporting people who have a learning disability, but you must share our passion for ensuring people's rights!

We particularly wish to broaden our skill base of the Board to support our Chief Officer through the development of the organisation.

Key areas are skills in income generation, strategic and business planning, marketing and communications. We would welcome a Trustee with finance/ accountancy background to take on the Treasurer role in due course.

In terms of planning for the future, our Chair would like to have a succession plan in place, should she decide to step down in a few years time, and it would be good to recruit trustees who might be interested in and be suitable future leaders for the charity.

What difference will you make?

As part of our Board, you will support and shape our work and strategic direction, as well as help us achieve our purpose to ensure wide ranging and easily accessible advocacy is available to people with a learning disability in South Devon and Torbay. As a Trustee, you will have a real opportunity to offer your unique skill set to help the strategic progression of the charity.

You will become part of a warm friendly and inclusive organisation where staff trustees and our ‘experts by experience’ (people who’ve used our services) work supportively and enthusiastically together to a common end. Everyone contributes in their own way, and is valued for what they bring. Vocal is a great network to belong to, and our in person or virtual meetings involving all the different groups are stimulating but also fun!

Commitment:

The program calls for a college diploma or university degree and a minimum commitment of

four months, although we encourage volunteers to stay for up to one year. All volunteers enjoy

one day off per week and a four-day holiday per month.

The University of Nottingham Students’ Union (UoNSU) is looking for skilled HR and financial leaders to join their board as they provide excellent support, representation and services for over 38,000 students whilst embarking on a new period of strategic delivery.

Prospect Burma (PB) is a charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, CIO number 1167686. For 35 years, it has worked to widen access to international higher education for Myanmar’s youth, supporting pathways to international study and funding scholarships for those marginalised by ethnicity, gender, socio-economic situation, conflict or displacement. PB has supported over 1,500 students on its scholarship programme and hundreds more through targeted post-secondary programmes in ethnic states and on Myanmar’s borders. In 2023, PB launched Myanmar’s first online scholarship opportunity, and continues to respond in an agile way as the current crisis evolves.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated Governance Volunteer to oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of our governance policies and procedures, manage organisational data effectively, and conduct compliance audits. The ideal candidate will have a background in governance, data management, or compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

Policy and Procedure Management

• Develop, review, and update governance policies and procedures to ensure alignment with organisational goals and regulatory requirements.
• Monitor adherence to established policies and procedures across the organisation.

Data Management

• Ensure data integrity, confidentiality, and compliance with data protection regulations.

Compliance Audits

• Conduct regular compliance audits to assess adherence to regulatory requirements, internal policies, and best practices.
• Prepare audit reports outlining findings, recommendations, and corrective actions.

Stakeholder Engagement

• Foster positive relationships with board members, volunteers, staff, and external stakeholders in governance and compliance.
• Facilitate board orientation and ongoing training sessions for board members in governance and compliance.
• Recommend training for UK and local team members where required.

Risk Management

• Identify potential governance risks.

Experience:

• Previous experience in governance, data management, compliance, or a similar role.
• Strong understanding of governance principles, regulatory compliance, and data management best practices.
• Excellent analytical, organisational, and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and data management software.

Main Responsibilities of the Treasurer

In relation to the Committee

• Assist the Chair and management committee to formulate strategic plans and regular review of long-term strategic aims of the organisation.
• Inform organisational financial polies
• To present financial reports to the board, including the organisation’s end of year accounts.
• Advice on the financial implications of the organisation’s operational plans and strategies
• Advise on the organisational fundraising strategy
• Ensure that there is no conflict between investment and CIHA’s mission and values.

In relation to the CEO

• Assist the Chair to appoint the CEO and contribute to the process of appraising and constructively guiding the performance of the CEO.
• Assume guardianship of the legal and financial integrity of the organisation.
• Advise the Chair and CEO on matters of financial strategy.
• Oversee the CEO’s activities in the context of financial responsibility
• Together with the Chair maintain careful oversight of any risk to reputation and/or financial standing of the organisation.
• Receive regular informal progress reports of the organisation’s financial performance through the CEO and Chair.

Board Member

As a member of the Board, you will be responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the organisation, developing its aims, objectives and goals in accordance with company guidelines, legal and regulatory guidelines, you will help to protect the wealth and assets of the organisation.

Responsibilities:

Ensuring that the organisation complies with internal policy and legislation.

Making sure that the organisation pursues defined goals in line with its stated objectives.

Monitoring the financial position and ensuring that the organisation operates within its means and that there are clear lines of accountability for financial management

Ensuring that the resources of the organisation are used only to pursue legitimate objectives. Contributing to the Board's role of providing strategic direction and supporting the development of policies, goals and targets.

Maintaining the good name of the organisation. Ensuring the financial stability of the organisation. Participating in working groups as necessary.

Attending seminars and networking events when required.

Leading discussions and providing guidance on new initiatives, particularly in areas where the member has specific skills, knowledge or expertise.

Maintaining confidentiality about any sensitive or confidential information Regularly attending and taking a full part in meetings.

Skills and qualifications:

Commitment to the goals and aims of the organisation.

Dedication to the role and a willingness to devote the required time. Understanding the importance of carrying out required legal duties. Proven strategic abilities that can be used to create effective plans.

Strength of character coupled with the ability to voice concerns and opinions. Proven experience working as a member of successful teams.

We are particularly interested in applicants who have professional backgrounds in Performance and Insight, LGBT Housing and Governance but welcome applications from anyone with the passion and commitment to our cause.

Meetings are held either in a Central London venue or over Microsoft teams, on weekday evenings once a quarter.

About the Foundation

The AAGBI Foundation (the Foundation) is the registered charity of the Association and a company limited by guarantee. The two legal entities are separate but operate under one brand identity as the Association of Anaesthetists. (The Association is currently implementing the recommendations of a recent governance review which will simplify the current legal set up).

The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the charity. The Board oversees strategy, annual business plans, and budgets, working with the Chief Executive Officer and senior management team, who are responsible for operational delivery. The Board of Trustees is advised on charitable governance by the Chief Executive Officer and by specialist professional advisors when required.

About the lay trustee role

Following the successful implementation of our strategy to engage lay trustees with our Board and committees, the Foundation is now seeking to appoint two new lay members to its Board of Trustees.

We are seeking two lay trustees to enhance the breadth of knowledge and expertise on our Board. We are actively seeking individuals with expertise in areas such as:

• business and finance
• charity law and governance
• company law and regulation
• cyber security and risks, data structure and management
• IT and digital transformation
• fundraising
• organisational development and HR

As lay trustee members they would also join the Board of Directors of the Association as a non-voting member, and be a co-opted member of the Council, which acts as an advisory group to the board.

The deadline for applications is 17:00 on Friday 19 July 2024. Expressions of interest are invited via a letter and CV to the Chief Executive Officer, Nicky de Beer. Your application should address the role description and person specification. 

Following an initial short-listing process interviews will be held in London on Friday 2 August 2024.

As a Branch Secretary, you would be in an essential volunteer role as the principal communications trustee managing and maintaining the administrative affairs of our branch. Using your expertise and skills, you will be able to influence how we care for and prevent cruelty to animals and drive the implementation of key initiatives. We rescue and rehome around 200 animals each year and provide community help and support with animal welfare in all DA postcodes plus BR8 postcodes.

As a minimum, trustees would normally be expected to attend a monthly committee meeting lasting some 2 to 3 hours. However, the commitment may vary depending on whether or not the trustee takes on additional duties.

Primary responsibilities of the Branch Secretary:

• To act as the primary contact point for all branch communications with the national Society, the branch committee and the branch membership.
• Arrange branch meetings, ensure accurate minutes are taken and distributed in accordance with branch rules.
• Ensure all branch committee decisions are implemented and actions completed.
• Arrange the branch AGM including the compilation and distribution of the annual report, nominations and agenda in line with the strict timetable laid down in the branch rules.
• Arrange the timely dissemination of the contents of all correspondence and literature received by the branch, ensuring availability to all committee members, and reply to all branch correspondence where necessary.
• Order and distribute RSPCA stationery, leaflets, posters and other fundraising and promotional material.
• Liaise with the Branch support specialist (BSS) and group chief inspector and notify them of all branch meetings.
• Advise the BSS of all changes to branch facilities, services and contact details.
• In the absence of the membership secretary, assume responsibility for the maintenance of the branch membership list.
• Submit recommendations for national Society awards to the BSS, in accordance with the wishes of the committee.

What we are looking for in a volunteer:

• Above all, we are looking for someone who is committed to the RSPCA’s charitable objectives and shares our passion for animal welfare.
• Specific skills such as finance, fundraising, project management, business experience, awareness of employment and/or charity legislation can be useful, but not essential.
• You will need to be able to work with people and have good interpersonal skills. You do not need to be an expert, although commitment, common sense, and the ability to be objective are vital.
• Be able to commit to 4 hours weekly.

The Role of Non-Executive Director

ASV are on the search for two Non-Executive Directors to join their Board to ensure continuity and stability in governance. These positions have become available due to existing members stepping down after completing their full terms.

As a Non-Executive Director, you will work with other Board Members to govern and provide stability to the affairs of Aberdeen Sports Village and ensure that it is led in accordance with its values and beliefs.

Role responsibilities include:

· Collaborate with fellow Board Members and staff to manage and control the Company effectively.

· Ensure accountability to stakeholders and compliance with legal and funding requirements.

· Act as a guardian of ASV’s strategy and values.

· Provide strategic direction, approve policies, goals, and targets, and evaluate performance.

· Safeguard the organisation’s reputation and ensure efficient administration and financial stability.

· Oversee the appointment and performance of the Chief Executive and senior management team.

· Promote equality, diversity, and the organisation’s commitment to the community.

We are particularly interested in individuals with backgrounds in Legal, IT/digital marketing and media, Finance, and Project management skills.
