The Finance Manager will join a small and dynamic team that covers Finance, Human Resources, IT and Business Operations. The Finance & Operations team play a critical role by running the day-to-day operations and providing the infrastructure that enables the continued delivery of the Trust’s mission and objectives.

The Sutton Trust is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Finance Manager to join the team and provide crucial support on a range of key finance functions. This a varied and hands-on role that requires a strong understanding of charity accounting (particularly funds), excellent problem-solving skills and initiative. You can expect a steep learning curve and fast-paced work in a passionate and supportive environment

Main duties

• Cash management and cashflow forecasting; monitoring and reporting on the Trust’s investment portfolios
• Approval of payment runs in line with approval matrix
• Supporting the Director of Finance & Operations with annual budget setting and leading on quarterly reforecasting cycles
• Building and maintaining relationships with budget holders and members of senior leadership to help them understand budgets and financial statements and support them with their day-to-day budget management and finance needs
• Preparing quarterly management accounts, and other financial modelling as required
• Supporting the Development Team with funding applications, and grant / funder reporting
• Ensuring compliance with funder restrictions and requirements
• Preparing VAT returns, submitting returns to HMRC and providing VAT advice, as required
• Overseeing the Finance Officer’s work and providing cover for leave including sales and purchase ledger, month end, payroll, pension and staff benefit administration as well as the administration of Gift Aid and legacy income.
• Preparing annual accounts and year-end schedules, working closely with the Director of Finance & Operations and external auditors
• Supporting the Director of Finance & Operations to ensure there is an effective system of financial controls
• Line managing, motivating and proactively supporting the Finance Officer in their professional development
• Proactively updating your own knowledge in relation to the role, identifying and undertaking appropriate training
• Keeping up to date with legislation, policies and procedures relevant to the role and the Trust’s work
• Other duties as necessary from time to time

Skills and Experience

We welcome applications from individuals who have experience in:

• A hands-on, generalist finance role with strong experience of a wide variety of finance processes
• Producing monthly or quarterly management accounts and providing suitable narrative as required
• Supporting or leading on aspects of the year-end processes and/ or the annual audit, including producing year-end schedules, accounts and liaising with the auditors
• Setting up and maintaining forecasting templates, including for cashflow purposes
• Improving financial controls and processes, and using technology or automation to improve efficiencies
• Working with and supporting non-finance staff with their day-to-day budget management including the provision of training
• Managing and supporting junior finance staff
• Working in the education or not-for-profit sector (desirable)
• Working with Quickbooks or a similar accounting software (desirable)

• Strong verbal and written communication skills at all levels

Terms of Appointment

• Office location: The Sutton Trust, 9th Floor, Millbank Tower, 21-24 Millbank, London, SW1P 4QP. Our home working policy gives staff the option to work from home for up to 60% of the time, with approval from their line manager.

A small, well-established London-based not for profit membership body is seeking a Finance Manager for a full-time permanent role. The salary is £47,867 - £50,813 per annum, with the organisation usually looking to appoint at the entry level point on the salary scale.

Reporting to a Finance Director and managing a Finance Officer, the role is largely a business-as-usual finance role covering management accounts preparation, managing budgets with department heads, bank reconciliations & transactional finance and leading on all aspects of accounting for 2 very small related charitable entities.

Candidate requirements:

• Graduate level education and at least a part-qualified accountant (ACA, ACMA or ACCA)
• Sound knowledge of management accounting and budgeting principles and methodology
• Ability to and experience of independently preparing draft accounts to management accounts level
• The ability to present Management Information in a visual and easy to understand way to a variety of stakeholders
• Experience of Sage accounts package, including the interface with Excel, and of CRM systems (desirable not essential)

This is a newly created Finance Manager role where you will be responsible for the daily operations of the charity to ensure that all aspects of the finance function operate successfully. You will support both internal and external stakeholders with finance-related matters and will have direct exposure to working with the board.

Key Responsibilities:

• Preparation of accurate and timely monthly management accounts
• Cash monitoring and reporting
• Prepare/assist with the preparation of financial statement and supporting schedules
• Preparation of quarterly sales invoices
• Oversight of bill payments
• Process and post-nominal ledger month-end journals
• Provide finance support to the wider team
• Provide finance support to the facilities manager in all aspects of managing the office building
• Managing the service charge account for the office building
• Running the monthly payroll including liaising with payroll providers
• Preparation of VAT returns
• Assisting with the preparation of the finance update for the quarterly board meeting
• Act as a point of contact with banks, service providers, and suppliers
• When required liaise with the external auditors, ensuring that timescales are communicated and agreed, and the auditors’ requirements are met to ensure timely completion of their work

Skill set required

• Qualified Accountant CA/ACA/ACCA/CIMA or qualified by experience
• Strong management accounting and bookkeeping experience
• Experience working in a similar role, ideally within a small company environment
• Self-starter who works proactively and independently
• Good organisational skills and ability to plan and prioritise work
• IT literate with strong Excel skills
• Experience using accounting software, QuickBooks advantageous
• Interest in or experience of working in the charity sector

This is a part-time role of 30 hours per week with flexibility to work these hours across either 4 days or 5 shorter days.  The office is located in Goodge Street, London and there will be the expectation to be in the office approximately 22 days per week.

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Senior Finance Manager with a cancer awareness charity, on a full-time, permanent basis. As Senior Finance Manager you will have responsibility for overseeing the charity’s finances. You will play a key role in providing support and analysis to help decision-making for the Leadership team.

Please note, there is hybrid working in place with this organisation and you will be required to go into the office 2 days per week.

As Senior Finance Manager, you will:

- Manage the day to day running of the finance function

- Be responsible for the preparation of budget holder monthly reports and other internal financial reports

- Line manage the Finance Assistant

- Support on the annual Budgeting and quarterly Forecasting process

The successful applicant will:

- Have demonstrable experience in finance within the charity sector, in a similar role

- Be part-qualified or fully qualified

- Have knowledge of the Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP)

- Have proven experience in budgeting, financial analysis and supporting year end reporting

- Have demonstrable experience of managing and mentoring a finance team

- Have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
