Working in the Peterborough Locality the postholders will support children, young people and their families through identifying their needs and helping them to achieve the Best Start in Life.

In addition to monitoring children's activity and development you will assist families to implement behaviour management strategies through evidence-based parenting programmes and ensure a safe environment to promote families and children's physical and mental health and to support their emotional well-being. You will also need to assess, record and report on the on-going progress of those you work with

With a relevant NVQ3 level qualification (or equivalent experience) you should have previous experience of working with children and young people. Knowledge of parenting programmes including Webster Stratton Incredible years would be advantageous together with experience of one-to-one support with vulnerable families.

Knowledge of safeguarding and the issues facing vulnerable children and families are essential, together with experience of group delivery and first-rate communication and team working skills.

The Norfolk and Waveney Autism /ADHD Support Service are delighted to be hiring a Family Support Worker to join our supportive and successful team.  Our service is commissioned by Norfolk and Waveney ICB to provide support and advice, resources and signposting to parents/carers of children or young people awaiting assessment for Autism or ADHD.

Your impact – For families awaiting assessment for Autism / ADHD in the area, to offer individual or virtual (via zoom or teams) telephone support to include giving information, advice and guidance, signposting, referring to other agencies as appropriate, attending relevant family support meetings.  This may also include occasional home visits.

Facilitating support groups for families awaiting assessment for ASD/ADHD in the area. Co-production of parent-led groups and parent forums, co-facilitating courses for parents/carers such as the 3 week Plan Bee course.

Working with the co-ordinator to develop relationships with schools, pre-schools, children’s health services and children’s social services and, in particular, NCHC Neurodevelopmental Teams to provide co-ordinated support to families.

Your skills - To join us as Family Support Worker you will have experience of working or volunteering with families in the community.  A relevant qualification in child and family work is desirable.  You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and experience in using IT to deliver support, record casework, write reports and input data.

You’ll be an effective communicator who excels at building trusting and empowering relationships with individuals. You will be compassionate and empathic, with a good understanding of child development and in particular of Autism and ADHD and the impact this can have on children and their families.  Experience of delivering evidence-based programmes for parents and/or of facilitating group work.  Committed and willing to promote inclusion and equality of opportunity for all.

We have an exciting opportunity here at Barnardo's for experienced, enthusiastic and assertive Family Support Workers to join a brand-new team who will deliver the In Reach Hospital Emergency Department Family Support Programme.

The role is full time , 37 hours per week, permanent fixed term funded until March 2025 and will be based at the North Middlesex University Hospital, The entrance to the A&E department is in Bridport Road, Edmonton, London, N18 1QX.

Starting Salary Range - £28,565 - £30,607

Successful candidates will work in partnership with the clinical team to facilitate discharge of children aged 0-12 years from the Emergency Department where the clinical presentation is not acute and can be managed at home by local services.  

“This role requires workers to have experience of holistic ways of working with families and young people. Including assessment, support, signposting and making referrals to appropriate services where needed. The successful applicant will be able to work as part of a team as well as on their own initiative and manage the pressures of working in both a busy emergency department and the community”

Some but not all of the key responsibilities are:

• Initial face-to face conversation or triage call to identify presenting issues and the level of intervention required.
• Delivering support flexibly and tailored to the needs of the family unit including telephone, virtual and face-to-face support and home visits where necessary. Contact with families could be a one-off or over weekly sessions based on level of need targeted. 
• Signposting to partner agencies, based on needs identified.
• Supporting families to navigate their way through referral pathways and enable them to access universal & targeted services.
• Where required advocating on behalf of families, supporting parents and carers to communicate with professional/Services.
• Supporting families to access other local services.

Ideal Candidates must have's

• Experience of working with families with complex needs and the ability to build and maintain rapport through effective communication and listening skills, using a whole family approach.
• Ability to be clear and realistic about what support the service and you can offer to families.
• Ability to maintain a visible presence and sustain relationships with clinical staff, being mindful of the various working patterns/ professionals within the department.  
• Ability to navigate a high pressure, fast paced acute healthcare setting. 
• Competent IT skills to record and maintain accurate data. 
• A basic understanding of Public Health, health inequalities and wider determinants that underpin health and wellbeing. 
• Knowledge of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
• Relevant Level 3 Qualification (Health and/or Social Care)

More about the Programme

The In Reach Hospital Emergency Department Family Support Programme model offers a robust way of supporting often vulnerable families to uncover and address unmet need. Through identifying the underlying factors causing the clinical presentation and attendance, and addressing holistic needs of the family unit, we hope activity to unscheduled, primary and emergency care is dramatically and sustainably reduced.

The model is based on Family Support Workers based within Children's Emergency Departments, offering holistic, family-oriented support in a flexible manner either in-person, telephone- based and home visits to be able to address the underlying causes of repeated / avoidable ED attendances.

*Although this contract has a permanent status, please be aware that this post is subject to funding currently to March 2025 and therefore should this funding not be extended further, you may be subject to a redundancy consultation or a TUPE arrangement.

** Please note the hours for this role will be required over a 5-day week and may be done in longer day shifts or with set times i.e. 8am to 4pm (to suit Emergency Department and community/family needs). The role can adopt flexible working arrangements to meet service and personal need but will NOT provide 24 hour provision in the ED settings. This can be discussed further at interview.

Job Title: Family Finding Worker

Role Purpose

Provide strategic leadership for KLS’ Refugee Family Programme, ensuring that programme direction and delivery is strategically aligned, responds to learning and changes in context, and maximises our impact in the community.

Key Responsibilities 

• Providing clear and steady leadership and management to all aspects of our newly formed Refugee Family programme, which has grown out of previous separate projects to better meet the holistic needs of people we support.
• Managing and developing the budget and finances; whilst supporting the fundraising lead to secure its financial viability.
• Directly lead the scoping and planning of the Refugee Family Programme Strategy to:
  • Develop and expand existing programmes.

  • Build and maintain effective networks and partnerships that will ultimately support people to realise their potential.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Administration

• Recruit, train, manage and support the team, holding regular supervision sessions, annual appraisals and appropriate training and development.

• Ensure all member and project records are kept up to date on Salesforce.

Safeguarding

• Responsible for embedding safeguarding best practice and ensuring adherence to policies and procedures across the programme team, ensuring that safeguarding is at the forefront of KLS’ delivery.
• Act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead for the Refugee Family Programme Team, working with Safeguarding Officers and Duty Leads to ensure all safeguarding concerns are managed and recorded appropriately and safeguarding cover is maintained across the team in line with KLS’ procedures.

Skills and Experience

• Extensive leadership and management experience, coupled with a track record of leading the strategic development of services for adults and children (of all ages) from the refugee community that improve their access to education and justice, reduce their isolation and improve their ability to navigate their journey.
• Extensive experience of working with people from vulnerable groups, especially children and young people, ensuring that clients’ needs are at the forefront of service planning and delivery.
• Experience of working with refugee communities.
• Up to date knowledge of the English education system, rights to education, the barriers facing refugee communities in accessing education and how these might be addressed.
