We have worked in Birmingham for five years and the need and urgency for our work is greater than ever, with the many live grassroots campaigns across Birmingham mobilising people to come together to save libraries, youth services and social housing. We know that a shared root cause of all of these crises is the city’s economic system. 

This role leads our work across Birmingham to help build our collective capacity to analyse, strategise and take action for economic system change in the city. It will coordinate our Programme team to deliver different initiatives that support a growing movement for economic justice across the city - particularly focused on building support and engagement amongst grassroots changemakers and communities experiencing economic injustice. It will manage projects and resources, conduct programme development and delivery, oversee outreach and partnerships, changemaker recruitment and contribute to fundraising - ultimately play a key role in shaping our regional impact. This position is crucial in coordinating our work across Birmingham and driving meaningful collaboration with local and national stakeholders, in particular working collaboratively with Economic Justice Brum, a long term initiative working on local economic systems change.

Birmingham Programme Development

• Working closely with the Programme Director and the Programme Team, lead the translation of People’s Economy’s strategy into a programme of work in Birmingham
• Working closely with the Programme Director and the Programme Team, identify the resources People’s Economy needs to deliver its strategy in Birmingham and contribute to fundraising for the organisation’s programme of work in Birmingham
• Working closely with Programme Director lead outreach and relationship building with community and civil society partners, including members of the Economic Justice Brum
• Working closely with the Head of Community, lead the development of People’s Economy’s programme of outreach and relationship building with changemakers in Birmingham including current grassroots campaigns such as Save Birmingham, Save Birmingham Youth Service (SBYS), Ladywood Unite, Save Druids Heath and the Birmingham Fair Housing Campaign.

Birmingham Programme Delivery

As a member of our senior leadership team, reporting to our chief executive, you will manage, lead and develop our support and development team, with nine passionate and knowledgeable staff.

Your job is to ensure the team excels and thrives in its work supporting and developing our membership to increase its impact, in line with our strategic goals and members’ locally-determined plans and ambitions. Main responsibilities:

1. Manage, lead, support and develop our support and development (S&D) team, ensuring effective delivery and performance against our aims, objectives and plans, and ensuring the team’s work is well-planned, coordinated, evidenced and reported;
2. Lead on the development, delivery and regular review of a strategy and annual plans, targets and budgets for the S&D team, engaging the team and our funders effectively in this process, drawing on member, partner and Board input, and aligning with our overarching strategy;
3. Nurture a member-orientated, empowering, positive approach in the S&D team, in line with our values, ensuring high-quality provision of support, advice and signposting, balancing proactiveness and responsiveness, and being attentive to members’ needs and input, as well as wider contexts and opportunities;
4. Help our team to show positive leadership and provide intelligent, effective support, training and development services to our members around community engagement and empowerment, social inclusion and diversity, sustainable and healthy travel and socio-economic development – including by listening to members, continually developing the team’s knowledge, skills and networks, and enabling the team to signpost, refer to and collaborate with organisations with useful expertise/services;

Continually monitor and develop the S&D team’s performance and impact, including using member, partner and colleague feedback, supporting staff to consider and maximise effectiveness, driving innovation and efficiencies, and developing ways to assess and evidence our impact, especially as our membership continues to grow;
7. Manage our activity supporting the creation and development of new or emerging community rail partnerships, station groups and community stations, and our support for those undergoing major change or challenges, ensuring this is carefully balanced with existing members’ needs;
8. Ensure our members’ voices, experiences and insights can be effectively used by our other teams and external partners, in their delivery, planning and strategic influencing work, especially ensuring that case studies, stories, examples and views are fed through to our communications, policy and events activity;
9. Play a key role in our liaison with and reporting to our own funders, and other major funders of our members, including ensuring effective monitoring and evaluation of our S&D work, collating good evidence of our own and our members’ impact, and maintaining a robust awareness of and ability to advocate on opportunities and risks in community rail;
10. As a member of our senior leadership team, work closely with senior colleagues and across the organisation, and liaise with our Board as relevant, to co-ordinate and manage the delivery of our overarching strategy, reinforce our values, ensure the whole team is engaged with our mission and purpose, and to show external leadership across our members, partners and beyond.

Skills and competencies:

1. Strong leadership and management skills, including a track record in managing, developing, drawing on and getting the best from a multi-faceted team, and working in and driving positive change in a complex, rapidly-evolving environment;
2. Significant experience and demonstrable experience in community engagement and community-led projects, ideally from both professional and voluntary positions, and ideally experience in supporting and advising community initiatives;
3. Experience in successfully planning, developing, delivering and evaluating programmes with positive social outcomes, including reporting to funders;
4. Experience working collaboratively and forming mutually-beneficial partnerships and professional networks, ideally with experience of developing corporate partnerships and/or funder relationships;
5. An understanding of how to evidence and increase social impact, particularly in relation to community development, empowerment and sustainability;
6. Awareness of and a strong commitment to community empowerment, social inclusion, social justice and sustainable development, with a good grasp of the importance of public transport and sustainable travel, and community-led action, to these agendas;

Other information

As you will be home-based and managing a dispersed team, we are flexible about your location. However, you will be expected to travel to our office in Huddersfield for in-person full-team meetings quarterly, and you will need to bring your team together at a central location with similar regularity in between. On top of this, attendance at occasional in-person events and partner meetings, and visits to members to learn more about community rail and assist the team, will be important. We therefore welcome applications from those with decent public transport links, not too far from a railway station to enable journeys to be made sustainably.

This is a full-time position, 37 hours per week. We use a flexi-time system, with the core hours 10am-3pm, and we are committed to being a flexible, supportive and understanding employer. This is a permanent position with a probationary period of six months.

The Movement Collaboration Lead or Senior Movement Collaboration Lead (depending on experience) will work closely with the Programme Director and the Programme Team to lead the development and delivery of an exciting emerging programme of work building collaboration for economic system change between grassroots groups and new economy organisations. 

We are looking for people who are: passionate about addressing economic injustice, are excited about the role of collaboration in creating systems change and capable of creating partnerships and strong relationships with diverse stakeholders.

The first twelve months of this programme will take an action inquiry approach to facilitate a mixed group of new economy organisations and grassroots groups through a collaborative process that will develop shared knowledge and practice about  how we  can effectively and equitably collaborate on economic systems change work through practical experiments, facilitated dialogue and collaborative research.

The role will involve responsibilities for project managing and delivering this work including programme development and delivery, developing partnerships, changemaker recruitment and support, conducting desk research and interviews, managing and running events, supporting project related fundraising, conducting project learning and evaluation and writing a learning report about the project. 

Following this first year we plan to scale work on supporting collaboration between grassroots groups and new economy organisations, subject to funding we hope this could become a permanent role.

All programme roles in the People’s Economy team support work across the programme team and we see a postholder likely working on the Action Inquiry for 0.4 FTE and supporting other work strands depending on their relevant skills, experiences and interests for 0.2 FTE.

People & Culture

• Lead the review and development of HR policies and processes to ensure that they embody People’s Economy’s values, and support effective working and staff wellbeing, drawing in external expertise as necessary.

• Lead the development and implementation of recruitment processes for staff vacancies, ensuring compliance with People’s Economy’s recruitment policy and employment law.

• Lead the implementation of formal HR processes e.g. disciplinary processes, contract variations, and act as the key point of contact with People’s Economy’s external HR advisers. 

• Contribute to the development of organisational culture and values and ensure that they are embedded, promoted and enacted throughout the organisation.

• Lead review and development of People’s Economy’s safeguarding policy, processes and practice including staff and trustee training.

• Lead the work to build and maintain staff health and safety and wellbeing, through developing appropriate systems, processes and practices.

• Undertake day-to-day HR administration, including leave booking and sickness absence recording. 

Operations

• Develop policies, systems and processes to support the effective functioning of the organisation and (with support from the Programme Director) which support the implementation of programme and project delivery.

• Develop and maintain People’s Economy’s IT systems, including working with external providers to review IT security. 

• Lead on regularly reviewing and updating People’s Economy’s remote and hybrid working policies and supporting colleagues to access suitable equipment and workspace to carry out their roles.

• Support the Programme Director set up and manage the operation of People’s Economy’s monitoring, evaluation and learning systems and their embedding across the organisation.

• Support the Executive Director to implement People’s Economy’s Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Oppression (DIAO) policy and lead the annual process of reviewing and updating the policy, and relevant organisational systems and processes to support the implementation of the policy. 

Finance

• Lead People’s Economy’s financial management and control, including:

  • Manage People’s Economy’s book-keeping and payroll providers to ensure that high quality records of income and expenditure are maintained and the smooth operation of supplier payments, invoicing, payroll and pensions contributions.

  • Oversee the timely production of regular financial reporting including management accounts, cash forecasting and quarterly reporting to the Board. Scrutinise regular finance reports and work to resolve any issues identified. 

  • Liaise with People’s Economy’s accountant and manage the annual process of independent examination and producing year-end reports and accounts.

• Lead on financial planning, including the preparation of an annual organisational budget and lead on updating budget information throughout the year.

• Create systems and processes to support staff to develop and manage budgets for the programmes and projects that they are leading.

• With support from the Executive Director, lead the development of organisational business plans and monitoring of progress against them, including reporting on progress to the Trustee Board.

• Lead on maintaining robust and up-to-date information about the organisation’s income pipeline. 

• Lead on fundraising administration:

  • Track progress against income targets ensuring information is kept up to date and regularly updating the Executive Director on the position.

  • Manage funder reporting and invoicing, working closely with colleagues leading funder relationships and with People’s Economy’s book-keeping provider.

Governance and Legal

• Lead on compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements including data protection, employment law, health and safety, and charity law.

• Ensure that People’s Economy has appropriate insurance in place.

• Lead on Trustee Board administration and support the good functioning of the Board, including by managing trustee recruitment processes when required.

• Lead on maintaining the organisational risk register and reporting on it to the Trustee Board. 

• Work with the Executive Director to ensure that there are effective mechanisms to ensure the robustness of external and internal controls (financial and non-financial).

Line Management

• Oversee People’s Economy’s book-keeping providers, and line manage possible future roles, supporting post-holders to carry out their roles effectively and to develop professionally.

About the Role

Reporting to the Deputy CEO this is an exciting role supporting one of the UK’s leading social investors.

We are looking for a self-motivated individual to lead our Programmes Team whilst our current Director of Programmes is on maternity leave. The role will be fixed term from December 2024 until January 2026, although there may be further opportunities beyond the length of the contract depending on organisational growth.

The Director of Programmes will be a key member of CoachBright’s Senior Management Team, and will have input on both operational and strategic decision making. Whilst we will expect your input on matters relating to programme delivery and impact, all members of SMT are expected to contribute to decision making across the organisation. As a result, the role is an excellent opportunity to get genuine leadership experience at an educational charity, with the opportunity to report directly to our board of trustees depending on growth in the role.

The primary responsibility for the Director of Programmes will be to recruit school partners for our EEF trial, with delivery beginning September 2025. This trial is to test the impact our Peer to Peer coaching programme (Y10s coaching Y7s) can have on the maths attainment of disadvantaged pupils. The trial will require us to recruit 100 participating schools, 50 of whom will receive the intervention, with another 50 allocated to a control group.

Working alongside the CEO and the Programmes Team Leader, you will create and execute a strategy to recruit new schools as participants to this trial. As a result, experience of managing sales or partnerships with schools, or existing connections with senior leaders at secondary schools and multi-academy trusts, would be beneficial.

Alongside this, you will line manage our current Programmes Team Leader, who directly line manages our team of Programme Managers. From Sept 2025, we are expecting our Programmes Team to grow, and you will play a key role in recruiting for that expanded team. At that point, we would expect you to begin line managing a small number of Programme Managers directly.

The role is an exciting and challenging opportunity to contribute to the growth of an ambitious charity, develop genuine leadership and strategic experience, and project manage a trial supported by the EEF - one of the most highly regarded and respected educational research organisations. 
 

EEF Trial

• Write and execute the strategy to deliver our EEF trial. This will primarily involve recruiting and onboarding 100 schools to participate from January 2025 through to July 2025, for programmes to begin in September 2025.

Leadership

• Be a key member of the Senior Management Team, working alongside the trustees, CEO, Director of People and Operations, and Director of Finance to drive high quality leadership and decision making.

• Work alongside the CEO to develop and define strategic priorities and targets for programmes.

• Align programmes team around organisational strategy and ensure buy in.

• Help create an organisational culture which is supportive, collaborative and embeds learning & continuous improvement across the programmes team.

People Management

• Line manage our Programmes Team Leader, who will directly line manage all of our Programme Managers. We expect the number of team members you directly manage to increase as our Programmes Team grows.

• Support the Programmes Team Leader with development and delivery of programme KPIs and ensure that Programme Managers are delivering effectively and developing in their roles. 

• Identify skills gaps and development needs for the Programmes Team and work with the Director of People and Operations to develop a training plan for the team to support with programme delivery. 

• Deliver yearly performance appraisals for direct reports.

Programme Delivery

The Role

As Programme Manager you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth delivery of the Tree Aid portfolio – including in francophone West Africa, so being able to speak French is a strong advantage.

Leading People’s Economy’s approach to training

• With support from the Programme Director, lead the development of People’s Economy’s approach to training and workshops to create an approach and set of standards to be applied across the organisation.
• Stay abreast of developments in training best practice across similar organisations and use this knowledge to further develop People’s Economy’s training approach.
• Develop resources (e.g. types of training exercises) that can be used across People’s Economy’s training work

The Charity

The Youth Adventure Trust is a youth development charity working with vulnerable young people aged 11 to 16 years old from Somerset, Wiltshire and Swindon. Our outdoor activity based YAT Adventure Programme enables young people to challenge themselves, experience success, learn to go beyond their own expectations and grow in confidence. Through a series of residential camps and day activities they are able to build resilience, self esteem and develop social and life skills. The YAT Resilience Programme works to the same outcomes through a year long programme of monthly activities, home-based challenges and reflective practice. Our Mentoring Programme works with those young people in need of some additional individualised support at the end of our other programmes. The Trust’s Bursary Programme is open to all those young people who have completed an initial programme, in order to assist their next steps into further activities. Our aim is to make a lasting improvement to the lives of vulnerable young people. All our services are provided completely free of charge to the young people who are nominated by schools and other youth organisations to take part. 

The Role

We are looking for a dynamic, motivated and inspiring individual to oversee and lead our new YAT Resilience Programme. Following a successful pilot in Wiltshire in 2023, we are now launching the programme in Somerset, a new geographical location for the Youth Adventure Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of YAT’s growth, leading our first move outside of Wiltshire and Swindon. There is plenty of scope to develop this new programme, ensuring it meets its objectives and gives the best possible opportunities to the vulnerable young people who are referred to build their resilience and therefore improve their future lives. 

The Resilience Programme Lead will be responsible for;

• developing the content of the Resilience Programme including identifying, arranging and booking activities and other opportunities; and developing complementary materials such as reflective journals, take home challenges, online support and session plans for individual support.

• delivering the Resilience Programme to groups of young people, ensuring the highest standards of safety, wellbeing and engagement, acting as the key point of contact for them and their parents/carers throughout, and ensuring they get the maximum benefit from the opportunity. 

• the continued review and development of the programme content, experience and learning opportunities to ensure maximum outcomes and that programme objectives are fulfilled. You will seek the views and feedback of young people, and include them as well as other stakeholders in its development. Having a high quality programme that meets its aims is of the utmost importance to YAT and this will require a reflective, insightful and creative leader. 

• monitoring the impact of the programme on the young people taking part through use of our outcomes measurement tool and seeking feedback from young people, parents, referral agencies and volunteers. Reporting on this impact through success stories, data and analysis.

What’s the job?

We are searching for a talented commercial operator to join the team as Commercial Development Consultant. The role is fast paced, working with students’ union commercial teams around the UK, with frequent travel and some nights away involved.

A key part of the role is to initiate, grow and maintain engaging relationships with member students’ union commercial teams across retail, licensed hospitality and food service environments to enable them to grow their profitable contribution in a compliant, insight-led way.

The role has responsibility for implementing our inhouse compliance programmes, ensuring improved understanding and awareness to create programme longevity and continued benefits for both members and suppliers.

Our members take part in the Best Bar None accreditation, demonstrating that their licensed spaces are being operated in a safe and responsible manner. The role holder would therefore become a Best Bar None assessor and complete a number of in person assessments during the year.

Who you are

A talented operator who has experience in the commercial world of hospitality (catering and licensed), retail experience would be a bonus, either within a Students’ Union or a high street operator.

You will have held roles where you can demonstrate a vast knowledge of operating commercial outlets whilst controlling costs, managing margins, and delivering great operating standards.

Understanding the market is key as you’ll be helping our member students’ unions to interpret current trends and develop them into successful action within member commercial operations. 

Having a good eye for detail and understanding the need for compliance comes easy to you, along with the skill to challenge where non-compliance may be apparent, so you’ll have strong interpersonal and influencing skills and be a good communicator.

The RSPB, Europe’s leading nature conservation NGO, is seeking a Director of Supporter Fundraising to lead the charity’s work in recruiting and stewarding the next generation of individual supporters to help address the nature and climate emergency.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is a charity for the conservation of birds and nature, bringing people together who love birds and other wildlife, and who want to take action to restore the health and diversity of the natural world. The charity now manages and protects 160,000 hectares of land across the four countries of the UK.

Public support has been at the centre of RSPB’s work since its foundation as a campaigning organisation in 1889. With 1.1 million current members contributing over £95m to the charity’s cause in 2024, the RSPB has set itself a bold ambition to increase supporter numbers and net income from this core area.

Working closely with the Executive Director for Income and Conservation Investment and other senior stakeholders across RSPB, the Director of Supporter Fundraising will ensure that the organisation maintains and increases its income in membership, individual giving, legacies, in memoriam and community fundraising. The role will be responsible for a large team working to develop new strategies and to engage and grow a diverse supporter base, enabling the charity to inspire long-term support and active engagement with their work.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in growing a large and complex individual giving or subscription programme across multiple products and channels. They will also have demonstrable experience of leading successful organisational transformation to create long-term value, as well as of leading projects within a complex stakeholder or matrix management environment. Significant experience in individual supporter fundraising or consumer marketing through direct marketing techniques will be essential.

As a leader, the successful candidate will have strong collaboration skills with the ability to inspire, develop and motivate teams to achieve challenging goals in a variety of contexts. They will also be able to use their networking and interpersonal skills to build excellent internal and external relationships and must be able to thrive in a fast-paced, high-performing environment. Finally, they will have a commitment to the values and vision of RSPB and to mobilising support for a thriving natural world.

About the role

We are seeking a Learning and Development Manager to work with the Director of Partnerships and Federation Development to develop an ambitious learning and development strategy for Emmaus UK.

As a hands-on Learning & Development Manager, you will play a critical role in developing the skills, knowledge, and capabilities of employees, companions, volunteers and trustees across the Emmaus Federation and within Emmaus UK.

Your primary focus will be on developing and delivering effective learning interventions, programs and initiatives that align with the goals of Emmaus and support the growth and development of its people.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a high-performing Learning and Development Manager, with experience working in a learning and development role, including experience of delivering training in-person and online to a range of stakeholders.

The successful applicant will be able to deliver effective and engaging learning and development programmes and will have experience of identifying and analysing learning and development needs, developing relevant approaches and evaluating effectiveness, developing a strong culture of continuous improvement across Emmaus UK and the wider federation.
