Shooting Star Children’s Hospices are a leading children’s hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families. We support families across Surrey and Southwest London from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional and medical care.
At the heart of the hospice are our dedicated clinical staffs. Their exceptional commitment and professionalism is commented on by so many of the supported children and their families.
It costs £10.5 million a year to maintain our current level of care. Only 30% of that income comes from government funding via the NHS or local authorities, so we rely on our supporters’ generosity to keep the service running. We employ 175 staff, including 98 nursing and medical staff, providing hospice and community-based services to around 700 families.
Predominantly we work with families living in the Northwest and Southwest of London and Surrey, although will accept children outside these geographical areas if they do not have access to specialist palliative care support locally. We have a reputation for delivering high quality care. We have a CQC rating of ‘Outstanding’
Introduction
Retail and Volunteers Team: Our Retail and Volunteers Team manages our charity shops and volunteer programs, which play a crucial role in supporting our mission. They recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers to staff our shops and assist with various tasks, such as sorting donations and serving customers. Additionally, they oversee the operations of our retail outlets, ensuring that they are efficiently run to generate income for our hospices.
Part 1: Job Profile
a) Main purpose of job
In the absence of the manager or assistant managers to lead a team of volunteers to maximise sales, deliver excellent customer service and ensure that the shop premises and assets are maintained to a high standard, according to legal requirements and Shooting Star Children’s Hospices (SSCH) policies and procedures.
Decision Making Authority
The post holder will be required to make decisions on the quality, and suitability of donations before they are placed on sale. Depending on the length of the cover period they may be required to dress the windows. (They will follow price guidelines and existing display layout throughout the shop.)
The post holder will work with eCommerce Manager to decide if items would be suitable for selling at a higher price on eBay or through a promotional event and set these aside for the manager of the shop to deal with on their return.
The post holder will support with rostering of the team of volunteers where necessary and delegation of duties and jobs.

b)Scope of job
The post holder for the duration of the absence of the manager or assistant manager will have control over rostering of the team of staff and volunteers, and delegation of duties and jobs.

Part 2: Main duties and key responsibilities
a) Customer Service – 25%
• Dealing with customer queries and complaints courteously and effectively
• Informing the Head of Volunteer Development and Retail of any serious incidents or complaints
• Ensure that any refunds are processed in line with SSCH refunds policy
• Ensure that the advertised trading hours of the shop are adhered to
• Ensure relevant documents are completed in the event of an incident/accident and reported accordingly
b) Processing donations – 25%
• Process all donations as soon as possible, prioritising Gift Aid and high value items
• Prepare and clean items appropriately for display
• Oversee the recycling and arranging of collections
• Promote Gift Aid is at all available opportunities
• Ensure that the ongoing need for donations is publicised
• Price and ticket all items according to pricing strategy for the shop and ensure that all pricing and ticketing complies with legislation
• Ensure that stock is properly managed and rotated in accordance with latest guidance
• Identify high value or specialist items that may need to be sold in another capacity
c) Merchandising, display and promotion of stock, maintenance of high standards throughout the shop – 20%
• Ensure that all merchandise is displayed attractively and that the window display is eye-catching
• Ensure that there are high standards of cleanliness and tidiness in all areas of the shop
• Publicise promotions and special events
• Support and promote Corporate events as required
• Purchase consumables and stock items in a timely manner
d) Sales and financial reporting – 10%
• In the absence of the manager/assistant ensure that daily/weekly financial reports are submitted and that any discrepancies are investigated
• Keep the Head of Volunteer Development and Retail fully informed and updated regarding the performance of the shop and any issues which may impact this
• Ensure that the Manager/Assistant Manager and shop volunteer team are kept informed of the shop’s performance
• Ensure that the till procedures are always followed by volunteers
• Ensure that issues affecting trade are monitored and communicated
• Ensure trading standards regulations are complied with
• Ensure that all financial documentation is correctly completed and up to date and is sent to the finance team in a timely manner, highlighting any issues
• Ensure that purchases from the shop by staff and volunteers are processed according to SSCH policy and that the appropriate records kept
• Ensure that charity donations by cash/cheque/card are processed according to SSCH policy and procedure guide
e) Coordination of volunteer team – 20%
• Ensure that volunteers are fully briefed on shop priorities and performance
• When required roster the volunteer team to ensure maximum productivity

• Plan, delegate and allocate tasks to the team, offering support for the volunteer team as appropriate
f) Other duties
• The post holder will be able and willing to get to and work in a number of shops and be available across seven days per week.

About the Opportunity
Relief International is seeking a qualified and experienced MHPSS consultant to enhance the integration of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) within the organization's health programming by conducting a rapid assessment of current capacities, developing a tailored intervention framework, and creating actionable plans and training resources. This initiative aims to strengthen the organization's ability to deliver effective, culturally appropriate integrated MHPSS services that are aligned with global standards and responsive to the specific needs of the communities served considering the fragile and conflict affected settings in which Relief International operates.
Deliverables
- Conduct a Rapid Assessment: Evaluate the current capacity for Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) programming within the organization and its areas of operation. This includes reviewing existing national plans, policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), tools, and programmatic approaches, as well as assessing staffing levels and capacities related to MHPSS.
- Develop an MHPSS Intervention Framework: Create a tailored MHPSS intervention framework that aligns with global standards and integrates with Relief International’s (RI) Health and Nutrition strategy, particularly within the context of primary healthcare programming. The intervention framework should consider practical approaches that are evidence based and appropriate to the contexts in which Relief International operates
- Create an Implementation Action Plan: Develop an action plan that outlines steps for effective implementation of the MHPSS intervention framework at all organizational levels.
- Design an MHPSS Capacity building Framework: Establish a training and capacity building framework for MHPSS, utilizing existing publicly available tools, resources, and were possible suggesting trainers. The framework should aim to enhance the skills of RI field teams and partners involved in MHPSS initiatives and include supportive supervision. Note that implementation of the training is not within the scope of the consultancy
- Develop an Operational Tool for MHPSS Program Design: Create an operational tool linked to the MHPSS intervention framework, which will guide RI field teams in designing safe, high-quality, and context-responsive MHPSS programs.
We are looking for someone to start the consultancy in November, the level of effort required is 60 days. This can be completed across 3 – 6 months.
About You
You will bring the following experience and skills.
- Educational Background: A master's degree or higher in psychology, social work, public health, or a related field, with a focus on mental health or psychosocial support.
- Professional Experience: substantial experience in MHPSS programming, including work in humanitarian or development contexts. Experience in integrated health programming would be beneficial.
- Technical Expertise: Strong understanding of global MHPSS frameworks and guidelines, such as those developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) including mhGAP. Familiarity with evidence-based practices for mental health interventions is essential.
- Capacity Building Skills: Proven ability to design and facilitate training sessions for diverse audiences, including healthcare professionals, community workers, and beneficiaries.
- Assessment and Evaluation: Experience conducting needs assessments and program evaluations, with the ability to develop practical tools and frameworks for implementation and monitoring.
- Cultural Competence: Ability to work effectively in diverse cultural settings and adapt interventions to local contexts while respecting cultural beliefs and practices.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
- Collaboration and Partnership: Experience working collaboratively with various stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and community organizations, to strengthen MHPSS services.

ABOUT THE ROLE
Role overview
As our Programme and Network Manager you will lead the development and management of our Now Teach Network offer which begins from point of application. You will support Now Teachers to have a successful career change to teaching and drive to impact for students, schools and wider society.
This role is pivotal in delivering against our retention KPIs and our Network and impact plans to ensure we are facilitating and advocating for the added value that career changers can bring to teaching with our partners, senior stakeholders and funders.
The role will be committed to the continuous development of our Network offer and support the implementation of our nascent courses and resources strand. As we develop our work on impact, the Programme and Network Manager will be responsible for creating and delivering opportunities for the Now Teach Network at scale.
In this role you will…
The role will work across the organisation to:
- provide the best possible candidate to cohort experience for incoming Now Teachers
- design and develop discrete career changer content for and with our Partners
- support the attraction of future career changers through inspiring Network case studies and engagement opportunities.
- evolve our insight around the value and role of career change teachers to underpin our impact strategy
- commit to a consistent approach to gathering data.
Provide responsive, personalised support:
- advocate for Now Teachers and create strong, authentic connections with them
- prioritise and direct Now Teachers to appropriate support resources to address immediate needs
- enable Now Teachers to set goals underpinned by values supporting them to leverage their skills and experience from in their classroom and school setting
- build and manage relationships with our training providers and partner schools where our Network is training/teaching
- develop relationships with professional bodies and local influencers to build awareness of Now Teach.
- review Network data termly and develop our approach, accordingly, providing a responsive and attentive offer.
Develop and lead our powerful peer Network:
- maintain in-depth knowledge of the Network’s aspirations and the routes to achieve it
- design, commission and manage projects that deliver change at student, school and system level
- build relationships that encourage the Network to develop their areas of interest and work with Now Teach to innovate these
- pursue opportunities for the Network that respond to interest and needs and identify approaches for sharing of practice
- maintain and develop our online platform Mighty Networks for current and future cohort
- develop Network led activity such as subject hubs, innovation hubs, affinity groups and the buddy offer
- create opportunities for re-engaging Now Teachers
- share Network best practice with the wider community.
Design and deliver courses and resources:
- work with a Network working group to advise on content and approach
- collaborate with a third party to develop and refine courses and resources materials that are engaging, informative, and aligned with the organisation's goals
- stay updated on industry trends and best practices to ensure content remains relevant and up to date
- design and deliver a programme of events online, and in-person including our annual summit
- work with the Director of Programme and Network to develop engagement opportunities for all Network members
- develop, and implement synchronous and asynchronous content.
Commit to Impact and evaluation:
- ensure innovation and a focus on impact, and scale is integrated into our projects
- support the implementation of the impact framework recommendations ensuring uptake by Now Teach Network and integration cross-organisationally
- identify and report on impact Network members are having
- lead the writing and production of project reports, blogs, case studies and other outputs, working closely with the Data and Impact Manager and Communications Lead roles.
Provide robust data and systems:
- understand the importance of robust administrative systems and be committed to ensuring these are kept up to date
- ensure that programme lessons learned are systematically collated and shared with the wider team with recommendations for change as needed
- develop data management, including reports and dashboards, and data visualisation approaches about our activity to support the wider organisation with decision making.

You will have excellent analytical skills with experience of developing research, information or MEL systems in the international development sector.
Working in partnership with peacebuilders in francophone countries means the ability to work in French (proficiency level B2 or above) is a must and as such will be tested in interview. About the Role
As a Programme Officer at Unfold, you’ll ensure that our volunteer mentors feel supported and prepared for their work with young people. Alongside helping to recruit and onboard new mentors, including organising their training and reviewing their progress, you’ll be Volunteer Mentors main point of contact, making sure they have a rewarding and impactful experience. Your work will also include engaging with referrers, parents, and young people themselves, providing guidance and answering questions to ensure everyone feels connected to our mission.

To do that, we need strong relationships in politics and in government at a time where there is an exciting opportunity to shape the conditions for community business to thrive. The External Affairs Officer will provide essential support across the organisation by identifying key stakeholders and determining the most effective tactics to build and maintain relationships in both politics and government. This includes monitoring parliamentary and political developments to spot opportunities, drafting high-quality briefings, articles and press releases, as well as coordinating politically-focused events, such as those held at party conferences.

The West Midlands team are seeking a Fostering Panel Vice Chair to support the Chair in conducting monthly virtual panel meetings held on third Wednesday of the month via Microsoft Teams.
In line with our values, we expect each panel member to ensure that all decisions are made regarding the interest of ‘children in care,’ foster carers, and the community in which they live.
The successful candidate may need to travel to West Midlands area to attend occasional in-person meetings and attend 2 training days per year.
As a Fostering Panel Vice Chair, you will be able to evidence:
- Your understanding of the fostering process and practice within the legislative framework or similar.
- Have at least 2 years’ experience of sitting on a fostering panel.
- A history of employment experience at team manager level or above, ideally in a social work or family placement setting.
- Having substantial experience of chairing meetings.
- An ability to evaluate complex reports and assessments while maintaining clarity within the decision-making parameters.
- The capability to develop, monitor and maintain policies and procedures to the highest standard within TACT
As a Fostering Panel Vice Chair your duties will include:
- Occasionally chairing Panel meetings, in the absence of the Chair, ensuring that multifaceted issues are thoroughly considered and recorded, having undertaken thorough preparation for meetings.
- Co-ordinating and directing the work of the Fostering Panel and ensure the quality of foster carers recruited, meet relevant standards.
- Facilitation of the active participation of all panel members alongside the Chair of Panel.
- Regular liaison with the Chair of Panel, decision-maker and with other senior managers as required.
- Participation in the recruitment, selection, and induction of new panel members.
- To assist the Chair in regular planning of training for and appraisal of panel members and support with Ofsted Inspections as and when required.
A Standard DBS clearance is required for this role. This check will be undertaken by TACT on your behalf. The successful applicant will be engaged on an office holder basis and be required to have professional membership to a social work body if they are currently a practicing social worker or other professional.
